I Always Work Too Hard reetings Piglet’s, I can’t remember having a summer in South Texas that was as brutal as this year’s summer. Oh, don’t get me wrong, there have been plenty of hot ones before, but for some reason this past summer seemed even more unbearable. The triple digit temps felt relentless and were constantly beating us down. I swear, watching Rainman sweat this year was like watching someone pour two big buckets of water on his head. He and I have been battling the summer waiting patiently for the cooler weather to come – it may never happen! That is not how true biker’s ever look at riding, however. It’s never too hot, nor too cold, nor too windy; it’s just you and the road with the occasional discomfort as you head down that road. For the Labor Day weekend, Rainman decided we needed to close out the summer with a couple of rides with as many people we could gather together. Three weeks prior to kickstands up, we planned, we plotted, and we told people about it. Several riders agreed and said “Yes” they wanted to go. Everything was looking good. The weather report counting down to Saturday and Sunday called for rain that weekend, and rain in the amounts that make you postpone rides! I, for one, carefully watched the sky and didn’t see much change. Stupid weathermen, it was still 100 degrees out there and dry as a bone! Knowing that it wasn’t going to rain, we decided to head out early so as we were able to avoid some of the heat. The Saturday ride would be the Three Sister’s in the Texas Hill Country. Those ladies are always a blast to run. As we waited at the gathering point, it was only Phil and Kuntry who showed up. I was rather disappointed in the turnout. I guess everyone else who said they would be there just had more important things to do; bummer. With the kick stand up, I was cruising down the road with the sun to my back and the wind in my hair. Out there on the road I had time to think about new friendships that were made this summer and old ones that had dropped away; call it the circle of life. The cool morning air made me feel alive once again. The pains of the work week are gone now; all the other worries were left behind. Ahhh… wind therapy at its finest. While our friends rode behind us, the open road lay there awaiting our approach, calling to us, beckoning us, wanting us. I could feel how the bike was fast that day, gripping tight in the turns and

what seemed like a few extra horsepower on the full throttle straightaway’s. Phil was behind us and his 1300 was having a few backfire and popping issues as he rolled down the road. Now the backfire sounded pretty good echoing off the rock walls, especially when the bicyclist’s were in the way blocking traffic. Phil made sure they heard us coming. We pulled in at the Bent Rim there in Leakey on Farm-toMarket 337. Bob had the grill fired up and the coffee ready when we got there. A couple of breakfast sandwiches and a hot cup set the tone for a good day. Bob even had a little time to sit and visit with us. All that good company just made the day even better. The three ladies were being kind to us that day, it felt like a simple ride on the complex road course. It was a most enjoyable ride. Sunday’s ride brought a couple more people out as Dawn and Carl joined in and Willie was able to make it out, too. The plan for the route was to loop around Canyon Lake. Only one problem though, there is no loop that goes around Canyon Lake and that, my friends is how the adventure begins. I plotted for days how to get around Canyon Lake. I called it “The Fourth Gear Ride” which meant you were lucky if you got out of fourth gear. What should have been a two hour run took us all morning; no hurries meant no worries. We stopped several places, ate breakfast, and checked out the lake level – in a word, low! To finish up the run, we cruised down River Road to where all the campers were staying. Rainman drove while I looked for the bikinis and tan lines. The end of the line put us at Bubba’s Big Deck on the river there in Gruene. Christine had the beer ice cold for us and the place was hopping pretty good. If you have never been to Bubba’s, allow me to enlighten you. It’s just a shack on the river where all the bikers’ hangout after their Hill Country runs. What makes Bubba’s so interesting are the river rats in bikini’s and tourists that come into the place. Add some live music with ice cold beers on the deck under the shade of those big old trees and you, my friend, now have the perfect Sunday afternoon. The time spent with our friends at Bubba’s gave us the opportunity to reflect on the passing of summer. Soon the hot days will give way to cooler temps. The chili cook-offs will start up and then the toy runs will be organized. Most important, there will be time to celebrate the one thing

in life most of us take for granted, our freedom. It is our freedom as Americans that allows us to take part in all of the things we do. Today is filled with a lot of trouble worldwide and it looks like more trouble is up ahead. We see it, yet we fail to react to it. Elected officials and politicians are proving themselves perverted in the jobs they were elected to do. But as long as we Americans can do as we please, why should we care? People don’t often do much about tyranny in other parts of the world until we lose our own freedoms and, by then, it’s too late for us to do much about it. A free man has the ability of time spent with his brother and sister together on stops along the road. Think about a few of the people you have met during the summer while out riding. Think about the breaking of bread and the cold drinks you may have shared together. Do you realize that you and your friends were bound together by only a single common thread and that thread rides on two wheels? The open road is our life blood; it feeds us and nurtures us as we grow into a whole being. The road removes the crusty old inside of us and brings out the “shiny new you”. The open road allows us to experience that one word that gives us our super powers; that one word that feeds our very soul, our very being; that one word drives our ability to love, to have honor, and the ability for our true integrity to shine through. That one word, when properly recognized, makes us real men and real women. Take away that one word and you strip a person of everything that makes them unique. Take away that one word and that is when you have total control over that person. That word is freedom. It’s time we get off of Facebook, stop talking about it, and start doing something about it. Don’t let your freedoms become extinct. Learn to stand for your rights as a biker, as a person, and as an American. Contact your elected officials on all levels. Let them know if you are unhappy about the way they are doing their job. Remember, you elected them and they work for you. You can also join a motorcycle rights organization to get into the network and know who is doing what with your rights as a biker. Don’t let someone else decide your weekend fun. Stand up and let them know who you are! Ride HARD or Stay Home

What’s in a Patch?

By Randy “Harley Doc” McCamey, Associate Editor

The

obsession begins in an oh-so subtle manner. Most of us were so young that we didn’t even feel the snare. Like me, during your formative years in grade school you probably spent some time in the Cub Scouts or Brownies or playing little league Baseball or Soccer. Soon after you became a member of such an organization, you were given or you may have “earned” your first patch. I couldn’t wait for mom to sew my first patch onto the sleeve of my uniform! Proud as a strutting rooster, I was! And that’s where it started, the obsession with patches. Years later, I earned my ham radio operators license (sorry Pig!) and became a member of Skywarn – storm chasers before storm chasing was cool – and I was given my first “real” adult patch, the classic Skywarn twister patch. I had the patch sewn onto the sleeve of my demin jacket so I could look official in my new role. The jacket has long since

Page 14

H

October 2014

been gone, but I’ve still got the patch. About that same time, I moved from dirt bikes to street bikes and the patch obsession really kicked in. I started looking for patches, not just on occasion, but with real intent! I looked for patches at every bike shop, every bike rally, and every antique store I visited. My friends started buying patches for me. I put patches on every article of clothing I had – work shirts, dress shirts, sleeveless shirts, vests, denim jackets, leather jackets, chaps – any piece of fabric I could sew a patch onto! It…it…it… became an obsession! Bike rallies became a nightmare because I had developed patch envy, a condition whereby I get depressed when I see someone with a patch I don’t have. Patch envy, a condition for which there is no cure. What I am to do about such a condition? Live with it dayby-day, I guess. A bit of 12-ounce medication always seems to calm me down, so I’ll probably keep up with

that prescription. Maybe if I sewed a patch over my pants pocket to prevent me from getting to my wallet…now there’s an idea! We all have ‘em and we all love ‘em. Patches go with bikers like, well, patches and bikers. While this article is written in fun, I know that most of your patches are as meaningful to you as mine are to me. Every patch is a marker in time and a reminder of someone we have known, somewhere we have been, or something we want to say. Every patch tells a story and I encourage you to share your patch story with us on the Thunder Roads Texas Facebook page at: Facebook.com/ThunderRoadsTexas. Also, check out the Points Across Texas Program for even more patch opportunities! See all the details at: ThunderRoadsTexas. com/PointsAcrossTX.htm.

What do you call a bunch of bikers who love to ride in a group, support charities instead of charging dues, and whose only prerequisite for membership is that you “play well with others?” Surely you’ve heard of the “Un-Cola.” This group is undoubtedly the “un-club.” After an initial weekend trip of seven friends in 2005, a decision was made to have biannual rides. The next time the group took a trip, the riders had to stay on their bikes much longer than originally planned. When they were finally able to stop as a group, one rider observed his friends moaning and groaning and declared, “We’re just a bunch of sore butts! Hey, we should call ourselves the Sore Butt Chapter!” Later a design was created; t-shirts printed, and patches sewn proclaiming the mantra, “Live to ride-ride till it hurts.” Thus the Sore Butt Chapter (SBC) was born. This un-club takes two big trips per year and a subset of the chapter often participates in charity runs and day trips. They began taking trips with no real plan, but after the group grew to around fifty riders, the founders discovered moving twenty-five to thirty people around from one place to another required some preplanning. Detailed itineraries are now emailed to all members prior to the biannual event for review. Order, or some semblance thereof, has been established in the un-club. When on these rides, the SBC loves to do tours to learn about local history. They often stay in bed-and-breakfasts (B&Bs), eat at mom-and-pop diners, and a recent addition to the tradition is the earnest search for a great piece of pie. The “playing well with others” attitude leaves a positive impression of motorcyclists on waitresses, restaurant owners, B&B managers, and whoever else they might meet. More often than not, locals want to take pictures with the smiling bikers and shiny chrome machines. Those photos are incorporated along with other documentation to create a DVD production of the biannual rides for everyone

The Un-Club

By: Elaine Fields, TRT Correspondent to share. Many fond memories are made. One of the founders’ mothers became “Biker Betty” to the group on the 5th anniversary run when she rode on the back of her son’s motorcycle – her first time on a motorcycle at the age seventy-something years young. These folks celebrated their 18th ride in (Nacogdoches on) “The Oldest Town in Texas Run”, and loved visiting LaGrange on “The Lone Star Run”, but their favorite was “The Big Bend Adventure”. It was six amazing days in beautiful West Texas. The goal is to revisit Big Bend in 2015 for the 10th year anniversary of the SBC. Their desire is for riders in the group to experience Texas, learn, and to spread happiness wherever they go. Very experienced, as well as novice motorcyclists, are welcomed with open arms. They even allow a car or pickup truck to accompany them, providing the driver of the vehicle is accepted by all as the “chase cage”. As most of us know, long rides are great ways to make

memories. During one of the recent rides and quests for pie, the SBC stopped in the small town of Castell for the night. Unfortunately there was no pie to be found for supper… for a while, that is. The woman at the Castell General Store surprised them a few hours later with two freshly baked pies. That’s making a memory. On that same weekend in Castell, they met an 89 year old woman who expressed a desire to take a ride on a motorcycle. It was Mother’s Day and that woman became “Mama Jean” to the group. Video was taken of the event and an entire section was devoted to that unique event. They sent that video to Mama Jean and they keep in touch with the family. That’s making friends. One of the SBC founders sums up the group in this quote: “Overall, we are just a group of friends riding together, leaving a good footprint wherever we go.” Or in this case they leave a good tire print.

It was good to be back at the White Buffalo Bikefest. It was a great time to visit old friends and make a few new friends along the way. A big shout out to Faith and Jill! Both girls were in vendor booths and took the time to talk to all the bikers who walked by, making the rally that much more special us all. The vendor area was expanded this year as more vendors were inside the cool confines of the coliseum. Debbie and Michael Turnbow of Dirty Goatees were glad to be back in Snyder and said, “We have been coming to the White Buffalo Rally for several years and we really love it here.” In 2013, the rally moved from its October date to an August date in hopes of getting away from cold weather, wet weather, or both! I think they succeeded as the temps were near the century mark the entire weekend. Attendance was

Page 28

H

October 2014

down slightly last year – around 3,000 – but had a bit of a rebound this year. Sandra Salinas of the Snyder Chamber of Commerce said, “We expected more to attend this year based on preregistrations and other inquiries we had received.” As always, there is loads of camping around the convention center and the live music at night kept everyone twosteppin’ and high-steppin’ to the tunes. Along with the bike show, the rally included a number of the traditional contest and competitions including a poker run and a tattoo contest. The Nervless Nocks entertained the crowd with their high wire act and what I call the cyclotron or motordrone – a steel cage with 2 motorcycles going round and round without crashing into each other. Christian and Didier rode the bikes while the lovely Ashley stood in the middle of

the cage amidst the roaring machines. The high-flying FMX Jumpers also entertained the crowd as they flew up and over a 45 foot gap between their ramps! Both will be back next year along with more events, more music, and perhaps even a cook-off of some sort. Melissa Pierce of the Chamber said they are also hoping to book a big-name act to headline the rally – can’t wait to find out who it will be! She gave me a few hints, but I’ll keep you in suspense until we know for sure! Once again the White Buffalo Bikefest gets a winning score. If you are looking for moderately sized rally to attend before school starts for those kids or grandkids next year, or if you need something to really get you in the mood for the fall rally season, be sure this one out!

The Rally at

EVENT

T

the Rally!

he annual Lone Star Rally has become, arguably, the largest motorcycle event in the United States. With around 450,000 riding visitors to the area in a four-day span, it beats both Sturgis and Daytona, each touting 500,000 visitors over 10 days.

pre-registration ends October 1, 2014 and at the gate.

While Galveston is a tourist destination, it does not have a large contingent of hotel rooms… and the rooms that are there become very expensive during large events. For those that enjoy the RV aspect of rallies, Galveston has very few options and a few years ago, banned RV parking on the Seawall.

Blowout and his team of helpers are onsite to help with your needs and to insure a great (and safe) party!

A few years ago, Blowout Biker Productions saw an opportunity, creating Lone Star Campground. They offer camping at the Galveston County Fairgrounds in Hitchcock, just 20 minutes from the rally. Add a full-blown after-hours party and this is one great place to stay for the Lone Star Rally. There are a limited number of sites that offer electric (30 amp; no water/sewer; call for availability), while the rest are self-contained. A filling and dumping station is available, as are free hot showers. For those that like to rough it a little more, tent camping is also available. You don’t have to stay onsite to enjoy the party. Visitors are welcome to join! This is a full-blown rally in its own right; complete with vendors, food, drink, live music, bike games, adult stage contests, campsite decorating contests, and other activities available for the 21+ crowd to enjoy. Ride during the day, visit the rally, and then return to the Lone Star Campground for the party! As with all rallies, this is rain or shine event. Electric RV site is $300 for the weekend, includes two Weekend Passes. Self-Contained RV Site is only $140, includes two Weekend Passes; $160 after pre-registration ends October 1, 2014 and at the gate. Tent Camping is FREE with the purchase of a $35 Weekend Pass to the Camp Ground; $45 after Page 30

H

October 2014

Lone Star Camp Ground offers special group pricing. Call them for details. Online pre-registration closes October 1, 2014.

The team would like to express their sincere appreciation for their sponsors Renegade Classics Houston; Golf Carts of Texas; Thunder Alley Cycles; Redman Communications, Inc.; Walker, Texas Lawyer; Williams Mays Custom Paint; and, of course, Thunder Roads Texas. Aaron Morrow, known in the music and entertainment industry as “Blowout”, began as a disc jockey in the early 80s. Blowout's love for people and music lead him to his career as an emcee that can be seen on biker event stages throughout Texas. His humor and quick wit keeps crowds entertained and drawn to the stage. Blowout's fans love his crazy stage and bike games. Career highlights as of yet include sharing the stage with Johnny Winters, Pat Travers, Jackyl, and many others. He enjoys organizing and participating in charitable events such as benefits and rides; where he can be found on stage as emcee and auctioneer. One dark night Bubba & Buck were walking home after a party and decided to take a shortcut through the cemetery, just for laughs. Right in the middle of the cemetery they were startled by a tap-tap-tapping noise coming from the misty shadows. Trembling with fear, they found an old man with a hammer and chisel, chipping away at one of the headstones. “Holy cow, Mister,” Bubba said, after catching his breath, “You scared the crap outta’ us, we thought you was a realtime, ghost! What the hell are you doing working here so late at night?” “Those idiots!” the old man grumbled. “They misspelled my damn name!” THE HALLOWEEN DICTIONARY • Bobbing Apples: What happens when you leave your bra off while running. • Boogieman: Guy who passes time at a stoplight picking his nose. • Coffin: What you do when you get a piece of popcorn stuck in your throat. • Frankenstein: Hot dog and a mug of beer.

• Full moon: What your repairman reveals when he bends over to fix your fridge. • Goblin: How you eat the snickers bars you got for Halloween. • Invisible Man: What a guy becomes when there’s housework to be done. Also, see “Mr. Hyde.” • Jack O’ Lantern: An Irish Pumpkin. • Jack the Ripper: What Jack does to his lottery tickets after losing each week. • Mummy: Who kisses the boo-boo after you scrape your knee. • Pumpkin Patch: What a pumpkin wears when trying to quit smoking. • Skeleton: Any supermodel. • Vampire Bat: What Dracula hits a baseball with. • Witch: See “Mother-in-Law.” • Zombie: What you look like before that first cup of morning coffee.

scared out of his wits, said, “What do you want?” The old man softly replied, “You got any tobacco?” The passenger handed the old man a cigarette and yelled, “Step on it,” to the driver, rolling up the window in terror. A few minutes later they calmed down and started laughing again. The driver said, “I don’t know what happened, but don’t worry; the speedometer says we’re doing 80 now.” All of a sudden there was a light tapping on the window and the old man reappeared. “There he is again,” the passenger yelled. He rolled down the window and shakily said, “Yes?” “Do you have a light?” the old man quietly asked. The passenger threw a lighter out the window saying, “Step on it!”

Two guys left the bar after a long night of drinking, jumped in the car and started it up. After a couple of minutes, an old man appeared in the passenger window and tapped lightly.

They were driving about 100 miles an hour, trying to forget what they had just seen and heard, when all of a sudden there came some more tapping. “Oh my God! He’s back!” The passenger rolled down the window and screamed in stark terror, “WHAT NOW?”

The passenger screamed, “Look at the window. There’s an old ghost’s face there!”

The old man gently replied, “You want some help getting out of the mud?”

The driver sped up, but the old man’s face stayed in the window.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!

The passenger rolled his window down part way and,
