Ride Safe, We Want You Around Happy New Year! As we head in to a very active Fall Rally Season, I want to take just a moment to impress upon all riders the importance of safety. Far too many brothers and sisters are being lost in motorcycle accidents. Our CEO, Bob, always tells me cage drivers are “out to get you.” While this may seem extreme, the underlying message is to ride defensively and make sure you know where the cars are and that they can see you. The latest number I saw published was from 2004 – 500 motorcyclists are killed in Texas on their bikes each year. An item of note when looking at numbers: somewhere around 42,000+ cage drivers are killed in automobile accidents in the US each year, while only around 2,200 motorcyclists are killed. Yet, reporting of these accidents is not equal. The motorcycle accidents seem to be sensationalized, while the auto accidents may not be reported on at all. I’m not saying that reporting on motorcycle accident deaths isn’t important – it is. But the reporting of car accident fatalities seems to be less than what it should be. Okay, off my soap box. Bottom line, please be safe, ride defensively, and do what you need to do to stay with us. Last month, we headed to Dallas and Fort Worth. We did a little tourism - visitng the 6th Floor Museum memorializing the assassination of President Kennedy but we got to business quickly. While there, we visited with our own Crazy Al and his wife Paula. We also met new team members, Brian “Native NYer” Scott and Travis “Blydawg” Blythe. From that trip, we are now able to offer the DFW area a “local” Thunder Roads Texas bike night. It will the third Friday of every month, hosted by East Texas Choppers are their Softails Bar & Grill. From our Thunder Roads Texas bike night fame in Houston, East Texas Choppers will bring you a huge monthly biker party, complete with tattoo parlor, live music, drink specials, giveaways, door prizes and more! We visited with Scott Leath of Thunder Alley Cycles, William Mays Paint, and Lisa Evans of Frisco Custom Cycles, along with a host of distribution points around the DFW area. All great people!! Recently, we launched the magazine onto Android phones using a free application. Issuu is working very hard to get the application approved by Apple for IPods and IPads, who has had it for review since mid-July. To access the magazine, go to the application market and search for “Issuu.” Once downloaded and installed, search for “ThunderRoadsTexas” (does not require caps, but there are no spaces). Subscribe to the magazine and you’ll get it on your mobile phone as soon as we load it up! It’s easy and it’s FREE. If you want to view it from the web in the online magazine format, simply visit Issuu.com, sign up, find Thunder Roads Texas, and subscribe. We’ve loaded the 2010 year, a full eight months so far. Otherwise, as we have done for almost three years now, you can always download a full PDF file from the home page of our website. We are very excited about this rally season. We have sponsored many of your favorite rallies’ so many, that I won’t be able to cover them all myself. If you’re interested in writing for us, take a look at the Event List (starting on page 25), pick one out, and let me know. I can help get media passes to cover the event on our behalf. On that note, I’ll also take this opportunity to say that we are always looking for correspondents to help us cover the state, even if only with a camera. We always appreciate reader submissions, too! If you’ve been on an outstanding ride or visited a really cool biker-friendly location and want to share it with our readers, please just send the story and pictures to me (email below). We may use it in the print version or in our weekly Web-zine email. Ride Safe & Ride with THUNDER!

Al “VDogg” Doss took 1st Place Sportsman Class in the Texas Scooter Times All Motorcycle Championship Drags. After being rained out in July, Texas Scooter held their popular race on August 14 t the Housotn Raceway Park in Baytown. Congratulations VDogg!!!

Harlingen, Tx... Arnold E and about 20 other riders escorted 39 soldiers from the National Guard to Weslaco National guard armory (about 25 miles away), where ALL their families were waiting for them. Even the Fire Department had a fire truck with an open hose we all had to go under! That cooled us off. We were escorted from Harlingen to Weslaco by the Highway Department Troopers and other law enforcement officers. We received a special request from friends of “Ray Ray” Torres who was killed in a by a “hit and run’ SUV driver in Lewisville on August 9. The Marie Red’s bike night on August 11 was dedicated to the remembrance of Ray and served as a benefit to raise money to help his family with funeral and travel expenses.

Music, Maps & Cabbage! love how the older I get I find myself opening up to new horizons. So many things have come my way in the past few years that have led me to open my mind and try new things. I am an old dog but I have found that I can learn new tricks. Things like new music or lifting the toilet seat! When you’re a child of the 60’s you can’t help but feel all the great bands and music only exist in the past. I call it the Led Zeppelin effect. But then along comes music on the motorcycle and my new IPhone! This is two huge leaps for me in a very short period of time. I got me a fancy shmancy bracket holder kind of thing from one of those techno crazy motorcycle internet sites to put my phone right at my finger tips. I feel like the coolest old fart that ever walked the planet. Now that I got all the trick stuff on the bike it’s now time to find some music. A buddy of mine told me about Pandora and Slacker radio! These have got to be the coolest things I have ever found. All you do is type in a band’s name and the damn thing will play endless songs that either sound like or come from the same genre of music. I have found so much new music for the road! No more CDs where you hear the same songs 20 times. No more loading up the MP3 player with the same songs you always listen to. You can teach an old dog new tricks. This has definitely made the time on the bike so much more enjoyable. I feel the urge to go psycho crazy on improving the sound system now! I love new technology! Next month all new sound system. GOOGLE EARTH!!!! Need I say anything more? Ok, I will say more. I love this thing! I have always felt like I am the Texas expert when it comes to our great back roads in this awesome state. I have hundreds of routes. I know all my favorite roads. The only bad thing is I find myself stuck on doing the same routes over and over again. I can’t tell you how many times I have passed a road on one of my favorite routes and wondered where it might lead to. Sometimes I take a chance and try a new road out; only to find out it dead ends just a mile down the road. Then a buddy of mine showed me Google Earth! My life changed forever. You see maps don’t go out in the country and if they do you can’t tell if the road you are looking at is gravel or paved. But with this new gadget you can follow your normal route on the computer till you come to a road that you have always wondered where it goes… then safely follow it and see! Holy Crap this thing is awesome. On my first ride out I made a new route that was around the same area that I like to ride but this time my route included 11 new roads that I had never ridden before. I was blown away by finding so many kick ass roads and never once having to turn around due to the road suddenly coming to an end! Here we go Page 12

again! Old Dog = New Tricks! Gotta love it! Cabbage! This may not have anything to do with riding a motorcycle but it has everything to do with good ole southern style cooking! One thing I know about bikers is we love good country cooking! They

always say we are an eating club with a riding habit! I went for a ride with my brother Robby and an old friend of his Steve Celmer. When the ride was over Steve was gonna work his magic on the smoker for us. This guy is one hell of a chef: 15-hour slow smoked brisket; crab stuffed, bacon wrapped Jalapeño peppers; and then the CABBAGE! I’m talking cabbage like it’s never been done before. This is how it’s done. Take a whole head of cabbage, cut a square hole through the head to remove the core. The hole needs to be in the shape of a stick of butter. Once removed, fill the hole with season all and BBQ spices. I’m going to try a little liquid smoke as well. Then take a stick of butter and shove it in the hole all the way to the bottom. Wrap the whole head in two layers of aluminum foil and place it in the hot smoker for about two hours. When Steve pulled this thing out of the smoker and cut the foil off, it just exploded onto the platter in a hot, buttery, seasoned cabbage mess! I love me some cabbage and I am here to tell you this was the best damn cabbage I have ever tasted in my life! Can somebody give me a hell yea! Old Dog = New cabbage cooking recipe trick! Here is another new one in my Crazy life. I have a good old friend of mine who unfortunately cannot be on a motorcycle due to a list of old dirt bike injuries. He has always heard me talk about my rides and dreamed of joining us on one of our adventures. We made that dream come true when

he bought a new go-cart! I mean race car. He got him a 2007 Mazda MX-5 with the full road racing package. When I posted a group ride on Facebook he showed up. At first I was scratching my head “A car on my ride?” By day’s end it was one of the coolest things I have ever done! So this is a shout out to one of my best friends Pat Brady, his lovely wife Kelly and the “Black Pearl,” as he has named his new ride! I know for a fact that he did not feel any different then me on that ride because all I could see in my mirrors was a huge smile on his face! Cracked me up ‘cause he was doing all the hand signals as well! Last but not least is my new sponsor. If you own a Harley with the bat wing fairing on the front then check out this guy’s windshields. I bought one for my new ride and have never been so happy with an aftermarket upgrade product ever. Just tell Jim that Crazy Al sent you to CoolCycleParts. com. This Old Dog says the adventure of riding is to ride another day!

Does the Band Play Naked? aked Biker Rallies Poppin’ Up at Nudist Resorts Around Texas Being a band with a reputation for performing at biker events, we have performed at every type of biker event imaginable: bike rallies, biker parties, biker bars, biker weddings, bike dealerships, poker runs, swap meets, benefits for fallen bikers, B.A.C.A., A.B.A.T.E., and... every type of event that starts with the words: “Thunder,” “Rolling,” “Roaring,” “Screaming” and then some. If there is a bike associated with an event, chances are we have been there. One of our most unusual biker events came a few years ago when we were invited to perform for a bike rally taking place at a nudist resort. Did he say, “Bike rally at a nudist resort?” Yep! Better read that line again. Always

naked people all around, it’s no big deal (no pun intended) you may realize that you are the one who may feel out of place with your clothes on. It’s always best to visit the websites and/or call ahead for overnight lodging facilities and other information. Most resorts have on-site cabins you can rent. All resorts I have seen offer primitive campsites as well as RV hook-ups. Like all rallies, booths are set up as vendors make their products, goods and services available to potential customers who wander by. At our first nudist resort performance, my wife Joni realized that next time we would need a taller display table for our CDs. The gentlemen were nosing around our merchandise in more ways than

When the sun goes down, it’s time to party! Strike up the band and let the good times roll! People congregate in the concert arena for fun, music and dancing. Yes... all in the nude. People often ask me, “Does the band play naked?” The events and activities I have described so far are generic to any event but the old adage “what happens in

f o r adventure, we accepted our first nudist resort gig in 2003. Since then, we have performed at numerous nudist resorts for a variety of theme parties, special occasions, celebrations… but mostly what we refer to as: Nekkid Bike Rallies.

“But how do they put on a bike rally at a nudist resort?” you ask. Easy. Just show up, pay your entrance fee at the front office and come on in. That’s it. In regards to gettin’ nekkid, are you shy, modest, or just plain chicken? So far, all nudist resorts we have performed at have been “clothing optional,” which means, you are not required to get naked if you don’t want to. However, once you get used to seeing

Page 16

As the sun goes down, most nudist resorts serve dinner in a designated dining area. Meals are often included with your entrance fee. Standing in a buffet line of naked people was something we had to get used to as well as being served by topless... and bottomless waitresses.

one.

Any riding outside the gates require clothing but inside the gate, biking in the buff is the order of the day. It took some getting used to watching bikers (and biker babes) participate in the slow ride, obstacle course, weenie bite (no pun intended here either) and other bike rally events wearing nothing but a doo-rag and a pair of leather boots. Fun in the sun was never like this! As the day wears on, the swimming pool fills with sun worshippers playing volley ball or just lounging poolside listening to music with drinks in hand. Others retreat to their campsites to hang out (again, no pun intended) with friends and enjoy cold drinks and camaraderie.

Vegas, stays in Vegas”, applies here also. All I have to say is you just have to be there in person and see for yourself. It’ll be the most fun you ever had with your clothes on, or off. If you are planning on riding naked, remember to park your bike in the shade. You may respond at: meangene@meangenekelton.com FaceBook: Mean Gene Kelton Note: Our next Nekkid Bike Rally will take place at Riverside Ranch Clothing Optional Resort in Elmendorf, Texas October 1st & 2nd. Roaring on the Internet often get asked the question, “Where did you get that?” And often times, my answer is, “On the internet.” Even in this age of high technology, many people are still very weary of ordering anything online, let alone putting their credit card number into cyberspace. In this article, I have put together three major websites that to review. MotorcycleSuperstore.com, CompetitionAccessories. com, and Jafrum.com, are all great online stores, but also different in price pointing, gear types, and overall business models. Below are some categories that I put these e-commerce sites against each other.

Competition Accessories – They are currently the leading source for motorcycle helmets and it shows. With almost every brand possible, Competition Accessories is the #1 retailer of the Shoei Helmets. Additionally, out of the three websites, they also have the largest inventory and selection of all major motorcycle branded gear. Jafrum – The roots for Jafrum is their leather goods, including saddlebags. They have a great selection of ‘old-school’ leather jackets and cruiser type saddlebags. Many

Warranty. 115% Low Price guarantee: just email them with the lower price and Jafrum will provide the difference plus 15% bonus. Free shipping over $100 to the 48 continental states. For general price and savings the winner is Jafrum. Customer Service / Return Policy – Not everything fits and since you can’t try things on, you sometimes end up with

an item that won’t work for your needs. Motorcycle Superstore – 60-day return policy. Their customer service representatives are friendly and quick. You can even just fill out a form online to initiate the return.

Layout & Ease of Shopping – One of the things I look for in a website is how easy I can find a product. Motorcycle Superstore – Overall layout is great with a navigation bar on the right side of the screen that allows easy access to item location. Items are sorted by type and by brand. The site allows for Order Status tracking and also holds historical orders. Lastly, they have a robust user reviews section and rating that allows a buyer to see what other people think about a particular product. Competition Accessories – Out of the three they are the most colorful. Their front page has sections like “Today’s Deals”, “Best Sellers”, and “New Arrivals”. A navigation bar on the top of screen offers gear in the type of bike you ride. Users can even sign up for email specials. Jafrum – This website layout is a composite of the other two, while maintaining a very clean look. The front page is very basic in general but has features of both of the other two websites. From the three websites the best layout and shopping ease would be Motorcycle Superstore. Selection and Gearing – If you’re going to shop, you want sites that offer a wide selection of what you’re looking for. Motorcycle Superstore – Besides having a very large inventory and gear selection for motorcycles, they provide watercraft products. They also boast a nice selection of casual clothing for regular wear. Page 20

H

September 2010

of their items are off-branded or non-branded items that equates to significant savings to the shoppers. The winner of this category is definitely Competition Accessories. Pricing / Shipping – Pricing is all important to the internet shopper. We expect good deals. Motorcycle Superstore – The regular pricing is great and usually bottom-line. However, if you find a lower advertised price from any authorized U.S. dealer on an in-stock product, call or email and they will match any verifiable price. Free Shipping for product sales over $89 to the 48 continental states. Competition Accessories – Out of the three, they are the only one without a lowest price guarantee, but they do price match and have great pricing on items in general. Additionally, the Closeouts and the Bargain Room provide additional savings. Free Shipping on orders over $100 to the 48 continental states. Jafrum – All items are backed up with a 2-Year Jafrum

Competition Accessories – 30-day return policy. The shortest amount of time frame of all three as far as return policy. Jafrum – 60-Day money back guarantee. No hassle return policy and in most cases they will pay for the shipment costs back as well. I have returned items to all three places before and never had any problem with any of them, but I must say the easiest return I had was with Motorcycle Superstore, and so they win in this category. Conclusion: Who wins the best motorcycle store online? In reality, all three of these online stores are great for finding what you need or want. It just depends on what you are looking for. I peruse these sites looking for bargains, deals, and presents for friends and family all the time. It is even great when you can get them to compete each other for the price. So as always, ride safely and “See you on the high ground!”

ake a scenic and historic ride while visiting the Oldest Town in Texas (OTT) Rally in Nacogdoches (September 17-19). This route offers a two-and-a-half hour ride that will take you through small towns, Angelina National Forest, and historic San Augustine. Stay on the route for a nice ride or make stops along the way; either way, ride safe and ride with THUNDER! The OTT Rally grounds are located at the Nacogdoches County Expo Center (NW Stallings Drive at Old Tyler Road on the northwest side of town). From there, take Old Tyler Road through the red brick streets of Downtown Nacogdoches or take NW Stallings Drive (Loop 224) around to the southeast corner of town, catching Highway 21 (Main Street) heading South toward San Augustine. About 7 miles out, turn right on FM 226, heading toward Woden. The community was known for a time as Jacobs and later as King’s Store. A post office was established in 1886, and the name was changed to Woden, after the father of the Teutonic gods. The town prospered as a lumbering center, but the collapse of the lumber industry in the 1930s, began a gradual decline. While it’s not on any list as

such, Woden is effectively a ghost town with a very active fire department. Just don’t blink… Continue down FM 226 through the little town of Etoile (pronounced “et-twah-luh”; meaning “star” in French). Then about 11 miles from there, turn right on Highway 103. You’ll cross over the first of two bridges, on the northern portion of Lake Sam Rayburn. Once over the bridge, you’ll go another 3 miles and take a left on FM 1669, heading south towards Huntington. Huntington was established in 1900; named for Collis P. Huntington, the chairman of the board of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Huntington, Speaking of bikers… and to plug another Thunder Roads Texas sponsored event… the winner of the 2007 Boo Benefit’s bike giveaway, Sallie Mooney, is from Huntington!

like nearby towns in Angelina County, was carved from virgin forests during the height of the Texas pine timber industry. In June 1900 the town site was laid out and lots were sold at public auction. According to the Handbook of Texas Online, “Many people became drunk at this auction and a free-for-all ensued.” Sounds like a bunch of bikers to me! FM 1669 becomes Main Street in Huntington. After going through the downtown area, you’ll pick up Highway 69. If you read last month’s map article – a reminder to not steal the signs! Take a left and head south. About 5 miles out of Huntington, you’ll enter the western edge of the Angelina National Forest. In 1934, the Texas Legislature approved a resolution to urge federal purchase of land to create National Forests in Texas. In 1935, acquisition began on Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, Angelina, and Sabine National Forests. Longleaf pine is the predominant cover type in the southern portion, while loblolly and shortleaf pine are the dominant types in the rest of the forest. Archeological sites have been located and excavated, including sites documented and recorded before losing them when constructing the lake. These sites indicate man has had a presence in the area for more than 8,000 years. Hundreds of wildlife species exist in the ThunderRoadsTexas.com

The 153,179-acre Angelina National Forest lies at the Neches River Basin and on the north and south shores of the Sam Rayburn Reservoir, a 114,500-acre lake on the Angelina River formed by the construction of the Sam Rayburn Dam in the early 1960’s.

Forest, including the redcockaded woodpecker, an endangered species found throughout the Forest. When the Angelina National Forest was established, most of the land was severely cut-over and almost no commercial timber was left standing. Today, the Angelina is second-growth or third-growth forest and most of the land is very productive for growing trees.

Lorenzo de Zavala, a Mexican rancher, politician, and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence who served as the first VicePresident of the Republic of Texas.

When leaving San Augustine, catch Highway 21

Go about 8 miles and cross the second of the two bridges over Lake Sam Rayburn. You’re still in the National Forest, so enjoy the view! Once across the lake, continue on 147 into Broaddus, which is known as the Gateway to Lake Sam Houston. It was founded around 1904 as a station on the St. Louis Southwestern Railway. Born in Broaddus was Lance C. “Wildcat” Wade, a WWII fighter ace who served in the British Royal Air Force (RAF). Due to heavy losses during the Battle of Britain, the RAF recruited American pilots for its war effort. This recruitment program resulted in 240 American pilots who flew and fought for Lance C. Wade is credited with 23 aerial victories flying Hawker Hurricanes and Supermarine Spitfires. Texas-based, Texas-focused, Texas PROUD!

Once through downtown Zavalla, catch Highway 147, taking a left (the only way you can turn).

About 7 miles past Broaddus, Highway 147 combines with Highway 103 for about a half mile, then 147 splits back off and continues northward toward San Augustine. Here’s where San Augustine is the county seat of San Augustine the bulk of our historic tour County and as such – the county courthouse (100 W. takes place. Located on the Columbia Street) is a qualified destination point in our heading west. El Camino Real (the King’s Points Across Texas reader rides program!! About 15 Highway), San Augustine miles out, you’ll has deep roots in Texas history pass Chireno. You can take a little side trip and visit this and a lot of buildings on the National Register of Historic quaint little town. Spanish pioneers first settled north of Places. On Columbia Street alone, there are a number of the site in 1790 on grants they received from the Spanish houses you can view, such as the Colonel Stephen William Blount Home. What to Do at the Scene of a Motorcycle Accident Courtesy of LawTigers, Farrar & Ball, LLP

Y

our safety and the safety of others involved in a motorcycle accident are of primary concern. However, when possible, the information you are able to gather at a motorcycle accident scene can have a positive impact on the success of any future claim you may file. The Law Tigers national network of motorcycle accident attorneys has provided the following suggestions about what you can do when an accident occurs: Secure the Scene If you have been in a motorcycle accident, remain at the scene unless you require immediate medical attention. If you are able to do so, check those involved in the accident for injuries and administer first aid. Call an ambulance and the police, if necessary. Try to notify oncoming traffic to proceed with caution by placing flares or using vehicle hazard lights. Obtain Information from Driver(s) Write down the names, addresses, and phone numbers of individuals involved in the accident as well as their, vehicle license plate, drivers license, and registration numbers. Obtain their insurance information (company names and policy numbers). Identify Witnesses In addition to obtaining the personal information of the other drivers involved in the motorcycle accident, write down the names, phone numbers, and addresses of any witnesses at the scene, and try to get their written statements detailing what each saw. Making Comments and Statements Do not discuss the accident with anyone except the police officer investigating the scene. Do not admit liability, even to the officer. Any statement you make could be used against you later, so you want to make sure you stick to the facts and let the investigation determine who is at fault. In the case of an injury accident, reserve any statements for your motorcycle accident attorney. Ask the investigating officer to provide you with his or her business card and the incident number so that you can obtain a copy of the accident report. If you are arrested and taken into custody, do not resist. An arrest does not automatically constitute civil liability. Once again, refrain from making any statements until you contact a motorcycle accident lawyer. Notes and Pictures While the events are fresh in your mind, write down the significant details of the accident, including where and how it occurred, road and weather conditions, whether or not

Texas-based, Texas-focused, Texas PROUD!

traffic control devices were present, and posted speed limits. Draw sketches or take photographs of the motorcycle accident scene to record skid marks, the position of the vehicles involved, and other physical evidence that is likely to disappear after the accident.

You can visit Farrar & Ball, LLP, a Law Tigers licensee while at the Lone Star Rally. They’ll have two booths set up. Visit them and get your FREE Biker Benefit Card to keep handy while riding. When to Leave the Scene Unless you are seriously injured and require immediate medical attention, remain at the motorcycle accident scene to assist others who may be injured. Call an ambulance, if needed. Secure the area and contact the police. Once you have cooperated with the police and collected the necessary personal information from other drivers and witnesses, you may leave the scene. See your doctor immediately. Even serious injuries may not be apparent until well after the accident. Notify Insurance Company Notify your insurance company of the accident immediately. Make sure you document this notification. If you fail to alert your insurance company of the accident, it may have grounds to deny any accident claims you file. Do not make any statements without first consulting your Law Tigers

attorney. Insurance Claims Any insurance claims made against you should be referred to your insurance company. Forward all insurance papers you receive to your insurance company. Under no circumstances should you pay or promise to pay any claimant, nor sign any documents prior to consulting with your Law Tigers attorney. Contact a Law Tigers Motorcycle Accident Lawyer for More Information Your safety and the safety of others is the most important consideration following a motorcycle accident. Beyond that, preserve as much information from the scene as possible and contact a Law Tigers motorcycle accident attorney to help ensure that you receive the compensation you deserve.

THR ARTICLE By Johnny Dee

T

he Texas Honor Ride (THR) is holding their 5th Annual Main Fundraiser Saturday September 25, 2010. For the second year it will be hosted by the West Conroe Baptist Church on North Loop 336 just off of I-45 and Highway 105 in Conroe. As in the past, the fundraiser will feature the famous police escorted “Ride to Nowhere” through the scenic piney woods that ends up back at the church. After the ride, enjoy live music, food (BBQ this year), entertainment, displays, and both live and silent auctions. The THR store will be open with great merchandise, including the popular THR disciple crosses. Wounded soldiers and their families are VIP guests and enjoy meeting the riders. THR board members and volunteers have been working hard on this event. They are hoping this year will be their biggest and best fundraiser to-

date and a day of fun for all. All proceeds raised go to support Wounded Warriors recovering at the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). The BAMC is one of two US military trauma hospitals for critically wounded soldiers and is the military’s primary burn trauma center. Wounded soldiers spend months or even years at the BAMC receiving treatment for their wounds. Support for these brave men and women is needed today; more so than ever before. The number of wounded soldiers has grown over the last few months, with the increase of troops in Afghanistan. Funds raised by the Texas Honor Ride go to the Warrior and Family Support Center (WFSC) at the BAMC where staff and counselors

administer the funds to our wounded. They work with our wounded daily and know the needs of each soldier and their family. Decisions on assistance can be made immediately as the funds raised by the THR are already at BAMC when a wounded soldier arrives. Our efforts are a first line of charitable support available to our wounded soldiers and their family. Once a wounded soldier arrives at BAMC their families are encouraged to come and help with their loved ones recovery. Our wounded recover much faster having their primary family there to support and encourage them. While the government covers medical and living expenses of our wounded, they do not cover expenses the families need be on hand and support our wounded as they recoved. These

loved ones’ recovery. Your support of the Texas Honor Ride makes a difference and is needed now more than ever.

I have the privilege of traveling with Gayle Glasgow and Gary Fisher, who visit wounded at the BAMC regularly. Gayle is known as “The Quilt Lady”, as she brings beautiful handmade quilts to our wounded soldiers. Gary hands out Patriot Guard Rider challenge coins and Texas Honor Ride Disciple Crosses. Gayle and Gary have made it their mission to let our wounded know that America appreciates the sacrifices they have made and that we care about them. Every time I have been to the BAMC I’m always amazed at the indomitable spirit our wounded have. The question to them is not if they will get better but when and they work hard every day to do so. I have also noted out that funds the Texas Honor Ride raises are being used as intended – to help those families be present and able to assist their

Rodeo - Biker Style! By Shelly Horan, Editor

I

’ve been rodeo-ing most of my life. I grew up in Houston with the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. My mom, a native Houstonian, still calls it the “Fatstock” show. I’ve long said there is a correlation between cowboys and bikers. We wear boots, ride horses, drink beer, love BBQ, and often share the same vendors (leather, accessories, etc)! But when say “rodeo,” my mind conjures up horses, cows, calf scrambles, huge vendor show, BBQ, and live music. So when we headed to the Easyriders Rodeo Tour & Rally in Columbus (July 30-August 1), I figured it would be different, but with all the fun I’ve come to expect from a “rodeo”! We saw barrel races done on steel horses. There were tractor pulls… of sorts. Two classes: trikes and bikes, pulling 500 pound blocks with a total overall pull distance determining the winner. Bar stool

races seemed to be the crowd favorite. The contraptions provided are basically bar stools on steroids! Simply attach a bar stool to a motor, climb on a track made of dirt and lined with hay, then watch them go. Funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time! Dr. Blasphemy was the Emcee in all of the events and hosted the bands on stage. He did a GREAT job! While there were no animals (well, those of the four-legged kind), there were many similarities between rodeos; there was food, vendors, live music, and lots of people having fun. The Christian Motorcyclist Association (CMA) hosted the bike show and you should have seen the entries! What a range of beautiful bikes! And adding to the rodeo feel – Monster Truck rides and a Monster Truck Show. Of course, it wasn’t just a rodeo, it was a biker rally! With that comes a wet T-shirt contest and the traditional biker games. Add an Uncle Kracker signed guitar giveaway and it was one heck of a rally. Okay, so this wasn’t my momma’s “Fatstock Show”! The band line up was GREAT, Shaye, Yankee Slickers and Joshua Adams; topped off with headliner, Uncle Kracker. Many of you probably already know this, but I didn’t, so I’m going to share. I always wondered how’d the guy get his name “Uncle Kracker”? His real name is Matthew Shafer. When he

Page 40

was ten-years old, he was a fan of rap music, specifically the Fat Boys. At the time, his brother was a DJ who often competed with Kid Rock, who DJ’d at the same dime. Though younger, thanks to “teen nights” at his brother’s club, Matthew hung around with Kid Rock and they became fast friends. Somewhere in there, Kid Rock dubbed Matt with the moniker, Kracker, and it stuck. When Matthew was ready to release his first solo album, he couldn’t use Kracker, as a rock band was already using it. So, he added “Uncle.” While it was a very hot weekend, 104 degrees in the shade, everyone was having a great time! The music pavilion was the place to be; in the shade, with live music and cold beer served by beautiful women. A special thank you to Brinder of the Lone Star Rally for setting us up with VIP wristbands to enjoy the backstage faire and meet Uncle Kracker!

quiggy and his wife, Joletta, are having hard financial times, so they decide she’ll become a hooker. She’s not quite sure what to do, so Squiggy says, “Stand in front of that bar and pick up a guy. Tell him a hundred bucks. If you’ve got a question, I’ll be parked around the corner.” She’s not there five minutes when a guy pulls up and says, “How much?” Joletta says, “A hundred dollars.” The guy says “Dang, All I’ve got is thirty.” She says, ”Hold on.” She runs back to Squiggy and says, “What can he get for thirty dollars?” Squiggy ponders and says, “A hand job”. She runs back and tells the guy all he gets for thirty dollars is a hand job. He says okay, so she gets in the car, he unzips his pants, and out pops an astonishingly HUGE pecker. Joletta stares at it for a minute, and then says, “I’ll be right back.” She runs back around the corner and says breathlessly, “Squig, you reckon you can you lend this guy seventy bucks?”

A

little boy and a little girl attended the same school and became friends. Every day, they would sit together to eat their lunch. They discovered that they both brought chicken sandwiches every day! This went on all through the fourth and fifth grades, until one day he noticed that she didn’t bring a chicken sandwich. He said, “Hey, how come you’re not eating chicken, don’t you like it anymore?” She said “I love it but I have to stop eating it.” “Why?” he asked. She pointed to her lap and said “Cause I’m starting to grow little feathers down there!” “Let me see” he said. “Okay,” and she pulled up her skirt. He looked and said, “That’s right. You are! Better not eat any more chicken.” He kept eating his chicken sandwiches until one day he brought peanut butter. He said to the little girl, “I have to stop eating chicken sandwiches. I’m starting to get feathers down there too!” She asked if she could look, so he pulled down his pants for her. She raised her eyebrow at him and said “Oh my, it’s way too late for you! You’ve already got the neck and the gizzards.”

T

his morning on the freeway, I looked over to my left. There was a woman in a brand new Cadillac doing 65 MPH with her face up next to her rear view mirror, putting on her eyeliner. When I looked back she was halfway over in my lane, still working on that makeup! As a man, I don’t scare easily, but she scared me so much, I dropped my electric shaver, which knocked the donut out of my other hand. In all the confusion of trying to straighten out the car using my knees against the steering wheel, it knocked my cell phone away from my ear, which fell into the coffee between my legs; splashed and burned “Big Jim and the Twins. “ It ruined the damn phone, soaked my trousers, and disconnected an important call. Damn women drivers!

W

hen little Spike returned home from elementary school, he told his Dad he got an F in math. “Why?” asks the father?

“The teacher asked ‘How much is 2x3’, I said ‘6’, replies Spike. “But that’s right!” says his dad. “Yeah, but then she asked me “How much is 3x2?’” “What’s the f***ing difference?” asks the father.

A

flight attendant was stationed at the departure gate to check tickets. As a man approached, she extended her hand for the ticket and he opened his trench coat and flashed her. Without missing a beat… she said, “Sir, I need to see your ticket, not your stub.”

O

ne day a man came home and was greeted by his wife dressed in a very sexy nightie. “Tie me up,” she purred, “and you can do anything you want.” So, he tied her up and went for a ride on his Harley.

I

went to the store the other day, and I was in there for only about five minutes. I came out there was a cop writing a parking ticket.

So I went up to him and said, “Come on, buddy, how about giving a guy a break?” He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. So I called him a pencil-necked Nazi. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for worn tires! So I called him a piece of horse crap. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket! This went on for about 20 minutes... the more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote. I didn’t care. My bike was parked around the corner.

G

rizzly Pete is out for a ride… the day is beautiful and he’s looking forward to getting out on one of his favorite roads. Unfortunately, on his way out of town, a cager cuts sharply in front of him to pull into a left-turn lane, and only his skill and years of experience keep him from losing control and dumping the bike, finally managing to wrestle his ride to a safe stop. Angry, he reaches into a saddlebag, pulls out a tire iron and throws it with all his considerable might. It smashes through the rear window of the cage and whacks the driver on the back of the head, knocking him out. The vehicle loses control and eventually smashes into a tree --the cage is totaled and the driver is put into the hospital for weeks. Some time later at his trial, the prosecuting attorney is cross-examining Grizzly Pete on the stand and finally just asks “Why?! Why did you do it?!” Grizzly Pete thinks for a moment, then starts beaming and says “I didn’t see him!”

T

he kids filed back into class Monday morning. They were all very excited to relay the results from their assignment. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then give a talk on productive salesmanship. Little Sally led off, “I sold Girl Scout cookies and I made $30,” she said proudly, “My sales approach was to appeal to the customer’s civil spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success.” “Very good,” said the teacher. Little Jenny was next, “I sold magazines,” she said, “I made $45 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events.” “Very good, Jenny,” said the teacher. Inevitably, it was Little Johnny’s turn. The teacher could only sigh and hold her. Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacher’s desk. “$2,467,” he said. ”$2,467!” cried the teacher, “What in the world were you selling?” “Toothbrushes,” said Little Johnny. “Toothbrushes!” echoed the teacher, “How could you possibly sell enough toothbrushes to make that much money?” “I found the busiest corner in town,” said Little Johnny, “I set up a dip & chip stand and gave everybody who walked by a free sample.” They all said the same thing, “Hey, this dip tastes like dog poop!” Then I would say, “It is dog poop…wanna’ buy a toothbrush?”
