“Man, you have gotta love your job.”

Publisher Derek Smith ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com, (440) 785-7331

I hear it all the time, usually from folks at Bike Nights or Rallies - and I do. However, I’m guessing that the person saying it doesn’t fully appreciate all the job entails.

Sales & Marketing Iron Cowboy Productions, LLC info.ironcowboy@gmail.com, (440)678-8608

I spend all summer running from event to event - from bike nights to rallies, from rides to bike shows. It’s a lot of fun. But it’s still a job, and even with all the running around - we still have to produce a magazine every month.

Layout & Design Meredith Hancock/Hancock Graphics Subscriptions to Thunder Roads Ohio are available for $29.95. Check or Money Order, payable to Iron Cowboy Productions, can be sent to: Iron Cowboy Productions 24381 Aurora Road, B-8 Bedford Heights, OH 44146 Or you can email: Acct.TRO@gmail.com for subscription information and to charge.

It’s tempting to simply hang a sign on the door - “Out Riding” for the summer. We will start the magazine back up in the Fall or once the snow starts flying. Of course, that doesn’t work though. So after a full day in the office, we spend the evening at Bike Night. Often times, I’ll even head back into the office after a Bike Night. After a full “work week”, we often spend the weekend hitting benefit rides and rallies. As I write this, I honestly can’t remember the last true “day off” that I’ve had. I’m not complaining, as I said before, “I love my job”. There are frustrations and challenges, though - and neither the long hours or constant stream of work days top the list. Easily the worst aspect of the job is the inability of actually riding as much as I’d like to. I’m blessed with a garage full of riding options - however, none of them get taken out as much as I’d like to. We publish one of the largest magazines of it’s type in the nation, often weighing in at over a pound a piece in the height of the riding season. We also cover our events with cameras and lights - not crayolas (tm) and colored pencils. When Thunder Roads shows up for an event - we don’t just ride up to shake hands and grab some grub. We bring magazines, we take pictures, and we become part of the party! If you’ve attended any rides or rallies this summer chances are that you know what I’m talking about. When we do an event - we come locked and loaded. Since Thunder Roads Ohio returned almost three years ago, we’ve distributed well over 100,000 magazines at events. These are magazines that we’ve placed directly into the hands of riders at rides, rallies, and bike nights all across the state. It’s one of the reasons that we are who we are - THUNDER ROADS OHIO, the Nation’s Premier Regional Motorcycle Mag. It’s a lot of work, and most of it is NOT done on the back of a bike. At least not for me. Now that I think about it, though, just about everyone else is able ride - but I’m usually the guy showing with the truck! What’s the justice in that? Now that I think about it, maybe we need to revise some job descriptions around here! Just kidding.. As much as I love riding - I can’t imagine showing up at an event without a stack of magazines and a camera to capture some of the priceless moments I witness. That’s my job - and it’s a job I love.

As told by

The Iron Cowboy It’s the People There are some amazing machines out there. From the incredible monster BMW and Triumph adventure bikes to cutting edge Honda and Ducati Super Bikes - It seems as though the limits are redefined almost daily. With the 2014 Harley-Davidson bikes and unveiling of the new Indian models we are faced with a seeming contradiction in terms - cutting edge, classics. Then there are the true classics - the vintage restorations and cafe racers. These are truly rolling masterpieces, often crafted by iron working visionaries practicing other trades by day. It’s these folks that make my job my passion. As amazing as the bikes are - it’s often the riders or builder that is the true story. I was recently at a Bike Night in Dayton, when I was pulled aside by a fellow that wanted to point out a bike parked nearby. It was an “aggressively customized” Softail Deluxe with a bold paint job. It had lots of chrome and a hydraulic suspension that allowed the bike to be lowered to accommodate it’s 5’4” owner. The more I heard though, the more I realized that the rider on the bike was the true story. She was a veteran Ohio State Trooper that had just returned from Sturgis on this very bike. As I took pictures of the bike, I heard a slew of apologies as to the condition of her. “I haven’t cleaned her since we got back from Sturgis..” I then heard more about their ride and her experience with the State motor corps. Many of us may not realize it and some will deny it - but much of the appeal of riding and the motorcycle lifestyle is the people themselves. It’s not just the machines the draw folks out to Bike Nights - it’s the people. As cool as the bikes are at the Rallies and Rodeo’s - it’s the chance to hang out with other bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts that really draws people in. You can take it a step further and argue that when riders start bickering about sport bikes vs cruisers and other such nonsense - it’s really an argument about the lifestyle and approach to riding. In most cases the real distinction isn’t the bikes they are riding but the riders themselves that distinguish these sub groups of riding enthusiasts. One group of machines might be associated with brash, younger riders - another, older more conservative riders. As much as we point to the machines - it’s really an issue of identifying ourselves with a particular group of riders more then anything. 6

South East HOG Chapter Raises $17,000 for the Ghost Rider Foundation One of our favorite people that we’ve come across over the last year is Tim DeWolf, who heads the Ghost Rider Foundation. This is an organization that actively works in our community to help veterans in need. At this year’s Corn Roast, the South East Harley-Davidson Cleveland Chapter of H.O.G. presented Tim with a check for $17,000. They raised this money through a variety of fund raisers worked by their members this past season. “Every day 22 veterans take their own lives,” Tim said as he accepted the check. “These funds will help pay rent, pay for groceries, doctor bills.. and sometimes even court fines. Ghost Rider assists vets and helps them begin recovery through counseling and medication. Sometimes it takes a helping hand to get things turned in the right direction. This will help a lot.” Then Tim promptly turned around and presented a check to Wags 4 Warriors for $6,500 from the Ghost Rider Foundation. He described the relationship of the two organizations, “We work closely with Wags 4 Warriors to provide veterans with PTSD/TBI Service Dogs. The Veterans Administration writes a prescription and typically the dog is a rescue from one of the shelters. The veteran and the dog enter training together in Brecksville Ohio. Once the dog and the vet can perform the tasks required to assist the veteran to live comfortably the dog is signed over to the veteran.” Neither charity charges for the work that they do and they raise money through donations and fund raising efforts in NE Ohio. They then spend the dollars serving veterans in the NE Ohio Area. Thunder Roads Ohio would like to recognize both groups and applaud the South East HOG Chapter for their hard work in supporting them. You can find out more about each of these organizations online. www.ghostriderfoundation.org www.wags4warriors.org

End of the Road Glide? While Harley-Davidson kept most of their 2014 line-up under wraps until their dealer meetings in late August, one major change was leaked early and then confirmed to investors in July - the two Road Glide models would be

care for the “shark nose”, but that’s ok with me. Beyond the unique look, I love the way it handles. Rumor has it that the Road Glide may return with an updated design. Of course, that brings up all the discussion of liquid cooled engines and such. I already have mine, so it really doesn’t impact me in any way - but I hope that the powers that be don’t simply abandon the concept of a frame mounted fairing.

dropped! In a conference call with investors, Senior vice president and CFO John Olin said the decision was part of the company’s typical process of bringing models in and out of the lineup each year as it introduces new bikes. “While those two Road Glide models are strong for us, they represent a relatively small portion of our touring sales,” Olin said in the investor call. “We don’t expect any large impact for taking those two models out for the next model year.” Admittedly, I’m a little biased here - but I am certainly disappointed by this news. I ride a Road Glide and am a huge fan of the design. Aesthetically, it certainly looks different then just about anything else out there - which was certainly part of the appeal when I first got mine. Some don’t

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE september 2013 This article is being written on August 11, 2013. A second interested party meeting for a Road guarding/Certification bill has been scheduled for August 27, 2013. I could not attend the first meeting due to work. I will be attending the second via teleconference. I did get notes from the first meeting. At the first meeting Captain Chad McGinty of the Ohio State Highway Patrol expressed concern that “the motoring public does not react appropriately to uniformed officers and marked vehicles in traffic control situations.” They “fear public safety is being jeopardized by this proposal”. My reaction to this statement is that this proposal is not creating a new activity. We have to get past the mindset that just because an activity is illegal does not mean that it does not exist. Road blocking has been going on as long as I can remember, legal or not. It will continue to go on regardless of the outcome of this proposal. Training people to do it properly can only increase public safety, not jeopardize it. Also at the first meeting John Gilchrist of Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police expressed a concern that the proposal excludes certified

road guards from liability. If this is true it needs to be corrected. My intent was to make people guarding roads eligible for liability coverage, not to exclude them from liability. Blocking traffic is technically obstructing traffic which is illegal. Committing an illegal activity can be considered grounds for some insurance policies to deny benefits. My intent was to find a way to do it legally in order to be financially responsible. We may have to do some rewording of the proposal. I believe Mr. Gilchrist and I are on the same page on this issue. I will report next month on the outcome of the meeting scheduled for 8/27/2013. On a different note, I wanted to take a second to say thank you. I have received a great deal of encouragement and support over the past 2½ years from the members of this organization. Let’s continue to make progress. The steps may be small, but we are headed in the right direction. Regards, Scott “Woody” Wood Government Relations Director ABATE of Ohio, Inc.

SAFETY UPDATE:

Hi Friends, We are still trending better this year in our accident and fatality rates. This means to me we are reaching people with our message. Keep up the good work. Accidents: 1,081 for 2103 vs 3,108 for 2012 Fatalities: 51 for 2013 vs 120 for 2012 An e-mail I received indicated the most fatalities are happening in Franklin and Hamilton counties. Region directors can contact me for more information or I will have more information at the next BOD meeting. I just ordered more yard signs and this tells me that people feel that this is something that works. I hope everyone is pushing signs as an inexpensive way to remind your neighbors to watch for you. I sent out safety material to several people and I am always happy to do so. If you need items to give out at runs and can’t locate any, call me. I have stuff. Today I rode in one of my favorite charity rides benefiting the Shriners. Every year we have a meeting and plan the route. Someone rides the route and looks for safety issues. Shovel and broom in hand, we clean stones off corners, pick up trash, note intersections that might need special attention and try to make the route safer where possible. We keep the parade section short and then send people on their own with a route sheet and check points. Parades are generally more dangerous, even with an escort, if all driving laws are not obeyed. We are still experiencing a lot of annoying rain. But, when we get a good couple of days together, we love riding down to the Ohio river. We actually have ridden the whole length of the Ohio River on the Ohio side and most of the other side. On the Ohio side there are many river towns with plenty to do. We like to find an area just to sit and watch the barges. We also enjoy seeing the river traffic go through the locks. We have mentioned before how much we enjoy the murals on the flood wall in Portsmouth and now we are seeing more towns with amazing murals. Steubenville has quite a few large murals in town. E-mail me if you know where a good mural is located. I would like to do an article this winter on murals in Ohio. I have already been working on the Awareness Rally for next year. I’m making contacts for ways to get more attention. Put May 3, 2014 on your calendar so you can ride with us – you may be on TV! Ride Within Your Limits, Mike 8

Official Harley-Davidson painter David Uhl presenting Chance Encounter to Pope Francis at the Vatican

Likes Harleys

Pope Francis “likes the Harley stuff.”

That’s what official Harley-Davidson painter David Uhl said about the Pontiff after he presented “Chance Encounter,” a piece that commemorated the motor company’s 110th anniversary celebration in Rome. Uhl, whose home base is in Golden, Colo., was selected to do the piece because of the classical nature of his work. The painting depicts a Vatican official curiously inspecting a 1948 Harley-Davidson FL Panhead in front of St. Peter’s Basilica. The piece was used for specialized Vatican postcards commemorating 10

Colorado Artist David Uhl Presents Pope Francis With Painting To Commemorate Harley’s 110th Anniversary Celebration In Rome Harley-Davidson’s anniversary celebration. Uhl flew to Rome on June 10th to present the painting to the pope and to help open a Harley-Davidson gallery that featured about 20 pieces of his artwork. While there, he toured the Vatican’s art collection, and took in the ancient sites of Rome. Uhl said the experience was overwhelming, and that he “felt like the Little Drummer Boy,” when he presented his piece. “This is Sistine Chapel we’re talking about!” Uhl said of the artwork he viewed on his private tour of the Vatican’s art collection. “You can’t believe the amount

of time and effort that was put into that building. You can’t compare me to those artists. I felt like the Little Drummer Boy saying ‘here is my little humble offering.’” In fact, when Uhl presented his artwork to the Pope in front of Willie G. and Nancy Davidson, other members of the Harley-Davidson Corporate family, and several Cardinals, Uhl expressed his humility. “I said, your Holiness … as an artist you might imagine I am overwhelmed by the beauty represented here. I am humbled by the opportunity to present you with this gift. On behalf of the Harley-Davidson motor company and myself I present you with ‘Chance Encounter,’ a piece to commemorate this unique moment in history.” The Vatican loved the painting, Uhl said. The Pope smiled for the entire presentation, and greeted the legendary Harley-Davidson artist warmly. “One thing I did get, I was hanging out with Willie G. and Nancy, and as (the Pope) walked away, he turned back around at the picture and then nodded at everyone,” he said. Uhl estimated that Harley’s 110th anniversary celebration in Rome drew about 40,000 bikers, and also featured a bike blessing from the Pontiff himself. “The event itself was like a European Sturgis,” Uhl said. “It wasn’t nearly as raucous, but there were tons of bikes and people. It looked more like a big HOG convention than anything.” While he was at the Vatican, Uhl said he was struck by how genuine the Catholic hierarchy was. Uhl, who grew up as a Catholic, but who has since spent a great

deal of time researching other religions, said he was struck by the European perception of the church. “Those guys (at the Vatican) were really, really genuine. They had a warmth about them that was exceptionally real. They’re still really looked at with respect in Europe. I’m not really a Bible thumpin’ guy at all, but there is an aura there that is really valid and pervasive and you can’t help but get swept away in it.” “The current Pope is really down to earth and a warm human being,” Uhl continued. “He is not pompous at all.” Overall, Uhl said he came away from his experience at the Vatican with reverence and respect for the organization. In addition to participating in the Harley-Davidson celebration activities in Rome, Uhl and his family also decided to stay a little longer and take a European tour. He started in Rome, where he visited all of the ancient ruins. Then, Uhl said he hired a driver who spoke good English to take his family to Tuscany, where they visited a tiny town with families who had lived there since 1100. There, Uhl said his daughter Bella wowed the Italians as she sang an impromptu Italian opera. “She is quite the opera singer,” Uhl said. “That took the little town by surprise. That was so cool.” Afterward, Uhl said the family visited Florence and Sienna, before eventually taking a high speed train to Venice — where Uhl fell in love. “Venice totally knocked my socks off as far as the visual experience goes,” he said. “Next time I go to Italy I am taking a month for Venice because it’s just amazing. I am hugely inspired by that.” Following their Italian tour, Uhl said his family flew to Paris, where they met up with friends and were treated to a special tour of the Eiffel Tower. From there, Uhl said they traveled to the south of France, where they were able to just relax and wind down with friends. The end of the Uhl’s tour saw them traveling to Barcelona, Spain, where they were treated to tours from a local point of view. Copies of the postcard that was created for the Harley-Davidson anniversary celebration in Rome, featuring “Chance Encounter,” will be available for sale when Uhl comes to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August. Uhl will be set up at the Gold Dust Casino in Deadwood, as well as at the Buffalo Chip Campground Gallery, next to Michael Lichter’s work. In addition to the postcards, Uhl said he will also have a large selection of his newest pieces, including this year’s Sturgis pieces and another piece he did to commemorate Harley’s 110th anniversary. VINTAGE OHIO A

s my husband has had his motorcycle endorsement for over 45 years I have had a lot of experience as a passenger. And not all that long ago at his urging I got my own endorsement.

Some years back my husband told our son he needed a hobby and that hobby became motorcycles - specifically sport bikes. However his street riding turned into road racing which opened my eyes to an entirely new aspect of motorcycling. Thru my son’s experiences in club racing and as a track champion he has introduced me to all that is two wheels. Since he has been racing as a family we regularly take in the AMA Superbikes at Mid-Ohio. The opportunity arose in 2011 for him to ride in the Stars LW Class on his Suzuki SV 650 at the AMA Vintage weekend and I never expected anything like it. Since then, I’ve been hooked on this event. Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is the host for Cycle Fest each July. Its Vintage weekend is a window to the past of motorcycles. Boasting the largest swap meet of its kind you can literally build a motorcycle from the ground up. And the racing is absolutely the best. Pick your poison! From road racing on Mid-Ohio’s 2.4 mile course, motocross, hare scrambles and flat track racing at nearby Ashland County Fairgrounds there is something for everyone. The Motorcycle Hall of Fame (Columbus) showcased a variety

14

of vintage motorcycles from their collection. Also on display was a diesel powered bike that took part in the Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge. Competitors ride their motorcycles under real-world conditions while attempting to consume the least amount of fuel. For more information visit: http://iwblogger. com/2013/craig-vetter-fuel-economychallenge-at-ama-vintage-motorcycle-days/ But in addition to the bikes are the characters. This event brings competitors from all over. Racing both the road course and the flat track events were two seasoned veterans from down south. Doug Young riding #98 is from Naples Florida. Doug has been racing for over ten years. “Doc” Batsleer #35 is from Daytona Beach and has been involved in the sport since 1962. Both ride vintage road course and flat track Indians/BSA’s and follow not only the AMA Vintage circuit but also run in AHRMA another vintage series. Doc’s wife also rides and was the highest finishing woman (1st place) on the high banks of Daytona in the hand-shifter class. These guys are hard core. They love their bikes and they love to race. Vintage Weekend is like nothing else. It’s where riders of any brand of motorcycles can share in their love of two wheels. Although this year’s event has come and gone it may be something you want to mark on your calendar for next summer. Denise Kennedy Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor

Nice Rides by Nancy Beach

L

ooking for a nice bike ride that has a little bit of everything? Try a ride to Marblehead, Ohio. Marblehead is located on the Marblehead Peninsula just about 10 miles east of Port Clinton and about 12 miles west of Sandusky via Route 2. The Marblehead Peninsula divides Lake Erie from Sandusky Bay. This provides a very scenic ride where you can enjoy shoreline views that take in the Bass Islands, Cedar Point, Kelleys Island and Sandusky. Marblehead has restaurants, shops and with many parks where you can stop at for a picnic lunch. And you can’t visit Marblehead without visiting the Marblehead Lighthouse. Located on the tip of the Marblehead Peninsula, the Marblehead Lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes. Some of my favorite places to stop along the way are Netty’s for the best chili dogs ever! Big Boppers and The Crow’s Nest are two more favorites that offer outdoor seating with scenic views and home cooking. Big Bopper’s has breakfast all day long and The Crow’s Nest offers a wide variety on their menu along with an outdoor fire pit and Tiki Bar! You can check these out on their websites before you make the trip. And there are many many more little restaurants, ice creams places and little summertime bars. You will pass Netty’s and Big Boppers on your way to the 22

Marblehead Lighthouse lighthouse. They are both located on East Harbor Road which is the main road you will take through the village to get to Lighthouse Drive located at the very end of the peninsula. Netty’s 9410 E Harbor Road Big Boppers 7581 E Harbor Road

What I Did On My Summer Vacation…

T

Just two quick stories…I met a gal that is recent to the back of a bike. Ladies…you will appreciate this. When she met her guy that had a bike, she didn’t have a pair of shoes that weren’t sandals. What a great excuse to go shopping for just the right attire! And for the guys…we have all been caught in the rain. We have all run out of gas. But a friend of mine had the double whammy this summer. Ran out of gas in the pouring rain at 11:00 at night! And, was not close enough to even walk to a gas station. He found a house that had a light on and fortunately, the nice people happen to have a full gas can in their garage. He wasn’t laughing then but he is now!

by Nancy Beach

his is one of my favorite articles to write because it reminds me of all the fun and memories from the summer. It is also one of the saddest because summer is just about gone. Actually, with the totally yucky weather, I’m not sure we really had a summer. But, it doesn’t mean that our riding days are gone. Fall is one of my favorite times to ride on the back. But everyone seems to be more up-beat in the summer. It is like we are on vacation even though we are still working. I think it’s an attitude thing. You are riding to work…you talk about where you are riding on the weekend…more rides and longer rides. And you get the riding in even if you had to dodge the raindrops as we did for most of this summer!

Bean’re and Me!

Because of where I live, I get to meet a lot of riders all summer from all over the state and the nation. Living in Vacationland, where riders are always welcome, brings so many interesting people to my town and I try to talk to them all! Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Nice summer rides…fun at Ohio Bike Week…fun at the Rodeo…we all hate to see summer end but it doesn’t matter if it rains or shines! We all make the most of it. And we have a lot more fun to come for the fall. So, let’s hope for beautiful riding weather yet to come. I hope you have some wonderful memories from your summer. These are my memories of my summer vacation from the back of the bike! Enjoy!

Kamikaze jump 2013

The Year of Mud

Bob Mazur, Thunder Roads Contributor I must say the 24th annual Kamikaze jump in Ashland Ohio got off to a great start. This is my fourth year covering this event and it was the most people I have seen already camped and ready to go by Friday afternoon. Saw lots of new faces mixed in with people I have seen at every one of these. They spent the afternoon finding and setting up campsites, checking out the area and of course drinking. The band, Electric Circus started about 9, and the normal impromptu wet t-shirt contest happened like always with a few burnouts sprinkled in for entertainment. This went on most of the night into the early morning. Then the rains came. I heard lots of stories about flooded tents, various vehicles stuck in the mud, and even some accidents. However, everyone was in good spirits and wasn’t going to let a little rain slow them down. It began to clear about noon and the jump track dried enough to have some jumps and the other games as planned. The forecast never really said it was going to rain again in the afternoon, but with two jumps to go, down it came. That cancelled the remaining jumps but not the rest of the evening. Electric circus went on again a little later than planned but other than being covered in mud everybody had a blast. Wet t-shirt contest was one of the best I have seen. I woke up Sunday morning to the sounds of spinning tires as people made their way out. Lots of people lent a hand pushing and pulling vehicles out of the camping areas. Just under an inch of rain fell on Saturday per the weatherman, but it seemed like it was at least twice that much. Overall, I still wouldn’t miss one of these for the world. Great event with fantastic people. It’s always the third weekend in July. This event is unique in that they have an onsite video crew that films the event and has previous year’s DVDs available for sale (now 2004-2012). Check out the links below for pics and videos. Thunder Roads速 Magazine OHIO

Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to announce that the BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN IS BACK! This is a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio, presented by Ohio’s #1 Biker Mag - Thunder Roads Ohio! It’s a ride like no-other and features great prizes every month!

The Way it Works Each month Thunder Roads Ohio we will announce a list of Thunder Run Stops here in the magazine and online. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. Riders can then hit these locations and present their Rider Cards in order to register. Once a Rider has registered at the stop - their Card number is then entered into the drawing for that stop. Thunder Roads will then select rider checks-in’s randomly each month from across the state for special prizes and incentives. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. They may include stays at exciting stops, riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, cash, and even the opportunity to win a motorcycle or two!

Every month the TRO staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to the particular stop - and usually sponsored by that stop. For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state wide, with everyone checking in at any location eligible to win!

The Winners

The beauty and simplicity of this program is that anyone can win with any check-in, but your chances of winning are increased by the amount you ride! The dedicated rider trekking across the state has a greater chance of accumulating prizes - but the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! Every check-in counts as an entry in the “drawing” - so if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. The more you ride - the more opportunities you will have to win! That’s the whole idea - to encourage everyone to get out and ride! Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

State and Stop Prizes

If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads will post your card number both online and in the magazine. Riders will then have at least 45 days to “claim” their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will often have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning a Biketoberfest Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending the Fall Rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize - they might opt for a Premium Leather Jacket instead. • Riders are able to win multiple prizes - based upon the drawing of their check-in’s. • Some prize drawings are specific to only checkin’s for the particular month - while others prizes are drawn from check-in’s season long. • ALL CHECK-IN’s remain in the system for end of the season prizes! • Riders are able to check-in once a week at a stop (Monday-Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-in’s per month (not counting bonuses).

any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state. This is not simply a “Chinese fire drill” or mad-dash across the state. This is a Ride program. It is meant to be a means for readers to discover new riding destinations and enjoy the ride there. In fact, we have designed the program to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the state.

BONUS Check-in’s! The 2013 Buckeye Thunder Run is supported by our sponsors, so we want to encourage everyone to support them in turn. For that reason, we will issue a BONUS CHECK-IN to riders spending $10 or more at the stop. The bonus criteria may be adjusted at some stops to accommodate riders or particulars of that stop. Specifics of each stop will be listed each month in Thunder Roads as part of the Stop Listing.

It’s really that simple! 1. Get your Ohio Ride Card. 2. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH! The first step will be for riders to register for their Thunder Roads Ohio Ride Cards. A number of select locations will serve as Registration Centers. Riders can easily register at these points – free of charge. They will then receive their Ride Cards. PLEASE NOTE: You can still use your 2012 Ohio Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over. Some stops will also extra prizes for those with 2012 Ride Cards - for those “veteran riders”! Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various nonprofit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events.

Just Get Out and RIDE!

One of the really exciting aspects of the program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can be modified and added to throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners that make cool ride stops! As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

WE’VE ALREADY STARTED DRAWING FINALISTS FOR THE KAWASAKI VN900 CUSTOM Courtesy Competition Accessories, Springfield OH CHECK IN AT STOPS ACROSS OHIO - FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN THIS BIKE!

Contest Rules and Restrictions Apply and are subject to change. Contact Thunder Roads Ohio for additional information.

The Ride Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at 40

Competition Accessories The Motorcycle and ATV Mega Superstore!

American Powersport

Rt 250, Sandusky americanpowersport.com It’s undeniable that there is another motorcycle company in America and it seems clear that Victory (and Polaris) is here to stay. In Sandusky, Victory means American Powersport - the exciting new dealership right on Rt 250 just north of Route 2. Stop in and put one to the test at American Powersport. A friendly staff can help you out with a wide range of items - including just about every powersport option, yearround! From quads to snowmobiles, to electric quads - they have it all! Sales, Service, and plenty of cool Victory gear as well!

343 W. Leffels Ln, Springfield, OH 45506 I’ve never really been a believer in BIGGER is better or a fan of “Mega Superstores”.. until I became a fan of Competition Accessories and so those concepts applied to motorcycles and powers sport equipment. If you are in need of just about any type of gear, part, or accessory for your bike or ATV this is the place to go. Or if you’re just traveling on 70 between Columbus and Dayton - and want a break, this is the place to go. With over 1,000 bikes and ATV’s in stock - this is also the place to go if you’re considering something new.

Jen’s Bar

Carlton Harley-Davidson

11771 State Route 44, Mantua, OH carltonsharley.com Carlton’s is a great family owned dealership at Route 44 and 82 in Mantua. If you’ve never been there or through the area, it’s a great ride that we whole heartedly recommend. There are great roads to ride just about every direction from Carlton’s and it makes a great stop in the middle.

4047 Hamilton Middletown Rd Hamilton OH 45011 From the moment you walk into Jen’s - you feel right at home. From the comfortable atmosphere to the overly friendly staff - it’s hard not to like this bar. And there are their famous burgers and a great Sunday brunch (Biscuits and sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, bacon, and fried potatoes - all for only $5.95!) which make this a perfect stop on just about any ride. Jen’s also has live music and a great patio. Stop on by and tell them that Thunder Roads sent ya!

While the dealership is certainly a great stop - as is often the case, the journey there is what really makes the trip. For those of you in the “flatter” western or central portions of the state you may wonder if you’ve crossed into West Virginia at some point. The hills progress into mountains and wonderful switchbacks run along the rivers. For those of you unfamiliar with this area - you might be just as intrigued by the industry along the river as you are by the mountains and valleys.

been to a Quaker Steak & Lube. QS&L may or may not have invented the Bike Night concept - but they have undoubtedly brought it to a whole new level.

Thunder Roads Ohio has teamed with these four locations and made them stops on this year’s Buckeye Thunder Run. We recommend not only stopping by these locations on their Bike Night, but anytime you’re out and about. Each has their own unique spin on Bike Night Massive coal power plants, damns, and locks run along the river. and is host to fun events throughout the summer. At one point the highway runs under at least one of the plants. It’s pretty impressive. Neidengards is an Official Registration Stop for the Buckeye Thunder Run, so you can pick up your card and start there - or you can simply check in if you already have your card. Either way, it’s a cool stop that’s worth the trip!

The ride alone - through rolling hills and and miles between traffic lights - is worth the trip; however, they do offer all of the above so it’s a no-brainer! Come on out on a Wednesday for Bike Night and enjoy live entertainment on their patio. Or bring the whole crew out for a Saturday ride and enjoy legendary bands such as Colin Dussault as they rock the Tavern. Lime Green Goodness Yamaha XS650

Geof Baldwin, TRO Contributor ReturnofTheCafeRacers.com

T

he mighty Yamaha XS650 has been a hot favourite in the custom scene for decades and a personal favourite of mine. While the XS is an undeniably good base for a custom build I have to admit at times I get tired of seeing the same design approach taken time and time again. Thankfully though in my inbox today was an email from Steven Baugrud whose bright green XS650 is a minty breath of fresh air. Steven has raised the XS bar by creating an original ride that would turn more heads than Pamela Anderson (pre Tommy Lee). “The XS was purchased for $150 and supposedly “ran when parked a year ago”, which is a common thing you read on Craigslist. I never had any formal training in this, so everything I did on this bike has been self taught or learned via forums, including the welding. The bike had good compression at 160 PSI but I still tore the engine down so I could have it vapour blasted clean before rebuilding the top end.” “I powder coated the engine covers using iron glimmer and

66

retained the stock electronic ignition. The frame was modified by removing all extra tabs, the rear passenger pegs and muffler mounts, and cutting off everything behind the rear shock mounts. I then welded a new rear loop and fabbed up an electronics tray so I could hide everything underneath the seat hump.” “For something different I kept the original mag wheels instead of swapping out to spoked rims like most people do and I used Avon Speedmaster MKII tires on front and rear. The forks were rebuilt, shaved of the extra caliper mounts, and powder coated to match the frame. The triples trees were also powder coated, and I made a new dash panel to hold the kill switch, start button and neutral indicator light. A mini speedo and mini headlight round out the front end and the brakes were rebuilt using braided lines.” “I sourced the tank from an XS750 which I modified to fit the frame. New mounting tabs had to be made and Pingel petcocks added. The seat was made by Ian at Twinline Customs/ House on Fire Industries and features a concealed half moon LED light for brake and running lights. Upholstery on seat pan is genuine cow leather and was made by the talented Ginger at New Church Moto. For ease of use, I retained the kickstarter and the electric starter and I also wanted some safety features so I

used Posh style turn signals and mounted an additional brake/ running light on the side mount license bracket.” “Those high pipes are a work of art made by Scott at Gordon Scott Engineering. He tells me they were very labor intensive and he probably won’t make any more and I had them ceramic coated black. The fantastic paintwork was done by Todd Carlson using a silver base, silver HOK mini metalflake, HOK lime gold Kandy with black stripes and several coats of fuel proof automotive clear (This thing nearly blinds you in the sun!). I built this bike from day one to keep so I put a lot of attention into the details which I hope can be seen.” Good news Steven, I can see it and I’m sure I’m not alone.

U.S. Junior Motocross Team WINS 2013 FIM World Championship PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association congratulates the U.S. Junior Motocross Team for its overall title at the 2013 FIM Junior Motocross World Championships in Jinin, Czech Republic, on Aug. 10-11. The Czech Republic team finished second, and Spain was third in the team-based competition. In addition to the team title, U.S. rider Aiden Tijero, from Danville, Calif., earned the individual world championship in the 65cc class at the event, which broke participation records with 231 entries and 41 countries taking part. Rock River Racing rider Chase Sexton, from La Moille, Ill., was the top-finishing U.S. rider in the 85cc class, finishing fourth overall, while Cernics Racing’s Jarek Balkovic from Camp Hill, Pa., led the U.S. team among 125cc riders, finishing sixth overall. “I can’t begin to say how proud I am of the entire team,” said AMA Motocross Manager Kip Bigelow. “It took a commitment from every rider on the team to pull off the victory. After finishing third on the podium last year, the riders and the families knew that winning the team championship was not going to be easy. However, the team spirit was at an all-time high and working together was really important to everybody. I’m exceptionally proud of Aiden on his 65cc FIM World Championship. Aiden 74

and his teammate, Max Miller, played a big role in this victory as the only two riders in the 65cc class. By winning the class, Aiden proved that he is a true champion.” Tijero, who is a member of the KTM Orange Brigade, was joined in the 10-12 year-old 65cc class by fellow KTM rider Miller, from Springfield, Ore.

DIY TECH TIPS:

Tire SafeGuard TPMS From GoldWingDocs.com, TRO Contributor A year or so ago, I started looking into TPMS (tire pressure management systems) for motorcycles. I looked at quite a few different products, and kept coming back to one called Tire Safeguard, sold by HCI Industries. There appeared to be very little information about this unit on the Internet however. The manufacturer’s web site appears to focus to products for tractor trailers and large motorhomes, and doesn’t even make mention of a motorcycle unit. The only place the motorcycle unit seemed to be available was from the manufacturer, sold with a retail price of $189. That’s an excellent price for this type of system, so I was definitely interested. The unit can be configured to show two (motorcycle), three (trike), four (motorcycle with trailer) or five (trike with trailer) tires. I wanted to use it on my GL1500 with trailer, so I wanted the main unit and two extra tire pressure sensors. Unfortunately, there is no way to purchase this online: the pricing sheet shows extra sensors at $50 each, but in order to purchase them, it says just “Call”. I sent an email to their listed email address asking about ordering...but after several days received no reply. So I picked up the phone and called. After several phone calls, the order was placed and two days later I received my package in the mail. Opening it up, I found a sheet of (ahem) instructions, the head unit, four sensors (with “1”, “2”, “3” and “4” stickers on top), a piece of adhesive velcro to mount the unit, a USB to miniUSB cable, and a charger. Surprisingly, as soon as I took the unit out of the box, it turned on - it has a motion sensor in it that turns it on whenever it senses movement. The first thing I did was look at the (ahem) instructions. To say that they are brief would be a brief understatement. As I became familiar with the system, I realized that not only are the instructions brief, they are incomplete - there are features of the system (for instance, the ability to adjust the pressure readings to compensate for error) that aren’t even mentioned in the instructions. The instructions are brief, confusing, and poorly written. Fortunately, the device was already set up and configured for me - honestly, all I had to do was put the sensors on the appropriate tire valves, stick the unit on my dashboard, and I would be ready to go. Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

Looking at the back of the unit, you can see the port for the USB charger, a battery switch and a port for the alarm sound. The case has cutouts on the top and bottom for it to fit into a plastic mounting bracket, but no such bracket was supplied. So...the battery switch. The unit has an internal Li-Ion battery. Plug the USB charger in, switch the battery to “On”, and it will charge the battery - and the unit will be powered up while this is happening. When the unit is in battery mode, the screen backlight will turn off after ten minutes, and the unit itself will go into “sleep mode” after twenty minutes of no motion being detected. As soon as it detects motion, it switches itself back on again. If the battery switch is set to “Off”, and nothing is plugged in, the unit is off. Plug in the USB cord with it set to “Off” and the unit turns on, with the backlight on all the time (no timeout). I decided this would be how I would wire it - I mounted a small 12V-to-5V USB adapter inside my fairing, plugged the USB cord into it, and threaded the other end out to where I mounted the unit. This way, when I switch my bike on, the unit turns on and lights up, and stays that way until I turn the bike off, at which point it turns off. I’m not using the battery at all. The tire sensors are certainly quite a bit smaller than those I have seen on other TPMS systems. No information in the (ahem) instructions is given on replacing the batteries in them, but by examining them, I could deduce that rotating the black plastic portion counter-clockwise against the brass part, it could be removed - I could feel a rubber gasket in there as I turned it, although I did not open it to figure out what type of battery it uses (nor is anything mentioned about this in the instructions). SAFETY NOTE: On bikes such as the GL1500 and GL1800 that have right-angled tire valve stems, it is suicide to mount these sort of sensors on the end of the valves the considerable centripetal force exerted by the sensors on the valves, along with the plastic valve supports, can lever the rubber-based valve stems right out of the wheels when you are riding at high speed, causing an instant and catastrophic deflation. This could be deadly - so if you are considering such a system, you MUST first replace your rubber-base valve stems with with fixed, screw-in stems.

OEM valve stem with rubber base

Steel screw-in valve stem

CONTINUED... 77

The pressure sensors depress the schraeder valves inside the valve stems to allow air pressure to reach them, so you definitely don’t want the sensors accidentally coming loose, and letting all the air out of your tire. For this reason, they come with locking rings. You put the locking ring on first, then screw the sensor on. Once the sensor is tight, you put the locking ring in place against the base of the sensor, where it fits into a series of slots. You then tighten a set screw in the locking ring, which pushes against the threads on the stem to keep it from moving. You don’t need to do this too tightly, otherwise it can damage the stem. I thought about using some thread locking solution on the set screw, but quickly realized that the sensor and locking ring will need to be removed every time air is added to the tire - so keep the included allen key on hand in a place you won’t lose it! Once installed, the sensor is quite unobtrusive, and much smaller than sensors I have seen on other systems. I don’t know whether or not the sensor is heavy enough to affect wheel balance, because I have Dynabeads in my tires, which automatically adjust to any wheel imbalance.

and high temperature. It will also alert you to a slow leak. The unit beeps and flashes a red light when these occur. Overall I’m quite pleased with the unit, and I’m glad I purchased it, and I would give the following initial impressions. Pros: - Obviously very well engineered - Small sensors - Graphics and numbers on the screen are easy to read and interpret at a glance - Works out of the box with no configuration or sensor “learning” required - Simple installation - Large screen Cons: - Dismal instructions - Large screen (yes, it’s also a Con, as it makes it more challenging to find a place to mount it) A Year later... After a year on my bike, I’d offer the following update: I still love it - its combination of features is exactly what I was looking for - so much so, that I bought a second unit to install on my wife’s bike. Pros:

I also installed sensors 3 and 4 on my trailer wheels. It had rather long rubber valve stems, so I replaced them with small, steel stems as well. Once powered up, the unit starts looking for signals from the wheels. It cycles through each wheel, about a second at a time, showing the temperature and tire pressure of each one. It appears that each sensor has a small motion sensor in it, because as long as the wheel isn’t moving, it does not show a reading on the screen. Once the wheel has moved however, it continuously updates the reading on the screen. It would show pressures and temperatures for my motorcycle, but not for my trailer (which was located on the other side of the garage). I went over to the trailer, gave each of its wheels a kick, and the device then started reading pressures and temperatures from the trailer wheels. So how does it work? Amazingly well! I was blown away by what my tires are doing at highway speed. My front tire remains only slightly above ambient temperature while the pressure increases about 5 psi, whereas my rear tire increased 6 psi and went up from 80 degrees (ambient), leveling out at 111 degrees. I expect this is from lack of airflow around the rear wheel. There are alerts you can set up for low pressure, high pressure

• The bright, big screen lets you see your tire pressures at a glance, day or night •It plugs directly into a 5 volt USB power supply, so it is easily powered by your bike - no batteries to deal with •It easily reconfigures to show my trailer (or not) depending on whether or not I’m towing it •Sensors are easily removeable to top up tire pressures • I love seeing the tire temperatures, which tells me early on of any pending problems. I’m amazed at how hot the rear tire gets, with all the hot engine air back there! Cons: • The maximum pressure for the alert is too low for Goldwings with Avon tires. I run the rear at 51psi cold when loaded, and this goes up quite a bit when the tire gets hot - beyond what you can set for the over pressure warning. I’ve communicated this to the manufacturer, they said they’re going to look into changing it. •The beeper alarm is incessant (see overpressure warning, above). I solved this by disassembling it and ripping the beeper off the circuit board. •The sensor batteries don’t last anywhere near what I would like. I get around 3 months or 2,000 miles out of them. There’s no warning of a low battery, it just stops working for that tire. Batteries can be had for cheap online, however.

Buckeye firearms report By Jim Irvine

WARNING: This intense, all-day class deals bluntly and graphically with real-world violence and lethal self-defense. We recommend this workshop for adults and mature teens ONLY. It will do for your mind and spirit what body armor does for your torso.

Bulletproof your mind with Col. Dave Grossman!

The bad guys are out there. They’re assaulting, raping, and murdering your fellow citizens every day. And when you least expect it, they could choose you and your family as their next victims. Will you be a sheepdog? Or will you be a sheep? Don’t be fooled. Having a gun gives you an edge. But a gun is only as powerful as the mind that controls it. Without the proper mindset, without having the mental tools to survive when absolutely everything goes wrong, you’re nothing but a sheep with a firearm. But now you can prepare yourself for the worst and be ready to survive a lethal force encounter. You will have the rare opportunity to bullet-proof your mind with one of the world’s leading authorities on human aggression and violent crime. Buckeye Firearms Association is honored to present Lt. Col. Dave Grossman in an intense, one-day mind training workshop called The Bulletproof Mind: Tactical Mindset for Armed Citizens. Take your self-defense preparation to the next level ... and learn mental skills for even the worst lethal force encounter! You’ve rehearsed shooting an attacker, but have you mentally prepared for being shot? You know how to fight when everything goes right, but do you know the steps to take when everything goes wrong? Because it almost certainly will! Your worst enemy isn’t the thug about to beat you with a tire iron. Your worst enemy is denial. Denial that you will actually be attacked. Denial that your body will shake and your hands will tremble. Denial that you will hesitate at the final moment to do what needs to be done. But now you can prepare for your worst nightmare and be ready when it happens. Ready to take direct hits and keep on fighting. Ready to recognize the signs of threat and take control fast and hard. Ready to make that terrible but necessary decision when your life or the lives of your loved ones are at stake. It’s not about bravery. It’s about mental preparation. Col. Grossman says, “Denial kills you physical, mentally, and financially. It has no survival value. Chew it up, spit it out, get rid of it. This is the moment of truth. No more denial. Rid yourself of every ounce.” Thunder Roads Magazine OHIO ®

Get the best mind training in America from the leading authority on violence and combat! Lt. Col. Dave Grossman is an internationally recognized scholar, author, soldier, and speaker who is one of the world’s foremost experts in the field of human aggression and the roots of violence and violent crime. He is the author of On Killing, a groundbreaking book nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and required reading for U.S. Marines and FBI trainees. A former Airborne Ranger infantry officer and paratrooper, Grossman has over 23 years experience in leading U.S. soldiers worldwide. In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he is on the road almost 300 days a year, training elite military and law enforcement organizations worldwide about the reality of combat. Lt. Col. Grossman is a West Point psychology professor, Professor of Military Science, and founder of a new field of scientific endeavor called “killology.” He has made revolutionary new contributions to our understanding of killing, the psychological costs of war, the causes of the “virus” of violent crime around the world, and the process of healing victims of violence. He has been an expert witness and consultant in state and Federal courts, including serving on the prosecution team in UNITED STATES vs. TIMOTHY MCVEIGH. He helped train mental health professionals after the Jonesboro school shootings, and he was also involved in counseling or court cases in the aftermath of the Paducah, Springfield, and Littleton school shootings. He has testified before U.S. Senate and Congressional committees and numerous state legislatures, and he has been cited in a national address by the President of the United States. This isn’t a polite chat about mindset. Col. Grossman speaks vividly, bluntly, and from personal experience about how unprepared people really are in our society. On sheep vs. sheep dogs: “Sheep have only two speeds: graze and stampede. They quickly sink back into denial. At Virginia Tech nobody put up a fight. They waited to die. The only survival trick they knew was ‘freeze’. Once upon a time, America was full of sheep dogs. Now we’re raising a nation of sheep.”

On surviving gunshots: “If the threat is no longer viable, and if you’ve been shot, get yourself out of the line of fire. Don’t make your friends expose themselves to get to you. If the threat remains, stop the threat. You can take a bullet to the heart and have 5 to 7 seconds before you will be out of combat. You’re not dead! Keep going!” On school shootings: “The Virginia Tech mass-murderer chose the building he attacked because it had no ground-floor windows and only three doubledoors that could be chained from the inside. How many kids have to die before every class has two exits and a securable door? If teachers can be fired for failure to do fire drills, how much more mean and ugly should we be to those who refuse to prepare for violence?” On training for violence: “Firefighters face fire to train so we must face stress and fear. Through force-on-force training. The first time you go through a force-on-force scenario, your heart rate can jump to over 200 beats per minute. The more you do it, the more your heart rate comes down. Inoculation to fear is the key.” The Bulletproof Mind: Tactical Mindset for Armed Citizens can prepare you and your family to be strong in any situation. You will learn how to be the sheepdog instead of the sheep. Many of us from Buckeye Firearms Association will be there. We hope to see YOU there too. Hurry, we expect this event to fill up fast. PARTY IN A FIELD Wetzel 2013

erry h C e n o t Black S I told the Wetzel MC I’d give them a shout out after attending their 27th Annual Biker Bash that was held the last weekend in July. If you aren’t familiar with their Annual Biker Bash you are missing out! Take a 100 Acre farm filed, wrap it in 10 ft chain link fence, hire a few great bands, and you have yourself a party with a few thousand friends. Here is their excerpt from their own website at www.WetzelMC.com; On a Friday Afternoon in the Summer of 1986 a group of friends were gathering at another friends motorcycle garage planning to take a road trip the next day. One of the friends remarked that he needed to get a bigger gas tank. One of the guys spoke up that he had a spare tank and that they could bolt it on for the weekend. The guy that needed the bigger tank said that he had to go to work and wouldn’t have time to change tanks before they left in the morning. Being the good friends that they were they all agreed to change the tanks and have the bike ready for him when he got off work, and that they would all meet at the local watering hole. The guy goes off to work trading bikes with the one who would ride the completed bike to the watering hole, another goes to get the bigger tank and the rest start to remove the small tank. When the bigger tank comes back the gentleman who has to ride the completed uptown said he won’t ride it because it was so UGLY! Again being the good friends they were, they taped off some flames and grabbed a can of spray paint and repainted the tank. One of them picks up a brush and letters in “PROPERTY OF WETZEL M C” when the tank is dry they all leave to go to their local watering hole to wait for their friend to get off work. Pretty soon their friend gets off of work and shows up and starts asking who owns the bike with the flames and what is a WETZEL M C? They then proceed to tell him that the bike was his own and that he had not recognized it. This was the start of WETZEL M.C. They go on to say how they have donated over $100K to many charity benefactors. One of the things that I love about attending is that history. Our club attended and rented a large 20x30 pavilion tent. It’s a good deal as the tent company goes up the week ahead of you and sets it up and tears it down for you. All you do is show up, rope off your area and you’re ready to go. This year I rented a golf cart and took it up with us. I really think this is a must, but there are many people that prefer to walk around to visit the many vendors and food options. We always take our own grill for the club and throw on some burgers and Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

dogs throughout the day. I did purchase a really nice new leather vest for the Ole Lady and a new half helmet for myself. (Hey, it was my Birthday Weekend so I bought myself a present!) My only regret was not taking Friday off from work and going up earlier. I will warn you that the weekend isn’t cheap, but none of the big events are cheap anymore. By the time I paid for our van, trailer, golf cart, and the Ole Lady I was already out like $100 Bucks. If you take a camper it’s like $200 just for the camper and that doesn’t include the truck you pulled it with or admission for the driver and passengers. Something that I wasn’t aware of until this year is that the President of an MC does get free admission. That was a nice bonus. Only thing is unless you pay you won’t receive the entry tickets to win the brand new HD that is given away every year. All in all, I think it’s worth every dime to party with my brothers, other clubs, and friends that attended. I enjoy making it my Birthday plans every year. Bring your tent or camper, and make plans to join us next year and join one hell of a party in a field! Thanks for Reading! Tabasco Tabasco.tro@gmail.com Photos courtesy Iron Cowboy, TRO

K.I.S.S. page composed & edited by: Toni McCoy Shearon aka “MaMa Thunder” of Thunder Roads Tennessee i have chosen this name for our monthly recipe page, as that was what my mother, rest her soul, always used to say when I would assist her in the kitchen. mom was an avid supporter of the kiss (keep it simple sweetie) method of cooking. i now, more than ever, truely appreciate her philosophy of always taking shortcuts where you can, as long as your ultimate outcome is that of down home, labor of love cooking.

FINGER LICKIN’ WINGS.....CAJUN STYLE

Mix together as a rub in a large bowl: 1 tsp. of ground red pepper or Cayenne pepper 1 Tbls. of Dry Mustard 1 Tbls. of Dry Thyme 1 Tbls. of Dry Mustard 1 Tbls. of Onion Powder 1 Tbls. of Garlic Powder 1 Tbls. of Smoked Paprika 1 Tbls. of Hot Paprika 1 Tbls. of Regular Paprika 1 Tbls. of Parsley 1 Tbls. of Basil Heat up your grill to medium high. Brush rack with olive oil * This rub is based on enough for 20 wings. If you have more, just double or triple the recipe amounts. Fresh ground black pepper & salt to taste Take your wings and cut-off the wing tips. These really have hardly any meat on them. Now, take your solid wing pieces and cut winds at joint. This makes each wing a manageable and fair size for eating. Dry your wings off thoroughly and 3 at a time, add to bowl and coat completely both sides. Don’t shake off excess. Place on a platter to take out to grill. Arrange wings in a straight lines on grill and grill on each side for 4 minutes with lid closed. Then move wings either over to an unlit side of grill or up to the top shelf to continue cooking 3-4 more minutes to ensure no pinkness at the bone. The wings should have a great blackened look to them from the rub and the flavor is amazing! Serve with bleu cheese dressing, Ranch, or whatever your favorite dipping sauce might be. Gimme’ some wing, baby!

TOMATO PIE

1 9-inch Pie Shell, prebaked per instructions 2 Tbls. Dijon Mustard 4 Home-Grown or Market Stand Tomatoes; Peeled & Sliced into solid 1/4 inch slices 4 Ounces White Cheddar cheese; grated 4 Ounces Yellow Cheddar cheese; grated 1/2 Cup of (premium) Mayonnaise 1/3 Cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese Preheat oven to 350 degrees Spread the entire inside of the pie crust with mustard; all up the sides and even on the crust. Layer the tomatoes in the crust in a lap over effect and Thunder Roads® Magazine OHIO

sprinkle with salt and fresh cracked pepper. Top with the Cheddar cheese. Mix together the mayo & Parmesan and spread that on top of pie. Sprinkle dried Parsley all over the top of that and bake apprx. 20 mins. Let cool and serve at room temp. * I always drizzle thinned down Ranch dressing on my slice, but that’s your choice. Any way you take it, this pie is one delicious side dish.

MaMa Thunder’s SUPER SIMPLE CHEESE & BACON BISCUITS

1 Cup of shredded Cheddar Cheese 1/2 Cup of shredded Monterey Jack Cheese 4 Cups of Bisquick brand biscuit Mix (box) 2 Cups of Whole Milk Salt & Freshly Ground Black Pepper to taste 1/2 Cup of crumbled bacon bits (cooked crisp but not burned) 1 Tbls. of Bacon Grease Spray a large non-stick backing sheet with non-stick spray (better to be safe than sticky) Take an ice-cream scoop (the kind with the scoop out handle on the side) and drop equal amounts of biscuit dough onto sheet pan. Allow for them to spread out some. Now, in a small bowl, melt down a 1/2 stick of butter with 1/2 tsp. of Garlic Powder. Take a basting brush (I just use cheap 50 cent paint brushes) and baste biscuits generously with garlic/ butter mix. Bake for 12 to 15 mins. until they are cracked on top and golden brown. Take out of oven and immediately baste generously with more garlic/butter. Oh MaMa.... these make me slap myself upside the head!

K.I.S.S. TIPS:

Instead of using buttermilk, milk or water in the next batch of pancakes you make, try substituting with lemon-lime soda. Your pancakes come out light as air and just begging for lots of butter and warm maple syrup. Use your crock-pot for mac n’ cheese. Just add 1 cup of elbow macaroni, 1 can of Campbell’s cheddar cheese soup, same can, only full of whole milk, pinch of nutmeg and a 1/2 stick of butter. Let cook on high for an hour. Fab Mac!

3-D HEAD CUSTOM PAINT® KNOXVILLE, TN 865-621-9836 Ask for KENNY or TONY

A nasty old biker named “TAZ” walks into a bank and says to the woman at the teller window “I want to open a #!@#? checking account.” The astonished woman replies, “I beg your pardon, sir. I must have misunderstood you. What did you say?” “Listen up, &*#!#$@ it. I said I want to open a &*#!#$@ checking account now!” “I’m very sorry sir, but that kind of language is not tolerated in this bank.”The teller leaves the window and goes over to the bank manager to inform him of her situation. The manager agrees that the teller does not have to listen to that foul language. They both return to the window and the manager asks the old biker, “Sir, what seems to be the problem here?” “There is no &*#!#$@ problem,” the man says. “I just won 50 million dollars in the damn lottery and I want to open a damn checking account in this damn bank!” “I see, “ says the manager, “and is this %$@%@ giving you a hard time?” __________________________________________________________________ HOW TO CALL THE POLICE WHEN YOU’RE AN OLD BIKER Biker George was going up to bed when his wife told him that he’d left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things. He phoned the police, who asked “Is someone in your house?” and he said “no”. Then they said that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be along when available. George said, “Okay,” hung up, counted to 30, and

phoned the police again. “Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don’t have to worry about them now because I’ve just shot them all.” Then he hung up. Within five minutes three police cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up at the Phillips’ residence and caught the burglars red-handed. One of the Policemen said to George: “I thought you said that you’d shot them!” George said, “I thought you said there was nobody available!” __________________________________________________________________ Two Arabs boarded a flight out of London. One took a window seat and the other sat next to him in the middle seat. Just before takeoff, an American Biker sat down in the aisle seat. After takeoff, the Biker kicked his boots off, wiggled his toes and was settling in when the Arab in the window seat said, “I need to get up and get a coke.” “ Don’t get up,” said the Biker, “I’m in the aisle seat; I’ll get it for you.” As soon as he left, one of the Arabs picked up the Biker’s boot and spat in it. When he returned with the coke, the other Arab said, “That looks good, I’d really like one, too.” Again, the Biker obligingly went to fetch it. While he was gone the other Arab picked up his other boot and spat in it. When the Biker returned, they all sat back and enjoyed the flight. As the plane was landing, the Biker slipped his feet into his boots and knew immediately what had happened. “Why does it have to be this way?” he asked. “How long must this go on? This fighting between our nations? This hatred? This animosity? This spitting in boots and pissing in cokes?”
