Letter From The
EDITOR
June is here. Half the year is flying by us. Crank back the throttle and let’s catch up! May brought the start of a spectacular summer of rallies, events and fun. Bike Nights had a small blurp in the OKC area by the law, but recovered in a short week’s time. Our beloved May Daze Rally was also effected by the law and unfortunately was unable to run their Spring event. We look forward to the Fall event. We wish the Banister’s the best in making that happen. This issue is once more jam packed. I was able to arrange an awesome shoot with the Batman Bike which I’ve been admiring for some time now. Bryan Barker owns it and Ryan Townsend painted it. Maverick did a kick butt job on photographing it for us so you can see every tiny detail. Good work done by all. Enjoy! I can’t wait to fill you guys in on the trip I’m about to take. I’m rushing to finish this letter to the Editor so I can hop on Lola, loaded to the gills, and run the First Annual Breast Ride Ever all women’s ride. You should watch for that story coming to you in July. It’s going to be 1500 miles of women in pink riding for Breast Cancer Awareness. My sincerest condolences to those who suffered loss in the recent tragic Oklahoma and Arkansas storms. May the summer push out the havoc of those storms that Spring has reeked upon us. I also have to send prayers to the Thunder Roads National Editors/Owners, Toni and Brian, as they suffered a complete loss of their home in Tennessee. May those in that area find relief soon as well. Please attend the runs and events that are coming up to assist all of these storm victims. We are bikers. We are ONE. We can overcome when the rest of the world still doesn’t give a shit….. just put bluntly! Rally around our biker families and help them. On a positive note….check out our ads from Eureka Springs. We added several new ones. Thanks to Babycakes for her diligence in this area. Visit the new advertisers shops and websites. Tell the TRM OK/AR sent you! It’s a great place to ride to and around. Go play! Go take in the mountains, streams and valleys! Vacation on those bikes!!!

Letter To The Editors Again this month, we have a unique letter to the editor. This letter came to me following the death of Russell Doza, a Rogues Motorcycle Club member who was shot inside the Rogues’ clubhouse in Tulsa, OK. He was killed by multiple gunshots by the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Department Special Operations Division while they were serving a search warrant upon individuals in the clubhouse for alleged drug sales activity. This shooting is currently under investigation. While much speculation abounds, the true tragedy is a man had to die at the hand of other men. I know many brothers of Russell mourn his death. My condolences go out to the brothers, sisters, friends and family of this biker. Thank you Half-Bob for your submission. Your Riding Writer, “T” The Following Letter submitted by Half-Bob, Rogues Motorcycle Club Chaplain, Wichita, KS. To the good people of Oklahoma: In Johnny Hart’s BC comic strip, a young aunt asks, “Mom, what’s a label?” She replied, “Something they give a person so they can be hated without knowing them first.” To those that just don’t know, and those just stuck on stupid…All motorcycles aren’t the same; all Motorcycle Clubs are not the same. The word “Biker” and “Motorcycle Club” conjure up thoughts of running gun battles, killing each other, dope dealing, gang raping the girls, gang beating the boys, and kicking their little dogs. The Rogues Motorcycle Club is not a “Gang.” We have not had ANY gun fights with other clubs or law enforcement. All of our clubhouses are in the rougher parts of town and are a target for the real GANGS, thieves and idiots that would deface or steal club property or disturb our peace. That’s why steel doors and windows are in place with door-men. We don’t as a club commit crimes such as selling drugs; hence we are in poor parts of town. D.A.’s, sheriffs, etc. live in fancy parts of town or in gated communities with guards and cameras. Law enforcement has cameras everywhere these days. Why is it when we take measures to protect ourselves and our property it is perceived as “criminal” and is used to generate NO KNOCK WARRANTS that should themselves be illegal? As I said at Russell’s funeral, “what we want is Justice from the justice system; not the JUST-US SYSTEM. What we want is ALL evidence put before the people in a Grand Jury investigation. We feel Russell was executed. L.E. has another side. Again, let the Grand Jury decide. Not the cops who are friends with the shooting cops nor the D.A. that may be biased by “labels.” Let’s hear the truth, put the guilty in jail. Just like us. As a member of the RMC, I’ve never made threats. Only kept promises. We have NOT made threats or promises against TCSO. I suggest this was published to be able to continue to use heavy-handed tactics concerning us and all clubs. As a chaplain I’ve learned “when guilty, the guilty accuse first.” This retaliation rumor sounds like it comes from a guilty conscience. I mentioned at Russell’s funeral my war will be with an ink pen…not a gun. This is my first shot and I have lots of ink. Again what we want is a Grand Jury investigation. STOP No Knock Warrants executed on us, the execution of us stopped and like all clubs, be left alone. With God, all things are possible. Thunder Roads Magazine 4
Rising Artist: Ryan Townsend Story By: “T” Pics By: Brandon “Maverick” Last Summer I did a little article on a guy that I met at the National HOG Rally. His name is Ryan Townsend. I was impressed with that at the time and saw a tank he was working on that he now calls the ‘dragon’ bike. But look what Ryan is doing now! This newest bike, The Batman Bike, owned by Bryan Barker of OKC, OK, is spectacular. Bryan has been taking his bike to Ryan with everything Batman that he can think to add to it. It is looking awesome. Enough so, that I wanted it as the cover bike the moment I saw it. Ryan has been drawing and sketching since he was very young. His dad is Robin Townsend, who has painted for years around central Oklahoma. Ryan said that he actually started drawing when he was just old enough to hold a pencil. He said he has always wanted to be a professional artist. One of his oldest memories was while sitting at the dining room table with his older brother while his dad taught them how to draw batman. He did say that his mother, too, motivated he and his brother to persue that profession. Like all of us, Ryan searched hard to find what he wanted to do with his life. He says, “I think the reason I took to art so much is that I always wanted something to set me apart from the rest of the kids in class. Once I found out that my ability to draw was a little better than everyone else then that became my “thing” from then on. I wasn’t the smartest kid in class, I wasn’t the fastest kid in class and learning to play the guitar was too hard, so why not stick with the drawing thing. I turned it into a competition. If I ever saw anyone that could do it better than me then I did everything I could to get better than them. I didn’t want anyone taking my “thing” from me. Through my entire school career I would enter every single art competition I could. For me it was like winning a basketball game or scoring the game winning touchdown. Ryan said that it was funny that he never really wanted to paint cars Thunder Roads Magazine 6
while growing up. Although he worked in the shop with his dad since about 14 years old, he didn’t see the art in it. His dad did flame jobs and different other graphics on cars, but he thought all painters did that. He has even worked at Frontier City and a few other jobs as an artist. As most artist experience, he was struggling on his own and getting into trouble. He went back to work for his dad prepping motorcycles for paint because it was getting pretty popular at the time. They were doing something like three or four custom jobs a week. He remembers that it was a good time to be a custom painter. At that time, his dad started teaching Matt, “Paint Man”, how to paint. Matt and Ryan would prep the bikes, Robin would lay out the artwork and the boys would finish them. Just like life, things were just great when tragedy struck his family. He remembered the story, “Our business was off and running and looking as if we were going to take off until my dad got into a car accident in 2003. He came up missing and I found him 24 hours later at the bottom of a creek bed. The steering had failed in his car the night before and sent him off of a cliff ejecting him through the windshield and breaking his neck and lower back. Because
of where the car landed you couldn’t see it from the road and It took 24 hours before a neighbor and I found him face down in the mud. My dad had to learn how to do everything again just like a new born baby would. It took close to a year before he could take care of himself. Needless to say that this brought my days as a painter to a screeching halt, so I moved to Dallas to attend the Art Institute of Dallas.” Ryan attended the Art Institute of Dallas to study Graphic Design and Animation. He spent five years there going to school a apprenticing as a tattoo artist. Like most artists, things started to get pretty hard for him after a while, so he moved back home in 2008. His dad said that he had some people asking him to do some airbrush work and wanted him to give it a try. He said he didn’t know hardly anything about airbrushing at the time but figured he’d give it a try. When I asked what the first thing he airbrushed was he said, “I think the first thing I worked on was a helmet with a joker face on the back. It took me two days and when I was done it looked pretty good and was way more fun than the racing stripes and flames that we had done in the past. I thought, “I can do this”..” I asked Ryan to tell me about the airbrush portrait training he at-
tended and what the name of his trainer was. I recalled him saying that it came so easily for him to get instruction from one of the trainers over the other as you could relate to him so easily. When asked to share a bit about that experience which seemed to have rocketed him into a new plateau, he answered with the following, “I still didn’t like the “airbrush/stencil” look that you typically think of when you think of an airbrushed painting. I started thinking why can’t I use my airbrush the same way that I learned to paint in college. I didn’t like cutting out stencils anyway so I stopped using them and started using my airbrush like a paintbrush. At this point I have became completely obsessed with airbrushing and my competitive drive to be keep getting better started coming back to me. I was researching artwork on the internet one day and came across this artist named Cory St. Clair. Cory had a style that was dead on to what I was trying to teach myself. I also found that he was teaching a class in Las Vegas on advanced portrait techniques. I had been self taught up to this point and was doing pretty good, but I wanted to get better. So I jumped at the chance to go. I learned more than I could have hoped to in his class. His style was spot on what I was already trying to perfect on my own, and I feel like I absorbed it like a sponge. I painted
a portrait of Willie Nelson. I had only been airbrushing for a year, but I knocked this portrait out of the park. Since then my work just keeps getting better and better every day and I’m having a blast doing it. It feels good to step back and say “I did that”. It’s kind of funny that I spent most of my life trying to figure out how to make a living with my artwork and it was the family trade all along.” He said his favorite type of painting is portraits next to pin ups and he’d like to improve most in the area of pin striping. Ryan recently attended the Cancer Sucks event where he was given a fender of one bike to paint while there and then the promoter, Rick, brought him his entire bike to paint right there in front of everyone. I asked him to share about that experience. Ryan said, “The Cancer Sucks Bike is cool because that show was so fun. Rick was really cool and I love what he is doing to help the fight against cancer. I really like how biker friendly his organization is as well. I don’t know. It’s just cool. I will say that the image he is having me paint on the back of his bike is pretty cool too!” In getting ready for this interview, I had stayed in touch with Ryan and was keeping up on his assignments. One of which he’s been adding to each day for months. It is a tribute trike illustrating a customer’s life Thunder Roads Magazine 7
Harrison Is Motorcycle
from flying Huey helicopters in Vietnam to his later years as a test pilot. Right now he’s trying to illustrate the two times he was shot down in Vietnam running supplies to the troops. Ryan commented on how he felt about it, “I have to say that I am really feeling the pressure on this one. It’s taking me longer than we would like to get it finished, but this is a man’s memories and I don’t want to get it wrong. I know it won’t look exactly like he remembers, but I still want to do a good job on it. Hopefully when it’s finished he will be proud to ride it and hand it down through his family.” I have to thank Ryan for his time. I admire his talent. I come from a family of artists so he and I have that odd artsy way about us that the rest of the world just may not understand. I’m happy to be able to share your story with our readers. Look for more artist profiles in months to come at TRM.

Partying Days at Washita Hideaway By: “T” Pics By: Brandon “Maverick” There is one heck of a beautiful rally grounds nestled back in the trees and “down by the river” near Davis, Oklahoma. It’s very appropriately called Washita Hideaway. I’d never been there before their Spring rally. I was so glad that we were able to make that trip as it was absolutely gorgeous. Not to mention, how nice everyone there was through the entire weekend. As usual, we pulled into the rally grounds late the night prior to the rally. Since the grounds are nestled along the river bank and surrounded by tall, lush green trees and forest, it was pitch black. Biker, Don, came rolling up on his gorgeous steed shining headlights anywhere we needed them in getting the Thunder Roads rally caravan of motor home and TRM trailer set in place. He and a couple other partying gals were much help in advising us, best they could, as to where they thought we should be. It may be no surprise that they all seemed to have had a different opinion, but low and behold we got parked and set up in good time. This was the first time we’d rolled out in the rally caravan for this season. Much to my surprise, once I hit the power to turn on the water, I could hear Niagra Falls throughout the kitchen and bathroom. Maverick let out a hollar from outside piercing the darkness to let me know that water was pouring out from the bottom of the motorhome. Yes folks! We set out on this journey to find that over the winter we’d had a little freeze occur. Thank goodness for the wonderful clean hot showers at Washita! By the second night, a quick ride into town and we had the lines repaired and all was well. Not to mention that we stopped by a kickin’ barbeque place that served the BEST barbeque I’ve had in some time. And so much of it, nearly everyone around us had to take an entire meal home with what was leftover. I believe it was called Smokin’ Joe’s. Enough about the ongoing saga of life on the road! Let’s talk about this rally. I can’t say enough good things about how beautiful the grounds were. There’s this large meadow surrounded by trees. A river runs down half of the property. The parking places for campers and tents are nice and level with plenty of tree coverage to keep the sun off. The meadow is completed by a very large stage at one end. We were right next door to the stage and feeling fortunate to be placed in such a great spot. We didn’t miss one bit of the action all weekend right from the confines of our TRM booth. And action there was! Bands entertained us both nights. I got to meet a die-hard TRM fan TC Love with Southern Heat. They rocked the house til weeeee hours of the morning. Loved hearing their music selections. They truly know the music we bikers party to! Not only were they great with the music, but they created quite a gigantic prize pot for the skin to win which seemed to
Thunder Roads Magazine 10
be about the most popular event of the weekend. On Saturday afternoon, we were entertained by a long wonderful stretch of bike games. There’s no better afternoon than watching a group of riders, some sober, riding, biting wienies, tossing kegs, slow poking, pushing kegs and tire pulling. Good ole country biking fun! Now let’s back up a minute….I want to throw in a tidbit about tire pulling. Who on earth said, “Bob. I’m gonna sit on my bike. You run down yonder, drink up that beer in that tire, throw her over your shoulder, run your butt back here, TIE yourself onto the back of my bike and I’m gonna give’er all she’s got down there to that finish line. Do you have a brother that’ll grab that other tire? I think we can beat ‘em!” Thank you! There was the origination of one of my most favorite sports…the tire pull. Can’t wait to see it added to the next Olympics. OK…so back to this rally. It was fun. We lucked out and got some spectacular weather, while everywhere else around had storms brewing, rain falling and wind advisories, we were nestled back in the foothills of Southern Oklahoma. Enjoying Springtime. But wait folks. Don’t be sad if you missed this one. There will be another Washita Hideaway Rally coming July 16, 17 & 18. AND get ready because my good ole friend Jim Dandy will be there!! Black Oak Arkansas baby! They’ll be playing right there on that big wonderful Washita Hideaway stage. Rock on!!! Go check out the previous coverage I did on this band. I think it was September or October 2009. You can find it at www.thunderroadsoklahoma.com. Better yet, go see this rockin’ slammin’ band yourself in July! The Walkers would love to have you. We really enjoyed meeting them and thank them for their generous hospitality!

Ride Masters Brings New Concept to Riders By: “T” When two men that have had 45 years of successful business experience in the technical industry came up with a first ever business concept to Oklahoma, they couldn’t get the doors open fast enough. Ken McCarty and Brian Lewis have opened a shop in which you can pull in to the store on your bike or ATV and pull out within a brief period of time and get you back on the road. Their motto is “Let’s Just Ride”. They want you in and out of the shop quickly so you can use your bike for what you bought it for…Riding it! After many attempts to get their oil changed quickly, they’d given up. It seemed that every time anyone they knew took their bikes in for fluid changes, accessory upgrades or swaps, tire sales, service, mounting or balancing, they had to schedule it 3 weeks in advance and didn’t get their bike back for sometimes days. They decided that needed to be changed. They now own Ride Masters Motorcycle and ATV Quick Lube and Custom Accessories store. It is located at 1501 S Memorial Dr, Tulsa, OK. Their number is 918-828-0900. They have a full inventory of tires and bolt-on accessories along with install customization service. They can meet the needs of Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and more. They love to personalize your bike to make it “yours”. Ken and Brian ask that you give them the opportunity to do a satisfying job of servicing your ride with a pleasing customer experience. I recently attended the Open House of Ride Masters. They shop is very nice. It’s an easy access location and they are as friendly as they can be. I recommend you stop in and get to know them. You will be happy you did and your bike or ATV will thank you for it!

Hello to all my Motorcycling friends! Well, by the time you read this, we’ll be getting ready to reach the end of the 2010 Oklahoma Legislative Session, which I’m gratified to say has turned out to be one of the most successful in ABATE’s two-decade history. The capstone came about at the beginning of May, when riders all over the state noticed messages on Electronic Bulletin Boards urging motorists to look twice, watch out for motorcyclists and Share the Road! I’m proud to announce that all of our bills of interest passed and were signed into law by Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry. In mid-April, the Governor signed “Gunner’s Law”, our Motorcycle Rider Education, Training, Safety and Awareness bill and the bill naming on July 1 three experienced riders to the Oklahoma Motorcycle Advisory Council; legislation was signed authorizing ABATE of Oklahoma specialty license plates and the Governor also signed into law our Malfunctioning Traffic Light bill. After November 1, bikes that don’t trigger the light to turn green will be able to proceed through a controlled intersection after stopping and determining it safe to do so, essentially treating the intersection as at a Stop Sign. This makes FOUR major pieces of legislation ABATE has advanced have been signed into law by May 1, and the fifth, legislation clarifying and solidifying verbiage in “Jaggers’ Law”, our Failure to Yield Legislation, was signed two weeks later. Most bills will take effect November 1, the standard beginning date for new legislation. What a way to celebrate ABATE’s Twentieth Anniversary! Many thanks to all those ABATE Members and others who worked diligently to make this happen--you have my gratitude! Be sure to voice your thanks to ABATE Lobbyist Suzette Northcutt-Rhodes, Legislative Coordinator John Pierce, our Legislative Committee and all those who spent scores of hours lobbying at the Capitol on behalf of Oklahoma’s Motorcycling Community. Another legislative development passed in April that might help achieve this goal involves the Governor signing a bill penalizing those pulled over for driving dangerously with hand-held cell phone use contributing, and a bill penalizing sending text messages while driving. Please pick up the phone and thank your Representatives and Senators for voting “YES” on the bills ABATE has sponsored--we need to keep cultivating those political friendships. I heartily salute each and every one of ABATE of Oklahoma’s and the OK Confederation of Clubs officers and members, all of whom dedicate their time on a volunteer basis, and look forward to our continued success working together in the spirit of unity. “Gunner” Catcher, our dearly departed Brother and victim of America’s Right to Drive Stupidly, would be immensely proud of each of you for continuing his legacy! Additionally, Channel 4 News in OKC announced the third week of April that Oklahoma motorcyclist deaths in 2009 were the lowest they’ve been in ELEVEN YEARS, reflecting a recent downward trend Nationwide! Though sadly, one of those involved someone very special to us, if Gunner’s Law does what we anticipate, this reduction of Biker deaths and injuries in the Sooner State will become a trend. The Governor graciously again issued the State Proclamation designating May as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month, which was read at the OK Confederation Of Clubs Meeting in Medicine Park. I went to Norman on May 11 to accept their City Proclamation and thank the Mayor and City Council. Many thanks also go to you folks who worked hard to secure local Motorcycle Safety Proclamations from Thunder Roads Magazine 16
municipalities and counties throughout Oklahoma--YOU ROCK! I was very proud to detail Oklahoma’s significant accomplishments at the NCOM Convention which took place May 6-9 in Orlando, FL. Almost two thousand motorcyclists and trikers from all over the country and overseas attended, and the seminars, presentations and other activities were educational and informative. Folks from other areas were very impressed with our Riding Community’s activism, effectiveness, and constantly improving Quality of Life. ! With the onset of Summer Riding Season, we entered the 101 Critical Days of Summer on May 31, and the period will last until Labor Day. This time of year is identified by safety agencies as the period folks are most vulnerable to, among other problems, vehicle accidents, injuries and deaths. Festive Bike Nights are taking place at different locations virtually every night of the week, and are excellent opportunities to catch up with old friends, make new ones, and see what kind of amazing hardware folks are riding in the Sooner State and elsewhere. ABATE constantly emphasizes its support and defense of Riding Freedom, particularly the Freedom to Choose in various aspects of our lifestyle, but that Freedom always has to be accompanied by personal responsibility. Our 2010 Legislative successes will only be truly effective if ALL motorists (including ourselves) use the streets and highways aware of others and Share the Road and that ALL motorcyclists ride safely, responsibly, and sober! I know the Biker Stereotypes, both positive and negative, have been drummed into our heads since we were kids, but the sad fact remains that a majority of bike wrecks, particularly single vehicle ones, involve the use of alcohol. Ultimately, each of us is responsible for our own decisions, but if you drink and ride, you put yourself at increased risk for death and injury, as well as causing pain to your friends and loved ones and providing ammunition to enemies of Biker Liberty, who just love to negatively paint our Riding Community with a broad brush. We want to hear from you, not about you! As I wrap this up, I want to deeply thank all of our proud American Patriots who attended the Operation Carry the Flame Across America event, and ABATE’s annual Memorial Day Bike Parade to the State Capitol. With all the hot-button news topics out there, it can be easy to forget that we have thousands of men and women in our Armed Forces placing themselves in harm’s way to safeguard our Freedom worldwide. We must never forget the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces, and the Motorcycling Community continues to lead the charge in reminding folks to keep supporting our Military and our Veterans. The Oklahoma Confederation of Clubs, on the heels of establishing its successful Strategic Alliance Program, is planning to found a Veterans’ Contingency to help Biker Veterans with their problems. I’ll provide a recap of how the ABATE War Memorial Run went in the July issue. Enjoy the nicer weather as we Spring into Summer, and check out and take part in the numerous fun events our ABATE Chapters are hosting. You can keep updated by going to our everimproving State Website at www.abateofoklahoma.org . As we get ready to celebrate American Freedom with family and friends on the Fourth of July, be sure to translate the culture of more effective and enjoyable Motorcycling into every ride throughout the year, and not just during Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month. See you on the Road! Yours in Liberty, Tiger Mike Revere Lifetime Member #001, ABATE of Oklahoma, Inc. President ABATE Central OK District
Allergies? Kevin G. Charleville Have you ever sneezed while riding? Most of us, if not all of us, have. Spring time allergies affect thousands of individuals every season. Some are more prone than others and do suffer miserably. It also seems that the older we get, the more we notice the uncomfortable symptoms of seasonal allergies. Of course, many of us suffer from other allergies as well. Things such as pet dander, mold, house dust, cigarette/cigar smoke, and so on. My own Father is allergic to some alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine. Some symptoms of seasonal allergies are, (And I need not mention this to those who suffer) headaches, especially the frontal section, nasal drainage, sinus pressure, tearing of the eyes, dry throat and mouth, tiredness, weakness, mild sore throat, and even mild flu like symptoms in severe cases. Springtime seems to be the worst for most, due to all that lovely pollen flying around in the air, and if you are riding and enjoying the beautiful spring temps and scenes, you are most likely sucking it right in your respiratory system. Of course, if you are like me, you are going to suffer the consequences to get in a good ride. There are some measures you can take to minimize or relieve the affects. One way is just not go out in it, yeah right! You can wear a paper respirator or cover your mouth and nose with a bandana. There are also many over the counter and prescription meds you can take to relieve those nasty symptoms. There are many on the market and they basically all have the same warnings and side effects. I am not going to suggest any that is better than the other, you must talk to your personal doc and he will help figure out which one works best for you. There are several categories of meds to choose from, Oral Antihistamines (taken by mouth), Nasal Antihistamines, Decongestants (oral and nasal), Nasal Sprays nonsteroid types and Nasal Sprays steroid types. Like mentioned above, they all work well, however, most all of them share one motorcycle riding negative side effect, Drowsiness. Some parts of the country and other parts of the world, do not share the severity of seasonal allergens as we do here in the Mid-West. However, that does not mean that you cannot suffer from other types of allergies as mentioned above. If you think you may be suffering from some type of allergies, and then, by all means, see your personal doc. If he can suggest or prescribe something that will make your ride that much more enjoyable, who would not want that? After a long cold winter, nice weather is finally here. Ride safe, ride free, and please take care of the children.
Your Monthly Nostra-DumbAss Ok, it’s June and at some point The Four Horsemen are going to Laconia. I hope those yanks are ready for us. If we don’t make it back, tell my wife I love her. Just kidding folks. I think we’ll do just fine. May was great with the New Orleans Bike Week and folks let me tell you, Naw’lins knows how to party. Well here we are and so much going on I don’t know where to start. I think I’ll go with this one. I’m sure by now all of you have heard about the new Arizona Immigration law. And by now you’ve heard of the terrible out-rage of a long list of illegals who deserve to be here in this country, and how unconstitutional Arizona is,blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda,,,,. Ok I’m gonna just put this out here and I’ll take the heat forsaying it cause I can defend what I say. If your here illegally without proper paperwork and snuck over the border regardless where you came from GO BACK! Why did Arizona need to make a law to make illegal people illegal??? I’m lost on this?? How does that make any sense whatsoever. Now let’s just go beyond dumbass on this one. According to a recent story on kpoh.com, Los Angles has just become the largest city to boycott Arizona for their new law. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Yeah learn from LA. That’s A good idea then if you guys in Arizona need money you could just borrow Some from them, Oh wait no you can’t THEIR BROKE! If you are here illegally you have no constitutional rights you’re a criminal. I know it’s sad, I’m sorry. You can’t get whatever done to be here legally, but there are a long line of people just like you who have fought tooth and nail, scrimped and saved and busted their ass, learned English, and are proud to the point of tears to be able to call themselves AMERICANS! Sorry folks I know this is two months in a row on the same subject but sometimes you just gotta scratch you head and wonder, where the hell are we going and how the hell did we get in this basket? I’m Just Sayin, The Resident S.O.B. I can’t thank you fine folks enough for your kind letters and comments every time we meet. I thank you all for listening to the radio show B.A.C.A. My First Day On A Bike Story By: Prolific jay@prolificage.com I have had the fortunate opportunity to work with and promote Motorcycle Events for the past couple of years. I have watched all the Bikers, having all the fun, riding long, and enjoying that “unique” right of passage, that comes with riding. All at the same time, getting in a cage and riding away. I have heard at least “1001”times “Slick, when you going to get a scoot?”I have owned a pair of “Harley boots ‘since I was a teenager. I grew up around people who ride, always had “Biker” Friends. My attorney is a biker, my clients own bike shops, leather stores, biker bars. So now I say, I am tired of putting it off. Although I will most likely never fit the mold of a “True Biker”, I am throwing my hand in at riding as a “Motorcycle Enthusiast”. My first step for transformation: Learning HOW to Ride. OSU/OKC Basic Rider Course- I have to commend greatly the Staff and Faculty of OSU/OKC on their excellent presentation of the basics of riding. Other than getting up at 530am on a Saturday to be at a class at 7am, I have no complaints. Ron, Red, and the rest of the instructors really make their class’s feel at ease, during what can be a rather intimidating thing for new riders. Most of the people in my class had experienced little to no riding. By then end of session one, you could literally see the confidence building in these students. At 8 am we are practicing squeezing the brakes, and walking the bike (Bike not running). After lunch we were zooming, stopping, looking, breaking, shifting, strutting, crossing, bending, rolling, all while keeping “our head up”. The class work was very interesting, informative, and easy to comprehend. Ron splits up the curriculum in groups which made the class wiz through a 150+ quiz. I learned so much information about the safety performance and precautions of riding. I have to say, as a non experienced new rider, I highly recommend taking this course to ANYONE interested riding a motorcycle. Besides the Beginners course they also offer an Experienced RiderCourse(SM). In June they are rolling out a more advanced version beyond the Experience Riders Course. “Ready To Ride” will cover street survival at high speeds, and will utilize OSU/OKC’s private two lane road, for a real experience! If you want in you better hurry! The demand for these classes usually keeps them full, and a few weeks out. Although the chance to learn from this excellent staff of instructors is well worth any wait. I would like to personally thank Ron Peirce, Red Rawlings , and Ruth Ann for the opportunity to take part in the course. If you would like more information about OSU/OKC Basic Rider Course(sm) , Experienced RiderCourse(SM), or “Ready to Ride” contact OSU/OKC Center for Safety and Emergency Preparedness www.osuokc.edu/csep 405-945-3208

Boz Hogz Ride For Angels BY: “T” I got an opportunity back in April to ride with Brian Bosworth in the Thunder Run. At that run, he and his events manager, Shawn, asked me to ride with them in the Boz Hogz Ride For Angels. “The Boz”, Brian Bosworth, previous OU Football legend, Seattle Seahawks player and leading role in the movie Stone Cold had created a 1500 mile ride to raise funds for Children’s Hospital Foundation. He made a ride from Los Angeles, CA to Oklahoma City, OK in 24 hours. Two other men made the entire 1500 miles with him while 4 others joined along the way. Approximately 20 of us met him in Clinton, while about 50 more joined up along the way at a casino stop. The ride was completed at the Thunder Roadhouse Café and Thundercycle in North OKC before parading down to the Boz Hogz Rally in Bricktown, Downtown, OKC. It was a beautiful evening and all enjoyed the great bands and hearing the accounts of the riders who expressed over and over, “It’s all about the kids.” We got to ride and meet Ryan Merriman an actor out of Oklahoma who is quickly gaining success in LA. He enjoyed his ride, but couldn’t believe the riding conditions that the wind of the Oklahoma plains produces. Thank you Boz and Shawn for inviting Thunder Roads Magazine to be a part of your first annual ride!

News Bytes MOTORCYCLIST FATALITIES INEXPLICABLY PLUMMET Following more than a decade of steady increases, motorcycle rider fatalities unaccountably dipped by double-digit proportions last year. Motorcyclist deaths dropped by 16% nationwide through the first three quarters of 2009, compared to the same period in 2008 when fatalities reached their highest level of 5,290. The study -- sponsored by the Governors Highway Safety Association, which represents state traffic safety agencies -- is drawn from preliminary fatality data from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. While there is nothing in the data to indicate the cause of the sudden decline, the GHSA asked state safety agencies to speculate on reasons for the decline, and several respondents pointed to the economy and underscored that a significant portion of motorcycling is for recreation rather than transportation. Other reasons cited in the study for the decline: Fewer beginning motorcyclists; an increase in priority given to state motorcycle safety programs; an increased awareness of motorcycles by other drivers; and colder, wetter weather in some states during the riding season. It doesn’t appear helmet laws played a significant role in the decline. The popularity of motorcycles has surged in the past decade, particularly among aging baby boomers and women, nearly doubling to more than 10 million. During the nine-month period of the comparison, the District and 38 states reported a drop in motorcycle deaths, and 12 states recorded an increase. California had 133 fewer deaths, Florida had 111 fewer and Ohio had 48 fewer. Only two states -- Hawaii and Rhode Island -- had double-digit increases. Once numbers for the final three months of 2009 are factored in, the report projects, the annual fatality decline will be at least 10%. AGING RIDERS AT HIGHER RISK Motorcycle riders across the country are growing older, and the impact of this trend is evident in emergency rooms nationwide as doctors are finding that senior citizens who ride motorcycles are more likely to be involved in accidents and also more likely to be injured or die than their younger counterparts. Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center found that half of all motorcyclists needing emergency treatment in 2005 were over 40, nearly double the number in 1996, which is consistent with demographic data indicating that the average age of motorcycle ownership has rose from 33 years in 1998 to 40 years in 2003. Injury severity, length of stay in the hospital or intensive care unit, and mortality were higher for riders over the age of 40. In the study, which was published in the March issue of the American Surgeon, researchers using the National Trauma Databank reviewed the records of 61,689 motorcyclists aged 17 to 89 years involved in a motorcycle crash between 1996 and 2005. Those ages 50-59 were the fastest growing group involved with crashes, and accidents involving riders in that age group were almost twice as likely to be fatal as those involving younger bikers. “Treating a 60-year-old who has been in a motorcycle accident is very different from treating a 21-year-old who has been in a similar accident -- 60-year-olds bring a lot more medical baggage with them and impact outcomes,” Dr. Mark Gestring, director of the trauma program at the Medical Center. Age-related factors associated with aging, such as impaired vision, delayed reaction time, and altered balance contribute to Thunder Roads Magazine 28

motorcycle crashes in this population. The increase in injury severity for older riders may be related to the reduced capacity to withstand injury as the body ages, including decreases in bone strength and brain size, as well as pre-existing medical conditions. NATURALISTIC MOTORCYCLE SAFETY STUDY The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) has announced that it will partner with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) on the world’s first motorcycle safety study that will use small video recorders and instrumentation mounted on numerous bikes for 6-18 months to gather data about the riders and events that occur. Termed a “naturalistic” study, VTTI has developed this technology and used it successfully to conduct a 100-car study in 2005 that included 69 crashes and more than 750 near-crashes. According to the MSF, “The method is presently in use by researchers across the globe to target nearly every type of roadway user, with the exception of two-wheeled vehicles. This study, expected to be on the road by early 2011, will greatly advance the understanding of interactions among rider, motorcycle, roadway, other roadway users and the environment.” VTTI Director Tom Dingus added that “We expect the study to be very valuable to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s work, since we also will examine where and how crash avoidance is successful. With so much information bandwidth coming from the cameras and instrumentation on each bike, we’ll be able to examine details for years, and the findings will be relevant for decades.” Naturalistic Method identifies crashes using time-series video and numeric data, reveals factors not detectable through crash investigation, creates its own controls by comparing the crash-involved rider to himself/herself at all other times, and permits quantification of rider performance and behavior in noncritical and critical riding situations. PATRIOT GUARD RIDERS BARRED FROM MINERS MEMORIAL Many of the 29 West Virginia coal miners who died at the Upper Big Branch mining explosion on April 5th were veterans and some rode motorcycles, so bereaved families had requested the Patriot Guard Riders to attend the memorial service. PGR is an informal group of motorcyclists which exists to make sure that all veterans are given respectful funerals. But they were barred from attending this service by federal officials who labeled them a security threat. The appearance of the Patriot Guard Riders at the service, at the request of several families, had been cleared in advance by West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, who is also a motorcycle rider. But the day before the service, Joe Cumblidge, the West Virginia State Captain of the Patriot Guard Riders e-mailed the men who were scheduled to participate: “Due to circumstances totally and completely beyond the control of the Patriot Guard Riders and Governor Joe Manchin of West Virginia, we are regrettably ordering a STAND DOWN for this mission. Specific details will not be posted here but, we’ve been told we are not welcome to participate because of certain high-level dignitaries that are scheduled to be in attendance.” The “high-level dignitaries” were President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. A Patriot Guard Rider told WSAZ in Charleston that Manchin had been forbidden to allow them to participate “because of overwhelm-
ing security concerns with high-ranking federal officials -- it was just not logistically possible for them to be a part of the event.” Both Obama and Biden managed to escape West Virginia unharmed.

But The Event Doesn’t
Story by: “T” Pics by: Brandon “Maverick” Rick Horton is a man on a mission. His mission is to raise as much money as possible for cancer research. As many of you know, Rick lost his mother, who was an avid biker, several years ago to cancer. A week after her death, Rick and some family members rode off into the sunset. Aimless as to where they were headed, they did know how patiently they were about how much cancer sucks. The term was used over and over as they rode along the road. When they hit Florida, still chanting Cancer Sucks, they realized it would be best to turn around, go back home and start a foundation to raise funds to research what on earth causes cancer. We recently attended the Cancer Sucks Event in Tulsa, OK. It was very successful from the poker run, to the bands, to the newest addition-the Chili Cookoff. It was well attended and everyone seemed to have a good time. The Boz attended to promote his Boz Hogz Ride For Angels fundraiser as well. The bike show and car show had some beauties to see and many trophies were awarded. The winner of the car show turned right around and gave his $1000 grand prize back to the Cancer Sucks Foundation. The crowd went wild! Generosity seemed to abound during a beautiful sunny day in May. You’re your calendars for this event and more coming from Cancer Sucks. See their website at www.cancersucks.com. Reprinted with permission by AMSOIL Degraded fuel presents a major maintenance issue in small engines and powersports equipment. It can form varnish, gum and insoluble debris that clog carburetors, fuel injectors and fuel filters, and carbon buildup can form on the tops of pistons that leads to pre-ignition, rough idling and poor throttle response. Fuel-related problems are only expected to intensify in the coming years as the ethanol content in pump gasoline continues to increase. New AMSOIL Quickshot SE (AQS) is a premium fuel additive formulated to thoroughly clean and restore peak performance in small engine and powersports equipment fuel systems. It also stabilizes fuel between uses and during short-term storage periods. Its revolutionary technology focuses on three major fuel-related issues plaguing small engines and powersports equipment: ethanol, water and dirty pump gas. Ethanol Ethanol in fuel has a tendency to absorb water and separate from the gasoline, sinking to the bottom of the gas tank, where it quickly degrades and creates gum, varnish, and other insoluble debris that can plug fuel flow passages and negatively affect engine performance. When this ethanol/water mixture is pulled into the engine, it creates a lean burn situation that increase combustion chamber temperatures and can lead to engine damage. AMSOIL Quickshot SE is designed to keep water dispersed through the fuel tank, moving it out as a normal part of operation and decreasing the chance of ethanol separating from the gasoline. Quickshot SE was tested in fuel containing 10 percent ethanol. Controlled plugging of injectors showed a 70 percent flow improvement, while oxidation stability improved 44 percent over untreated fuel. Water Water finds its way into gas tanks through condensation in tanks open to the atmosphere, gas pumps and other environmental conditions, and if left untreated, will cause a myriad of starting, performance and corrosion problems. By keeping water dispersed in tiny molecules and safely moving it out of the tank through the combustion chamber, Quickshot SE helps maintain engine performance and protects against damaging corrosion. Dirty Gasoline Dirty gasoline causes fuel system gumming and varnish, as well as piston and combustion chamber deposits. Although all gasoline sold in the U.S. is formulated with a lowest additive concentration (LAC) level of detergent additives, these detergent levels are not enough to prevent deposits from building up on critical fuel system components. Quickshot SE contains unique chemistry that quickly detaches and carries away deposits and buildups in fuel systems, injectors and carburetors, while also cleaning hard-to-remove deposits on piston tops, spark plugs and other combustion chamber parts. Applications Quickshot SE is recommended for use in all two and four-stroke gasolinepowered engines, including motorcycles, snowmobiles, boats, personal watercraft, ATVs, edgers, tillers, mowers, snowblowers, chainsaws, generators and farm and construction equipment. P.i. Performance Improver remains the superior choice for passenger vehicle applications. Recommendations Quickshot SE is designed for an initial clean-up dose of 8 oz. per 6 gallons of gasoline, followed by 8 oz. per 12 gallons thereafter. VISIT AMSOIL OIL DEPOT, 108 NW 122nd St, OKC, OK. 405-627-7292, for all of your AMSOIL supplies. We carry AMSOIL products including Quickshot SE as mentioned in this article.
A gynecologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO paperwork, and was burned out. Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to become a mechanic. He went to the local technical college, signed up for evening classes, attended diligently, and learned all he could. When the time of the practical exam approached, the gynecologist prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of 150%. Fearing an error, he called the Instructor, saying, “I don’t want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wonder if there is an error in the grade?” “The instructor said, “During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark.” After a pause, the instructor added, “I gave you an extra 50% because you did it all through the muffler, which I’ve never seen done in my entire career”. A little old lady from Wisconsin had worked in and around her family dairy farm since she was old enough to walk, with hours of hard work and little compensation. When canned Carnation Milk became available in grocery stores in approximately the 1940s, she read an advertisement offering $5,000 for the best slogan. The producers wanted a rhyme beginning with ‘Carnation Milk’ is best of all. She thought to herself, I know all about milk and dairy farms, I can do this! She sent in her entry, and several weeks later, a black limo pulled up in front of her house. A man got out and said, ‘Carnation LOVED your entry so much, we are here to award you $2,500. even though we will not be able to print it, it was a purely genius marketing slogan”. “Carnation milk is best of all, no tits to pull, no hay to haul, no buckets to wash, no shit to pitch, just poke a hole in the little son-of-a-bitch.” A 3-year-old boy examined his testicles while taking a bath. ‘Mom’, he asked, ‘Are these my brains?’ She quietly replied, ‘Not yet!’ Business Slogan of The Year: If our service is not up to your standards - Please lower your standards.

A woman and a man are involved in a car accident on a snowy, cold Monday morning; it’s a bad one. Both of their cars are totally demolished, but amazingly neither of them is hurt. God works in mysterious ways. After they crawl out of their cars, the man is yelling about women drivers. The woman says, ‘So, you’re a man. That’s interesting. I’m a woman. Wow, just look at our cars! There’s nothing left, but we’re unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should be friends and live in peace for the rest of our days.’ Flattered, the man replies, ‘Oh yes, I agree completely, this must be a sign from God! But you’re still at fault...women shouldn’t be allowed to drive.’ The woman continues, ‘And look at this, here’s another miracle. My car is completely demolished but this bottle of wine didn’t break. Surely God wants us to drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune. She hands the bottle to the man. The man nods his head in agreement, opens it and drinks half the bottle and then hands it back to the woman. The woman takes the bottle, puts the cap back on and hands it back to the man. The man asks, ‘Aren’t you having any?’ The woman replies, ‘No. I think I’ll just wait for the police...’ Celibacy can be a choice in life, or a condition imposed by unforeseen circumstances. While attending a Marriage Weekend, my wife and I listened to the instructor declare, ‘It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other..” He then addressed the men, ‘Can you name and describe your wife’s favorite flower?’ I leaned over, touched my wife gently, and whispered, ‘Gold Medal-All-Purpose, isn’t it?’ And thus began my life of celibacy.... Two young boys; R.J. and M.B. walked into a pharmacy one day, picked out a box of tampons and proceeded to the checkout counter. Mr. Empson, the owner & Pharmacist, asked the older boy, “Son, how old are you?” “Eight,” R.J. proudly replied. Mr. Empson continued, “Do you know what these are used for?” R.J. replied, “not exactly, but they aren’t for me. They’re for him. He’s my brother, M.B., he’s four. We saw on TV that if you use these you would be able to swim and ride a bike. Right now, he can’t do either one.”

CHRISTIAN MOTORCYCLISTS ASSOCIATION If I may, I would like to examine two cross-roads. One cross-road is the one our nation is at. The United States of America is not the same one I grew up in, nor is it the one our Forefathers envisioned. We, as Christians, have sat idly by and watched and listened as our freedoms have been slowly erased. They weren’t taken from us because we haven’t even put up a fight. Like it or not, we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg. Our nation is sliding down a very steep and slippery slope towards ruin. However, all is not lost. None of this is a surprise to God. His Master Plan is still being carried out. There is still hope for our great land. God’s Word says in Second Chronicles, chapter 7, beginning in verse 14; “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. I hope that you care enough to take a moment and read this prayer, or pray your own, for our country and it’s leaders. Heavenly Father, we are a prideful and sinful people. We believe that we can fix anything and everything. Too often as a last resort, we realize that our only hope is to turn to you. We do so right now. Father, in Jesus name, we ask that you forgive us of our sins, and help us to turn back to you. We desperately need your intervention in our country today. We have a great need for Christian’s to be willing to stand up for what we believe in, and not allow our Religious freedoms to be swept under the rug of politics like so much dust. We need the focus of all Americans to be on You, and not on ourselves. Father, I pray, that starting right now, you are not only hearing our prayer, but your already at work setting us on the right path. I claim this in Jesus name. Amen. The second cross-road I would like to look at is the one where a lot of people are standing today. Possibly, some
of you reading this may be there. There is a road that leads to life, and one that leads to death. The one that leads to life is narrow and sometimes hard, but at the journey’s end, the reward is an eternity with Jesus. The one that leads to death is wide, well lit, and most of the time, very appealing, but if you look closely, you may be able to see some of the pitfalls that will lead to an eternity separated from Jesus. The Scriptures give very vivid descriptions of both places. I believe with all my heart that we are fast approaching the second coming of Christ. For those standing at that particular cross-road, it is time to make a decision. Go right on the narrow road, or go left on the broad road. The choice is yours. Where you spend eternity is up to you. You may be saying to yourself “What’s the hurry? Why today? The Bible very clearly states “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” I believe His patience is wearing thin. If you haven’t made that decision in your life yet, my prayer is that you will do so today. Right now. If you have never prayed the prayer of salvation and asked Jesus into your heart, right where your at, simply talk to God and repeat this prayer. Heavenly Father, I confess with my mouth that I am a sinner. Your word says so. Your word also says that if I will confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in my heart that You raised Him from the dead, that I will be saved. I call upon the name of the Lord to save me. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. If you prayed that prayer, I am going to ask you to do something. I am going to ask you to tell someone about the decision that you made today. That will confirm that you meant business with God. Until next time, don’t ride so fast that your Guardian Angel can’t keep up.

Women’s Ride Day Was A Big Hit With Tulsa Area Lady Riders
but I was still able to kick it and then it attacked my other leg. I fell on the ground and scratched up my back and my tattoos cause I wasn’t wearing a shirt and my back is covered in tattoos.” As the other ladies sat in quiet amazement to the story we’d just been presented, I had to ask. So how’s the coon hound? To which I learned was fine. Only in Tahlequah folks! So, we escaped Evil’s story telling and we climbed back on our rides. Everyone was given the option to ride on to the Illinois River a few miles NorthEast of Tahlequah or go back the route we originally traveled. Surprisingly, everyone continued on to tackle the exciting twisty, turning lines of Highway 10 North. The ride was beautiful as we traveled thru the smells of the honeysuckle blooming along the roadside. The brilliant green colors of the freshly bloomed tree leaves and new grass in the meadows lit up as the sun began to shine overhead. Some of us blazed the fun turns while others kept it slower and safe and enjoyed the ride at their own pace. We finished the ride off by returning on scenic and historic Highway 412. Another beautiful, easy Oklahoma ride route. There’s several small towns to pass thru and some easy gliding turns as well. We wrapped up the 200 mile trip a bit scattered by the traffic coming into Tulsa, but all made it home safely. Myers’ Duren treated everyone to a big welcome home with a large number of giveaways including a beautiful leather jacket! Thank you to them for teaming with us to make this annual women’s event one of the first in Oklahoma and we are planning on doing it again next year if not sooner. It was very successful and fun as we could have ever wanted!
Melissa followed behind as the sweep. Fortunately for us all, Crystal is a past motorcycle police woman so we had a built in escort at a few of the more dangerous intersections, OK. It’s time to move over fellas! The women made a etc. Getting in and out of Tulsa was the most tedious areas blast thru several parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas in May. to travel. Other than that, it was smooth sailing. May was the celebration of women riders. And, boy did Once in Tahlequah, we lined the streets in front of Sam they ride! and Ella’s, our lunch destination. YUMMY! Let me tell you. There really isn’t a much better way “Ooo La La”, than a If you’ve not eaten at this ride destination, you are missing pack of 35 women rolling down the highway on hot metal out. Their pizza and atmosphere are wonderful. I know and chrome. Smokin! That’s exactly what on-lookers they have sandwiches too, which many enjoyed, but I can caught as the pack gathered at Myers-Duren Harley Danever pass up their thick and hardy pizza. They were very vidson in Tulsa for the 2nd annual Women’s Ride Day. Teaming with Thunder Roads Magazine, we had ourselves accommodating to the large group as we had made a call ahead to warn them. The funniest thing happened while we a great event this year. Last year we were drenched out were there. Several of us chose to sit up at the long counter by flash flood rains, but this year, with clouds looming, we at the front of the place. As we sat, a man passed by and I pulled out of the dealership headed to Tahlequah. It was asked, “How are you?” He whipped around and said, “Evil”. a wonderful trip that took us through some of the prettiest areas of Oklahoma. “OK”, I say. “Besides that how are you?” He then proceeds For many of the women, it was their first opportunity to into this story that had half of us stunned and the other half ride with a group. All were reassured that they could do this dieing laughing. It went something like this….He said, “My by Crystal, Myers-Duren’s very own certified ride instructor. knee is hurt. I was in my yard last night, playing my fiddle, Crystal briefly covered hand signals and protocol for group when this mean dog came in my yard and attacked my coon riding with everyone prior to leaving. KEEP IT SIMPLE SHEPHERD’S PIE original recipe by: Toni McCoy 1-1/2 lbs ground round beef (not ground Chuck, ground Round) 1 onion chopped in large chop (or get pre-chopped onion @ store) 1 Bag of Frozen Mixed Veggies; Thawed 1 Box of Instant Mashed Potatoes; *IDAHO SPUDS brand 1 Tub of Sour Cream 1 Stick of Butter; Divided, or I.C.B.I.N.B. (I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter) Margarine 1/2 cup Beef Broth 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce 1 Bag of Finely Shredded Cheddar Cheese Salt & Pepper to Taste Make the instant mashed potatoes first. Go ahead and use a large stock pot and make the entire box. Be sure and add ½ stick of butter (or 2 heaping Tablespoons of ICBINB) to potatoes, add tub of sour cream & salt & pepper to taste. Next, take ¼ pat of butter or 1 Tablespoon of ICBINB to first saute’ your onion in skillet and once onion is done and skillet is hot, move onions off to side & go ahead and drop your ground beef in. Don’t move it around. Let it start cooking then break it up into larger chunks with wooden spoon. Salt & Pepper to taste. Add Garlic Powder if want & dash of Nutmeg. Again, you want the meat to carmelize and get good and browned. You don’t really have to drain it as Ground Round renders hardly any grease, but if you want, drain, then return to skillet, add Tablespoon of Worsteshire Sauce, ½ cup Beef Broth and Bag of Frozen Veggies. Spray a 9x13 glass baking dish with cooking spray. Layer just a 1/4 inch high of mashed potatoes as your starter layer, then use all your ground round beef mixture as your full second layer. Next, layer your Cheddar cheese thuroughly on top of beef layer, then layer your mashed potatoes up on top and take a fork and dab at the potatoes to form little peaks that will brown off as it bakes. Cook in 400 degree oven until bubbling and brown (about 30 minutes). Delicious! Bake up some super crusty, hot French bread & serve w/ honey butter.

Fundady’s Party Weekend BY: Hondo Once again, if you weren’t at Fundady’s Fifth Anniversary you weren’t having fun! Fundady’s was full of fun loving people. Then there was Fast Eddie on the mic. He can really rouse a crowd. Fast Eddie is quick, witty and downright nasty with a capital “N”. During the bike games, Cindy bit that weenie like it had never been bit before and there were Kevin with his barrel toss that taking first place honors and Bonnie winning the toss for the ladies. The oil wrestling was my favorite. I wanted to participate but my Seatcover reminded me I didn’t have a change of clothes. C.J., Teresa and Shaun for the ladies, took on Adam “Funboy” and Bear tried defending the men’s honor. As you guessed, the ladies won hands down (or was it boxers down) Whoaaa! Later on Cheryl won the pickle licking contest for the 5th year in a row. The rumor is going around that she is going to retire. There were some great vendors there, P.J. and her Honker Eats of all kinds, Fred with his pens and patches and tattoo and air brush Jim slinging ink and putting flames on Fundaddy’s head. There was Mozal Carns “Mo” with her dew rags and a quilt made of Royal Crown socks, and all kinds of things she has sewn up. All of Mo’s profits go to Habitat for Humanity. On April 18th of this year, Laura Miller passed away in a tragic car wreck. She was a greatly loved member of the Fundady Family. Our prayers go out to her family and friends. And in closing, I would be in deep doo-do if I didn’t mention that it was also mine and “Seatcovers” 29th Wedding Anniversary. Be Safe, Hondo

5 State Run 2010 The cool breath of Mother Nature was overtaken by a rebel yell of over 1100 bikers on 910 motorcycles. May 8th 2010, Guymon, OK 8th Annual 5 State Run, riders from as far away as Richmond Virginia and other states like Kansas, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and even Iowa gathered to help a 14 member club help their community. The Iron Thunder Motorcycle Club, whose President Nancy Davis inspired the 300 mile ride 8 years ago, have been raising money to help numerous organizations in and around their community since 2002. Riders and volunteers alike all have a story to tell, Like “The Riffel’s” who have volunteered for the Colorado punch stop for 6 of the 8 years. We love it out here, they said wrapped in their riding gear, no matter what the weather it’s always beautiful. Or, how about Philip Tugmon and his girlfriend Mari, both 16 years old rode his Honda Rebel 250 from Locust Grove to Guymon, 373 miles, on Friday then rode the 300 mile poker run and plan to ride back home on Sunday. Mari who was on her 1st poker run and Philip’s girlfriend for 3 months said “My Butt Hurts” when asked about the ride. I can only imagine after seeing her 5 inch by 6 inch seat. Then the CMA Riders who volunteer every year, they spent most of the morning blessing bikes for those that asked. Or the Liberal KS HOG group who was there to lend helping hands at punch stops and other places they were asked to fill in. KKBS, a local radio station provided the sound system for the event. And not to forget the Lions Club helping with other activities that needed to be done and the Victory Memorial United Methodist Church youth that helped with clean-up. Iron Thunder club members worked in pre-registration greeting the 500 people who registered early. Then others worked the on site registration to help the 600+ who signed up the day of the ride. Don’t forget the patch and T-shirt booth that was busy most of the day also. With riders rebel yelling at Mother Nature as young as 6 and as old as 83 getting recognized with awards, and $472 won in the 50/50 drawing. That’s not counting the poker hands like a king high flush that Barbara from OKC had for 3rd place, winning $500.00 .Now Donna from Perry with a full house just knew she was in 1st place, Jacks over 10’s then they called her name for 2nd place and won $1500.00. Will of OKC won 1st place took his winnings of $3000.00 with a Aces over 7’s full house. Yes Mother Nature tried to blow cold on the ride, but the rebels that we are would not give in, so next time you go for a ride give yourself and Mother Nature a Muffler check!!! “Keep The Chrome Up” Chip Ross

OKC Bike Night Highlights By: Thumper As most bikers know, the bike night is becoming a rather unique thing at places that weren’t known to have a lot to do with biker parties in the past. They have now become a focal point of the biker scene. The other night, I drug my old butt out to Fort Thunder to enjoy their bike night. Well, I would have never thunk that Harley-Davidson would loosen up enough to have one of the really great bike nights around. But they’ve done it! Upon arriving, there was a big tent under which was a lot of chairs and the Louie’s girls selling beer. (Can you believe that?) Plus, the band was playing, the food truck serving and many employees of Fort Thunder were there to help, sell or direct you. It was great. After a while of fun there, I jumped over to the Hooter and Old Chicago bike night and there was just as much going on there. They had bands, girls and lots of bikes. All of the people I saw and talked to were really enjoying themselves and at all the places you will see the people that you see in our magazine. Now, keep in mind, you don’t have to limit yourself to just Thursdays for bike night. Every week night a bike night is somewhere (if you don’t know where, look in this mag and our advertisers will tell you where.) Thru the years, I’ve learned that times change and one of the best changes are the bike night. You can go out every night and be partying with all your friends and new ones you can meet there. Besides you can meet up with a girl or a riding buddy that enjoys what you enjoy. So, go catch some good times at a bike night, be careful out there and party on!

Squattie’s Charity Run Friends Caring For Friends By: Thumper There are all sorts of runs, events, poker runs and such out there to donate to or participate in, but never forget the people you have known for years. That doesn’t mean just your best friends, but all your old buddies and friends especially those who are sick or hurt. They can’t really provide for themselves or pay for their medicine right now. Look at ways that you and their support group of friends can help. Personally, I’m a believer in visiting them in hospitals or in this case showing up and buying in on a benefit poker run. For my old friend, Squattie, she has been around the bike scene since before most of today’s riders were riding. So, on the day of the run, a lot of her friends showed up to raise money for one of their “old school” girls. I heard a lot of good stories and reflections that showed how much people cared for her. These are bikers showing the best of themselves, cause in our part of the world, we do care about our friends. I do not think that there is any other group who are doing so much for charities, people and other good causes than us bikers. Look in our events calendar and ads for benefit after benefit you can participate and ride. This was Squatties turn to be on the receiving end on one of these runs. We all know she has made a lot of runs for other people. Even though she couldn’t make the run herself due to her health, it went by her house with pipes roaring saying we’re here for you girl. The money was nice, but her watching everyone come by her house had to be just as good a feeling for her. All I want to get across is to keep giving of yourself as there are others out there that could use the help. Remember be careful out there and party on!

Chris Calaprice is in the fight of his life. He gets up every day and heads off to battle on a Purple Victory Vision. His crusade will take him 42,000 miles, touching all 50 states. The mileage is significant because it represents the number of other Americans who will be unwillingly drafted into the same war that Chris is fighting. More than 30,000 of them will die during their first year of this fight, and only a handful will still be standing in 5 years. Chris himself was drafted more than six years ago when his doctor told him that cancer was attacking his pancreas. “Suddenly I was faced with much of my life being gone, or at least out of reach,” Chris says as he reflects on the adrenaline-soaked life he led before the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Chris was now looking at a new way of life. Chemotherapy would replace his legacy of rock climbing, skydiving, bungee jumping and ocean diving. Then he found motorcycles, and realized it was a way to get back to living again.

“I had some kind of outlet for all of the fear and the angst and the things that were going on with my disease,” he says. “To be able to go out to the garage and fire up the bike even if I’m fairly weak, as long as I can hold the bike up and twist the throttle, I can ride. Even if it’s for an hour or two, or if it’s for all day, I’m in control of that.” Chris is also in control of his pancreatic cancer, thanks to surgeries, powerful chemo treatments every 2 months, and a daily cocktail of drugs that cost more than $5,000 a week. The disease has the highest mortality rate of any cancer, and only lung cancer claims more lives. When Chris and his wife Jennifer found out that pancreatic cancer only receives two percent of the money the National Cancer Institute spends on research, they knew they had to do something. “Someone needs to go outside the box and shake America up a little bit,” is how Chris puts it. Their action came in the form of a nationwide bike ride to raise awareness of the disease, and to help raise money for research. “We came up with the idea that we would go out and do a whistle stop tour.”
know goes out and does some kind of charity ride at least three or four times a year, and most of us do a lot more.” Their run through West Virginia included a stop in Philippi, where Thunder Roads West Virginia caught up with them. This is the 14th state they have traveled through, and plan to hit the remaining 36 by year’s end. Their travels, along with Chris’ chemo treatments, are being documented by photographer Andy Madison, and can be followed on their website at www. road2Acure.org. The Calaprices aren’t just out there trying to raise money. Visits with other pancreatic cancer patients are also a big part of what they do. For a disease that claims most of its victims within a year of diagnosis, Chris offers hope. “When people see Chris, a survivor for six and a half years, it changes their world,” says Jennifer. “We thought it would affect people. But we’ve since heard from people, ‘Oh, no. There’s not affecting going on. There’s absolute change!’ Chris has been asked if he’s giving false hope, and we’ve talked about it a lot. We don’t think there’s any such thing. Because without hope…you’re dead.”
Exactly how to do the tour came to Chris one sleepless night at their home in Santa Barbara, California. In the morning, he said to Jennifer, “What do you think about renting out our house, moving into an RV and getting on a bike and going to all 50 states? I really expected, ‘Have you lost your damn mind?’ But what I got was, ‘That’s brilliant! Let’s do it!’” With support from Victory Motorcycles, they are doing just that. Their purple 5th wheeler houses them, as well as camera equipment and the bikes when they aren’t riding. They have touched a nerve in the biking community, and Chris places the credit squarely on the shoulders of our kind. “I’ve never met people who gave more and made less than riders,” he says. “Every rider I
“I’ve learned a lot about the quality of life,” reflects Chris as he thinks about his chats with other pancreatic cancer survivors. “It’s the quality of the days that we have. If we have hope, and if we have a positive outlook, it doesn’t matter how many days you’re here. We have a chance to have quality in those days.” He has learned this, Chris says, through his contact with the motorcycle community. “There’s something about the motorcyclist’s spirit,” Chris says. Jennifer jumps in to define that “something” in a single word. “Real,” is how she puts it. “Until Chris started riding the bike, I had never been familiar with bikers. I was in with a room full of bikers and we were educating them and making them aware of pancreatic cancer, and it felt comfortable. It felt like home. It felt real.” The physical prognosis for Chris, he says, is “grim”. He has already beaten the odds by many years but points out, “This game will never be over.” Thanks to the continuous treatments and positive attitude about living life each and every day, his psychological outlook is anything but grim. And don’t count out the effect motorcycling has had on him. “Don’t park the bike in the garage because you have cancer,” he advises. “It’s given me a lot of freedom back,” Chris Calaprice says of riding this nation on a bike. “It’s given me a peace that I don’t get anywhere else.”

The “Turn Sentinel” Not Just Another Safety Item
I recently met a life-long biker that has invented a very unique item. He said it has been over 1 ½ years in the making, but is getting very close to having it on the market. It is a LED lighted turn signal worn over two middle or first fingers and extends to your wrist, wrapping around and fastening with Velcro. It is very easy to use in the first couple of minutes, the button is easy to push and easy to get used to. It is being made entirely in the US of 100% leather and Anthony says as long as he has the ownership, “It will always be made in the US.” The name of the device is the “TURN SENTINEL”. Yeah, I know, when first said everyone says “turn signal” but he has diligently patented, trademarked and purchased the websites to protect his unique invention which “as he puts it is a “Painfully Slow” and “expensive process”. I met Anthony at the Thunder Rally in OKC, although being pulled in many directions, I was able to give him some time as he had a great product, great story and was a pretty unique person. The idea of the turn sentinel is profound in his eyes as it relates to a loss of a friend, Trey, killed 19yrs ago by a “cage” that didn’t see him, but only saw his bike which had tossed him to the street and turned over near the sidewalk. Anthony has often thought maybe he might have been seen if he had one of these on as it stays with the rider and NOT THE BIKE!! Anthony wears a spur in Trey’s honor on his right foot, every time he rides his “iron horse” (the two were rodeo buddies back in the day”. He doesn’t offer or talk much about it but I could tell it was important to him, by the somber and unrehearsed words as he looked down at the spur and the “Sentinel”. “The product”, he said, “has gone Thunder Roads Magazine 68
through many changes and he feels, as I do, he now has a marketable and reliable turn signal for motorcycles, bicycles, runners and many other uses near roads, accidents and parking lots where being “visible” may be the difference between life and death. He also gave me a gold dollar--brand new and shiny--said he has been giving them away to riders for 10yrs now. He started giving them to keep in their wallet, with a small speech. “Keep this and if you are ever broke and out of gas--On a bike this will get you a ways down the road”, and “if you ever use it for that, tell me and I will give you a new one”. He’s an easy fella to remember for many reasons. Although very hesitant he said, while shaking my hand, if I gave my word, not let it out of my hands he would let me have one to use and do a review on, we shook and there I was the only other person in the world to have a “Turn Sentinel” at this stage in the game! I have seen him on one or two occasions and he is always wearing one and just so everyone knows, he rides an Ultra Titan, Ground-Pounder with ZERO turn signals on it, HE BELIEVES IN IT! He said he has been stopped just twice, once to ask where the officer (a rider) could purchase one, and once he told a different officer he was using “legal hand signals” at night (which there is no clause stating day or night) and had to show he knew all three--LOL!!! He is currently trying to get it through DOT as a legal alternative. Anthony has been told “some people won’t know what the signal means”, I can tell you, this product sequences out from wrist to finger tips and is very, very noticeable-both in the daytime and especially at night. There is no doubt what someone’s intentions are with this device and if there is, Anthony said laughing, “QUIT DUMBING DOWN AMERICA!!! Everyone should know the three basic hand signals!” I have only been able to use this device myself for one short ride. However, I could tell that people could see me much easier. I was riding at dusk and during the day. One very
cool thing was that I noticed on left hand turns, fast approaching cars seemed to change lanes and slow down sooner than they normally do. I’m a rearview mirror watcher on those turns so I know it made a difference. I can’t wait to try it out on some of the long rides I am planning this month. I want to hear what others around me feel about it. The Turn Sentinel is beginning production, with promises of a June 10 first delivery!!
