It’s September and all kinds of thoughts and emotions are looming as we head towards the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack on America. Few of us will forget where we were and what we were doing that day as the news unfolded and the realization struck… we’ve been attacked on our own soil. On the cover, we are pleased to feature “Bob”, a tribute bike to Flight #93 that went down in a field in Pennsylvania. Read more about the bike and reminiscences from our staff about that day (page 36). We have treated our cover article this month as a tribute to that day... May we never forget. This month we say “good bye” to Elm “Scout” Valle as a monthly feature writer (page 12). He will be missed. He has promised to write and submit articles when he can, remaining a TRT Correspondent. We wish him all the luck as he continues to build his consulting business. A new writer is coming onboard next month. The space will still be used for product/service reviews. We’ll be introducing her in our Web-zine (email), Facebook, and on our website before the October issue hits the shelves. In August, our local biker community, along with riders from Louisiana and other parts of Texas, staged a counter-protest at Ellington Base (southeast Houston). More than 300 riders bombarded the street across the Ellington, as a small group from Westboro Baptist Church attempted to protest the Coast Guard base there. We appreciate everyone’s effort to thwart off unwanted messages to our service men and women – hats off! (See page 20.) In these hard economic times, please make plans to attend the various events around Texas this fall and visit your local shops and haunts. It is important to support the Texas motorcycle community – now more than ever. You don’t’ have to spend a lot – but if you need something, don’t hold off either. Our community is full of smaller businesses that are truly having a hard time keeping doors open. And when visiting – make sure our advertisers know you saw them in Thunder Roads… it’ll help us keep our doors open, too! Ride safe... and ride with THUNDER ! Where Were You? know where I was. I will never forget! Every minute of that horrible day is etched in my brain forever. I vowed to never forget. And for the rest of my life it will always be a painful memory of the day America was attacked! This is my story. I was working as a manager for Chili’s Restaurants and just happened to be at the location in downtown Fort Worth. I walked in the building at 8:00 a.m. to start my day. I had a small ritual that I repeated every morning and I no reason to believe this morning would be any different. Boy would I be wrong! Around 8:30 a.m. I sat down at the bar and put all my reports in front of me. Poured me a cup of coffee and turned on the news. The only concern I had was to make a good business plan for the day. As I poured over prep sheets and sales projection I listened to the news in the background. It seemed like it was a normal news day… nothing to even make me look up at the screen. At 8:46 a.m. The first plane hit the North Tower of The World Trade Center. It did not take long before a special report broke into the news and showed the smoke pouring from the building. I was watching Fox 4 News and you could tell that they came on to the report so soon they had no idea the magnitude of what they were about to cover. First thing I heard them say was that they believed a small plane had accidently crashed into the tower. To me it looked like that little plane was not so little! My eyes were glued to the screen. This was huge! How the hell did someone accidently run into a massive building! Then it happened! My eyes were locked onto the screen already! But out of the left side of the screen as clear as day a plane! Not just any plane! A massive commercial airliner came into the screen. It looked like it was traveling a thousand miles per hour. I knew what was about to happen the very second I saw the plane! I screamed at the top of my lungs the moment it hit the building! My hands went up to cover my face in shock and terror. I remember having a thousand thoughts go through my head all at one time. Oh my God !It was crystal clear to me without

any news reporter confirming a thing that we were under attack. As the plane slammed into the tower it seems as if the TV went silent. The reporter asked in a soft voice if that was a second plane he had just witnessed hitting the other tower. I was still screaming that it was another plane! It was another plane! It was another plane! I must have said it a dozen times! At that very moment I also realized I was alone in the building. I never felt so alone in my life. I just could not believe what was happening. My heart grew heavier by the minute because it was a fact that many people had just lost their lives. I felt a since of helplessness because it was over. There was nothing you could do but watch in horror!

only speak for myself but the events of that day made me so much more of an American. The American flag took on all its glory and what it represents. Songs about freedom and the American way had so much more meaning. I am so proud to be an American! I am so blessed to have been born in this country. I have all the respect in the world for all the different agencies that work hard every day and risk their lives so that I can live in peace! And I pray to God for all people that suffered on September 11th 2001.

I called my wife and woke her up to tell her what was going on. I remember her saying “what” about three times. This could not be real. As time went by my staff started arriving to work and joined me in front of the TV. Nothing seemed to be important except watching this story unfold. At times I did realize that I was in a downtown environment. Pretty soon I got a call from the powers-that-be and told me not to shut our doors… that people were going to need somewhere to eat. It’s funny, I was not really concerned about that. Every time you thought this story could not get worse it did. One after another the two towers crumbled to the ground. It was like watching a war movie and desperately wanting it to end! We did stay open for business but not many people came in for lunch that day. Most of the buildings in downtown were evacuated. For the first time in years you really were not sure what was about to happen. You felt unsafe! It was a feeling that most of my generation had never felt before. I actually went out on the sidewalk a few times that day and looked up at the high rises and just wondering “what if”. It was a scary thought. This is my story of what happened to me that day! My heart pours out for the people that had a closer encounter with the events that happened on that September day. I can

Lights, Camera, Action! iding a motorcycle is not for everyone and often times it is deemed very dangerous for those who never have been on one. Despite its bad reputation, every biker whether it is cruiser or sports, wants to be able to share the joy of riding a motorcycle. How many times has this happened: “Jump on – I’ll take you for a ride so you can feel how it is on a bike.”

• 1 Waterproof Quick-Release Housing (180’/60 m) • 1 Headlamp-Style Head Strap • 1 Vented Helmet Strap • 2 Curved, 3M™ Adhesive Mounts

“No Thanks – it’s too scary and dangerous.” Ah, if only everyone knew the freedom and joy that comes from the ride. But with the advent of technology, you can share your experiences from your point of view. There are two great viable solutions on the market today that shoot high definition video as you carve those curves or simply take a relaxing cruise. First on the list is the GoPro HERO Camera. The GoPro Hero was developed and used in professional applications such as race cars, motocross, skiing, and even skydiving. The HD HERO is both a wearable and vehicle mounted camera that captures full HD video in a Point of View (POV) fashion. The video is true HD at a maximum of 1080p resolution and 30-60 frames per second. Recording time varies depending on the SD memory card used but can capture up to 2.5 hours on a single charge and up to 9 hours total on a 32GB SD card (not included). Additionally, the GoPro HERO can shoot digital stills with a maximum resolution of 5 Megapixels (MP). A neat feature of the HERO is that you can actually set still photograph intervals at 2/5/10/30 or 60 seconds; with each interval taking a still shot. The GoPro HERO Camera comes in five different options; the HD HERO 960 model being the cheapest at $179.99 and the most expensive being the HD Helmet Hero models priced at $299.99. “Helmet camera mount options include a headlamp style head strap that you can quickly share with your friends, a lace-through strap-mount for vented helmets, two curved and two flat adhesive mounts for attaching to gear, vehicles or whatever else moves you. The HD Helmet HERO is compatible with all other GoPro HERO camera mounts & accessories, so it’s very easy to expand the functionality of your camera to attach with a suction cup to vehicles, clamp to bike handlebars and seat posts, mount to surfboards, and can even be worn on the wrist or chest.” The GoPro Hero camera is one tough cookie with the ability to be waterproof to 180 feet depths. It is also shockproof, and due to its removable polycarbonate housing, can withstand drops, rocks, and brush. A great feature of the GoPro is that not only the video quality is great, but the audio is also excellent. It has a built in microphone with an automatic gain control and boasts 48-kHZ audio compression. Additionally, the GoPro has a lithium-ion rechargeable battery with a build in battery warmer for those cold days. Lastly, the GoPro has a superb line of accessories and mounts from Night Vision Mounts to a 3D HERO System that allows you to capture all your videos in 3D to show off to all your friends!!! How cool is that!? This is what you get for the $299 Helmet Hero Camera: • 1 HD HERO Camera (5 megapixel) • 1 Rechargeable 1100 mAh Lithium-Ion Battery Page 12

• 2 Flat, 3M Adhesive Mounts • 1 Three-Way Pivoting Side Arm Assembly • 2 Quick-Release Buckles • 1 USB Cable • 1 Component Video (HDTV) Cable • 1 Composite Video + Audio Out Cable • Warranty: One Year Another camera new to the market is the Drift HD Action Camera. One big advantage of this camera is that it smaller and easier to mount than the GoPro. Like its rival, the Drift HD boasts full 1080p videos, but only has 2 video settings as opposed to the GoPro’s three. However, the Drift HD has a lot of features that is not necessarily better but different. The Drift HD can shoot in a wide angle at a full 170 degrees. It takes still shots at 9MP (opposed to the 5MP from GoPro). Other features include: • A playback LCD screen for lining up shots and the ability to play back the footage right away • Micro HDMI connector for HDTV playback • A remote control to enable you to film what you want to record, not the boring stuff in between • New goggle strap in addition to curved and flat adhesive mounts, paired with a universal clip for multiple mounting options • A rotating lens so you can mount the camera at any angle and any position to get that shot you are looking for • You can pair the remote control to your camera or any number of additional cameras. • A digital zoom function so you can get even closer to the action or your friend in front • A 2.5 microphone input for external microphones • Night mode so you can record in darker and duskier conditions • External power pack accessory offering (20 hrs. record time) While the GoPro is the veteran of the two cameras, Drift HD has actually added all these new features and took it a step further. However all these feature make it more

expensive than the GoPro; priced at $339 or more. My personal opinion is that I prefer the HD Action Camera for motorcycles as it is smaller and has multiple mount points. The GoPro is better for cars and larger vehicles, but both will work well as a helmet mount. This is what is included for the price: • • • • • • • • • •

HD Action Camera Remote Control Spare rear cover Goggle Mount Curved and Flat adhesive mounts Universal Clip Velcro Strap Lithium Battery USB Cable Quick Guide to get started

I do like the fact that the Drift HD is very much self contained with its own LCD screen and being waterproof by itself. The remote control is pretty neat, too. Conclusion: Both cameras are very nice options for that rider who wants to capture POV videos to share with others. Each one has its own advantage (such as the 3D video for GoPro and the remote control for the Drift HD). These two cameras are definitely a step up from the 640x320 resolution camera I was using. The full HD 1080p brings out the life and captures the true experience of the rider. Both are readily available through Amazon.com or even Best Buy. But for more information on these two products visit DriftInnovation.com or GoPro.com. I want to thank Thunder Roads Texas, Bob and Shelly, and all the TRT magazine readers out there. This will be my last sign out as I am leaving the TRT family as a regular writer, due to life changes. I will however be writing once in a great while. I appreciate all the support and fun times. Take care of yourselves and each other! This is the Scout’s Report signing out and “See you on the high ground!”

Picking Our Battles Wisely Terri Williams, TMRA2 Legislative Task Force

fter this session was over we had several bikers asking, what we are working on next session. Some think we should take on a laundry list of different bills in an all out effort to change whatever we want. Unfortunately the political process doesn’t work that way. When a large company hires a full time lobbyist at the capitol, they pick one bill, maybe two, for the lobbyist to work the entire session. That’s it. The lobbyist will also have a full time paid staff to help them with whatever they need. The bigger the Company, the bigger the issue, the more money poured into the effort of passing the bill. There is a reason for that. Passing legislation when you are knee deep in activists, advocates, and lobbyists here in Texas is like standing in line at the emergency room. Whoever is considered most important, whoever knows the representatives personally, and those who are favored by them are the ones that get legislation introduced. If the Senators do not know you or like you, they will not give you the time of day… period.

This last bill we helped passed into law, HB3324 Fusion Center Privacy Policy, was the first full blown civil rights bill passed in Texas in three decades. Instead of having one bill introduced, we had three different legislators introduce it, which is unheard of. It was the only constitutional bill the TMRA2 ever worked on in 20 years that had unanimous votes in both the Senate and House, on all levels of the bill. It was the “perfect storm” of a bill. Before next session, at the TMRA2 general membership meeting, we will discuss ideas for bills to introduce next session (2013). Each idea is presented and then we vote on the most important two or three subjects to work on. That doesn’t mean we won’t have surprise issues to work on as well once the session starts. And there are always many bills to kill down there. To put our work in perspective to the national statistics, Texas is the only motorcycle rights state in the US that has consistently passed legislation into law for the last 20 years. There are four or five other states that were successful these last few years introducing new laws. But we remain the leader in what we do, which is

a testimony to our rights groups and officers who stomp the halls banding together for the greater cause. With the US Defenders, COIR, ABATE, TMRA2 and other groups working together for motorcycle rights, we pick and choose our battles wisely. We have a new state rally as a major annual fundraiser. Losing the support of Lost Prairie Cycles Ranch (Groesbeck) means losing $30,000 a year in funding that we’re trying to replace. Jim’s Cycle Shop in Axtell graciously offered to host this 1st Annual Take Back Texas Rally (October 7-9, 2011). Entertainment includes six bands playing everything from Classic Rock to Country: The Sophisticants (Classic and Rock), Goodbye Deadly (Rock), End Effect (metal), Wasted Aces (Classic Rock), Dr. Shames Love Circus (Rock), and IMI (Rock). Of course, what rally isn’t complete without bike games, vendors, Jello wrestling, auctions, 50/50 drawing, horse shoe tournament, bike show, great food, and more. Preregister now on the web site atTakeBackTexasRally.com. We need everyone’s help to make this happen. We would like to see all active TMRA2 members buy a ticket online. We have hundreds of members and if each buys a ticket the rally will be paid for and all the rest of the proceeds will go to the TMRA2 State Office to keep us going. There are RV spots and Vendor spots open at a good price and are we need sponsors as well. Come on out, have fun, and support a good cause. For more info on the Texas Motorcycle Rights Association visit TMRA2.org.

EVENT

Each bill has to be drafted by the Legislative Council at the capitol to conform and update the current law. So you can have an attorney or representative write the bill initially, but the Council has the final say on wording; especially if the bill involves law enforcement and changing current laws like the biker bills we usually work on. There are 132

representatives and 32 senators in Texas. Each bill takes an average of 500 visits to representatives and senators before you can get a yes vote. You have to initially distribute the bill to each office and explain it to either the representative or their political analyst. That’s 164 visits just for round one. You then have to go back again (round two) to each office who has not given a yes vote on the bill; usually after the committee hearings have completed. Then there is round three, four, and five until everyone signs off on the bill at all levels.

Support Our Wounded Warriors on September 24 Story: John “JohnnyD” Darner Pictures Jeannine Muilenberg

T

he Texas Honor Ride (THR) is holding our 6th Annual Main Fundraiser Saturday, September 24, 2011 benefitting our Wounded Troops. It will be hosted by the West Conroe Baptist Church on North Loop 336 just off of I-45 and Highway 105. Registration opens at 0800 (8:00 a.m.) and the opening ceremony starts at 0915 (9:15 a.m.). The ceremony includes an air show by Freedom Flight. Apache and Life Flight helicopters that fly in will be on display during the event, along with the Texas Fallen Heroes Wall from Iraq and Afghanistan.

staff and counselors administer the funds to our wounded. They work with them daily and know the needs of expenses the families need to support them. These family members put their lives on hold and spend months and even years away from home with many expenses to do so. This is where the Texas Honor Ride comes in, to assist the families so they may help with the rehabilitation of our wounded warriors.

This year’s fundraiser will feature the famous Blue Knights police escorted “Ride to Nowhere” through the scenic Piney Woods. Kickstands go up at 1000 (10:00am) at the church. After the ride there will be live music, food (BBQ), entertainment, displays, and live and silent auctions. We will have a car and a bike show with trophies for the winners. There will be wounded soldiers and their families in attendance as our VIP guests for you to meet. The Wounded Warriors in attendance will judge the car and bike show. Our store will be there with great THR merchandise. All proceeds raised go to support our wounded soldiers at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). BAMC is one of two military trauma hospitals for critically wounded soldiers and is the military’s burn trauma center. Wounded soldiers can be at BAMC for months and even years receiving treatment for their wounds. Our sup-port for our wounded troops is needed today more so than ever. The number of wounded has continued to grow this year with the war in Afghanistan. The funds raised by the Texas Honor Ride go to the Warrior and Family Support Center (WFSC) at BAMC where the

Our efforts are a first line of charitable support available to our wounded soldiers and their families. Once a wounded soldier arrives at BAMC their families are encouraged to come and help with their loved one’s recovery. Loud Pipes Show Respect By Laura Benson, Correspondent

n July 17, 2011, the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) issued a press release announcing they were heading to Houston to protest the US Coast Guard station at Ellington Field. If you are unfamiliar with the WBC, I won’t give their cause too much space, as they’re not worth it. Suffice to say, they are a small, group (about 70; mostly same-family members), from Topeka, Kansas. They are not recognized as part of the Baptist Convention or any other Baptist association. Severely anti-homosexual, they’ve become best known for using events, such as military funerals, celebrity funerals, gay pride gatherings, high profile political gatherings, etc., to garner media attention. Additionally, the WBC pushes the envelope and may bait groups to take action against them which, in turn, could result in the church bringing lawsuits against towns that they believe did not offer them adequate protection.

O

Because of this desire for media attention, some didn’t even want their name mentioned here. However, in the event some readers are unaware of their organization, we felt it necessary. But… this is all the information we’ll impart about the group. We choose, rather, to focus on the Texas bikers’ successful counter-protest on August 6, 2011.

The idea of a counter-protest started when Gary Davis, a Patriot Guard Rider (PGR), mentioned to some friends that the Westboro Baptist Church was planning to protest our military service men and women at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base, the home base of the Texas Air National Guard 147th Reconnaissance Wing. One of the good folks listening was a little dynamo of a lady named Kathryn McNeil, partner of Ray Kelton (yes, our own “Mean” Gene’s brother and Joni’s brother-in-law). Kathryn started rallying fellow bikers and groups on the internet, starting a group on FaceBook called “Bikers With a Cause”. Their call to action: “Ride safe, Ride aware, Ride for those in need of care.” Membership seemed to mushroom very quickly! What started out as a group of friends riding out for something they all believed in was growing by leaps and bounds. But Kathryn knew what needed to be done and what she didn’t know - she was determined to find out. She visited the city secretary’s office, then the permit office in downtown Houston, met with the Houston Police Department (HPD) and the Houston Airport System (HAS), and worked 24/7 on the internet responding and rallying everyone to team up. All the while, grassroots groups from all around Texas and

adjoining states were planning to ride in and join! It was a great group effort and everyone pitched in. Tom “Nubs” Reff, Freedom Cruisers Chapter 44 President said, “I would like to thank you for doing an article on this. It was a great turn out, many more than I expected! I headed up a group of about 60 people that all met at I-45 and Edgebrook. It started out as a meeting place for my club members but after seeing that a large group led by Kim Collins from Conroe was coming down I decided to make it a meeting place for anyone that wanted to ride to the American Legion Post 490. From there we met up with hundreds of others. Thanks to the American Legion for letting us use their place. And a special thanks to Kathryn McNeil for putting the whole thing together. She rallied people from Austin and some from Louisiana! Thanks to our military for risking their lives every day to protect this great country we live in.” The American Legion South Houston Post 490 is located across from the main entrance to Ellington Field. They were so generous to allow the group to use their facilities. The day of the ride, Kathryn was escorted out of the American Legion by a plain clothed officer to meet with HPD and HAS to coordinate what was going to happen. They discussed

how to best handle the surprisingly large crowd. A rolling ride was agreed upon, as were anti-protesters rules to be obeyed. Kathryn did the briefing, outlined the rules, and requested a pastor to say a prayer. She had printed out all the regulations, permits, and rules for participants. Kathryn is a Registered Nurse (RN) and knew the Texas heat would be a huge factor that day. She and Ray purchased all the water and Gatorade along with frozen rags; a very generous donation, considering the numbers. Once they arrived onsite, Kathryn walked the white picket line to assure no one was arrested. That was no small feat when one of the protesters began spitting on and having her young child step on the American flag. But Kathryn was the voice of reason and pointed out the leader is a disbarred lawyer known to use the court system to sue. Our biker community showed good sense and would not rise to the bait. At least 344 riders showed up to support our service men and women and drown out the hate spouted by the protesters with patriotic songs and LOUD PIPES! Coast Guard helicopters were flying overhead with service men and women waving at the bikers below... smiling at the massive show of support! Red white and blue and the American flags waving proudly against the clear blue sky literally brought a patriotic tear to my eye and I’m not ashamed so say it! It was truly a sight to behold! Although they had legal permission to protest for two hours, they literally turned tail and ran for their vehicles after only 28 minutes. They were escorted away under police protection. As they ran away they must have heard the cheers and sounds of joyous laughter from the crowd! Thank goodness our biker community has the gumption to stand up to them! As “Nubs” Reff said, “I can’t believe that a so-called church would ever protest anything let alone the military. The same

Texas-based, Texas-focused, Texas PROUD!

military that fights for our freedom… the same freedom that allows them to protest!” Another counterprotester, Linda Hargrave Chambers said, “I do not feel that I gave them attention. I gave them my backside or left side, as I drove by. My red, white, and blue was waving proudly in the air as I drove right past them… as if to say… go home, you are not welcome here, you can’t win here. This is Texas, U-S-of-A!” Kathryn McNeil modestly downplays all her hard work. What most folks do not know, and she seldom says, she has Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Lupus, and is a 22-year breast cancer survivor. Kathryn and Ray are members of the Harley’s Angels, Rolling Thunder, and the United American Riders. I personally felt great pride as an American Biker to see the outpouring of love shown to our American service men and women. That is what this gathering was all about!

9/11 Memorial - San Antonio

RIDE

T

his month, we’re dedicating our pages to the tragedy of 9/11. As such, we offer you this ride map. While it includes a few nice rides, the ultimate destination is the 9/11 Memorial in San Antonio. We start the ride in Tarpley, about 65 miles northwest of San Antonio (12 southwest of Bandera). A small, but very charming town at the junction of Farm roads 462 and 470 on Williams Creek. While small, there is Mac & Ernie’s Roadside Eatery. This used to basically be a shack on the side of the road offering good eats to weary travelers. You would walk up, order your food, and sit in the shade of the trees to eat or take it with you. After being featured in

MAP

Some of the information is provided by MotorcycleRoads.us; your one-stop resource for great motorcycle roads in the US. the premiere episode of Diners, Dive-Ins and Dives (Food Network), they have upgraded and even added a dining room. The original shack is now the main entrance. They are known for their Cabrito Burger – a must try! Take Farm road 462 South toward Hondo. This is the county seat of Medina, moving from Castroville in 1892. The word “hondo” is Spanish for “deep creek”. The town’s heyday was in World War II, when the Hondo Army Airfield was established on 3,675 acres of land there. The 600 buildings on the base were built in less than 90 days. The base itself shut was shut down in 1946, but civilian contract flight training and pilot screening programs continued.

There is no real connection between the city and the 1953 movie based on the short story “The Gift of Cochise” by Louis L’Amour. (The book “Hondo” was a novelization of the film, also written by L’Amour.) However, L’Amour spent some time in Texas after his family moved to Oklahoma and some theorize he picked the name up from here afterall. Out of Hondo, take Highway 90 East toward Castroville. You’ll go through the small town of Dunlay. While there is nothing much to stop and see, it’s fun to note that they hold the “most aliases” of Texas towns, with no fewer than six alternate names since the 1880’s.

historic district. Many of the 97 historical American building can be seen on a walking tour. Also a good stop is the Henri Castro homestead and the Landmark Inn.

Castroville, on the other hand, is worth a “stopand-see”. Full of history and historical markers. The town is named for Henri Castro (born in Bayonne, France to Jewish parents of Portuguese descent), with whom the Republic of Texas negotiated an empresario (land grant) contract in 1842. The small town became known as “little Alsace” – Alsace being a northeast France dialect of French. Castro set the town up based on European villages and visitors of the 1850’s experienced more of a European feeling, rather than rural Texas. Today, Castroville is both a national and Texas

The memorial was dedicated on the second anniversary, September 11, 2003. During the ceremony, six wreaths were laid within the walls for the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Police Officers and Fire Fighters.

From here, you’ll continue on Highway 90 East to San Antonio and the 9/11 Memorial commemorating the innocent lives lost that day. Let’s Roll... A Tribute to 9/11

By Shelly Horan, TRT Editor

O

n September 11, 2001, we all know what happened, so I won’t cover that day’s events here. I couldn’t even if I tried… whole books have been written and I only have a couple of pages. This year will mark the 10th Anniversary of this horrible attack on America. What I, we, would like to do is take you back to that day and simply remember. Remember the almost 3,000 lives lost, remember the fear and dread of the day, remember the heroes of that day, and most importantly, remember the resilience we saw in this nation. We came together as one. Horrible as the day was, we saw a resurrection of national pride – regardless of race, creed, religion or otherwise. We saw the resurrection of national fortitude – a nation united. As with any such huge catastrophic event, most can remember what we were doing. We all have lingering memories that stop us in our tracks… and I’m sure this September 11th will be tough for everyone with loved ones either in the military or are first responders. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all. As our own memorial, we offer you some reminiscences from our staff and invite you to post your memories on our Facebook page. Also if you are aware of any memorial events for that day, even non-motorcycle, we invite you to post that as well. Bob Cooney (CEO/Co-owner) I remember that morning very well. I had just dressed for work and walked into the living room of my California home. The TV was on and I immediately saw the horrible images of the first tower on fire. Not being able to believe my eyes I thought that a commercial flight had gone terribly astray and flew into the building. I sat down, glued to the TV listening to the commentator announce they thought this was a result of terrorism. I felt disbelief being replaced with anger, then by sadness. Then as if the first building was not bad enough, I saw the second plane crash into the second tower. The world seemed to stop, something that lasted for several days. Nothing since Pearl Harbor, has effected this country in such a dramatic manner. Shelly Horan (Editor/Co-Owner) “I was at a marketing conference halfway across the US in Florida. I shared the expense of renting a car with three others to get home. We met all kinds of folks just trying to get home. What I remember most – driving past the Miami airport heading out and then arriving at Intercontinental airport in Houston when we got home. The sight of all the planes grounded and the realization that not all planes flying our skies are on the ground at one time – the rest are in the air. So driving by these massive beasts just lined up wherever there was space was ominous and rather foreboding.” Kitti Kluna (correspondent) “Approximately three weeks later when it was determined safe to fly…[on plane to New York]. Previously when flying into LaGuardia Airport I knew we were getting close as the plane would bank far right and then turn almost 90 degrees left to approach the runway. If you were on the left side of the plane once it began

Page 36

to bank to the right out the windows you would see the Twin Towers and everything NYC had to offer. However, on this night as the plane began to make its right bank, I looked out the window to see nothing, no Twin Towers, only lights on the ground shinning up towards the sky filled with dust. It was the most eerie feeling I had ever felt. I don’t know if it was real or was I just imagining, but it was in the clouds of dust moving upwards toward the Heavens that I could see all kinds of sizes and shapes moving upwards as well. I will never forget that feeling and sight. Not a single person made a sound, no one spoke, everyone just stared. Yet once the pilot turned the lights on and we landed, if you did make eye contact with anyone on the flight, all you saw were eyes filled with tears and disbelief.” Dean Downey (correspondent) “When I heard the news, I had just left a bike shop visiting with friends. I drove to my parent’s house so I could get the news coverage and arrived there to see the planes crashing into the Twin Towers. I was shocked. I could not believe there are such low life individuals capable of causing such a tragedy on our Country and innocent lives. I called my wife and told her and then we both went to our daughter’s school and had lunch with her. We told her about what happened and how much we both loved her. It caused me to appreciate life more and to never fail to tell your loved ones and friends that you do love them, never take life for granted.” Randy “Harley Doc” McCamey (correspondent/photographer) “I was presenting a technical paper at a research conference in the Hyatt Regency DFW ... As I exited the garage onto International Parkway, the main artery through DFW, it

was immediately obvious that something was very wrong. International Parkway is a 6-lane highway through DFW, 3 southbound lanes and 3 northbound lanes, and there was not a single vehicle on the road! I actually stopped my pickup in the middle of an otherwise very busy highway in the heart of Dallas/Fort Worth, got out and walked around on the empty road. That probably best describes what I felt at the time – empty.” Elm “Scout” Valle (feature writer) “I was at Fort Knox and was in the middle of out processing from the Army. 30 minutes later the entire base was on lock down. We barricaded all entrances to base with gun trucks and tanks. Not only did I watch it [the initial coverage, including the second plane hitting], I was responsible for coordinating security detail for Fort Knox and attended many of the briefings. I was still out processed but a stop loss was put in effect two months later and a good part of me really regretted that I did not stay in the Army to help out. But I come from a line of military service and I did 6 years myself serving in various tours of duty. To this day I remember that minute/hour with clarity as I stood in front of the TV with my DOD out processing papers.” Butch Hayes (correspondent) “I was attending some classes at San Jacinto College. My wife Sandy paged me and I called her and she stated that a plane had hit the trade center. I went and found a TV and watch until the first tower went down. I went home thinking that after the second plane hit this was no accident I was thinking that the Houston Fire department might call us all back to work. As soon as I got home I was watching the events. Not only did we lose 343 brothers and sisters that day I lost 19 very close friends from the FDNY.” ThunderRoadsTexas.com

O

n our cover, we show off another tribute bike from the Towers’ out of Fort Worth. Unlike many other “in-your-face” tribute bikes (all beautiful, but obvious), “Bob” is more subtle in its message. When the Towers bought this 2005 Covington Bobber Softail (oneof-one) it came with the dice already on the belt drive area. They had been wanting to add a 9/11 tribute bike to their growing collection and when they saw the dice, “Let’s Roll” came to mind… and so did those last words of Todd Beamer, as he put down the phone, sounded the “charge” for a counterattack against the hijackers on Flight 93. The Towers had worked with EckCraft before and sought their assistance again to create new mirrors, designed by Gary, shaped like dice for the bobber. Shark Performance (paint) added the dice to the rear fender, along with the words “Let’s Roll”. The dice valve caps, keychain, etc. have been added along the way, continuing the subtle theme. In addition to the 9/11-related pieces, the bike boasts an impressive light display, a round tube on the frame for insurance and paperwork, some chrome, and a digital speedometer in the center of the handlebars. Also in the photo is the 9/11 Flight Crew Memorial in Grapevine (corner of Texan Trail and the Northwest Highway). Dedicated on July 4, 2008 it honors the flight crews of the four planes used against us in the attacks. If you visit their website (911FlightCrewMemorial.org), you can see the list and each name is linked to a biography through Legacy.com, a “Remember September 11, 2001 memorial site. The 9/11 Memorial Foundation of Grapevine will holding two ceremonies at the memorial on September 11, 2011. A morning lowering of the flag at 7:30 a.m. and a longer Memorial program at 7:00 p.m. The foundation is working on future memorials for the Grapevine area, honoring the various first responders.

Gary & Brenda Towers (owners of “Bob”) On a business trip through Louisiana that was supposed to start on 9/11 put on hold for a few days, Gary recounts people they met on the road: “We encountered folks at Harley-Davidson dealerships that we stopped at that had been in New York or on the road and been unable to get home due to flights being cancelled and heard their stories of how they had rented cars, tried to buy motorcycles or cars, anything that would drive to get home! Some even pooled their money to buy a used vehicle and all pile in together and planned to sell the vehicle when they got home!” Sean Kester (correspondent) “We were monitoring the event at work. When it became evident that this was an attack, we started prepping for a possible situation in Dallas (I work in Healthcare).” When asked if he made any changes to his daily routine: “I carry extra ammo now. My family security plans are much more robust.” Shelly “Cricket” Beatty (correspondent and sales) “I was at work, in a physical therapy office, attending to a patient who was an American Airlines flight attendant. The news was so upsetting she ran out of the room with a medical gown on and I had to chase her down the hall to console her. I married an American soldier who was lucky enough to come back from Iraq in 2005. I was awed at his decommissioning ceremony in Waco. We sat in the stands and peered down on the football field, at line after line of soldiers who had made it home, the ones who did make it home.” Linda Nilsson (correspondent) “I was working the night shift in ICU when we saw the news on one of the TV monitors. We then turned on all the TV’s in the unit, so that we could watch the news clips of the

fall of the towers, and all the interviews, no matter where we were in the unit. Those patients that were well enough, watched as well. The next few days were a blur, and I did not get much sleep as I watched the coverage over and over. Life as we know it, changed forever that day. Security became an even greater issue at the hospital where I worked, and paranoia played a good part... as none of us really have ever felt safe since that day.” Brian “Native NYer” Scott (correspondent) “I was working in Manhattan... After the first tower fell, I walked out to 6th Ave to see what I could. I saw the second tower burning with my own eyes. I stayed and stared for a few minutes while I was listening to the news on my portable CD player. I started walking back to my office and as I stepped off the elevator on the fifth floor, I heard the newscaster report the second tower just fell. I could not stop thinking about all the people that had just died not five miles away from where I was. And I could not stop thinking about the seven times I went for job interviews in the twin towers between May 2000 and May 2001... and I couldn’t stop thinking about every person I interviewed with at Cantor Fitzgerald had just died... and I couldn’t stop thinking about why.” George Darcy (correspondent) “At the time of the 9-11 attacks I was on the job, and my wife was at her job. She worked at Sam’s Club as a people greeter, her being by the door and in sight of the TV area. I was working in a warehouse 45 miles away. I had no Idea till my wife called my cell phone to tell me what was happening. My supervisor made a quick run home and brought a small TV with rabbit ears. We all stood in shock as the second aircraft hit. For the next few days that little TV was only turned off when we went home. We both felt as if we were in shock plain and simple, almost the same but different than when the shuttle exploded but still shocked and deeply affected.”

Judge Judy to Prostitute: “Don’t piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining. Now, exactly when did you realize you were raped?”

He brought dat snake to da barn an let him loose right in da middle and just sat dere and watched. Well, Thibodeaux was watchin’ for a long time, I mean long, an dere wasn’t nuttin’ happenin’. Dat big o le snake jus curled up hiself in da middle of dat barn and slept all day. He didn’t even move and dem rats jus run all around.

Prostitute (wiping away tears and sobbing): “When the check bounced.”

Thibodeaux got real frustrated and he called up Boudreaux on da phone, “Boudreaux, man dats some bad advice bout dat snake. Dem rats play all day long.

A blonde decides to try horseback riding, even though she has had no lessons, nor prior experience. She mounts the horse unassisted, and the horse immediately springs into motion. It gallops along at a steady and rhythmic pace, but the blonde begins to slide from the saddle. In terror, she grabs for the horse’s mane, but cannot seem to get a firm grip. She tries to throw her arms around the horse’s neck, but she slides down the horse’s side anyway. The horse gallops along, seemingly impervious to its’ slipping rider. Finally, giving up her frail grip, the blonde attempts to leap away from the horse and throw herself to safety. Unfortunately, her foot has become entangled in the stirrup; she is now at the mercy of the horse’s pounding hooves as her head is struck against the ground over and over. As her head is battered against the ground, she is mere moments away from unconsciousness when to her great fortune, a biker named “Panhead Phil”, sees her dilemma and unplugs the horse. Thank God for Bikers. Boudreaux was out in da field talkin’ wit his friend Thibodeaux. Thibodeaux said, “Boudreaux , you see dat ole barn out dere? Well man, its completely infestered wit’ rats. I tried everything I know an’ can’t get rid of dem.” Boudreaux say, “Thibodeaux, I know zactly how to get rid of dem rats. You gotta get you one of dem bull constriptors. ”Thibodeaux say, “Whats a bull constriptor?” Boudreaux explains, “ Man. Dats one of dem big ole snakes and he loves to eat rats and swallers dem whole, all at once.” Well, da nex’ day Thibodeaux went down to Kliberts reptile farm and bought him da biggest bull constripter dat dey got.

“Boudreaux say,”Man,Thibodeaux, I know just what to do. Give dat snake some Viagra. “Thibodeaux say, “What! Viagra! What’s dat gonna do?” Boudreaux say, “I was just listening to da radio and de man say dat Viagra is da best t’ing to use for a reptile dysfunction.” Curtis & Leroy saw an ad in the Starkville Daily News Newspaper in Starkville, MS. and bought a mule for $100. The farmer agreed to deliver the mule the next day. The next morning the farmer drove up and said, “Sorry, fellows, I have some bad news, the mule just up and died last night.” Curtis & Leroy replied, “Well, then just give us our money back.” The farmer said, “Can’t do that. I went and spent it already.” They said, “O.K., then, just bring us the dead mule.”

store and asked, “What’d you fellers ever do with that dead mule?” They said, “We raffled him off like we said we wuz gonna’ do.” Leroy said, “Shucks, we sold 500 tickets fer two dollars apiece and made a profit of $898.” The farmer said, “My Lord, didn’t anyone complain?” Curtis said, “Well, the feller who won got upset. So we gave him his two dollars back.” Two great white sharks swimming in the ocean spied survivors of a sunken ship. ”Follow me son” the father shark said to the son shark and they swam to the mass of people. “First we swim around them a few times with just the tip of our fins showing.” And they did. “Well done, son! Now we swim around them a few times with all of our fins showing.” And they did. “Now we eat everybody.” And they did. When they were both gorged, the son asked, “Dad, why didn’t we just eat them all at first? Why did we swim around and around them?” His wise father replied, “Because son, they just taste better after you scare the shit out of them.

The farmer asked, “What in the world y’all gonna’ do with a dead mule?” Curtis said, “We gonna’ raffle him off.” The farmer said, “You can’t raffle off a dead mule!” Leroy said, “We shore can! Heck, we don’t hafta’ tell nobody he’s dead!” A couple of weeks later, the farmer ran into Curtis & Leroy at the Piggly Wiggly grocery
