It’s Going New to be a Year! Busy Fall Happy It’s been a very hot summer! Because of the heat, summer vacations, kiddos out of school and more, there aren’t as many motorcycle events as there are during the Spring and Fall. So we’ve been working on building up our bike night here in Houston. Thanks to the Texas Confederation of Clubs & Independents (Texas COC&I), we added a burnout trailer. As of going to print with this issue, we have yet to hold our July bike night. It was late because of a schedule conflict at the venue and had to be moved later in the month. But we’re anticipating one of our largest turnouts yet. We’ve also been working on the 2011 Points Across Texas™ reader rides program (see page 15). If you have any suggestions for locations or categories, please let us know! We really do consider this magazine and the programs to be YOURS and we want to hear from you. As the summer nears an end, it promises to be a VERY busy Fall rally season. We’re sponsoring all of the major motorcycle events (and some smaller local benefits) around Texas this fall: • Thunder in the Pines • Texas National Motorcycle Rally • The Oldest Town in Texas (OTT) Rally • Texas State HOG Rally October 22-24 October 1-3 September 17-19 September 2-4 ThunderInThePines.org TNMRally.net OTTRally.com TXStateHOGRally.com Bastrop Baytown Nacogdoches Wichita Falls • Summertime Bikes & Blues Festival September 3-5 FreeportBluesFestival.com Freeport

As we continue to grow, we need help. Effective sales staff is critical to our continued growth and success. If you have what it takes, contact us today. We offer good compensation, pay monthly and on time, and you can become part of the Thunder Roads Texas family. Additionally, we are always looking for correspondents. These are riders who are out and about on their bikes all the time, either visiting biker friendly locations, riding great Texas roads, or attending motorcycle events and rallies. Writing background is not necessary, that’s what editors are for. But you do need to commit to taking pictures (with a decent camera) and representing Thunder Roads Texas. Correspondents are volunteers that carry press credentials and are assisted with getting into rallies and events at no cost for the purposes of providing media coverage in THE motorcycle magazine for Texas riders. After a stormy night, the morning of May 15, 2010 arrived with clear skies and beautiful conditions for the 2nd Annual Cpl. Chad O. Memorial Benefit/Ride for P.T.S.D. (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). The 95 miles from Austin to

The Freedom Ride is on! The mission is to wholly support and work toward the release of The Leavenworth 10, a group of soldiers/Marines incarcerated at Ft. Leavenworth for killing members of Al-Qaeda or Iraqi insurgents. These decorated and committed soldiers/Marines who honorably served their country—achieving a significant number of combat medals over multiple deployments—are now serving sentences ranging between 10 and 40 years. They and their families have fallen victim to the untenable Rules of Engagement, demoralizing “Catch and Release” policies, and climate of political correctness that govern our troops’ actions while trying to survive a combat zone. Please take the time to read their stories, and if you believe they should not be forgotten and left behind, then join us September 4, 2010 for a Freedom Ride to bring awareness to their cases and most importantly let these soldiers/Marines know that we wholly and completely support each of them. Please visit L10FreedomRide.com for more information, or contact Spock at Spockpv@yahoo.com.

BON Cross-Country Party – Galveston-Style

Yoakum included a stop in Lockhart at Werner’s Steakhouse for a quick stretch of the legs and liquid refreshments. A second stop at the Long Branch Saloon in Gonzales kept the riders refreshed for the final leg. We arrived in Yoakum to find our host, Fat Albert’s BBQ & Ice House with a newly expanded patio and a stage area. We spent the afternoon enjoying great food from Fat Albert’s while listening to live music from Mike and the Moon Pies. A washer tournament, a pool tournament and a silent auction added to the festivities. We’re already looking forward to next years ride. See you all on May 21, 2011!! Proud Marine Mom, Julie S. Biker or Not (BON) called for all users to organize parties across the country June 4-6; to party together in spirit. Angie, “A Rose is a Rose” on BON, along with a group of 14 others from the Houston area organized their party in Galveston. Held at Crazy Oaks in Galveston, activities included a scavenger hunt, poker run, dunking booth, cook out to sell plates, 50/50 raffle, Blessing of the Bikes,

and a live band, Electric Blues Crew. About $500 (net proceeds from the weekend) were donated to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston. More than 30,500 bikers across the nation RSVPd to local events, with about 200 people participating in Galveston through the course of the weekend. Everyone had a blast and said they could not wait for next year’s event. “Lady Blue”

I’m a Biker! f you can say this you are one of the lucky ones. All my life I have been an adrenalin junky. If you’re not living life on the edge, you’re taking up too much space! As I run through the back roads of life, one thing I look back with the greatest pleasure is reliving all the great moments I have spent on a motorcycle! My first crazy memories of being on a motorcycle started off on a Honda mini trail 50 in third grade. Two days after I was released from the hospital for having my appendix removed. I was sitting in the garage gazing at my Royal Steed. Both my parents were gone to work. The best trails in the world were across the street

more than likely needed to get to a hospital. This is one of those phone calls you do not want to make! Should I leave you stranded? Ok I won’t. I lived to ride another day! And I’m not quite sure but deep down inside I think my Dad was whispering, That’s my boy! Here is another good one when I look back. I was 26 years old. I thought I had learned all my lessons by now! Nope! I was raising cane on a 250 Honda dirt bike that would climb a building if you could just hang on. I invited my Mother and my two daughters to come out and check out a photo shoot I was going to do for my racing profile. This is when reality set in. The scene was set. The cameras were ready. The Jump was about a 20 foot tall table top that would lend eagerly to the tossing of a great machine! I lined up the shot and figured go big or go home. On the first jump of course I laid it so far sideways I could not recover! I have to stop drinking coffee before these rides. I hit too hard to one side of the bike and went down in a cloud of smoke and dust! I did this way to many times in my youth! Always invite your whole family to show them how well you can crash a motorcycle! My mom and daughters were horrified. I actually got up and shook myself off and got back on the bike. I knew something was not right with my left

knee… but it didn’t hurt too bad so I went on to finish the photo shoot and the day was somewhat of a success! The next morning I checked myself in the hospital and had knee surgery that afternoon! The fun never ends! In 1991 I was involved in a near fatal motorcycle crash that gave me my first ride in a care-flight helicopter. I broke damn near every bone in my body. It took me two years to fully recover and get a doctors release so I could return to work. I spent the next eight years living the life of your average American. Work, paying the bills, yard work, paying more bills, and not riding a motorcycle. I could not take it anymore. I knew everyone who knew me would rather kill me than to allow be back on a bike. So I didn’t tell anyone when I walked into the Honda shop on my way home from work one day and said “What’s it going to take to buy one of these things” To my total shock I was the owner of a brand new motorcycle! No one knew about this! What the hell was I going to do? Well what I did do was ride that baby home. I pulled into the garage and my awesome wife poked her head out into the garage and said “You bought a motorcycle!” From that moment on both our lives were changed forever. It’s been 11 years now since we took to the roads. We have seen America in a whole new light. Who ever knew how great the smells are; how the sounds are so clear? Things on the side of the road had meaning now. Roads became personalities. Cars became the enemy! People became your friend in the time that you were filling up the gas tank. You were invited into a family of folks that waved to you as you passed by. I am a biker!

from my house. The hot spots in the trails had names like “The Pit”, “The Corner”, and the ultimate spot, “The Pond”! I just felt like no one would even know I was gone. 30 minutes, hit a couple of jumps. Cruise by the pond for a moment and then coast back into the garage without a hint I was on the bike at all! Well it did not work out that way! I was racing down my favorite trail heading to the Pond and I figured I would hit my favorite jump and throw that Honda 50 sideways like Travis Pastrana! He was not even born yet! Well when I chunked it sideways I got a little excited and the bike did not recover very well! BAM! I slapped the ground with a full scale body slam! Here is the gross part. Busted my stitches open and filled that wound with a huge portion of Texas Dirt! To my amazement the bike started up. I was in bad shape. I was only in third grade! I rode home and realized pretty quickly that I should probably call my parents and let them know I Page 12

Starman Rides Again his month, instead of writing about bands, I chose to tell you all about a great friend of mine, Lonnie Loehr of Pasadena, Texas. Lonnie recently faced a serious health situation that many people in his (our) age group are currently going through. Hopefully, Lonnie’s story will be of help to you and/or someone near and dear to you. I first met 50-something year old biker Lonnie “Starman” Loehr around 2005. He approached me about performing at a benefit he was producing for his chosen charity, USMC Toys For Tots. Lonnie, an avid live music lover, began showing up at many of our shows across Southeast Texas, so much so he joked about becoming a male groupie. We became great friends. I learned that he had been riding bikes since he was a kid and proudly wears the scars earned from years of professional bike competition. I also learned that Lonnie was a two-time US Army vet.

before he found himself thrown out, banned and barred from most of his favorite neighborhood waterin’ holes where he had been a welcome customer for years. At our shows, Lonnie would become obnoxious, and insist on singing. He was not a singer, and would get irate when we would not let him have his moment on stage. During this dark period, he scribbled out a song that he wanted me to decipher and sing. Written single-spaced on legal sized paper, it was thirteen pages long!

Lonnie got real quiet, as if a light had come on. “I don’t know,” he muttered. “They’re all in the same office. They have to know! No, come to think of it… I don’t think so.” Over the next few days, Lonnie arranged a face-toface meeting with all three doctors at once. All three doctors, not knowing Lonnie had been seen by the others, came to the conclusion they had nearly killed Lonnie by overdosing him on anti-rejection drugs, antidepressants and blood thinners. When mixed with a couple of friendly beers during Lonnie’s daily after work ritual, the lethal mixture of prescription drugs and alcohol turned him into a raving lunatic.

Lonnie, along with our friend Bucky “Two Notes” Bishop, went with me the day I bought my first Harley at Stubbs Cycles in Houston. Since then, Lonnie has been to my house numerous times to help me customize my bike. When he saw the tools I was using were rusty pieces of crap, he gave me a brand new set. That’s the kind of guy he is. Lonnie is a fantastic chef and loves to cook. He has often called the band and other Die Hards to come eat just ‘cause he felt like cooking up a mess o’ ribs, steaks or shish-ka-bobs. Yep! Life is always a party with Lonnie around.

As months passed, Lonnie’s personality changes caused even lifelong friends to fear him and keep their distance. On numerous occasions, Lonnie showed up to my gigs beat all to hell from fights with best friends. Often the fights resulted when concerned friends would try to take Lonnie’s keys to keep him from driving. Especially times when he dropped his bike even before he got it started. We all feared we would get that dreaded phone call in the middle of the night. Other times, Lonnie would make obscene insults or threaten people until somebody popped him. It wasn’t long Page 16

H

August 2010

Lonnie said since his first heart stent, details of his life were fuzzy and his brain had been lost in a fog. Life seemed surreal. He felt confused, detached and couldn’t focus. He suffered blackouts and was unable to remember where he had been, and what had happened. I could hear his disbelief when I explained his violent tirade toward Joni. He poured out an emotional apology, that he never meant to scare Joni or anyone else. Concerned about my friend, I asked how many doctors he was seeing and how many prescriptions he was on. His answer: three separate doctors with three separate sets of prescriptions. “Does each doctor know about the other two?” I asked. “Does each doctor know what the others are prescribing?”

Lonnie always showed up to our shows with a big smile, bought the band a round, and passed out cigars as if he was celebrating something. Every day was a celebration for Lonnie, a guy who was always surrounded by friends, and never met a stranger.

In November 2007, the good times caught up with Lonnie. He had a first heart stent implanted in his artery. Three months later, another stent was put in. Within a few months, we noticed a change in Lonnie, for the worse. He was no longer the happy-go-lucky, good-timing, freewheeling, high-spirited guy that we all knew and loved. He had developed a short fuse, a hair trigger, and an explosive temper. The smallest comment would send him into a rage.

of his favorite neighborhood bars. “I don’t know,” came his puzzled reply. I asked him if he knew why his best friends were kicking his ass. “I’ve wondered the same thing,” he said. “All I know is I wake up with bumps and bruises all over me.”

Like everyone else, I tried not to get involved with Lonnie’s personal life. I kept my distance until one night on the way home from a show. I realized it was time. Joni was madder than hell and in tears as she told me how Lonnie had sat down next to her at the bar and scared the hell out of her. She said that one minute he was fine, and the next minute he flew into a maniacal rage. He pounded his fists on the counter, screamed in her face, made threats of violence against her and our mutual friends, and violently threw a tip jar at the barmaid clear across the bar. She was sure he was going to hit her, and feared for her safety. She says she knew he wasn’t drunk, he wasn’t even in there as she put it. In other words, the lights were on but nobody was home. The next day, I called Lonnie around lunchtime, knowing that would be the time of the day he would be most calm. I asked him if he remembered his conversation with Joni. “No,” he calmly replied. He did not even remember seeing her. I asked him if he knew why he was getting kicked out

Once the doctors compared notes and got him on the correct dosages, Lonnie’s problems quickly disappeared. Soon Lonnie was back to being his same happy-go-lucky self – passing out cigars, cooking out on the grill, promoting charity bike runs, producing Toys For Tots events and enjoying friends, family and life to the fullest. Great to have ya back, Starman! I interviewed Lonnie Loehr before writing this story. We mutually agreed I should publish his story, in hopes his experience may help prevent someone from suffering a similar situation, with a possible worse outcome. His message to you: Make sure all your doctors know about all other doctors you may be seeing, and for what reason, and how many other prescriptions you may be taking. Ask a million questions! Do not be intimidated by doctors. You are hiring them, not the other way around. Remember... Doctors are people too and make mistakes. Confidentiality is one thing, but lack of shared information can kill you! Always get a second opinion.

Texas Bikers for Bikers By Dean Downey, Amarillo Correspondent

O

n April 25, 2010 motorcyclists gathered at the Grace Church in Amarillo to remember their loved ones. This is an annual event started several years ago by Cindi Randolph, founder of Texas Bikers4Bikers, who lost her husband Walter Randolph in a motorcycle accident. Grace Church donated a wall located on the west side of the church to use as a memorial to fallen bikers. The memorial wall provides a permanent place to remember those lost who found freedom in the wind and loved to ride their motorcycles. Texas Bikers4Bikers is a non-profit ministry of Grace Church and all funds received are used to help the families of those who lost a loved one. Plaques are purchased through Texas Bikers4Bikers for $150.00 to remember your loved ones and then installed on the wall for the annual dedication. Presently, there are 70 names on the wall including the 6 that were added at this dedication. Of those named, not everyone lost their lives through a motorcycle accident, but all were loved and will always be missed and in the memory of all their loved ones, family, and friends. This year the following people were added; Brandon Scott Henriquez, Bill Hetzler, Wiley Hicks Jr., Ronald L. Howard, Mark Steven Milton, and Ervin Wright. During the dedication family and friends are given the opportunity to talk about their lost loved one and share stories how they lived and loved freedom in the wind. After the dedication, a parade is held escorted by the Amarillo Police Department, Blue Knights and the Amarillo Emergency Service. Thanks to them in making sure everyone remains safe. The parade begins and ends at the Grace Church. The dedication concludes with volunteers and staff of Grace Church providing a meal to those who attended the dedication. If anyone is interested in purchasing a plaque for next year’s dedication, or would like more information, contact Cindi Randolph at 806.354.8060 or go to TXBikers4Bikers.org. Until next time, RIDE FREE AND SAFE ALWAYS.

Coretech Saddlebags et’s face it; riding a motorcycle really restricts the ability of carrying essential items, let alone excess items. Unless you own a large bagger type bike, carrying any type of extra items becomes problematic. Like the riders of the old Wild West, motorcycle riders are dependent on saddlebags. There are many types, shapes and sizes of saddlebags available for riders; ranging from the very large hard-bags to the small sports nylon bags. I have gone through several saddlebags and I prefer flexibility and functionality; without having to have overbearing style that detracts from the lines of a bike. For this review, we will be looking at the Cortech saddlebags and optional tail bag. Style. At first sight, these bags look very slick and aerodynamic. They are shaped in a sporty tear drop manner that easily accentuates a bike’s line; as opposed to many square-shaped bags. The side logo’s are reflective and not overbearing to look at. The bags come in three basic colors of blue, red, and black. Though these bags look best on sports bikes they are just as great to look at on cruisers. Functionality & Versatility. These saddlebags are one of the most versatile and functional bags for a motorcycle around. First, they can be used as a throw over bag on the rear seat or they can be mounted under the seat for a more permanency. To ensure stability at high speeds they can be clamped down using the nylon straps with the quick detach buckles. The Cortech saddlebags are one of

those rare bags that can collapse or expand depending on how much you need to carry. Each side can carry two one-gallon milk jugs when fully expanded. Conversely they can be collapse via a zipper [much like luggage] to make them smaller and increasing the aerodynamics. The openings to the bags are large enough to accommodate almost anything. And since the bags themselves are nylon they facilitate for oddly shaped items. Hard bags are not flexible and though may have the room; may not be able to fit an odd shape item. I have used these bags for groceries, beer, and even bringing pizza home.

wall inside needs to be repaired. Again, the bag is still functional, but the divider inside is half undone.

Tail Bag Options. Probably one the best features of these saddlebags is that they can accept two optional tail bags. The first option is the deluxe bag. This bag is larger inside and can fit two days of clothes. The second is a smaller form sports tail bag. They are both interchangeable to the saddlebag system. This gives the rider the ability to easily use either bag depending on need.

Cortech Saddlebags • 1680 denier ballistic polyester construction for durability • Protective heat shield on lower section of bags helps to prevent pipe burn (minimum clearance of 2” required) • Neoprene strap and side pads help to protect the motorcycleï¾’s finish • New expandable main compartment increases carrying capacity • Zippered side pocket on each bag • Scotchlite® 3M Reflective Tour Master logo and striping • Internal support panels • Quick release mounting system • Rain covers included • Convenient carrying handles • TPR zipper pulls • Standard Dimensions: 12”H x 15”W x 7”D • Expanded Dimensions: 12”H x 15”W x 10”D • MSRP $139.99

Construction. Overall construction of these bags make them very tough and reliable. The undersides of the saddlebags have a preformed hard plastic lining that maintains the shape of the bags and protects items from exhaust pipe heat and the elements. In the extreme weather these bags have held up extremely well. In addition to the water resistant nylon construction, each bag comes with a rain shroud the surrounds the bags to provide complete rain-proofing. I do have one complaint however. The strap covers used to connect the bags to the tail-bag frayed after one year of heavy use, but they do not restrict nor inhibit the overall use. The deluxe tail bag that I got with these also did not hold up too well after one year. Though the outer shell maintained its structure; the divider

Pros: • Extremely Versatile • Large Carrying Capacity • Tail Bag Options Cons: • Relatively Expensive • Some areas need to be double stitched. Manufacturer Features:

Cortech Tri-Bag Tail Bag • Built in bungee cord mounting hooks hide away when not in use • Use tail bag or saddlebags (not included) separately or as a single unit • Easy access top loading main compartment • Angle mounted shoulder strap for easy carrying • Four exterior pockets- Two full-size zipper pockets, one rear zippered pocket, and one zipper mesh pocket • Quick-release mounting system • Lower zippered panel for Cortech Saddlebags attachment • 17.5”L x 12”W x 10”H • MSRP $99.99 Conclusion – Though they do have some stitching issues, this luggage system for motorcycles is not only appealing to look at but is also versatile. I would easily buy another set and recommend them to anyone. They have held up very well through extreme weather and I have used them to carry groceries and more. By Randy McCamey Shea Photography (SheaPhotography.com) ~See Map Next Page~ es, you read it correctly. One state highway ceased to exist all because of sex. It may also surprise you to know that you can still take a little tour on this ill-fated stretch of blacktop. Now, you probably know of some roads, streets, or areas that, through a myriad of wildly disconnected circumstances, have become associated with sex or have been given some sexual connotation. So, where is this old highway that was once connected with sex? The answer: rural central Texas. If you really want to ride the highway of sin, you and your sweetheart should take an early morning cruise west on I-20 out of Dallas/Fort Worth (or east out of Abilene). You might stop at the Smoke Stack Restaurant or New York Hill in Thurber for a good breakfast first. Who knows, it might take a little extra energy to ride the full length of what you are about to experience! Keep traveling west, then exit onto State Highway 112 at Eastland (Exit 343) where you will enter “The Twilight Zone”. Or perhaps I should say the “Psychedelic Zone” as the highway of sin was a prominent feature in Eastland County during the 1970’s and ‘80’s. Texas 112 runs past all the normal fast food stops, auto dealerships, and big box stores as you roll into downtown Eastland to the courthouse square. The square is a good place to take a break and wander around. You will find several antique stores, the Eastland county museum, and the old Majestic Theater which still operates to this day. Just down the red brick street from the Majestic is the old jailhouse and across from the jailhouse stands a lone gray granite monument that marks, sadly, the place where the last mob lynching in Texas was carried out back in 1929. Of course, there in the courthouse is the legend himself, Old Rip – the horned toad that came back to life after being sealed in the cornerstone of the old courthouse for some 30 years. Old Rip is right there on public display through a window in the courthouse.

August 2010

Highway 112 turns North at the courthouse square and is designated as North Seaman Street. No, I am not kidding! That is the actual name of the street. Also at that corner, emblazoned as a mural on the side of the building, is a tribute to the late, great motorcycle artist and illustrator, David Mann. Seaman runs about a mile, passing the municipal airport, and then the highway continues North through typical Texas farm and ranch land. About four miles further and the highway veers Northwest at the little town of Morton Valley (est. 1880). Morton Valley has always been very small (population ~40), but did have its own school between 1921 and 1949 during the oil boom in the area. Another three miles or so, just over ten miles in all, and Texas 112 terminates at US 183. When you have made it this far, pull off the side of the road, give your sweetheart a kiss, and light up that cigarette, because you will have just ridden the highway of sin, the lane of lust, and the freeway of fun. You see, the highway itself is not gone, just the state highway designation. The state of Texas has banned from use forever this state highway designation because of its sexual connotation - a connotation that caused many people to steal the road signs. In 1992, the Eastland County government determined that it would be less expensive to change the road designation than to patrol and prosecute all of the people who were stealing the signs! So, what, you ask, was this symbol of sex that everyone was after? What you have just ridden, and what is now Texas State Highway 112, was once… Texas 69. Enjoy the Ride. PS: If you are interested in getting more of your kicks on something other than Route 66, you might make a run out to East Texas where you can ride US 69 between Port Arthur and Denison. Just don’t take any of the road signs, OK?

trippers and bikes just seem to go together. But Johnny Lange made his mark on the motorcycle industry by combining the two like no other before him. Born in Oxford, England and raised near Milwaukee, he earned degrees in psychology and sociology from the University of Wisconsin, then a graduate degree from the University of South Florida. He worked in various social service positions, often visiting clients on his HarleyDavidson. He moved into the motorcycle industry in 1998 working with California Motorcycles (later to become Indian Motorcycles). From there, he worked for various small motorcycle manufacturers throughout Florida in a variety of positions. Eventually, he would create Strip Club

Choppers (SCC), based in California. SCC started in 2004 with only two T-shirt designs. Today, they taut more than 150 products on the market and work with more than a hundred dealers around the nation. SCC is best known for the world famous Pole Bike, the only bike with a full size stripper pole through the middle! It’s been featured on “The Tonight Show”, “Speed Channel”, “American Thunder”, and numerous other television shows and in print ads. Recently, Johnny teamed up with Jay Barbieri, best selling author of “The Biker’s Handbook” and the producer and host of Speed Channel’s American Thunder. And earlier this year, SCC announced the addition of Michelle Smith, former host of American Thunder who now hosts a new TV show, “Two Wheel Thunder” that premiered in June on Discovery’s HD Theater. These three icons in the motorcycle industry make an incredible team.

area complete with couches, bar stools, tables, dance poles and a state of the art sound system. This area is for show attendees to relax and get autographs from the on hand personalities. Johnny and Strip Club Choppers Roadhouse Tour are coming to Texas! They faithfully attend the larger events like Daytona and Sturgis, but they are also coming to some of the largest biker events in Texas: • August 21-23 Giant Side Motorcycle Rally GiantSideRally.com Lubbock * Panhandle • November 4-7 Lone Star Rally LoneStarRally.com Galveston * Gulf Coast

You can visit them at rallies around the nation through their Strip Club Choppers Roadhouse Tour. It’s reminiscent of a three-ring circus, complete lounge with stages, pole dancers, video monitors, live web cams, music, bar tables and a couple of choppers, including the Pole Bike. When you bring in Johnny; all bets are covered and a party is certain! Brand new this year is a VIP (Very Important Patron) 400 square foot lounge

ome activists you like; some you don’t. You believe in some of what they fight for, but there are things with which you don’t agree. Regardless of which side you may be on, you have to admire what my grandmother called the “fire in their belly” – the sense of duty that they have taken on themselves, without another authority putting it upon them. Bill “Sputnik” Strain was just such a man… an activist for the motorcycle community whom many, like ourselves never got to meet. But he fought for our rights as riders – all of us. We had planned to meet Sputnik at an upcoming rally. We have spoken with him on the phone. We have worked with his staff, especially the group in Houston, to get messages out to the mass of motorcyclists in Texas about their freedom and rights as riders. But we had never gotten to sit down with him… and we most definitely feel like we missed out. On June 24, 2010, at the age of 70, Texas lost the strongest driving force behind protecting our rights as riders. Ask a motorcyclist about wearing a helmet and you’ll get a spirited reply regardless of which side of the coin they land. Yet, most of the motorcyclists on the road (more than 450,000 registered bikes and more than 825,000 licensed riders in the state of Texas), aren’t even aware of the driving force behind the constant battle for motorcyclist rights… and are probably less aware of the fact that we have lost a huge part of that driving force. Regardless if you agreed with his approach, you have to admire the fervor with which he fought… that “fire in his belly.”

For the last eighteen years, Sputnik was a fixture in Austin, earning admiration and respect from even the most conservative of lawmakers. In 1992, Sputnik founded the Texas Motorcycle Rights Association (TMRA). Among many achievements, this warrior talked Texas out of a mandatory helmet law for adults, got handicap license plates for motorcycles, and changed the law to allow bikers to carry concealed weapons. He is well known for encouraging rider training, mostly from fighting for the $8 and license fee motorcyclists pay to be placed in a special fund to directly pay for such training. One of his most obvious achievements, and will be a long-time living memorial to his efforts, is “Legislative Day.” Sputnik realized that most people don’t talk to their legislators; they don’t know how and have no idea how to set up to do so. So he helped create this single day, every two years (the Texas Legislature only meets in odd-numbered years) set aside for bikers to join their brothers and sisters in Austin and sit down and talk with our legislators, en mass. In 2009, over 2,000 motorcyclists descended on the Capitol to personally speak with our representatives about issues important to riders. Watch for news (TMRA2.org), as the next Legislative Day is right around the corner, in January 2011. On July 10, 2010, hundreds of bikers from across Texas started out at the VFW Post 8787 in Austin. They followed the Black Diamond Motorcycle Hearse, holding the ashes of Sputnik in a small wooden box with emblems of the flag and eagle. The memorial ride ended at the pink granite steps of the capitol building, where a memorial service

bonded those gathered to pay respects to a fallen warrior. It has been said that the American Biker is the last warrior for American Freedoms. Regardless of what you have been led to believe, Sputnik fought for our rights and freedoms – impacting far beyond just the biker community and effecting more than just Texas laws. TMRA continues that fight and you can get involved. Everyone has the right to go up to their Legislator and voice their opinion. Sputnik didn’t just believe that to be a right, he believed it to be a higher responsibility and he took it very seriously. He will be missed by his TMRA family and friends. His legacy will have a ripple effect for many years to come and not just in Texas.

Few folks will leave as lasting a mark as this man. Thanks for fighting for all of us. Thanks for everything.

Sputnik was my friend, my mentor, my brother. I will remember his words of wisdom with a smile.

~ Michael

As a TMRA2 Task Force Member, Sputnik was my Mentor… I would listen to everyone of his words wishing I could remember only half of what this man had forgotten… I would do anything for him… He was a very canny person and had quite a funny personality, oh & he just loved to give nicknames to people…. I was blessed to be able to get to know him as a friend… I will see you on the other side my Brother until then Ride on Those Wings…. ~ David Die Page 36

EVENT

IT’ S O N A GA I N! By Shelly Horan, Editor Photos by Silver Lion Photography Studios

Dennis Hinson and his team at Team Motorjam have experience with special events such as The Great Texas Mud Race, motocross events, and concerts. After working with Dennis for years, the Nacogdoches Exposition Center asked if he’d be interested in organizing a motorcycle rally. Not new to motorcycles, but new to running a multi-day event, he decided he would go in cautiously and build the event up slowly. In 2009 this new rally burst onto the scene as a HUGE success. Located in “oldest down in Texas,” historic Nacogdoches, the Oldest Town in Texas (OTT) Rally expected around 1,000 attendees, but broke the 5,000 mark… and with “iffy” weather. The 2010 OTT Rally will once again feature the Harley’s Angels Charity Poker Run; biker games; burnout contest; custom bike show (free entry); freestyle streetbike exhibitions feature Team Stunters; celebrity bike builders such as Troy Nicholson of Lightning Cycle Works; Blessing of the Bikes on Sunday by the Christian Motorcyclist Association; a variety of vendors; food; drink; and the OTT BBQ Cook Off. Also back this year is the historic downtown parade on Saturday. And not to be stagnant with what they do, OTT has announced that everyone who registers and participates in the downtown parade will be entered into a CASH drawing and a chance to win a lifetime OTT Rally pass! The bikini contest was very popular in 2009, so it’s back – free entry with $500 in cash and prizes. Sponsored by Budweiser, Texas Thunder Harley-Davidson, Thunder Roads Texas Motorcycle Magazine and the Texas Lottery, this year’s rally is slated to be even more successful. This rally organizer really listens to riders. They’ve listened to the feedback from last year’s rally and are moving the music outside where the action is and they’re keeping it Texan! You asked for him, you got him – headlining Saturday night is Mean Gene Kelton and the Diehards. Another Texas favorite, and one kiss butt guitar picker, Wes Jeans joins the line up with his rockin’ Texas blues. Returning this year with high demand is The Alan Fox Band. Also returning this year are Alex Hunter and Glen Lenderman. Ride the beautiful roads of the East Texas Piney Woods! Full of historic places, there is no loss of offsite destinations… but be sure to get back for the activities, vendors, and live music on the rally grounds! Stay onsite for the after-party! RV hookups with electric are only $50 for the weekend (two nights), tent camping under the pavilion is only $15 per night, and all non-hookup campers and tents are FREE. There are also local hotels offering special deals. Permanent restroom facilities are available on the grounds. At only $30 for the weekend, it is one of the most budget-friendly rallies available. The weekend pass gives you access to all onsite activities during the weekend. Pre-registration is open NOW. If you register online, you’ll receive a FREE rally T-shirt. Online pre-registration is open now and closes at midnight September 3, 2010. You can purchase tickets at the rally – still only $30, but the freel T-shirt is good for pre-registration only. Check out OTTRally.com for more information and to pre-register for the rally!

One Ride, Two Nations United in Remembrance of Our Fallen Heroes By Shelly Horan, Editor

Last year, we brought you a story about a small group of riders paying respects to fallen British military men interred in a Texas cemetery. George Sherman, a member of both the American Legion Riders and the Royal British Legion Riders, was informed about a ride in the United Kingdom, honoring American military buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery. He was asked by the founders of that ride if he wanted to coordinate something on this “side of the pond” and he enthusiastically said “yes.” The Allied Memorial Remembrance Ride (Allied Ride or AMRR) was born. Last year, about 60 riders participated here in Texas, while over 200 participated in the UK. This year, more than 200 Texas riders saddled up to head from Benbrook with stops in Collins, Bonnie and then Terrell, picking up riders along the way. On the same day, July 3, more than 200 motorcyclists hit the roads about 60 miles outside of London, heading for Cambridge.

Americans in Cambridge… The Cambridge American Cemetery is one of fourteen permanent American World War II military cemetery memorials erected on foreign soil. More than 3,800 American servicemen and women are buried there. Many were crew members of British-based American aircraft. Some died in the invasion of North Africa and France, in the training areas of the United Kingdom, and in the waters

British in Texas… with the outbreak of World War II, British Royal Air Force (RAF) officials wanted to train aircrews outside of England, safe from enemy attack. In the United States, six schools were set up, dedicated to instructing RAF pilots. The first such school was located in Terrell, Texas – No. 1 British Flying Training School (BFTS). Most of these students had never been in an airplane, much less even driven an automobile. By the end of the war, more than 2,000 cadets trained at Terrell, forming a lasting

biker is riding along a country lane, when a sparrow flies up in front of him. The biker can’t do anything and hits the sparrow. As he looks in his rear view mirror, he sees the sparrow lying in the road. Being the kind of guy he is, he stops, picks up the sparrow and takes it home and puts it in a cage, still in a coma. When the sparrow wakes up the following morning, he looks through the bars of the cage and says, “Shit, I must have killed the biker”.

I thought what you were wearing five minutes ago was fine, too. Either pair of shoes is fine. With the belt or without it, looks fine. Your hair is fine. You look fine. biker arrived at his bro’s house to get ready for the big run that weekend. His thoughts were on the run as he walked up to the porch, he couldn’t help but notice the huge dog sitting next to the door. When his bro answered the door he asked, “Is that your dog?” “Yea, I got him for the ol’ lady,” was the response. “No kidding. I always kept my mouth shut ‘bout your ol’ lady but, I gotta say… nice trade!”

nerd was walking down the sidewalk one day when his friend, another nerd, rode up on an incredible shiny new motorcycle. The first nerd was stunned by his friend’s sweet ride and asked, “WOW! Where did you get such a nice bike?” The second nerd replied, “Well, yesterday I was walking home, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up to me on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, ‘Take what you want!’” The second nerd nodded approvingly, “Good choice. The clothes probably wouldn’t have fit.”

t was George the mailman’s last day on the job after 35 years of carrying the mail through all kinds of weather to the same neighborhood. When he arrived at the first house on his route, he was greeted by the whole family who congratulated him and sent him on his way with a tidy gift envelope. At the second house, they presented him with a box of fine cigars. The folks at the third house handed him a selection of terrific fishing lures. At the fourth house, he was met at the door by a strikingly beautiful woman in a revealing negligee. She took him by the hand, gently led him through the door, which she closed behind him, and took him up the stairs to the bedroom where she blew his mind with the most passionate love he had ever experienced. When he had enough, they went downstairs and she fixed him a giant breakfast: eggs, potatoes, ham, sausage, blueberry waffles, and fresh-squeezed orange juice. When he was truly satisfied, she poured him a cup of steaming coffee. As she was pouring, he noticed a dollar bill sticking out from under the cup’s bottom edge. “All this was just too wonderful for words,” he said, “But what’s the dollar for?” “Well,” she said, “Last night, I told my husband that today would be your last day, and that we should do something special for you. I asked him what to give you. He said, ‘Screw him. Give him a dollar.’ “

A

police officer pulled over two nuns riding on a motorcycle, and said to the rider, “Ma’am, you’re driving much too slowly, could you please drive faster?”

And the nun says, “Oh, I saw the sign with the ‘21’ and assumed the speed limit was 21 MPH” The officer explains: “No ma’am, the speed limit is 80. The highway number is Interstate 21.” Then the police officer look at the passenger and see the other nun shaking like a leaf. “Excuse me sister, but what’s wrong with your passenger?” “Oh, that’s probably because we just got off Highway 205.”

A

biker was riding on a hot sunny day. He wanted to find a biker bar to drink a cold beer. As he pulled in this little town he noticed some choppers and some bikers at this little bar. So he pulls in and goes in to have a beer. He noticed a lot of bikers wearing patches and some wearing their colors. Some of these guys really looked bad. As he went in the bar he decided he better take his gun. He parked his bike right in by the front door. Some of the bikers in there decided to mess with him a little bit. He decided he better let them know he was tough too. He ordered him a beer and decided to walk outside to check on his bike. Wow, it was gone, not there. He walks back inside and pulls his gun, fires one shot in the wooden post in there. He got everyone’s attention. He says “Hey look here. My damn bike is missing outside and when I finish my beer and go back outside it better be there right where I left it. I don’t want to have to do what I did at the last bar where I was.” He sits down and the bikers got real quiet. The bartender goes over to him and says, “What did you do at the last bar about your bike?” The biker says, “I’ll tell you when I check on my bike and it better be back right where I left it.” So he finishes his beer and walks outside to check on his bike. Wow, it was back and right where he parked it. He walks back into the Bar and says, “I’ll being leaving now. You guys have a good day. “ Bartender calls out, “Hey wait a minute, what did you do at the last bar when your bike was missing? The biker says, “I had to call a taxi.”
