This year seems to be just flying by and I always seem to be late to do SOMETHING! I hope everyone else has been able to stop and smell the roses along the way this year… remind me what that’s like! We’re in October and full into Fall Rally mode. The parties started last month with The Texas Rally & Luau, Revvin’ for the Ribbon, Cruizin’ for a Cure, Hawg Wild, and many others! This month is the Cowtown Round Up Music Fest and Motorcycle Rally in the Fort Worth Stockyards (October 5), Stevie Ray Vaughn Remembrance Ride & Concert in Dallas (October 6), Boo Benefit in Jefferson (October 11-13), culminating with two of the largest parties in Texas – the Lone Star Rally on Galveston Island and Blowout’s Lone Star Campgrounds & Biker Bash just a few miles up I-45 in Hitchcock (both October 31-November 3). The Lone Star Rally is a family-friendly event that has become the largest four-day rally in the Northern Americas. Blowout’s Lone Star Campgrounds offers those 21 and up a place to camp, shuttles to and from the Island, and an after-hours party bar none. We hope you partake of any of these great October events while the riding weather should be the best of the year! Our BIKE NIGHT SOUTH last month was rocking with Dean Seltzer & the Redneck Mothers. This month, they return to delight again! Also this month, Bob and I will be down south again – along with Outlaw Dave as he hosts one of the final rounds of the Miss Lone Star Rally Bikini Contest. Our bike nights are rain or shine… so even if you have to come in a car – come party with us! On a somber note, we have lost quite a few riders from our local clan. Various reasons, but none really explainable. For riders’ down families all over, know that our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with you; always. We’ve been asked about having a memorial page where folks can honor their fallen. We wish to keep the magazine more positive, but all readers are welcome to submit any time. So feel free to send a photo and brief paragraph (a celebration of life) and we’ll run these in our From the Road section. Back to the fun… have a GREAT October and Happy Halloween! Ride safe... and ride with THUNDER! Shelly “TX Dragonfly” Horan Editor / Owner, Thunder Roads Texas and Owner, Top of Mind Marketing Shelly@ThunderRoadsTexas.com

Can Am Product Review - R2 ive years after production of Can-Am’s “Y-factor” Spyder roadsters began, the Canadian company has made significant changes to the model lineup as well as to the chassis and suspensions of its three-wheelers. Recently, a local cycle shop gave us the opportunity to test three models of the Spyder; the RS (the basic model), ST (middle of the line up) and the RT (top of the line). All three models were exceptionally stable and very easy to learn and drive. The differences between them may seem small but there are distinct advantages in those differences. The Can-Am Spyder is a unique three-wheeled roadster. Unlike a standard “trike”, it has two wheels in front and one larger wheel in back. We found the Spyder appealing to a very wide range of riders. The novice rider will find it supereasy to learn to ride without being intimidated. It only takes a short time to learn the basics. People who have weak legs or back issues that just won’t allow them to hold up a two-wheeler can find their freedom again. One person told me, “I had to stop trying to compare it to a two wheel bike and respect it for what it did well, and the fun that it could provide.” Once the bike runs through its systems check, riders can disengage the brake, turn it on, click it into gear and twist the throttle. As an experienced rider, riding the Can-Am Spyder is unlike any other vehicle I’ve driven or ridden. Fast and powerful, the company says the 106-horsepower engine is good for 0-60 MPH in 4.5 seconds. I don’t doubt them. I found it to be completely controllable… even going 100 MPH!! We found all of the Spyders very comfortable. The ergonomics of the RT (top of the line) are more relaxed compared to the RS (the basic model) – a must for long rides – and was achieved by moving the footboards out five inches, bringing the handlebars back four inches and raising them another three inches higher. While the Spyder ST (middle of the line up) definitely has more room to stretch the legs and the bars are easy to reach as compared to the RS.

Designed more for touring fun than sporting performance, the impressed us with its cavernous and cleverly designed cargo areas, superbly effective fairing, electrically adjustable windshield, heated rider handgrips, and crystal-clear and vibration-free mirrors. The RT seating was very comfortable, even on six-plus-hour rides. And the reverse gear is an awesome addition too! We found all of the models of Spyder’s very versatile and they all had ample storage. To meet sport-touring standards, Can-Am bumped up the storage space on the ST to a claimed 112 liters total. Twist the key counterclockwise when the motorcycle is turned off and it pops the lid on its 12-gallon lockable front storage compartment. Options to customize the Can-Am’s include a combination of hard lockable saddlebags and a five-way adjustable windscreen. We thumbed through the “Mode” controls on the AM/FM audio system and pumped-up the Rock and Roll, (a standard feature on the 2013 Can-Am Spyder ST and all of the RT models). Can-Am has made customizing even more attractive by adding heated handgrips and a Garmin Zumo 660 GPS. You can even add a trailer without voiding the warranty. Try that with any other motorcycle on the market today! It only takes a few gears to realize that the 2013 Spyder ST is a smooth shifter. The Spyder’s semi-automatic tranny, outfitted on the Spyder ST Limited we rode, was quite interesting. You shift up without having to squeeze a clutch and it engages quickly and quietly. It automatically shifts down when engine rpm reaches 2500 but you can shift down manually as needed. Seeing how there’s almost no engine braking, we generally let the transmission do its job. According to Can-Am reps, the power band doesn’t even begin until around 5500 rpm and it climbs from there. The

998cc Rotax V-Twin is more than capable of providing grin-inducing acceleration. It turns quickly and hugs the road like it’s on a track. The suspension is firm and the unique “Y” design with an anti-roll bar keeps the wheels firmly planted on the pavement. The Can-Am also comes standard with a Vehicle Stability System (VSS™) that includes ABS, Traction Control, and Stability Control. I am also told that all models of Can Am Spyder’s have a Digital Encoded Security System whereby the electronic key is coded that recognizes the Spyder the key belongs to and the machines won’t start without it. When we were asked, “Is that thing nearly as much fun as it looks?” the only answer we could give was, “How much do you like power beneath you and the wind in your hair?” That is how much fun you will have on one. In Texas, all you need is a motorcycle operator license to ride a CanAm roadster. We encourage everyone to get a hold of your local Can Am Dealer. Ask them for a free test ride on these absolutely fun, functional and practical three-wheeler rides. You can use them for sport or touring as they are really great machines! Three Twisted Sisters - and a Pig reetings to all. I’m here today to tell you a story about three very hot sisters. All I’m gonna’ say is long legs and fast curves! It all started one night over beers at the Deer Crossing Saloon. My friend Skeeter was telling everyone in the saloon the tale of three lovely ladies he had once met. Skeeter described them the only way a man could; they each had legs that stretched all the way up to their necks and were straight as an arrow. They were smooth too; each leg made for a fast run of fun. But with those legs came some dangerous curves, some curves too fast and too dangerous for the inexperienced man (or Pig). Skeeter went on about how those curves would eat a man’s (or Pig’s) lunch, leaving him hungry for more. To top them off, each sister had hills on her that a man (or Pig) could get lost in. Oh how heaven could be packaged so fine! Separately, the sisters were manageable, but together, they could be too much for just one man (or Pig). I was intrigued by Skeeter’s story of the sisters; my lust had kicked in and I wanted to meet them myself. I wanted to know if these three sisters were as good as Skeeter said they were. “You can find them out near Medina,” Skeeter told me. “How will I find them when I get to Medina, Skeeter?” “Just follow the road,” was all he said. For three days all I could think about was those three sisters. I wanted to meet them and I wanted to know if they were as badass as Skeeter said. Saturday morning came with a bright sun and clear blue skies. The morning temperature indicated that it was going to be another hot one in the triple digits. That was fine with me since I had plans to make some bed sheets smoke later on anyway. Rainman and I headed out FM 1604 across the top of San Antonio towards the Texas hill country in search of the three ladies. We picked up Highway 16 and headed north to Bandera. Once on Highway 16 we had to slow down because of a slow moving cager in front of us. While I was in a hurry to move faster, Rainman wasn’t so worked up. As we made our move to go around, damn if the cager didn’t speed up. Not wanting to play road tag with the dude, we slowed down and let him go on ahead of us. I could still feel the touch of morning cool in the air. The sun was now behind us and our shadows were leading the way. Everything was looking good. I did noticed the shadow of my ass and figured I could stand to lose a few pounds! Damn, no time to work on that now. With the earlier cager now gone, we rode the early morning miles with no traffic. Rainman opened the throttle a little bit more and we began to enjoy the twists and turns of Highway 16. A few miles down the road we saw our old cager friend again, only this time he was on the side of the road as we rounded the curve. At the very last moment the rat bastard cager decided to make a U-turn right in front of us! Fast reactions on the brakes and quick evasive moves helped us avoid contact with the cager. I have to tell you, life as a biker never is boring. A single finger salute was given to let him know what we thought of him.

We continued north on Highway 16 through Bandera and on into Medina. We passed Medina and I began looking for my dates for the evening – three lovely sisters! It was funny and strange that morning; Rainman was not saying very much. I guess he was just enjoying the ride. A few more miles down the road and we stopped at The Koyote Ranch to say “Hi”. We walked in and were immediately recognized by the staff. It seems I am a big celebrity out there. I asked the gentleman behind the counter where I could find the three sisters. “Well son”, he said, “you just passed one of them coming in. Go back to Medina and turn right on FM 337, that’s where you will find them.” I asked the gentleman if he knew the names of the sisters. “They don’t have names that I know of, they are just known as the three sisters.” As we headed back down the road I thought to myself, “Why would three sisters not have names?” Soon enough we were on FM 337. I was getting closer to my dreams becoming reality. I looked to the left and to the right but there was no sign of any of the three ladies. Twenty more miles down the road, the landscape began to change. The countryside was green and beautiful and the roads were full of twists and hills. It was some of the prettiest country you have ever seen. We pulled into Vanderpool and stopped at the Lost Maples Ice House and Gas Station. I went inside to see if they knew where I could find the sisters. The old man behind the counter looked at me like I had broccoli growing out my ears. “Son”, he says, “you’re on one of the three sisters.” “Huh?!?” I replied. And that was when Rainman busted out in laughter. It seems that no good S.O.B and Skeeter had set me up with a cruel joke. There were no three sisters with long legs and fast tight curves out here. It was more like there were three roads with long straight legs, fast tight curves, and hills to get lost in.

proving grounds for some current products and new products being tested. But do yourself a favor; don’t get caught up in all the hype of seeing how fast you can ride the Three Twisted Sisters. The locals also warn of how dangerous these roads can be. The old man at the ice house told me, “If the speed limit sign says 20 MPH then you better be doing 15 MPH as the road conditions can change quickly.” Then we were told of a lady, less than a month prior to our visit, whom lost control of her bike on a turn, went over the edge of the road, dropped 80 feet and landed in a tree. They had to airlift her out and to a hospital but they never did find out whether she survived or not. The total distance of the Sisters is about 200 miles and it takes around four hours to complete the entire run. One good idea is to stay at one of the local cabins the night before. I would suggest the Koyote Ranch; their accommodations are very nice and they are reasonably priced. By staying the night, you will have time to take in some of the local flavor that makes the Texas Hill Country such a nice place to visit. Oh, if you do stay at the Koyote, I wouldn’t suggest trying the beer from the trough in the bathroom. It seems that they, too, like to play jokes on Pigs! You know of course I have to seek revenge on Skeeter and Rainman for playing such a rotten joke on me. Does anyone have any suggestions? Ride HARD or Stay Home!

Now for those of you who have never ridden the three sisters before, they are sometimes called the Three Twisted Sisters (that is how they tricked me). Located in the Texas Hill Country, the Sisters provide some of the best riding in the state. FM 335, FM 336, and FM 337 make up the Sisters. You begin the ride on FM 337 at Medina, follow it into Vanderpool and on into Leakey. In Leakey you can continue into Camp Wood at FM 335 or turn right on FM 336; either way you loop back to FM 337. Beautiful ranches with barns and cabins dot the countryside hidden behind huge rock bluffs and steep drop-offs. The road conditions are great; a good thing with all the steep grades and hairpin tight turns. All this guarantees that even the most experienced rider will be challenged on his (or her!) riding skills. In fact, the locals told me how car manufactures and tire companies like to use the Three Sisters as their

Crazy Al’s DFW Ride - UPDAT ED MAP

By Shelly Horan, Owner/Managing Editor Updated from the July 2009 Crazy Al’s DFW Ride

“This route is the best collection of tight, twisty roads and cool country sweepers you’re ever going to find. Enjoy views of the country side that will take your breath away. So hold on to the grips and get ready for the ride of your life!” ~Crazy Al

RIDE

O

riginally published in July 2009 with great roads, we now provide Crazy Al’s ride map, updated with some historic information and sites to see, including, of course Points Across Texas photo opportunities. “This route is the best collection of tight, twisty roads and cool country sweepers you’re ever going to find. Enjoy views of the country side that will take your breath away. So hold on to the grips and get ready for the ride of your life!” ~Crazy Al Start in the southwest corner of Fort Worth – or Benbrook – at Highway 377 and I-20. Benbrook was established by settlers from Tennessee and other southern states around 1857. In 1876 the name was changed from Miranda in honor of James M. Benbrook, a native of Indiana. Benbrook was instrumental in convincing the Texas and Pacific officials to build their line through the site. Going south on Highway 377, the next town is Cresson. Named for John Cresson, a settler who stopped his wagon train here prior to the Civil War. He returned later to open a general store and the town became a hub on a cluster of

stagecoach routes. Eventually, the railroad hit the region and gave Cresson a boost in its economy. Of interest to stop and see is the historic Cresson School and marker. The school building was preserved in the 1970s and today, it serves as a community center. Continue south on Highway 377 into Granbury. This is the seat of Hood County, meaning there’s a county courthouse for Points Across Texas! Granbury was founded in the 1860s as a square and log cabin courthouse. There are many buildings registered as historic landmarks around the area, including the Granbury Opera House (circa 1886), which still hosts Broadway productions. The city name comes from Confederate General Hiram B. Granberry. Yes, the spelling is different. For years, scholars believed this was simply an error when misreading a document somewhere along the line. However, further investigation showed that the General preferred the “bury” spelling himself. Some other claims to fame… Davy Crockett’s (Alamo) wife, Elizabeth, settled here following the Texas Revolution. She

is buried in the Action State Historic Site, located nearby. Also, legend has it, John Wilkes Booth moved to Hood County and assumed the name John St. Helen. There is a store on the historic town square still called St. Helen’s. And finally… Jesse James is buried here! Local lore has it that he met a young woman from the area, fell in love. In his later years, he returned to this happy place. His grave can be found in the Granbury Cemetery. Outside of Granbury, take a left on Highway 51, also known as the Paluxy Highway! Crazy Al commented, “The good stuff begins.” This is dinosaur country! If you’re interested in an excursion or two, save some time to visit Dinosaur Valley State Park and Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. Both are based on prehistoric times of Texas and worthy of some time out from the ride. Continue on down Highway 51, take a right on Highway 67, then another right on FM 2481 (heading north). “This is a great sweeper road,” comments Al. About 13 miles up the road is Bluff Dale. Originally called Bluff Springs by pioneers who settled nearby, the name changed when the post office was established in 1877. The site to see here is the Bluff Dale Suspension Bridge on TX 441 (take Berry Creek Road/CR 149, just a quarter mile north of Highway 377). There are also a few other historic markers around the area worth hunting out. Take Highway 377 out of town, heading south and catch a right on FM 1188, heading north. “This road is smooth and very fast,” indicates Crazy Al. About 8 miles up the road, hang a right on FM 1189. This is where it gets fun… as Al comments, “Holy cow, keep the blasters on full!” He further advises, “When you reach the town of Lipan, you can gas up and get a snack, maybe dig your underwear out of butt and get ready for more of the same!” Lipan was settled during the early 1850s, but formally established in 1873. The name comes from the Lipan Apaches, who reportedly used the surrounding territory as hunting ground. Out of Lipan, take FM 4, heading east. This road will curve around and cross I-20, taking you into Santo. Originally named Grand Ranch, the small town was founded in the mid-1850s. The town moved location around 1870, renaming the town to Calgando. In 1880, they moved again – to the current site – and changed the name to Cresco. Since this name was easily confused with a nearby town (Cisco), the name was changed to Sparta. However, there was already a town of that name in Bell County, so they couldn’t have a post office by that name. From there, we get Santo – named for John Santo Statti, the local Texas and Pacific Railroad agent… or possibly to honor an early pioneer of the area, John Adam Santo.

Page 14

Leaving Santo, continue on FM 4 quite a ways, but as Crazy Al indicates, “… it all goes back to rock and roll! You’re about to feel like you’re heading into the mountains.” Reaching Palo Pinto, take a break; visit the courthouse and old jail house (or cage) for another Points Across Texas standard photo opportunity. Out of Palo Pinto, the route takes a right on Highway 180, heading back east, toward Fort Worth. For your ride home, Crazy Al notes that, “This is a great road with big hills and great views.” So take it easy and enjoy!

the 1920s, the town was a health mecca. From here, continue east on Highway 180. You’ll pass through Weatherford, which we highlighted in our April 2012 Ride Map – Riding Through Texas History… and then Hudson Oaks, before returning to our starting point.

Along Highway 180 is Mineral Wells, originally settled by J.A. Lynch in 1877. The local well water became famous for its medicinal qualities after Lynch dug the first well and cured his rheumatism with the foul-tasting water. From there, Crazy Well was dug; and Crazy Water was bottled and distributed as a cure for all kinds of disorders. People flocked to the small town to drink the water and bathe in specially constructed bath houses. By

ON THE COVER

The Party... after the Party! Blowout’s Lone Star Campground * Camping for the Lone Star Rally

B

ikers from around the world will be converging on Galveston Island from October 31 to November 3, for the largest four day motorcycle rally in North America. Blowout Biker Productions will transform the Galveston County Fairgrounds into the only 21 and over campground you’ll want to be partying at. Whether you set up camp and stay or just come to party after visiting the rally, Blowout and his staff will ensure you have an experience of a lifetime. The Lone Star Campground is only a short 12 mile ride to the Island but offers a low cost shuttle to get you safely and conveniently from the party on the Island to the party at the campground. Activities include live music every night, along with Blowout’s stage contests, and afterhours campsite parties that will blow your mind.

EVENT

Finish in the top three of your favorite of Blowout’s bike games on Thursday or Friday and you qualify to win a chunk of the $1,000 cash that the Lone Star Campground is giving to the winners of Saturday’s round. You can also enter your bike in the Bike Show on Friday or the Best LED Bike Show on Saturday. If you have a large appetite, sign up to be one of the four teams of two people to take on the seven “Pounds of Pain” eating challenge sponsored by TNP Vittles and win, if you can, a 70-quart Yukon Cooler ($400 value). The Lone Star Campground has RV sites with electrical hookup, self-contained sites, tent camping and day passes available. They offer free hot showers, live entertainment, and vendors of all kinds. For more information visit LoneStarCampground.com or find them on Facebook.

Take the hint and leave NOW!! • Don’t fool with recombinant DNA technology unless you’re sure you know what you are doing. Even then, don’t do it. • If you’re running from the monster, expect to trip or fall down at least twice, more if you are of a female. Even though you may be faster than the monster, you can be sure that it WILL catch you. • If your friends suddenly begin to exhibit uncharacteristic behavior such as hissing, fascination for blood, glowing eyes, increasing hairiness, and so on, get away from them as fast as possible. • Stay away from certain geographical locations, some of which are listed here: Amityville, Elm Street, Transylvania, Meskatonic University, Camp Crystal Lake, Haddonfield, Illinois, one gas station desert towns or any small town in Maine. • If your car runs out of gas at night, do not go to the nearby deserted-looking house to phone for help. • Beware of strangers bearing tools such as chainsaws,

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. In fact, just pretty much leave me alone. There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither one works. One Sunday morning, Satan appeared before a small town congregation. Everyone started screaming and running for the front church door, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away. Soon, everyone was gone, except for an elderly gentleman who sat calmly in the evacuated pew. Satan walked up to the man and said, “Don’t you know who I am?” The man replied, “Yep, sure do.” Satan asked, “Aren’t you going to run?” “Nope, sure ain’t,” said the man. Very upset at this disrespect, Satan asked, “Why aren’t you afraid of me?”

The man calmly replied, “Been married to your sister for over 48 years. Bring it on, buddy.” Q: Why can’t Witches have babies? A: Because their husbands have crystal balls. Q: How do you spot a red neck on Halloween? A: He is wearing a Confederate uniform and gives the kids a bottle of Budweiser. How to confuse Trick-Or-Treaters: Answer the door with a mouthful of M & M’s and several half-eaten candy bars in your hands. Act surprised, and close the door. Open it again in a few seconds, and insist that you don’t have any candy. Halloween Tombstones Yetta Nother Barry A. Live Justin Tyme Bill M. Later Kerry M. Off Sue D. Bum
