Well, we’re ending our 6th full year of publishing Thunder Roads Texas (TRT)… looking forward to many, many more! We’d like to thank our staff for all the continued support they’ve provided. A special hand goes to our Associate Editor, Randy McCamey and Points Across Texas Administrator, Monica McClaskey for taking so much weight off my shoulders. You two have truly been a God-send! In this final issue of the year, we’ve saved all the Fall rallies and events TRT has covered, sponsored, and/or participated in… so check out the “Thunder Roads Texas Was There!!” article. 14 are covered here, but know that there are even more that we have attended in some fashion – thanks to “Pig” and our new sales folks, Chris Hensley and Chere Laine. These three have attended many other events on behalf of TRT, providing a presence that we’re all proud of! So thanks guys! To our readers, keep sending us your stories and photos. I have some “in waiting” that due to the large fall rally wrap up, will appear in early 2014 issues. We so appreciate your interest in sharing your rides and experiences with other readers across the state… and we know our readers appreciate it as well. And lest we forget... we sincerely thank our advertisers. Being a FREE publication is a balancing act. We must provide a nice mix of content and ads; we must price our ads modestly to attract business, but not so modestly that we go out of business; and we are constantly striving to get our readers to visit our advertisers and proudly announce that they saw the ad in Thunder Roads Texas! Without our advertisers... we simply don’t exist. As we close this year, we send out a “hoot” to everyone – it’ll be a New Year soon. Merry Christmas to everyone… here’s to safe passage during the holidays and all the best wishes for a wonderful New Year! Ride safe... and ride with THUNDER! Great Christmas Gift Idea - a CTEK Battery Charger he holidays are here! Are you looking for a one-of-akind gift for the biker in your life? Are you searching for something that will increase the longevity of the life of the motorcycle and not break the bank? The answer is the CTEK MUS 4.3 Motorcycle Battery Charger. If you don’t use your toy every day… the battery should be charging. If your bike is one of those that is hard to turn over; if your battery is older; if there is a heavy drain on the battery… you need a charger! CTEK manufactures a complete range of new generation, high-quality, reliable battery chargers and accessories for private and professional use. The CTEK chargers are effective, user-friendly and, above all, safe to use. CTEK has become the most trusted name in battery charging, manufacturing, and distributing of both CTEK and OEM branded chargers. A leader in switch mode technology, CTEK is also cutting edge innovation! CTEK MUS 4.3 Motorcycle Battery Charger is marketed as the best battery charger for your motorcycle. Here at Two Wheel Thunder TV, we agree! It is easy to use, cost efficient and it works! While a battery tender, or any “float” charger, can keep a battery topped off, a CTEK battery charger actually charges the battery... and keeps it charged! I checked to make certain that the CTEK chargers are indeed “chargers”, and they are. We were able to bring a motorcycle battery from nearly dead to full charge.

Page 10

H

December 2013

CTEK battery chargers are called “smart” for good reason. They have a memory and when power goes out, it knows what it was doing and will go back to the charging process where it left off. This charger can solve a broad range of battery-related problems and is the perfect charger for those with high demands. The MUS 4.3 offers features such as battery diagnosis that shows if a battery can receive and retain a charge, a special reconditioning function that restores stratified and deeply discharged batteries, a unique maintenance charging function, a mode for optimized charging during cold winter days, and the charging of demanding AGM batteries. The charger also has a battery status indicator (low/full), and settings for motorcycle, car, or gel battery. The charger cycles from trickle current to pulses and shuts off when the battery is full. You can actually follow the entire charging process with its distinctive display. Using a unique charge algorithm, CTEK Smarter Battery Chargers go through eight steps to constantly read and communicate with your battery; charging only to its’ direct needs and therefore avoiding any possibility of incorrectly charging the battery. Furthermore, by ensuring the battery is conditioned as well as charged, it will last significantly longer. Each CTEK Smart Battery Charger regulates main voltage to protect any sensitive electrical and hi-fi equipment.

We think CTEK offers an excellent quality product and is pretty much a plug-it-in and forget about it battery maintainer. We use it to maintain the batteries on the bikes that will sit for months over the winter without being used and it has helped all the batteries stay like new. For those that want the technical details… the MUS 4.3 is a fully automatic 8-step charger that delivers selectable 0.8 A or 4.3 A to 12 V batteries from 1.2–110 Ah and is suitable for maintenance charging up to 160 Ah. CTEK chargers come with a 5-year warranty. CTEK is a proud sponsor of Valerie Thompson, owner/ driver of Valerie Thompson Land Speed Racing. Recently, Two Wheel Thunder TV had the opportunity to interview Valerie during timed trials bidding to beat her record of 212 MPH. She is one of the most determined and successful independent female racers competing today; being a fivetime land speed record holder. She set a personal best top speed and 1000cc Class Record of 212 mph on her BMW S 1000 RR during the March 2013 Texas Mile competition.

Warming Up the Christmas Spirit very merry Christmas to all my fans and lovers of pork and pork by-products. My editor wanted me to make sure and write a Christmas themed article this month. Other than writing to ask Santa for a long legged blonde with fish net stockings, I wasn’t quite sure what to say this year. So, I decided to write about chili. Now, I know you are sitting there asking yourself, “WTF does chili have to do with Christmas”? Well, if you don’t know, then I guess we are gonna’ have to have a sit down with a cold one so I can tell you a little biker Christmas story. Take a good drag off that beer. Ready? Here we go. Let the Glory of the Lord shine above us as it was that time of year again… Bikers, tall and small, even strong and smelly, all packed with pure American spirit gathered for the Region 7, Texas Confederation of Clubs & Independents (COC&I) chili cook-off once again. This annual event kicks off the fundraising for the annual Red Riding Hoodlum Toy Run. As always, the Toy Run benefits the Bair Foundation here in San Antonio. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition because the turn-out was so large it was more like a chili war than a chili cook-off. The Friday night before saw rain coming down; a cold front had blown in threatening the weather for Saturday. Rainman was a little worried but the Power’s above knew how important it would be for a good turn-out, so the winds blew in at dawn and pushed the clouds away, giving us a picture perfect day. It was a day that would have been best spent out riding but our mission was more important than riding our motorcycles. It was more important than drinking beer and partying. (Yes, our mission was that important!) Warriors gathered at the Deer Crossing Saloon in the little town of Selma. Canopies and make-shift campsites were set up everywhere. Propane burners heated up the action as cooks added their secret weapons to their pots of chili. There were 28 entries for the chili war and all there to see who had the best. I’m not really sure how the judges could tell which chili was better than the other as they

were all good except, of course, when it came down to Gunner’s chili. Now, I know that Gunner is a friend of ours as he is also Rainman’s commander in Coalition of Independent Riders (COIR) for Region 7. But I have to say this as a warning to unsuspecting people… this Pig has had a lot of different kinds of chili, some were hot and some were mild but somewhere along the way I think that Gunner lost his mind. He tried to tell us he was going for the hottest chili award even thought there has never been an award for that category. Gunner’s idea of a hot flavored chili means it has the ability to not only strip paint, but to be a parts cleaner/ striper for the Air Force! I overheard one guy describe it to be a new form of napalm. After we were suckered into trying his saucy hot lava, we spent a good part of the afternoon trying to regain feeling and taste in our mouths. When we asked what he used in his chili, he just gave us that same ole cheesy grin of his. Later we found out that he used jalapenos with ghost peppers… and a new pepper that is even hotter than a ghost pepper; the Red Scorpion. The way my butt felt the next day, I do not recommend you use them for anything! I’m here to tell you the camaraderie and unity among the clubs was in full swing that day as people wandered around the grounds trying everyone’s chili. I saw a few other good looking dishes walk by too (babes, not food). For those who didn’t have a desire to partake in chili, two of San Antonio’s top food vendor trucks were brought in for a little change of pace. Hippie Momma’s and The Fridge were on hand to dish out some really killer roach coach grub. Now, if you ever get the chance, I recommend trying the Fried Macaroni from The Fridge. It’s killer! On the other

side, Hippie Momma’s makes some great sandwiches. With everyone’s efforts, between the chili war, the 50/50 drawing, and the live auction, over $4,000 was raised that day. This represents the single largest amount ever for the kick-off party. The goal is to raise over $10,000 by the day of the Red Riding Hoodlum Toy Run, December 14. The Bair Foundation is one of many organizations that help children who are pulled or removed from their homes for their personal protection by placing them in foster care. These are the kids who have abusive relatives and conditions in the home and/or they have a non-conducive home life. But, no matter what the circumstances are, bikers are there to help these children every year to obtain the basic necessary household items they need. The annual Toy Run provides comfort bags filled for the kids – filled with simple stuff they don’t have like their own shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, socks, and underwear. We try to provide them with a book to read or maybe puzzles they can work. They need something to help take their minds off of their troubles and put some happiness back into their lives. The bikers are there to let those children know that somebody in this fucked up world really cares! From all over Texas, bikers will gather together to put on toy runs for their local charities. So, this Christmas season I’m asking you to join in as many toy runs as you can. The need of your assistance is great and the kids deserve a better chance at life. I promise you on Christmas morning when you wake up you will have a smile on your face and a warm place in your heart. A word of warning though, that low rumbling you sometimes hear may not be thunder in the distance, or even motorcycles riding through the hills. It just might be the after effects of Gunner’s chili. And if that is the case, you better run! Merry Christmas Everybody and to all a good night!

Take the Backroads to Yankee's!

RIDE

By Shelly Horan, Owner/Managing Editor Updating the Backwoods to Yankee’s map from December 2009

Cold Beer - Free Advice!

T

his month we redo our December 2009 ride map, rerouting it to go from Houston to Yankee’s Tavern. This is one of our favorite biker bars and destinations, as it is for many riders around the state, and, even beyond! Famous for their “Cold Beer, Free Advice” and their yummy half-pound burger! On a busy weekend, you’ll find Yankee (Mike) in the kitchen cooking. Catch him during a slower time, buy him a beer, and he’ll recount his many riding stories. With more than 500,000 miles in the seat, this Yankee travels back East every year to carouse with old friends. Our map starts in Northwest Houston, at the intersection of Beltway 8 and Highway 249. Taking 249 North, the first stop of interest is Tomball.

Originally named Peck after a civil engineer who was granted a railroad depot and roundhouse. In 1907, the town was renamed to Tomball, for Thomas Henry Ball who brought the railroad to Peck. Primarily agricultural, the town became known as “Oil Town USA” when Humble Oil (among others) came into town to drill within five miles of downtown. Humble purchased their drilling rights by telling the town if they were allowed to drill that “worthless, nasty oil” from Tomball’s city limits, they would provide the citizens with free gas and water for 99 years. The town was actually highlighted in Ripley’s Believe It or Not syndicated column for “being the only city with free gas and water, but no cemetery”. While there, visit the Tomball Museum Center. It’s a collection of various types of buildings from early Tomball, as well as antiques and photos of the area’s heritage. Visit the second Friday and following Saturday in December to take part in the popular Candlelight Tour; complete with homemade wassail, coffee, and cookies. If visiting December 13-

15 this year, you can partake in the Tomball German Christmas Market. More than 175 unique street merchants, along with music, food… and beer!

Next on the map is Pinehurst. Nothing much to see here… a small rural and agricultural town founded in the mid-1860s. Here is where our route picks up FM 1774 (simply continue straight). The next stop of note, with a reason to get off the bike and stretch your legs, is Magnolia. In the 1840s, the town was called Mink’s Prairie. In 1850, the name was shortened to simply Mink. When the railroad came through, the small community moved its town center to the tracks. The railroad wanted to name the town Melton, but the name was too close to Milton in Tyler County. To keep things simple, they simply looked around and noticed all the Magnolia trees in abundance in the area. In Magnolia, we give a shout out to our advertiser, Coppersage Biker Gear, located in the Brookshire shopping center at the corner of FM 1774 and FM 1448. In Magnolia, there is a “jog” in the route, where FM 1774 takes a short jaunt along FM 1488 to cross the railroad tracks before continuing. Continuing on FM 1774, you’ll notice the beautiful treelined, peaceful roads. This is also the stretch where the Texas Renaissance Festival is located. But, it’s over now, so we’ll just continue on up the road, into Plantersville.

Theis House; Tomball Museum Center

Settled during the 1830s with the railroad, by 1860, the area was growing and the town

St Mary’s Catholic Church; Plantersville was officially designated Plantersville. The name was suggested by Mrs. JL Greene to honor the planters who settled the site. The main site to see here is St. Mary’s Catholic Church (just north of Highway 105 on FM 1774). Constructed in 1894 originally and known as Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a primarily German congregation. In 1917, the small building was struck by lightning and burned. The current building was replaced within a year and became a registered Texas Historic Landmark in 2001. This is one of Texas’ “painted churches”, offering stained glass windows depicting its German heritage and an ornately painted interior. For more information about the painted churches in Texas, see our February 2012 ride map, “Painted Churches of Texas”. One last stop up FM 1774… Anderson. This county seat was created with the county, Grimes and named in honor of Kenneth Anderson, the last vice president of the Republic of Texas. While in Anderson, visit the Grimes County Courthouse and if you like ghosts, keep your camera rolling and eyes open. The halls of the courthouse are reported to be haunted. A Houston paranormal team investigated and caught an unexplained shadow on video. Additionally, a court administrator once complained of

doors slamming, the elevator running with no one in it, and other unexplained noises. One can speculate who the ghost is… but keep in mind, Clyde Barrow’s gang (Bonnie & Clyde) was convicted here in the 1930s. Or it could be one of the casualties of the 1899 five-day gun battle; you can still see the bullet holes in exterior walls of the courthouse. Aside from the ghostly noises, the courthouse itself is architecturally interesting. The building was completed in 1894; an Italianate-style, Victorian era building, featuring an ornate stamped tin ceiling and is one of the more interesting Texas courthouses. Anderson was originally named Fanthorp and the Fanthorp Inn still remains as a wonderfully preserved example of a 19th century stagecoach. The 18-room inn was built

Grimes County Courthouse; Anderson

RIDE

in 1834 as a simple dogtrot home of English immigrant, Henry Fanthorp. The home evolved into a thriving country inn and even a well-known tavern. It also served as the first post office of Anderson. In 1850, Fanthorp expanded the log home with a clapboard exterior and expansive addition. Notable guests include Sam Houston, Zachary Taylor and Kenneth Anderson (all of Republic of Texas fame). The inn went into disrepair and in 1977 the Texas Parks and Wildlife purchased it and began extensive restoration. Today, it’s been restored to its heyday of the 1850s and open for guided tours.

MAP

Now… finally… on to Yankee’s Tavern. Out of Anderson, take Highway 90 North. About 2 miles up, take a right on FM 244. Another 8 miles up, crossing Highway 30, Yankee’s in on the right. On a nice riding weekend, you can’t miss it for all the bikes! Yankee’s offers an inside area, but on a nice day, we strongly recommend hanging out under the huge trees that surround the main building. Most weekends, a live band plays in the outside pavilion. Also behind the main building, Yankee has built a fire pit (can you say warmth on a colder December day?). Yankee has about 10 acres of land and offers the site for events and benefits, including camping. Everyone is always welcome, so make the trip if you haven’t already!

ON THE COVER

Every year, more than 20 correspondents and other staff members attend hundreds of events around the entire state. These next few pages represent Fall events in which we participated! Anyone interested in submitting articles and/or pictures for Thunder Roads Texas - we accept submissions from anyone... and if you’re interested in becoming a part of our team - email shelly@thunderroadstexas.com for details. We’d love to have you!

Biker Pallooza Sponsored by TRT August 17 * Houston Jason English Located just outside of Houston, the Hawg Stop Bar & Grill hosted its first Biker Pallooza put on by Roadhouse Entertainment on August 17. Some riders, including myself, arrived the day before and camped onsite. Since I was a little tired after the ride down, I chilled out at my campsite and didn’t make the Friday night pre-party. The rally got started around 11:00 a.m. Saturday and the first of several bands took the stage around noon. The bands – Victim, Scars Heal In Time, Sid Seventeen, and others – rocked the rally throughout the day and into the night. Dean Seltzer and the Redneck Mothers finished out the night with great music playing until around 2:00 a.m. There were bike games provided by Blowout Productions with something a little special that really got the crowd extra excited; and, let’s just say, the female participants were not shy! The bike show had some very nice bikes and a military themed bike was one of my favorites. The turnout for the first Biker Pallooza was pretty good for a one day event. I think if the next one were extended to two days it would be even better. The Hawg Stop was a great place for this rally with plenty of space for future growth. Until the next rally, everyone ride safe.

Erath County Relay for Life Sponsored by TRT September 21 * Stephenville Randy McCamey Photos by David Swearingen & Scott Randolph The sad truth is that cancer seems to be spreading like… well, like cancer. It seems we hear about cancer in every government report, read about it in every newspaper, and see its impact on every other television documentary. It is everywhere. Danny Boucher, lifetime biker and chair of the Erath County Cruzin’ for a Cause ride committee, knows this all too well. Many of his family members have suffered with and died from various forms of cancer. But bikers don’t back down from a challenge. “We have to work together to make a difference and fight cancer any way we can” says Danny. He and a few friends participating. “We had a activities, so we decided to move the

created the Cruzin’ for a Cause ride last year and had the first ride in the spring of 2013 with 61 bikes great turnout for the first ride” says Danny, “but there were conflicts with some of the other Relay for Life date to September and make this an annual ride”.

So, this fall, bikes lined up at the City Park on Saturday, September 21 and took a relaxing ride through northern Erath County and into Palo Pinto County to raise money for Relay for Life. The group returned to Stephenville for lunch, live entertainment, a silent auction, and several bike games. John Baxter won Best of Show with his blueflamed softtail. The funds raised will be presented at the Erath County Relay for Life event to be held May 2, 2014. For more information on next year’s dates and activities, see the EC Relay for Life website at www.RelayForLife.Org/ ErathCoTX and on Facebook (Relay-For-Life-Erath-County).

5th Annual Freedom on the Hill Sponsored by TRT September 21 * Romayor Don Brewer The event includes an auction, Bar B Q, and motorcycle ride. The purpose is to raise money that they donate to various charities. It was raining the Saturday morning, but 75 to 100 people came out to support the cause; with 11 motorcycles actually braving the weather to participate in the ride. This year they raised about Page 24

$6,500 to go toward Fisher House in Houston. It is cool to go to a new place like this and be welcome like I was their brother. We need more people like these guys. This year, the charity was Fisher House in Houston. It’s similar to a Ronald McDonald house, but they focus in on families of veterans being treated at the VA Hospital. Over the last four years the Freedom on the Hill Ride raised over $50,000.

24th Annual Hawg Wild Motorcycle Rally September 27-29 * Nacogdoches Mike Boone

Deacons of Deadwood October 2 * Houston Shelly Horan & Bob Cooney The Deacons of Deadwood raised over $250,000 at this year’s charity ball; their best year yet. Several factors that contributed to this success: increased sales in VIP tables, silent auction, and raffle for the Softail model of the winner’s choice donated by Mancuso Harley-Davidson, and simply more people (over 800 guests) donating more! Then there was the entertainment. Billy Gibbons and the other members of ZZ Top all live near Houston, and several of Deacons’ members know Billy. Billy had heard that Vince Neil, our original headliner, had cancelled on us when Motley Crue was offered a cool $1,000,000 to play a weekend at a casino. Billy called Deacons’ President Steve Lamb, who has known Billy for years, and offered up The Moving Sidewalks for the Ball, Billy’s band before ZZ Top (for whom our editor, Shelly’s, stepdad’s high school band used to open for!). Having Billy Gibbons as the headliner gave the annual charity event national exposure. There were guests from all over the country, including Jimi Hendrix’ sister, who flew in from Northern California. It was a true sell-out crowd.

Thunderfest October 5 * Nacogdoches Don Brewer, Traci McClure, Jason English The 1st Annual Thunderfest Car and Bike show had a good turn out for a first-time event with somewhere around 100 bikers participating. Thunderfest was sponsored by Texas Thunder Harley Davidson and owners Keith and Gail Calhoun and Jeff and Sandy Brown. The Texas Thunder HOG Chapter, also a sponsor, came up with the event and they gave away free beer, bar-b-que, and cold drinks! It doesn’t get much better than that. They also had a great band called The 3 Cent band; weird name, but they made some great music. There were trophies for the bikes and cars and a live auction was set up with proceeds going to Toys for Tots. Thunderfest also had a thing that was called jumpstart which was a rig that kept the bike stationary so you could test drive any bike. All-in-all, a good time was had by everyone there. I can’t wait to see what they do next year!

Boo Benefit Sponsored by TRT October 11-13 * Jefferson Leah Hanscom Another banner year raising money for children’s burn charities. After years dedicating a lot of their lives to running this phenomenal benefit, Boo & Patsy are hanging up their hat; 2013 was the last year for this benefit event. So if you missed it - you really missed it! Visit their website and/or Facebook page for pictures and information about these great years.

29th Annual Wolf Creek Car, Truck & Bike Show October 19-20 * Point Blank Don Brewer Wolf Creek in Cold Springs has been having this “party” for 29 years and it keeps getting bigger ever year. It started out as Houston Street Rods. Barbara Brock took over 10 years ago when she lost her husband and she does a great job putting on this event. There are cars, trucks, and bikes and they come from everywhere to be in the show.

EVENT

Cold Springs is about 70 miles north of Houston and a million miles from everywhere else. To have this many people bring there cars and bikes is amazing. They put on a great show. Yours truly has been there four years in a row. I took first place three times. I lost out to a friend this year but still took 2nd place with my bike; I guess my bike

is getting old and worn out like me! Carson Classic Motors had two new editions to their collection, a 1926 Indian Scott and a 1942 Harley. Carson has 80 or more running bikes; one of them is a 1946 Indian with 73 miles on it! Thunder Roads Texas did a story on Carson last year and showed a lot of there collection.

12th Annual Lone Star Rally Sponsored by Thunder Roads Texas October 31-November 3 * Galveston Bob Cooney, Shelly Horan, Laura Mae Benson, Don Brewer, Donny Phillips, Bill Barnes, Chris Hensley, Jason English This year, we had another full contingent of at least half our staff. With all the people (estimated at over 400,000 during the four-day event), it’s hard to connect with everyone. So if I missed anyone from our staff in the list – my sincere apologies!! Lone Star Rally celebrated their 12th year of partying… with Texas-sized concerts, a t t r a c t i o n s , exhibits, vendors, rides and activities throughout the Island and nearby Mainland. The Outlaw Dave Ranch Ride (I rode in again this year) made its annual run of about 1,300 bikes. The procession takes about 30 minutes to empty the Stubbs Harley-Davidson parking lot in Houston for the 45 mile, police escorted ride. And what are Texas bikers if they’re not charitable? Proceeds from the ride ($20/person) benefit the Stevens and Pruett Ranch for Abused Children and Animals. And who doesn’t like the roar of motorcycles… as hundreds (maybe thousands) made the promenade down The Strand every day/night. Then there’s the Miss Lone Star Rally Bikini Contest, which culminated Saturday night on the stage in Sangerfest Park. Those who love Sons of Anarchy could meet and greet with Chibs, Tig, Bobby and Juice while attending. Of course, it was Halloween weekend, so there was a haunted house, costumes and other festivities to celebrate this fun holiday.

8th Annual Texas Honor Ride Sponsored by Thunder Roads Texas November 9 * Houston to San Antonio Another record year of fundraising for the Texas Honor Ride; a $260,000 check was handed over to the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. This 175 mile police escorted ride is definitely one to behold... and to participate in! About 775 riders participated and were greeted by flagbearing supporters who lined some of the overpasses along the route. The gas stop at the Buckee’s in Luling is just amazing! Hundreds of bikers in and out (just credit cards & bills - no coin change) in a matter of just minutes! And as always - the welcome is so very warm upon entering the base. This year, in addition to the many Wounded Warriors who have been treated, or are currently being treated, at the center, riders were honored by the attendance of two World War II Veterans. Along with the visits, riders are treated to music, BBQ, and ice cream.

12 Cajun Days of Christmas Day 1 Dear Emile, Thanks for da bird in the Pear tree. I fixed it las nightwith dirty rice an it was delicious. I doan tink the Pear tree would grow inde swamp, so I swapped it for a Satsuma. Day 2 Dear Emile, Your letter said you sent 2 turtle dove, but all I got was 2 scrawny pigeon. Anyway, I mixed them with andouille and made some gumbo out of dem. Day 3 Dear Emile, Why doan you sen me some crawfish? I’m tired of eating dem damned bird. I gave two of those prissy French chicken to Mrs. Fontenot over at Grand Chenier, and fed the tird one to my dog, Phideaux. Mrs. Fontenot needed some sparring partners for her fighting rooster. Day 4 Dear Emile, Mon Dieux! I tole you no more of dem bird. Deez four, what you call “calling bird” wuz so noisy you could hear dem all da’ way to Lafayette. I used they necks for my crab traps, and fed the rest of dem to the gators. Day 5 Dear Emile, You finally sent something useful. I liked dem golden rings, me. I hocked dem at da’ pawn shop in Sulphur and got enough money to fix the shaft on my shrimp boat, and to buy a round for da boys at the Raisin’ Cane Lounge. Merci Beaucoup!

Day 6 Dear Emile, Couchon! Back to da birds, you coonass turkey! Poor egg sucking Phideaux is scared to death ah dem six goose. He try to eat they eggs and they pecked the heck out ah his snout. Dem goose are damm good at eating cockroach around da’ house, though. I may stuff one ah dem goose with erster dressing to serve him on Christmas Day. Day 7 Dear Emile, I’m gonna wring your fool neck next time I see you. Ole Boudreaux, da mailman, is ready to kill you, too. The crap from all dem bird is stinkin up his mailboat. He afraid someone will slip on dat stuff and gonna sue him. I let dem seven swan loose to swim on da bayou and some stupid duck hunter from Mississippi done blasted dem out da water. Talk to you tomorrow. Day 8 Dear Emile, Poor ole Boudreaux had to make 3 trips on his mailboat to deliver dem 8 maids-a-milking & der cows. One of dem cows got spooked by da alligators and almost tipped over da boat. I doan like dem shiftless maids, me. I told dem to get to work gutting fish and sweeping my shack--but dey say it wasn’t in their contract. They probably tink they too good to skin all dem nutria I caught las night. Day 9 Dear Emile, What you trying to do? Boudreaux had to borrow da Cameron Ferry to carry these jumping twits you call lords-a-leaping across da bayou. As soon as dey got here dey wanted a tea break and crumpets. I doan know what dat means but I says, “Well la di da. You get Chicory coffee or nuthin.” Mon Dieux, Emile, what I’m gonna feed all these bozos? They too snooty for fried nutria, and da cow ate up all my turnip green.

Day 10 Dear Emile, You got to be out of you mind. If da mailman don’t kill you, I will. Today he deliver 10 half nekkid floozies from Bourbon Street. Dey said they be ladies dancing” but they doan act like ladies in front of dem Limey sailing boys. Dey almost left after one of them got bit by a water moccasin over by my out house. I had to butcher 2 cows to feed toute le monde (everybody) and get toilet paper rolls. The Sears catalog wasn’t good enough for dem hoity toity lords. Talk at you tomorrow. Day 11 Dear Emile, Where Y’at? Cherio and pip pip. You 11 Pipers Piping arrived today from the House of Blues, second lining as dey got off da boat. We fixed stuffed goose and beef jumbalaya, finished da whiskey, and we’re having a faisdo-do. Da’ new mailman drank a bottle of Jack Daniel, and he’s having a good old time dancing with the floozies. Da’ old mailman done jump off the Moss Bluff Bridge yesterday, screaming you name. If you happen to get a mysteriouslooking, ticking package in da mail, don’t open it. Day 12 Dear Emile, Me I’m sorry to tell you--but I am not your true love anymore. After the fais-do-do, I spent da night with Jacque, the head piper. We decide to open a restaurant and gentlemen’s club on the bayou. The floozies--pardon me-ladies dancing-- can make $20 for a table dance, and the lords can be the waiters and valet park da boats. Since da’ maids have no more cows to milk, I trained dem to set my crab traps, watch my trotlines, and run my shrimping business. We’ll probably gross a million dollars next year.
