As I write this, temperatures are dropping, but only making riding nicer! Gotta love year-round riding weather (for most of the state, anyway). It just further proves we live in the best state in the Union! Every November, we allot most of our content to honor our military families, in homage to Veterans Day. On our cover, the Ride for the GI event attended by Donny Phillips on our behalf. And Randy McCamey offers up the Texas Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway (Highway 6) as a lead in for our staff to brag about their own service men and women. If you have a service man or woman you want to honor, please send their picture to me, along with a brief paragraph about their service, including their name, rank, and the conflict/war/area in which they served. We have three full pages of events we’ve attended so far this fall – our Fall Rally Review! For events that fell after the November print deadline, we’ll catch up with them in December/ January. This month, we head to the Lone Star Rally the first weekend and ride along with the best for the Texas Honor Ride. Also, for those wanting to do one last rally out in the Hill Country, there’s the Three Sisters Veterans Rally, located at their new location – Three Sisters Lodging in Camp Wood. Of course, we can’t forget… this month the Toy Runs kick in strong! Also this month, we announce the winner of our Points Across Texas reader rides program annual drawing for a FREE weekend at Koyote Ranch Resort in Medina! It’s not too late to submit qualified photos to get your FREE patch… deadline for that is December 31. 2012. As we look to the end of the year, we are feverishly working on our 2013 plans. This includes what the Points Across Texas program looks like and we’re looking at rallies and events to sponsor. If you organize an event (rallies, one-day benefits, or bike nights), send me the sponsorship information… let me see what we can do! We are tickled to welcome new advertisers Bryant’s Ice House (Katy) and Adam & Eve (adult stores in NW Houston and The Woodlands). Be sure to stop by their places and say “hi” – let them know you saw them in Thunder Roads Texas! This leads me into my next topic... We’ll be highlighting Holiday Shopping and include a Shopping Guide in the December issue. We are offering our lowest price on an ad yet – Biz Card size for one month (December only) for only $75! We don’t accept Biz Card sizes for less than three months and at a cost of $105/month. This is a GREAT deal! Because of the holidays, we have a “hard” deadline of November 5. So don’t wait – reserve your spot NOW! Ride safe... and ride with THUNDER! A LITTLE HELP PLEASE I am hoping you can help me out. I am looking for a good biker bar that has live music. I moved here from SC where bars were everywhere. I understand I am in the Bible belt but I would hope there’s some place for an old biker to hang out with fellow bikers in the Ft Worth area. Thanks for all your help and awesome mag. Butch M EDITOR’S NOTE: Of course I helped him out with some of the locations we hear about all the time. I even provided him with a link to a website that lists biker bars around Texas. I also advised him that we’re on the western edge of the Bible belt, so have a LOT of biker bars with great live local music. If anyone ever needs assistance finding something related to the Texas motorcycle market - please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’ll do what I can! And if you see Butch along the way - make sure to steer him to the next great biker bar in the area! BOO BENEFIT THANK YOU Thank you for the great article. I thought it was very well written and covered the rally well. Thank you for all the help this year and in the years past. We are pleased to be teamed up with Thunder Roads.

My husband and I hit all the “News” on the list in the Thunder Roads Magazine. We even found a couple of extra ones. I am not sure who would want to see these but your email was there. Thank you very much for the idea of this ride. We have lots of stories. It was amazing. Sue L EDITOR’S NOTE: When we added the Monthly Ride Map back in June 2009, we knew it would be something folks wanted to use. While we hear many accolades, this one included pictures and I wanted to share them with our readers! In 2013, we will be combining our Monthly Ride Map with the Points Across Texas reader rides program. Details will be in our January issue and, of course, online.

Thanks again, Boo EDITOR’S NOTE: This was our third year to support this wonderful charity. I did a stint as the Director

The Ultimate in Style and Safety: Lunasee Active Side Lighting ASL 1000 oo many times we have heard: “But officer I never saw the motorcycle!’ Like it or not it’s getting darker earlier. However, most of us still want to ride as much as possible. Riding at night it is harder for riders to see and be seen. Picking out motorcycle headlights or taillights out of other lights is not easy for other drivers. 75% of all accidents involving another vehicle are caused by the drivers’ failure to see the motorcycle before the collision. Almost 60% of fatal single vehicle crashes occur at night. One of the greatest causes of death or injury, and the leading mortality factor for bikers, is not being seen by nearby motorist. Too many of us have friends and family that died simply because another motorist didn’t see them. It’s not that people in cars can’t see us, they just do not look for us. Drivers have been trained to look for larger vehicles, not small ones. In the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Manual (I know all you die hard riders have read this spellbinding Manual from cover to cover), which can be found at http://online2. msf-usa.org/ on page 9, there is a section titled “Know Your Responsibilities”. As a rider you can’t be sure that other operators will see you or yield the right of way. To lessen your chances of a crash occurring, the first thing on their list is to “be visible”. Regrettably the majority of bikers are killed when riding during the times 3:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to Midnight. So riding at night as a rule can be hazardous to your health. In spite of these facts, we are not going home and parking the bike for the evening. We are bikers we ride in the good or bad weather, day or night, and we ride anytime possible. We hear all this talk about taking Motorcycle Safety Courses, not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, wearing helmets, not speeding, wearing reflective gear, etc. All of these have value. Although that does not change the fact that four-wheel vehicles still hit us… they

Page 12

H

do not see us! For all that believe “loud pipes save lives”, I say to you “bright lights save more lives””! And while on the subject of lighting, consider adding sidelights as well. Sidelights are much more effective in night riding. At night, they can help avoid being taken out on your left or right side when approaching an intersection. Most bikes on the market have little or no lighting visible from the sides and “Reflective Apparel” is just “passive” and only work when in the direct path of headlights. Single points of lights, like your front and rear lights, often get lost in the traffic. That brings Two Wheel Thunder TV to test the declaration of Lunasee’s Company as being the best state-of-the-art active side lighting system on the market today. So on a HD Ultra Classic we had Powder Keg Harley Davidson a Gold Bar & Shield Dealership install the product. Lunasee’s states that you can install the system yourself if you have reviewed the Fitment Guide and have determined it will fit on your bike. Detailed installation instructions are included. The ASL 1000 kit comes with versatile mounting hardware that should allow installation on most popular makes/models, including BMW, Harley, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha. However, if you are not comfortable installing lighting on your bike, they recommend you contact an authorized dealer to have the system expertly installed. That was our choice. Or you can email techsupport@lunasee.com and tell them the make, model and year and they will give you the proper advice

on installation. For us the results are in: The Lunasee Active Side Lighting system provides you with a unique visual effect that is sure to turn heads and will have people wondering “how do you do that?”. It enhances the appearance of the bike at night and makes it much safer to ride after dark. There is no wheel lighting system like it. Lunasee provides active side light to your bike in the optimal color, which is the most sensitive to the human eye; making you visible from the side and in the periphery even when outside the beam of headlights. Lunasee was created by Jesse Palmer and Barry Allen, in Greenville, NC with the goal of creating a simple and unique product that would provide enhanced visibility and safety. They deliver on the promise of high-quality and welldesigned products that provides a unique combination of style and safety for riders. Watch their YouTube video and see the product in action. ROADTRIP - St Louis or Bust! reetings Piglets! It’s time once again for another knees in the breeze bull session with the Pig. Today’s article starts back in August with a phone call to Rainman when he turned 50. The call, of course, came from his mom and dad wishing him a happy birthday. Along with that call came a piece of advice from his dad, “Son, I hate to admit it, but I can’t remember doing one significant thing from the age of 50 to 65. Don’t let that happen to you”. Was that advice from an old man who may have regrets not having done more in his life? Or, was his dad telling him something else? Two weeks later there was another phone call, this time it was from his mom. She reminded Rainman it had been a few years since his last visit and she was asking for us to come home to St. Louis for the Thanksgiving holidays. (Ya’ll know I just love to watch Rainman squirm when his mother gets onto him.) Well it is no secret that I am one who does not enjoy traveling to St. Louis for holidays, let alone for a vacation. It’s not the visit I dread, it’s the drive. It is a drive that is so long and Oklahoma is so flat and so boring. Then I heard him say it, “OK mom, I’ll see what I can do”. Three days later Rainman had approval from work to take off for that week. “Oh Great, just what we needed,” I said to myself. Then I heard grandpa’s words played over in the back of

Page 14

H

November 2012

my mind “I can’t remember doing anything significant from 50 to 65”. While Rainman was able to take the time off work, the rest of the family was not able to. It was beginning to look like it was going to be just me and him for this trip. Fortunately Rainman decided this would be a great time to take the bike on a long distant run. (Hmmmm, now things could be looking up here, a long distant trip with no female supervision.) I looked at him and smiled; Rainman winked and said, “For every time there is a first, old buddy.” Suddenly there was a flash inside my head, my brain burst into fire, the porch light had turned on and someone was home. I now understood why Rainman was willing to go St. Louis. He and I had never been past the state line on the bike before. Oh we’ve traveled all over the state of Texas on the bike. But we have never taken a long distance trip like this before; nothing over 500 miles, let alone solo. At that moment the two of us had made a pact that this trip would be deemed “St. Louis or Bust”. It was decided that we would make this trip significant. For a route we have cage traveled in the past so many times before, there would be something different; there would be something better. This time we could bypass Oklahoma and go through the hills of Arkansas. There are also several sections of the old Route 66 we can follow along too. We needed to be prepared for

anything to happen. We have seven days to travel 1000 miles up, spend time with the folks, and travel 1000 miles back. There are nut logs to eat and stops at shops… to see the world’s largest ball of string along the way. The question is, “Should we travel the same route as before? Or should we pick a new one?” I think we will go wherever the road leads us on our adventure. We wanted to make sure we do everything right so we talked with several people more experienced in long distant trips. Tribe of Judah Rex: A thousand mile trip? That is do-able. Just make sure you have good tires, a good battery and your engine is running fine and that trip is a piece of cake. Also before you leave, you will want to google gas stations and dealerships along your route in case you get into trouble. ~ Ok, that sounds good to me. Keyman: Rain gear, dudes. You need rain gear and full face helmets. And I can guarantee you if you hit rain along the way and you suit up, you will stay nice and dry. Except for the one bead of water that will come off the back of your helmet, it will get inside your suit, then travel down your back, and run down the crack of your ass. ~ Now that is something I have to look forward to. Rocky: Wow, a trip to St. Louis. Hey, maybe you can leave Pig at a travel center along the way and see if he can make

ThunderRoadsTexas.com

it to St. Louis on his own. ~ Remind me to remove him from our Christmas card list.

for you. It clears your mind and refreshes your heart and soul. You two boys need to go and have a good time. ~ Have a good time. Damn straight!

Moose: Fit as many clothes in your travel bag as possible. Mom always says to be sure to have clean underwear on in case of an accident. I always say if there is an accident, your underwear won’t be clean anymore. ~ This looks like it’s time for us to get some new saddle bags for the bike.

One of the most beautiful things about being a biker is having a sense of adventure. What will we find on this trip? I wonder what’s beyond that hill in the distance. What kind of beer do they sell in the next town? Answering all those

questions without all the, “Dad, are we there yet? Dad, are we there yet? Dad, are we there yet?” interruptions will be an adventure in itself. I am so ready to head out. ROADTRIP! Come on Rainman... lets go. Shelly, editor of TRT: Pig, be sure to have your next article turned in before you leave. ~ Awww Jeez, I knew I forgot something.

Phantom Willie: Hey Bro, you need money. Figure your gas and meals then double that amount. You should have enough to get home. Wait a minute, Pig is going with you? Better triple that with all the beer he drinks. ~ Thanks Willie, now I can use the new saddle bags to ice down my beer and store my Cheetos for the trip. Leyland: Just remember they are only miles. Prepare your body for the trip as much as you can. You need to ride as much as you can now to turn your butt into a piece of leather. ~ What!?! Pig skin doesn’t count? Harry: Be careful of what back-roads you take in Arkansas. ~ Ah Harry, you’re starting to scare me. This isn’t Deliverance here. Mike: Make sure you have plenty of maps. Don’t rely just on the map app on your phone. What would you do if you get lost and you don’t have a Wi-Fi signal? ~ Wow, he does have a good point there. Bubbles: I think everyone should take a 1000 mile trip on their bike solo every now and then. It’s good

A Season of Thanks and Giving Shelly “Cricket” Beatty (Feb/May/Aug/Nov) he season has turned to fall in Texas and the weather is changing accordingly. It’s a riding season with cooler weather and, in some places, the visual signs of fall. The autumn colors are tucked away here and there for us to enjoy. No matter where you are in Texas there is one thing that never changes, the hearts of those who reside here. Our biker community is never left out of having huge hearts during this season. This is a season, that as bikers we join together whether we are a club, a riding organization, or independents. This is the time of year that we show others who is under the helmets, doo rags, bandanas, and all that leather! Oh, and don’t forget the beards and sunglasses! I know I’m going to hear from some of you about how I want to expose the softer side of the biker community. But honestly, how many of you have read those poems about how others judge us for the way we look or carry ourselves. You know and I know why we have all that leather and such. Sometimes I wish I could grow a beard so, I could stay warm during the winter when I ride. Ok, not really! My full face mask is sufficient, but you get the idea. Yes, there are times when we don’t shine like stars or maybe it’s just that we don’t get enough credit for the things that we do bring to our Texas communities. Never the less,

Page 16

H

November 2012

I want to share with you the heart of bikers during a season of thanks and giving. As we move into fall and through to December our hearts open to the needs of others. Some of us choose to put on events as big as the delivery of food baskets to selected families for Thanksgiving or Toy Runs for children in need at Christmas. There are also, Santa visits on a bike to hospitals, giving rides on our bikes to children who suffer from cancer and stockings hung around the communities to collect new under garments to be delivered to shelters the week before Christmas. For those of you who have never put on such events you would be amazed at how much work is involved in planning and executing these activities. It takes a whole lot of dedication, volunteers, and a desire to help others to accomplish success. I don’t dare leave out all of you who help make these events successful by just showing up with your own desire to help another. I can’t guess how many families are reached throughout Texas by just the biker community during the holiday season. If you have ever attended a toy ride, visualize a toy ride for nearly every county and then add two or three additional toy rides for the larger ones. Then add in all the other types of events that go on during this season.

If you participate in any way during the holiday season, I would like to personally thank you for your service to others. Sometimes we do not see the fruit of all our labors, nor do we get recognized for what we do. I know that as a volunteer myself, helping to host some of these types of events, there is generally no pat on the back or job well done. Your reward is simply the smile of the child who received a new toy or clothes; or maybe the tear on a parents face when they are not only handed a turkey to cook for their Thanks giving meal, but the meal in its entirety. It’s a wonderful feeling to bring others happiness. If these are types of events that you have never taken part in, I encourage you to find a local event [check out our Event List] and become a part of it in a way that suits you. So, let’s have some fun and all join together once again. Let’s show our Texas communities who bikers are in a season of thanks and giving.

CONGRATULATIONS go out to David Johanson from Richmond! He’s our drawing winner for the FREE weekend stay at Koyote Ranch Resort in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. He took a weekend ride with his brother, Phil, in May. They decided to use our Points Across Texas reader rides program as a guide. “We each drove 1.5 hours to meet in Navasota, I from the south, he from the north. We then headed east. We looked for twisties, for anything unusual, and looked a lot. It took us 5 hours to go 100 miles, and was an awesome day. Camped in the forest and headed back to college station to part our ways. The Points across Texas was icing on the cake for the trip. Even though only 36 hours, seemed like I was gone 3 days. I had been wanting to do Points Across Texas since last year, now its done. Thanks for helping us get more into the spirit of Texas. When advised of his winning, David says, “The weekend my brother and I did the Points Across Texas is still one of the highlights of my year.” It’s not too late to earn your FREE patch! Pictures submitted by December 31, 2012 qualify. It’s so easy! Only 10 pictures!

4B Wild West Bike Rally August 10-12 * Brownfield Sponsored by Thunder Roads Texas!

Lonnie Fitch of Strip Club Choppers of Texas

FALL RALLY REVIEW

4B Wild lived up to its name… Friday, started out slow, but by sundown the bikes and rigs were rolling in and they kept coming. Once the party started it did not stop. The crowd was a little sparse Friday night, but the band was hot and the people there had a great time. Saturday as a vendor was slow, but once again when the sun went down the party started and went all night long. Bands were great! People were having a good time! Strip Club Choppers of Texas was treated very well by the 4B WILD bunch. Most the folks at the rally were from Lubbock or New Mexico. The ones I spoke with said they look forward to 4B all year. All in all, it was a good rally and growing.

Summertime Bikes & Blues Festival August 31-September 1 * Freeport Sponsored by Thunder Roads Texas!

Pictures by David and Stacey Youngblood, TRT friends This year’s Saturday headliner, Full Throttle Saloon’s Jackyl. As always, great Blues music, kid friendly atmosphere, bike shows, burnout contests, vendors and more.

Caveman’s Benefit for Bellville VFD, 100 Club and Stevens & Pruett Ranch August 25 * Houston to Bellville Photos by Bob Cooney & courtesy of the Outlaw Dave Show

Outlaw Dave led a ride from his new Outlaw Dave’s Worldwide Headquarters in Houston to the American Man Cave store in Bellville, then on to Buffalo Creek Winery (also in Bellville) for a friendly poker game... all to benefit some of Caveman’s favorite charities. Our own Bob Cooney joined the pack! Beneift proceeds came from rider/passenger registration, raffles, 50/50 drawings and the poker tournament.

The Texas Rally September 6-9 * Big Creek Marina on Lake Somerville Sponsored by Thunder Roads Texas! Attended by Bob Cooney, TRT CEO and Outlaw Dave, TRT friend

This year was Damon Dave’s sixth year to host this rally. It’s full of vendors; food; biker games; bike, car, tattoo, stage and campsite contests. This year, there was the return of the popular Tiki Lounge, complete with stripper poles (well-used, we might add). Of course, the always popular, free luau dinner on Saturday. For entertainment, two stages providing all day live music, with a new Country & Blues night on Friday and Skid Row as headliner on Saturday (for the rock enthusiasts). Also on Saturday, the tradition of Outlaw Dave hosting the stage and featuring a moment of silence for 9/11. Always a fund party. The sister rally, Carts, Bikers & Babes Rally in April 2013 (same location) is already selling campsites. Get yours early!

7th Annual Hot Springs Rally September 6-9 - Hot Springs, AR By Don Brewer, TRT Correspondent The rally featured two poker runs, a bike show, a parade through the streets of downtown Hot Springs, bike games, vendors, and much more! For entertainment, they brought in the big headliners, Mustang Sally on Friday and Foreigner on Saturday. This is a popular rally for Texas motorcyclists – so thanks Don for sharing your pictures!

Oldest Town in Texas Rally September 14-16 * Nacogdoches Sponsored by Thunder Roads Texas! Pictures by Traci McClure, TRT Correspondent Attendance seemed to be down this year (I believe because of the weather?) but there seemed to be more vendors and the addition to the Expo was really nice. The OTT Staff was great, as usual...they were scattered all over, so if you had a question about an upcoming show or needed anything, there was always someone close by to answer questions etc...super friendly & very accommodating.

FALL RALLY REVIEW

This year, the rally hosted a wedding. Kleve and Deborah Smith tied the know on Saturday, with a large reception! Deborah was ridden in (side-saddle) by Jerry Mantellini of CrossTown Renegades and the party entertainment, none other than Iron Cowgirl Missy. Congratulations Kleve and Deborah! Thanks for sharing your day with our biker community!

Outlaw Dave’s Ride to Bryant’s Icehouse Grand Re-Opening September 22 * Houston to Katy Pictures by Bob Cooney, TRT CEO Our CEO, Bob Cooney, joined Outlaw Dave on a ride celebrating the re-opening of Bryant’s Icehouse in Katy. They took off from the new Outlaw Dave Worldwide Headquarters in Houston around 2:00 p.m. for a nice ride out I-10. The afternoon consisted of live music, bikini bike wash, lots of bikers, food, and fun! For $10 donation to the Outlaw Foundation, ride shirts were included.

TMRA2 6th Annual Hysterical Marker Run October 6 * Angleton Attended by Mike “Biker” Boone, TRT Correspondent Information provided by Frank Dietz, 1st Brazoria TMRA2 For a busy filled weekend, quite a few folks made the 1st Brazoria Texas Motorcycle Rights II Hysterical Marker Run. Riding around Brazoria County, reading the historical marker alongside the roadways, where Texas began, we found out a lot more about our great state than what we thought we knew. Good weather, good ride, and good people, and making a little bankroll for our motorcycle rights organization, all made this a must ride. See y’all in Austin for Legislation Day in January 2013.

Ride for the GI Rally: Benefit for the US Wounded Soldiers Foundation By Donny Phillips, TRT Correspondent; Some pictures provided by Outcasts MC member Jeremey “Froggy” Danes

T

he Ride for the GI Rally is held the third Saturday of each September. It features an outdoor concert with Houston’s hottest bands (this year, the Josh Ward Band headlined Saturday night), live auctions, biker venders, poker run, 50/50 drawings, biker games, tattoo artists, and other fun activities. Additionally, the same organizations hosts a golf tournament earlier each September. This year, Outcasts MC, Time Out Tavern, and various vendors put together a great benefit rally for the Wounded Soldiers Foundation this year. There were some great prizes in the auction and raffles, such as a Caribbean vacation and BBQ Pit on a trailer. There were 60+ bikers with additional friends and families out to show support for this great cause. An early count of earnings from the golf

benefit and motorcycle rally have proceeds in excess of $25,000 going to the Foundation. I was not familiar with the Humble area and was quite surprised how nice the scenery was along the route we took. From Time Out Tavern we rode along 1960 across Lake Houston. Shortly after crossing Lake Houston we took a left on Crosby Huffman Road to Plum Grove Road. This area is worth the trip by itself; all the canopy cover from the trees reminded me of riding in Tomoka Park during bike week in Daytona. We then took Plum Grove Road onto FM 1010 North up to the southwest side of Cleveland. Next we turned onto Highway 105 Wes; then on to Highway 321 South to Dayton. From Dayton we returned to the starting point along 1960 for another run across Lake Houston. Thanks to a group from the Red Knights, it ran safe and

smooth for the two hour ride. Thanks to the Outcasts MC for making this rally happen. I appreciate the opportunity to ride and show support for our soldiers here and overseas. To those fighting overseas, thanks for keeping the enemy away from our borders and come home safe. The mission of the US Wounded Soldier Foundation is to provide for the needs of our combat veterans deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s their way of saying, “Thank You” for their dedication and loyalty to the United States and the citizens they have pledged their lives to protect. For more information about the Wounded Soldiers Foundation or to make an online donation, visit USWoundedSoldiers.com. For information about the event, visit OucastsMC.org.

T e x a s Stat e Hi gh way 6: T e x a s Ko r e a n Wa r V e t e r a n s M e m o r i a l Hi gh way By Randy “Harley Doc” McCamey, TRT Associate Editor

The Korean War, noted in US history as a Police Action by the Allies, was a war between the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The US and its allies in the United Nations were involved in the conflict from 1950 to 1954. Known as The Forgotten War because of the lack of publicity and public attention that was given to the conflict, the Korean War resulted in some 34,000 troops killed and just over 8,000 captured. Of those captured, about one-half died of starvation and disease. The history books give much more depth and detail than I am able to include in this article. Suffice it to say that many brave men and women sacrificed for our freedom and their valor should not be taken for granted. In memory of the Texas troops who fought and died in the war, in 1997 Texas State Highway 6 was designated by the Texas Department of Transportation as the Texas Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway.

Texas State Highway 6 is an easy ride with four lanes much of its length and a smooth two-lane for the remainder. Smooth is not the term associated with the Korean war effort, however, and I hope that the next time you are on the Texas Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway, you will take a moment to remember those brave Texas veterans who took the hard road and fought the good fight in the Korean War.

Multi-War Scrapbook

RIDE

The ride map this month will be a bit different. I’m going to give you only a brief description of the ride and focus on the memorial aspects of the highway. Several members of the Thunder Roads Texas team, including myself, have ties to military veterans of what I call “the old wars” and I wanted to take this opportunity to recognize and commemorate those individuals for their duty and sacrifice for our country.

Out of Waco, the highway runs northwest crossing over Lake Waco and on through the cross timbers region of central Texas and the cities of Clifton, Hico, Dublin and Eastland where it crosses I-20. From Eastland, the highway goes east to Cisco before turning northeast again and on to Albany and Stamford. From Stamford, the highway turns almost due north and goes to Quanah. Just south of Quanah, Copper Breaks State Park is just off the highway and makes for an interesting historical stop for those of you interested in Texas history. Copper Breaks also makes a great place to camp or picnic. The Texas Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway terminates at the Red River in Hardeman County just north of Quanah where it becomes Oklahoma Highway 6. Texas-based, Texas-focused, Texas PROUD!

MAP

Texas State Highway 6 runs from the Galveston to the Red River in north central Texas, cutting a 552 mile swath (about 10.5 hours) across the state from southeast to northwest. Highway 6 is also part of the King of Trails Highway, Historic Highway 75, which once ran from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to Galveston. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I’ll work on the ride map for the King of Trails Highway next year. From Galveston, Texas 6 begins as you veer off I-45 North at Bayou Vista headed toward Santa Fe. The highway weaves its way west of Houston. Traveling north, the highway goes around the city of Navasota and goes into Brazos County where it skirts Bryan/College Station as the Earl Rudder Freeway (the business route goes through town) on its way to the town of Hearne. The road is four lanes for much of its travel between Harris County and Waco as it rolls through the farms and fields around Calvert, Reagan and Marlin. Highway 6 crosses Interstate 35 south of Waco, about the half-way point of the highway, and Waco makes a good place to stop if you want to make it a two-day ride. Waco Harley, a Thunder Roads Texas distribution point, is just a mile north of this intersection north on I-35 if you need a rest stop. Don’t forget to check out the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and the old Suspension Bridge that are near the downtown area in Waco.

Miscellaneous family service photos from Randy McCamey, Donny Phillips, and Shelly Horan.

MAP

Billy McCamey, Staff Sergeant, U.S. Air Force My father was a great man. Even before I was born, my father worked to secure my freedom. He was an aircraft electrician who worked on the electrical systems, wiring, and gauges of the aircraft used during and after the Korean war. Stationed in Germany and France, he served his country from 1954 to 1957 to make a better life for his kids and grandkids and the lives of all Americans. Even though he has been gone for some time, he is still my hero. ~ Randy McCamey Bob Cooney, TRT CEO; US Army/US Airforce, E5 I served in the US Army a total of three-and-a-half years as a part of an infantry company that was a part of the 101st Airborne Division. During this time I became a Company Clerk responsible for taking care of our personnel files. I left the Army to transfer into the US Air Force. There I served an additional four years in a reserve Division at the Willow Grove Naval Air Station in Pennsylvania. My duties were serving as a recruiter taking care of new personnel. I was honorably discharged with the grade E5. Henry Benson, Jr; US Army (far right)

He was a gold medal sprinter on the Army Track and Field Team. I do know he was in Germany doing radio code work for quite a while... was a radio man then a code-breaker. While stationed in Germany, he got hit in the radio (on his back) and it exploded. He mentioned once, they used to send them out on patrol even sometimes with no ammo for their guns. ~ Laura Benson Donald Phillips, US Marine Corp, Sergeant, Korea My father was involved in two invasions, including Inchon. ~Donny Phillips

Thunder Roads Texas Staff mEMORIAL Bragging Wall

John Beckwith Steele (1902-1979), US Marines. My Grandfather was in Panama, the last of the mounted Marines. ~ Donna Herrin My fiancé, David Paul Schutlz, E5 US Army, was killed in action Vietnam (1969). Shot down behind enemy lines as a gunner on a helicopter. ~ Donna Herrin And my brother, John Sidney Herrin (1955-2011), Sergeant, US Army Special Forces served in Vietnam and Korea rescuing POWs. ~ Donna Herrin Jimmy Gaines, Captain, US Airforce, Stationed stateside during Vietnam War My father went into the Air Force straight out of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University. Funny story – he was to go with a group on a bus to Waco to sign up for service. His roommate turned off his alarm, he woke late and missed the bus. A friend talked him into getting a car and going up together. When all was said and done - he signed up, but his friend didn’t! If it hadn’t been for that friend, my dad says he might not have signed a commission. ~ Shelly Horan Paul Gaines, US Navy, AT3 – Aviation Electronics Technician My brother was based mostly out of San Diego, served some time in Japan, and did a short 30-day stints on the USS Kitty Hawk (decommissioned in 1998; the last diesel in the fleet) and the USS Nimitz. When asked what he can remember the most … landing in an airplane on the USS Nimitz! ~ Shelly Horan

Jack Rodriguez, US Navy, E4 Petty Officer; Vietnam My step-father served in the US Navy on the USS Sanctuary (1968-70; Vietnam) and was a major contributing factor of the branch my brother chose. Today, he has returned to serve his country, in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary stationed out of Ellington Field in Houston. ~Shelly Horan

Rex Lloyd Gaines (1921-2003), US Army, TEC 4, WWII I’ve written about my grandfather before, but still love to tell the motorcycle story! He was stationed in Germany during WWII and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. In fact, his unit is featured in a book still used at West Point to highlight the RIGHT way to do it! But my favorite story he told was when they were holed up in a small town in the country (in Germany). He found a motorcycle in a nearby abandoned village. He fixed it up and went gallivanting around the countryside – outside of the “safe zone”; basically AWOL. It was his way of dealing with the stress and conflicting boredom during that time (additional picture: over the handle bars of his bike). ~ Shelly Horan Clifford Collier (19201973), US Army, Private First Class, WWII My PaPa died when I was very young. I don’t remember much and we have no service stories, but mom did find a picture. He’s on the right.

Ernest Hull (1898-1975), New Foundland Armed Forces, WWI My great-grandfather with a wartime love story. The story goes… while serving in France, he met my greatgrandmother, Daisy Forbes, married her in Scotland (where she was from) and brought her back. Initially, they lived in his hometown, Springdale, New Foundland, Canada. They eventually came to Texas and settled. NOTE from Shelly – I can list more family members who have served; very proud to serve their country and fight for freedom. So please excuse my indulgence to brag a bit.

A cager was driving home, drunk as a skunk. Suddenly he has to swerve to avoid a tree, then another, then another. A cop car pulls him over, so he tells the cop about all the trees in the road. The cop says, “That’s your air freshener swinging about!” A koala is sitting up in a gum tree smoking a joint, when a little lizard walks past and looks up and says, “Hey koala! What are you doing?” The koala replies, “Smoking a joint, come up and have some.” So the little lizard climbs up and sits next to the koala and they have a few joints. After a while the little lizard says his mouth is dry and he is going to get a drink from the river. The little lizard is so stoned that he leans too far over and falls into the river. A crocodile sees this, swims over to the little lizard helps him to the side, and then asks the little lizard, “What’s the matter with you?” The little lizard explains to the crocodile that he was sitting smoking a joint with the koala in the tree, got too stoned, and fell into the river while taking a drink. The crocodile says he has to check this out, so he walks into the rain forest, finds the tree where the koala is sitting

finishing a joint, and he looks up and says “Hey you!” So the koala looks down at him and says, “Sh*&^t, dude! What the hell was in that water you drank?!!” I mowed the lawn today, and after doing so I sat down and had a couple ice cold beers. The day was really quite beautiful, and the brew facilitated some deep thinking on various topics. Finally I thought about an age old question: Is giving birth more painful than getting kicked in the nuts? Women always maintain that giving birth is way more painful than a guy getting kicked in the nuts. After another beer, and some heavy deductive thinking, I have come up with the answer to that question. Getting kicked in the nuts is more painful than having a baby; and here is the reason for my conclusion. A year or so after giving birth, a woman will often say, “it might be nice to have another child.” On the other hand, you never hear a guy say, “You know, I think I might be ready to try another kick in the nuts.” I rest my case. While creating women, God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all the corners of the world. Then He smiled and made the earth round.

Twas the night of Thanksgiving, but I just couldn’t sleep I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep. The leftovers beckoned -- the dark meat and white, But I fought the temptation with all of my might. Tossing and turning with anticipation, The thought of a snack became infatuation. So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore. I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes, Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes. I felt myself swelling so plump and so round, Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground. I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees Happy eating to all… pass the cranberries, please An industrious turkey farmer was always experimenting with breeding to perfect a better turkey. His family was fond of the leg portion for dinner and there were never enough legs for everyone. After many frustrating attempts, the farmer was relating the results of his efforts to his friends at the general store get together. “Well I finally did it! I bred a turkey that has 6 legs!” They all asked the farmer how it tasted. “I don’t know,” said the farmer, “I never could catch the darn thing!”

IRON COWGIRL MISSY We’ve had the great luck of running into Iron Cowgirl Missy at various events over the last couple years… great sound! What’s even greater is the story behind the girl. After surviving cancer, Missy has seen her fair share of the nasty side of life. However, she doesn’t let that get her down. She’s strong, independent, and loves what she does. She finds healing in her music – writing and performing. She has a long history of riding, including a 2008 15,000 mile, 10 week trip to clear her mind and rebuild her soul. She is a poet at heart, putting her poetry to music and entertaining crowds with great energy. In 2011, the Oldest Town in Texas (OTT) Rally featured Iron Cowgirl Missy as their Saturday night headliner. It was their first gig in Texas, coming directly from the famous Buffalo Chip in Sturgis. She was so well received, both Buffalo Chip and OTT brought her back this year. Her music is a mix of Country and good Southern Rock; rocking the stage, but also offering great story-telling ballads. Their energy is contagious and their hearts can be felt throughout the crowd; bringing it along for the ride. Missy is a staunch supporter of cancer charities, with We Fight Like a Girl Foundation (ovarian cancer) at the top of her list. The group has a very active chapter in the Houston area and both years (2011 & 2012), organized a multi-day trip to ride Missy into Texas and onto the OTT grounds. They also organized a charity ride for the Saturday of both years. For more information about Iron Cowgirl Missy, visit IronCowgirlMissy.com. You can sample/buy her music, read more about her challenges, see where you can catch their performance, and more.
