Rough estimates of 3,0004,000 bikers descended on Mansfield Park. Biker Rallies of Texas always runs a first class operation; from friendly and helpful staff to entertainment. Dean Seltzer was the headlining act for Saturday night and as always he rocked the house. Some beautiful bikes found their way into the Bike Show Saturday afternoon. It was a great rally and great fun had by all. With spring here, I thought I would share something with you that many of us South Texans have had the pleasure of visiting already. I think Texans from all over would really enjoy going just a little off the highway to visit this great museum that holds some really awesome bikes and not to mention some really great staff that volunteer their time on the weekends to keep this thing going. It took a lot of time, effort, elbow grease, and of course great friendship to pull this thing together. The love of riding and the awesomeness of these machines underneath this roof are worth the drive to Edingburg. It’s almost that time of the year.......blueberry time! The annual Blueberry Festival in Nacogdoches, Texas (the oldest town in Texas) is right around the corner. Scheduled for June 12-13, it coincides with the area harvesting of that luscious fruit, blueberries. Not only are they tasteful, but are full of
Blueberries can be bought right off the truck, $10 for 5lbs...and that is a lot of blueberries. Or, if you are feeling more adventurous, you can take a shuttle to the Blueberry Place where you can pick blueberries right from the bush. Be sure and get there early Saturday for their famous blueberry pancakes. The line usually trails all around the downtown square but are worth the wait. Lots of vendors will be there selling everything “blueberry” as well as just about anything else you would see at a shindig such as this. Food vendors serving everything from blueberry cookies to sausage on a stick and mouth watering hamburgers will be lined up. The L-2 GWRRA motorcycle group will have paid secured parking for your bikes on the east end of the square. This money and entry fee from games will benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor fund at Texas Children’s Hospital. The band line-up is awesome this year with bands playing on three different stages from 9am to 4pm Saturday. There is something for everyone, from pie eating contests to a classic car show. I promise, you won’t be bored. Linda Thundcer Roads Texas East Texas Correspondent The dream began in 1956 by PW Tripp when he opened a Harley-Davidson dealership in Roswell, New Mexico. After seven years there, PW moved his dealership to Amarillo in 1963. PW Tripp operated and owned the business for 30 years until 1986 when he decided to retire and turn over his successful dealership to his son, Terry Tripp. In 1998, Terry moved the business from a 9,000 sq. ft. building to its current location, a 40,000 sq. ft. location at IH-40 and Bell. While still the owners of the dealership in 2008 Terry promoted his son Jason Tripp as the general manager. daredevil show. The day’s events included a bake sale by the Ladies of Harley, food provided by Hoffbrau Steaks, live music by the Buster Bledsoe band, motorcycle stunts, and the finale was a Daredevil stunt show by Bubba Blackwell, “The American Daredevil” who jumped 12 Ford pickups on his Harley Davidson. Mr. Blackwell is a World Record Daredevil. As the anticipation and excitement built, Bubba came riding out waving to the crowd and preparing for the jump. After careful evaluation, he revved up his Harley and was successful in his attempt. The weather was perfect for the party. As with all successful events, a big ‘THANKS” must go to all those who volunteered their time, the Amarillo HOG Chapter, the Road Captains who made sure everyone parked safely and provided traffic direction, Ladies of Harley, Amarillo Police Department for crowd control, Hoffbrau Steaks for the food, Buster Bledsoe band for entertainment, the entire staff of Tripp’s Harley Davidson, and Bubba Blackwell. No Destination Ever! am telling you folks, don’t ever make a reservation if you plan on traveling on a motorcycle! I am in travel plan hell right now! Today is April 7b and I start my next vacation in six days. Two months ago we thought it would be a great idea to plan our next vacation and head down to the Hill Country because my magazine just got through doing a special edition featuring the area. We thought it would be really cool if we found a one of a kind cabin we could stay in for a couple of nights! After a great deal of searching on line I ran across a place called Cool Water Acres right on the outskirts of Bandera. Smack dab in the heart of the Hill Country! Then we checked the weather. I clicked on the tab that gives you a ten day forecast. I typed in Bandera, Texas. And the results were as bad as it gets. RAIN! All rain, nothing but rain; all seven days of our vacation. I hate rain seven days out. You never know what’s going to happen. I didn’t get a chance to stay at Cool Water Acres but this is a place I absolutely plan on checking out as soon as I can! 500 acres of land and only one cabin! A private seven-acre lake with two kinds of boats to use while you’re doing a little fishing and they supply the rods and reels. How cool is that? To top it off they even provide fresh eggs every morning! Talk about country hospitality! This sounds like my kind of place. Still checking the weather every day the outlook kept getting worse. Rain all over the place, except New Mexico! So the hunt was on and the planning began. I have only been to New Mexico one time before and it is a magical place. I started getting excited about the sights and sounds of places like Red River, Taos, and Angel Fire. Then a day later we checked the forecast again and there it was...

Snow – in April! Mother Nature is starting to piss me off! At this point we beginning to think we were going to have to either take the truck or buy a plane ride. My wife told me we can’t go on vacation without the bike! This is a statement every biker husband on the planet wants to hear. I agreed with her and began a new search. I think I typed in every city you could name in the states all around Texas. Then with the push of a few keyboard letters we had the weather we were looking for. Eureka Springs, Arkansas! The five day forecast was like music to my ears; 80 degrees and nothing but sunshine! We are going to Arkansas! If you have never been to Arkansas it has got to be one of the top motorcycle friendly places in the United States (aside from Texas, of course). My wife and I have been to Arkansas on many trips and never hesitate to make it our destination. The roads are nothing less than a pure joy to run from one corner of the state to another. They remind me of the best roller coaster rides at the best amusement park in the country. The twist and turns seem to never come to an end. The crazy thing is most of the roads are in perfect condition. The mountains in Arkansas are absolutely breathtaking! Yes, I said mountains. Arkansas has two mountain ranges, the Ozarks and the Ouachita Mountains. They are not the biggest mountains in the United States but on a motorcycle, you would never know the difference!
about traveling on a motorcycle is you don’t have to be tied down to one location. If it’s crappy weather down south just turn the handlebars to the north. You can’t get too hung up on making a particular destination. There are roads leading everywhere… and there are always new places and roads to discover. Some of the best roads I have found were due to either taking a wrong turn or just avoiding the big black cloud that lay right in your path! When it comes to destinations I have always found that no matter where you’re at, there you are! I’m sorry to all you ladies out there but I have to ask a question. Why is it the man of the house can be packed and ready a week before the vacation, but the lady wants to wait till the morning that we are leaving? It’s actually ok with me I have figured this puzzle out. She gets one saddle bag and I get the other! Mine looks like the art of packing perfection! And hers looks like your teenager’s closet! I don’t care who you are that’s funny! Wish us luck on our trip! Mother Nature better be on our side! And as always… the adventure of riding is to ride another day!
Weather plays a huge part of making a vacation on a motorcycle a success. I’m not afraid of hitting rain once in a while but on our last vacation down to Houston we put in a total of 21 hours in the rain trying to make it back home! So that’s why I am a little gun shy this year. The best thing

Delmer Barkley’s HAWG EMPIRE! ver the past two decades my band and I have performed at hundreds of biker bars across the southern United States. In the early days, we played biker bars with simple names like Pop’s, Mom’s, Michael’s Ice House, Murphy’s On Main, Pelican Junction, The Blue Door, and many others. They were places that bikers naturally gravitated to. As the space/time odometer rolled over into the new millennium, new biker establishments were purposely designed to meet the wants, needs, and desires of the 21st Century biker. Venues must have plenty of bike parking on a solid surface so kickstands will not sink into the dirt. A designated bike parking area is a plus so that bikes will not be competing with cages. Easy in/out road access is a desired safety feature. Bikers like to be able to see their bikes while they enjoy the camaraderie of fellow bikers, cold beer, good food, and live music. With all these requirements in mind, establishments started popping up with names associated with a motorcycle parts, functions, or activities: The Kickstand; Ezy Riders; The Full Throttle; Knuckleheads; The Suck, Bang, Blow; and others. One of the places that fills the bill is the perfectly named HAWG STOP! The Hawg Stop sprang up in 2000 in the lower San Jacinto River jungle of East Harris County, Texas. It started out as a tin building and a chrome dream for the trucker/biker Delmer Barkley. In the beginning, the Hawg Stop didn’t

offer patrons much more than a good shade, cold beer, and beef jerky. Local bands played in a dark corner, on a concrete floor on Saturday nights. Today, the site encompasses 36 beautiful, wooded acres of pure Hawg heaven that now includes RV parking, camping, and a 5-acre Hawg Lake. Bikes are protected in a designated bike parking area. Separate entrances are used for bikes and cages during major concert and cook off events. Beef jerky is still available unless you prefer the genuine, down home flavor of a old style, homemade Hawg Burger with all the trimming from the Hawg Stop Grill. I’m getting’ hungry just writin’ this! Bands no longer have to perform in a dark corner on a concrete floor. A full sized, professionally lighted showroom style stage, complete with a drum riser, spotlights every band like super-stars as they deliver their own brand of house-rockin’ music to the appreciative Hawg Stop audiences several nights a week and Sunday afternoons. Realizing the need for a bigger live entertainment facility in order to deliver bigger and better concerts to his growing clientele hungry for bands who could crank out southernfried sounds, the Hawg Stop Amphitheater was built on the south end of the property in 2004. The following year saw the birth on the annual Hawg Stop Blues Festival. Through the years, hundreds of legendary blues acts have delighted the Hawg Stop crowds. In an effort to utilize the Amphitheater year round, special concert events have
seen performances by legendary rock groups: Ten Years After, Canned Heat, Bad Company, Black Oak Arkansas, Johnny Winter, country outlaw David Allan Coe, and many more. Independent promoters often lease the grounds to promote their own events for bike rallies, bike shows, car shows, concerts, benefits, fundraisers, Crawfish Boils, BBQ Cook offs, etc. Rumor has it that Delmer Barkley’s Hawg Empire will soon add another feature: a zip line that will zip you nearly a quarter mile, a hundred feet high, across Hawg Lake... and back! Along with that comes HAWG TOWN, a row of stores and gift shops complete with wooden sidewalks made to look like an old western town straight out of Gunsmoke. There may even be a bikini bike wash and detail shop in the works? Over the past decade, The Hawg Stop has become one of the most famous biker stops on the Texas Gulf Coast and is one of my favorite biker bars to showcase my band: Mean Gene Kelton & the Die Hards! Jerry Frankson Memorial Ride By Joyce Siegert, D/FW Correspondent
I
had the pleasure to join in the Jerry Frankson Memorial ride on Saturday, March 13. It was amazing the amount of people who attended but then there always has been a camaraderie/brotherhood among bikers. There were approximately 80 people in attendance; roughly 40 bikes. Karen, Jerry’s wife, was along for the ride as well as their children, Jerry, Jr. and Heather. Jerry, whom the ride honored, passed to the great bike rally in the sky on 3/14/08 due to natural causes. This is the second memorial ride in Jerry’s honor promoted by the Dickweeds. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. It was absolutely beautiful out, although it was still cool enough for at least a leather jacket. The sky was a clear blue with only a few puffs of clouds. This was an 84-mile ride that started at the Old Town Flying Pig Bar & Grill in Lewisville and ended at Loose Wheels in Denison. Many of the stops were chosen because these are some of Jerry’s favorite ride and places along the way. He liked to ride back roads to get to them. Karen rode with friends since she is suffering from terminal cancer. At one time she used to ride her own bike. It is packed with all sorts of foods with interesting names such as Nerds (inside out tater tots filled with melty jalapeno cheddar cheese), Crybabies (cheddar cheese stuffed jalapenos), and Fried Mac & Cheese to name a few. You can call them to find out more – 940686-2400. After we finished our drinks we headed north on Highway 377 to Catfish Haven in Whitesboro for lunch. It was a short 30 minute drive between Bully’s and Catfish Haven. The organizer of the ride called ahead and reserved half of the dining area for us. This is a great place to eat and their hush puppies were like none I had ever eaten; they were spicy and there was no need for tartar sauce. After lunch we headed south on Highway 377 over to Highway 82 to Loose Wheels in Denison, where the ride officially ended. This is one cool club – words cannot begin to describe this establishment! There is plenty of bike
parking and it has an outdoor stage with picnic table seating, two large fire pits and an adjacent barbeque house where they do all their grilling. There is also a stage inside for the cooler months. The building is built around a re-erected radar tower which sat in ruins for years before being brought back to life. You can see the lower portion of the structure from inside, while you can view the top of it from the outside. A Harley sits halfway up the frame of the tower on the inside with lights wrapped all around the structure. They also have two of the largest fans you have ever seen, appropriately named Big Ass Fans. The frame inside of this fine establishment encompasses the bar. We started the ride at 1:00 p.m. and rode to our first stop at Schulers Sports Bar. Unfortunately, they didn’t open till 2:00 p.m., so we all made a short detour north on Highway 377 to Bully’s Bar & Grill in Pilot Point. Lucky for us Bully’s

Warm Weather Gear o far it has been a fairly cool spring, but every day it seems the temperature is starting to rise, giving way to more and more riders hitting the road. As summer approaches, the temperature will rise even more; the balancing act of safety gear and staying cool begins. I have tested two pieces of gear this past year that maintains some form of safety but also provides comfort to the rider. First up is the Tourmaster Gel Cruiser II Gloves. These are definitely great gloves by all means to wear during the warm season. They provide good protection and when you first put them on, they feel almost too thick. After the break in period, these gloves feel so soft and flexible; I forget I am wearing them. They have an outer gel lining that claims to reduce vibration in the hands, but honestly, I cannot really tell the difference. Also, after 15,000 miles of riding with these gloves, the gel lining basically became nonexistent due to wear and tear. As far as cooling, these gloves are the perfect balance of protection and ventilation. Though they are meant for warm weather, these gloves actually do fine even in the cooler temperatures; down to about 50 degrees. Even, though the outer gel liner came apart, the rest of the glove is very durable. My pair has seen temperatures down to 30 degrees, thunderstorms, and temperatures in excess of 100 degrees; and they are still very much intact and functional. Tourmaster has definitely, made a great pair of gloves that goes well with any motorcycle. I would definitely buy these gloves again! And at a retail price of under $36.00 they are even better. Next up is the GMAX helmet. It is no secret that I prefer the protection and look of a full face helmet; but there are times that I just simply enjoy the “bad-boy” look of half helmets. ‘GMAX leads the helmet industry with another

Conclusion – I know it’s very tempting not to wear any type of gloves or helmet during the summer months. Each of us will have to determine if it’s worth risking skin, bones, or even our lives to not wear protection because it’s “too hot.” Time and time again, I remember the phrase “it’s better to sweat than to bleed.” For those who want the compromise of comfort and safety these two products are great. As always, ride safely, and ‘See you on the high ground!’

T
he Texas Honor Ride turns five this year. To celebrate we are adding a new ride to our schedule. Come join us on May 15 at Stubbs Harley-Davidson on Telephone Road for the Texas Honor Ride Fun Run. The ride will be a leisurely run covering approximately 80 miles with plenty of time for stops along the way to take in the scenery and make new friends. From Stubbs the ride will head east towards La Porte past the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site where Texian troops under General Sam Houston won independence
for Texas by defeating the Mexican Army led by General Santa Anna in 1836. From La Porte the ride will cross 178 feet above the Houston Ship Channel on the graceful Fred Hartman Bridge. Just past the Bridge, one of the stops on the ride will be at the location where one of the scenes from the 1968 movie “Hellfighters” was filmed with John Wayne. This is also a great vantage point to snap a few pictures of the Fred Hartman Bridge. From here the ride will wind its way past Mont Belvieu and up towards the historic town of Dayton. Dayton was first called West Liberty and was considered part of the original town of Liberty, founded in 1831. The Trinity River divided the two parts of the town: Liberty was on its east bank, and West Liberty was on a hill three miles west of the river. The ride will end back at Stubbs Harley-Davidson where there will be prizes for the highest points from the Fun Run as well as music, food, raffles and of course, Texas Honor Ride gear! The highlight of the event will be a live auction
of an American Flag themed guitar signed by some of our wounded heroes from the Brooke Army Medical Center. To participate in the Fun Run it’s $20 for the Bike/Rider and $5 for the passenger or additional hands. All monies raised goes to help the wounded warriors and their families at the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio. This will be our first ride in the southeast area of Houston so come and show your support for our troops and their families and have a great time. We’ve even designed a new t-shirt to commemorate the Texas Honor Ride 5th Anniversary and the first Texas Honor Ride Fun Run. Blue Star Memorial Highways By Shelly Horan, Editor
A
s we remember those who gave all, we visit a littleknown (may more forgotten) memorial program, the Blue Star Memorial Highway system. In 1944, the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs planted 8,000 dogwood tress on a 5-1/2 mile stretch of US 22 as part of a beautification project. These trees were planted as a living memorial to the men and women in the Armed Forces from New Jersey. Along the way, large Blue Star Memorial Highway markers were placed. The project name comes from the official banner that family of service members in harm’s way were given by the US Military with a blue star representing each family member in active duty. (A banner with a gold star represents a family member that died during service.) After World War II, the National Council of Garden Clubs (now National Garden Clubs, Inc.) took the New Jersey program nationwide to pay tribute to the nation’s armed forces. Today, the Blue Star Memorial Highways are a living tribute to all men and women who have served, are serving, or will serve in any branch of the United States Military; wartime or peacetime. In 1947, Texas Garden Clubs took on the first project with US 77 from Oklahoma state line at Gainesville to Denton and expansion in 1953 from Denton to the Mexico border, via other highways. It was another 30 years before Texas picked the program up again: • 1971 – NASA Parkway, between Highway 3 and NASA’s Johnson Space Center

• 1975 – State 155 from Palestine to Linden • 1976 – US 59 from Houston to Texarkana • 1976 – US 287 from the AndersonHouston county line to the JohnsonEllis County line • 1976 – US 385 from Big Bend National Park north to the Oklahoma state line north of Dalhart • 1978 – US 271 from Paris to Gladewater • 1983 – FM 3188 from State 94 to Camp Olympia in Trinity County • 1988 – US 287 in Avondale through Saginaw, Fort Worth and Kennedale to Mansfield Blue Star Memorial Highway Markers, honoring Texas service men and women, are found along these routes. An expansion of the program added placement of Blue Star Memorial markers in non-highway locations, such as national cemeteries, parks, veterans’ facilities, and gardens. While not all markers are listed in one place, the most comprehensive list we could find is in Waymarking. com, which offers a Blue Star Memorial category. We’ve included six of the fifteen listed markers (Weatherford, Burleson, Midlothian, and three in Fort Worth) on our Monthly Ride Map.

I think Texans from all over would really enjoy going just a little off the highway to visit this great museum that holds some really awesome bikes and not to mention some really great staff that volunteer their time on the weekends to keep this thing going. It took a lot of time,
South Texas Motorcycle Museum 4705 E Richardson Road Edingburg, TX 78542 STXMM.org effort, elbow grease, and of course great friendship to pull this thing together. The love of riding and the awesomeness of these machines underneath this roof are worth the drive to Edingburg. The town of Edingburg is on the southern edge of Highway 281. Many riders come through here every day and especially for the big rallies held in South Padre every year. Edingburg has a little jewel of place, the South Texas Motorcycle Museum. Founded by Mike and Karen Sweeney and overseen by the neighboring motorcycle mechanic, Dirty Dave, the museum is filled with some awesome restored bikes. The staff are really great people who volunteer their time on weekends to greet you and answer any questions you may have. We were really taken aback when my son Lucas got to rev up the throttle on Dave’s old knucklehead that he happened to be working on the day we visited. We had a blast and we took many pictures! inally the weather cooperated for Damon Dave, the promoter of the NEW Carts, Bikers and Babes Rally. He has been hit with horrible weather for his past two years with The Texas Rally (coming in September). When I saw him on Saturday he not only had a big smile on his face, but he had lost his voice from talking with everyone at the rally! Go Dave! The turnout for the rally was fantastic. Bikes, carts, and hot babes as far as you could see! This new Cart Rally concept was originated by Dave and it has turned out to be a great idea. There were carts there that ranged everywhere from the type of golf cart I used to rent at the San Jose Municipal Golf Course (old, slow and beat up), to one that had a Suzuki, 650cc, water cooled engine in it! Shifter on the side and a guaranteed kick ass cart! I have to admit to being
pretty amazed by the creativity of some of the cart owners. Our good friend Blowout was the emcee for the event, doing his usual great job and the bands that Dave booked were all fantastic. Everyone partied in the area in front of the stage until late at night. At around 8:00pm, in pure Damon Dave style, a keg of beer was tapped by the stage offering FREE beer to everyone for the rest of the night. Dave always puts on a great show and is a great host. For a first time rally, this one has to be put into the HOME RUN category. Dave did some outstanding promoting and the results were there…lots of people having lots of fun. Make sure to put this one on your list for next year. Thunder Roads Texas will be a part of it again!

Too Much at Risk By Shelly Horan, Editor The other day, a friend made a comment about how dangerous the freeway is, especially for motorcycles. A light went off and I commented back to her that our safety is at most risk at an intersection, where car drivers enter the without realizing they’re compromising our space. I get daily updates, through various sources, on anything to do with motorcycles in Texas. At this writing, the last six days were not good for motorcyclists here. Every single one of these days carried a headline from somewhere in Texas about a rider losing his/her life in a motorcycle accident. Of those six, five were at intersections.
May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. There are many things we can do as riders: organize or attend a Proclamation signing at your nearest city hall or county headquarters (visit RideSafeInTexas.homestead.com), work with a motorcyclist association to help from the political side, and take responsibility for your riding safety. One thing you can do, right now, is to share information with your cage friends and family to help them be more aware of motorcyclists on the road. Ten Things Cage Drivers Should Know
1. Look for motorcycles, especially when checking traffic at an intersection. 2. A motorcycle is closer than it appears, especially in mirrors. 3. Take an extra moment to thoroughly check for motorcycles and double-check your blind spots by turning your head. Don’t rely on your mirrors. 4. Don’t assume all motorcyclists are speed demons. The majority adhere to the speed limit. 5. Motorcyclists often slow by downshifting or merely rolling off the throttle, thus not activating the brake light. Allow more following distance and at intersections, predict a motorcyclist may slow down without visual warning. 6. Most turn signals on a motorcycle are not self-canceling, thus some riders sometimes forget to turn them off after a turn or lane change. Make sure a motorcycle’s signal is for real. 7. Motorcyclists often adjust position within a lane to be seen more easily and to minimize the effects of road debris, passing vehicles, and wind. Never share a lane with a motorcyclist. 8. Maneuverability is one of a motorcycle’s better characteristics, but don’t expect a motorcyclist to always be able to dodge out of the way. 9. Stopping distance for motorcycles is nearly the same as for cars, but slippery pavement makes stopping quickly difficult. 10. alcolm O’Reilly hoisted his beer and said, “Here’s to spending the rest of me life, between the legs of me wife!” That won him the top prize at the pub for the best toast of the night!
He went home and told his wife, Mary, “I won the prize for the best toast of the night.” She said, “Aye, did ye now? And what was your toast?” Malcolm said, “Here’s to spending the rest of me life, sitting in church beside me wife.” “Oh, that is very nice indeed, Malcolm!’ Mary said. The next day, Mary ran into one of Malcolm’s drinking buddies on the street corner. The man chuckled leeringly and said, “Mal won the prize the other night at the pub with a toast about you, Mary.” She said, “Aye, he told me. I was a bit surprised myself. You know, he’s only been there twice in the last four years. Once he fell asleep, and the other time I had to pull him by the ears to make him come.”

truck driver had to deliver 100 penguins to the state zoo. As he was driving his truck through the desert, the truck broke down. After waiting by the side of the road for about three hours, he waved another truck down and offered a good ‘ol boy, Bubba, $500 to take the penguins to the state zoo for him. The next day, the first truck driver arrived in town and saw Bubba crossing the road with the 100 penguins walking in pairs of two, directly behind him.

The doctor instructed her to rub her chest every day and say, “Scooby doobie doobies, I want bigger boobies!” She did this faithfully for several months, and to her utter amazement she grew to a nice D-cup. One morning she was running late, got on the bus, and in a panic realized she had forgotten her morning ritual. Frightened she might lose her lovely boobs if she didn’t recite the ritualistic rhyme, she stood right there in the middle aisle of the bus, closed her eyes and said, ‘Scooby doobie doobies, I want bigger boobies.’ A guy sitting nearby looked at her and asked “Oh! Are you a patient of Dr. Bumbutu’s?” “Yes I am. How did you know?” He winked and whispered, ”Hickory dickory dock…”
