Election time is near, which brings a lot of political opinions flying about. Bob & I have our own opinions, but run the magazine apolitical. Our belief is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and no one should trash someone else’s right to that opinion. In this issue, Pig writes about the Texas Confederation of Clubs’ US Defenders and Coalition of Independent Riders; and Terri Williams writes about the extent of the work being done by the Texas Motorcycle Rights Association. These groups of individuals have dedicated their time and efforts on a voluntary basis to fight for motorcyclists’ rights in Texas. You may or may not agree with everything they fight for, necessarily. So we remind you that all articles that contain opinions are the opinions of the writers and not necessarily those of the magazine. We stand by everyone’s right to choose – whether it be how they ride, how they deal with their own safety on their bike, etc. So… back to our regularly scheduled programming! It’s September and the Fall Rally season has officially begun. Between now and mid-November, every weekend is full of events around the entire state. The types range the whole gamut. To help, this month we have gathered all the event ads, upcoming event articles, event list, and calendar into a single section starting with page 21. Take a look, mark your calendars, and make your arrangements. Speaking of arrangements, Galveston officials have banned RV parking on the Seawall during the Lone Star Rally this year. So, if you’re coming in an RV and need a place to park, might we suggest the Lone Star Campgrounds in Hitchcock (just about 20 minutes away from the Rally site)? Along with the site comes live music Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, with “after-hours” parties every night. We remind you that the deadline for submitting Points Across Texas pictures to be included in the drawing for a FREE weekend stay at Koyote Ranch is October 31, 2012. Each picture gets an entry into the drawing. So even if you haven’t finished getting the 10 pictures necessary to receive a FREE patch, you can still send the pictures in for the drawing. Honoring Officer Jaime Padron Austin * April

Did you see us? Spring 2012 Not Regulators, Reguladores! (Yes, we’re aware it’s the same word in a different language.) Reguladores, defined as control or someone who governs. The Reguladores LEMC is a law enforcement motorcycle club. That being said, we’re not all cops. In fact, some of us don’t even like donuts. We’re a diverse group of individuals who are dedicated to serving the local community and riding the open roads every chance we get. Starting this month, the West Houston chapter will be writing a monthly article on local events we’ve attended, upcoming events we’re marking in our calendars and rides we’ll be hosting for you! Recently, the Reguladores West Houston Chapter participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, a 39.3 mile walk to raise money for breast cancer research and prevention. Most of the club served on the motorcycle safety crew, helping to keep all the walkers safe during their two day trek to save the ta-ta’s. The event raised $2 million, and half was immediately given to local hospitals, charities and foundations including the beloved Rose Foundation who received a $200,000 check. Whoop whoop!

Back the Badge

Almost by accident, or maybe providence, I was fortunate enough to witness the 18-mile long funeral procession for Austin Police Officer Jaime Padron on Wednesday April 11th. Padron was senselessly killed the week before as he attempted to apprehend a suspect for petty theft – one man’s life for a few dollars worth of stolen property. The procession was lead by a hundred or so motorcycle officers and the hearse was escorted by four additional motor officers. It was good to see support for the Pardon family by so many brothers and sisters on two wheels. I was proud, and sad, to be witness to the occasion and to pay tribute to a man I had never met, yet a man who was upholding the laws of our great land so the rest of us could live to ride another day. Standing on the overpass watching the procession roll by, I was proud to honor Officer Padron and his family that day, to represent Thunder Road Texas on such an occasion, and, in some small way, to be a representative of the community of Texas bikers to say goodbye to an honorable man. After the procession made its way through Austin, it headed west to San Angelo for the burial. Rest in Peace, Office Padron. Relay for Life

You may have seen us: at Relay for Life, Back the Badge, Harley’s Angels 10th Year Breast Cancer Benefit. Holler at me! What events do you want us to attend? Did ya see us? Where’ve you been riding? ‘Till next month, keep the paint up and the rubber down.

Had a great time at the 4th Annual Bikers Against Breast Cancer Ride for the Rose. (The Rose is the Houston area’s leading 501(c)(3) non-profit breast cancer organization providing mammography screening, diagnosis, access to treatment and support to all women regardless of their ability to pay.) Hundreds of riders came out on what started as a rainy day to support the cause. The police escorted ride started at San Jacinto Harley Davidson and rode a 70 mile loop through Pasadena, Seabrook, La Porte, and Baytown, ending back at San Jacinto Harley in Pasadena for food, music, and fun. Additional ride security was provided by the Warriors for Charity Motorcycle Club. It was good to see the clubs support this cause; I was able to get a few groups together for pictures (Outcast’s out of Humble & Warriors for Charity).

I appreciate the effort made by the organizers to find a route through this area that afforded us to ride through some of the more scenic parts of these cities and minimize the time spent in congested areas. That is a really tall order for this part of greater Houston area. If you have never ridden in a large group, this is one of the best rides to get started. This is the 4th year in a row for an incident free ride that should only keep improving.

Oh NO! My Bike has Been Stolen! ccording to The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), a motorcycle is stolen in the US about every 9.4 minutes. Thieves are always on the lookout for an easy target that can be quickly stolen and sold or stripped down for fast cash. Skilled criminals can steal your bike in a matter of seconds. Make your bike less tempting to thieves by adding security devices by KryptoniteLock.com such as disc locks, cable locks, or U-locks. Install alarms or other anti-theft devices that kill the ignition or starter. No single security method is guaranteed to prevent theft; that’s why installing multiple layers of protection is important. It takes time for thieves to defeat a combination of anti-theft devices, and that means it’s more difficult to steal your bike without being detected. In general, motorcycle theft is a seasonal crime related to warmer months, as July and August have the most motorcycle thefts. December, January, and February were the months with the fewest motorcycle thefts. A former motorcycle thief confessed, “Bad weather, rain, and wind work in his favor”. However, if it’s your bike the month or season will not matter if it is stolen. The plain fact is if you do not safeguard your bike someone will steal it.

The top five makes stolen are Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Harley-Davidson. If you ride a sports bike like a Honda in one of those states, you should take extra care of your motorcycle’s security. Harleys tend to be more expensive than Hondas and Yamahas. Why then do thieves prefer sports motorcycles? Harley owners like to personalize their motorcycles and thieves prefer to stay away from personalized bikes that can be easily recognized. Sports bikes, on the other hand, are lighter and easier to take apart and there are thousands of them of the same make, color, and model.

For maximum protection Kryptonite, the NICB, and law enforcement agencies recommend doubling up on the Immobilizing “layer” by utilizing two different locks such as a Kryptonite security chain and a u-lock or disc lock.

The top five states with the most motorcycle thefts are: California, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, and Indiana. These five states accounted for almost 37% percent of the total bikes stolen.

When it comes to disc locks on my bike, I use the DFS 10 from Kryptonite. Most sport bikes will use the Keeper Disc 5-S2. Both come with disk lock reminder cables, new and improved high security cylinder, and a great key replacement program (just in case you lose your keys).

The NICB recommends that Bikers follow four “layers of protection” to guard against vehicle theft: • Common Sense — The common sense approach to protection is the easiest and most cost-effective way to thwart would-be thieves. You should always remove your keys from the ignition and park in a well-lit area. • Warning Device — The second layer of protection is a visible and/or audible device, which alerts thieves that your vehicle is protected. • Immobilizing Device — The third layer of protection is a device, which prevents thieves from bypassing your ignition and hot-wiring the vehicle. Some electronic devices have computer chips in ignition keys. Other devices inhibit the flow of electricity or fuel to the engine until a hidden switch or button is activated. • Tracking Device — The final layer of protection is a tracking device, which emits a signal to police or a monitoring station when the vehicle is stolen.

The Kryptonite chain is placed around a fixed, immovable object and through the frame of the motorcycle to prevent against lift-away theft. Remember that you must secure the chain to a non-removable part of the motorcycle frame. Use the Kryptonite disc lock or u-lock on the rotor of the motorcycle to prevent against roll-away theft. Many bikers are not aware of the best ways to secure your bike against the thieves of the world. Kryptonite offers options for sports bikers, cruisers, touring, sport touring bikes, on-off road bikes, choppers, and motocross bikes.

What are the US Defenders, COC&I, and COIR? homas Payne once wrote “The most powerful weapon is the human soul on fire”. He said that back in 1776 when the American Revolution began. I, for one, still believe those words to be true today. It is our very souls that give us our passion and our desires. Without the fire that feeds our souls we lose our drive, we lose our will to live, we become enslaved, and then our freedom is lost.

Unfortunately many of our elected officials have forgotten that. They try to side step us. They want to work by their own set of rules for what will benefit themselves most. That is called unwarranted infringement of civil rights by government.

What makes our country so great is the fact that Americans posses the freedom to live by choice… our own choice… as long as our choice does not interfere with the rights of others. That is what our forefathers fought for. It says it right there in the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

I need to ask you something. When was the last time you read the three most important documents an American needs to know? Those documents being the Constitution, The Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence. If it has been more than the last two years since you have read them, I would strongly urge you to do so now as it is more important now as it ever has been. They are available on line at www.archives.gov. Read them. Take in every word they say. They were written for you as well as for me. Know what your rights are as an American. Use your rights and protect them.

Our government was created, designed, and intended to be “Of the people, for the people, by the people”. That is our written guarantee; it means our voices shall always be heard. Our duly elected officials are placed in office by us, the people. They work in our house by representing us in the government. When they fail to do their job properly, we have to remind them they work for us and remove them from office. It has never been part of a politician’s job to create laws that take away our rights and our freedoms.

If the politicians are left unwatched, the rules (laws) will change, then they slowly begin to chip away at our freedoms and our rights to ride. It is our responsibility to let our elected officials know that we won’t stand for interference of our rights as riders by the government. That is what the US Defenders and the Confederation of Clubs and Independents (COC&I) are all about; protecting our right to ride. We are an organized body of clubs (COC PatchHolders) and independents (Coalition of Independent

Riders a/k/a COIR) who understand that protecting our “right to ride” is, in fact, everyone’s responsibility. The US Defenders provides a network to allow information disbursement among its members. The disbursement of information to riders is important as it enables us to know more of what our elected representatives are considering. When they decide we riders need more supervising, laws are drawn up intending to strip or remove our right to ride. When the word comes out in a CTA (Call-To-Action) from the US Defenders, we respond through grass root campaigns of letter writing and phone calls. We forward our voice to be heard that we do not agree with the new changes. Keep the fires burning in your soul. Don’t allow someone else to decide what is best for you. When a CTA comes in, take five minutes out of your day to let your representative know where you stand on that issue. Remind them that they are your voice. Remind them of how the people of their voting districts gave them their vote to get them in office. Now it is time for each of them to give back to the community and cast YOUR vote for your rights as citizens and taxpayers – and as bikers. You have that right to do so. Remember, “One Heart, One Voice”! It really does matter. And together, we can make this happen.

Motorcycle enthusiasts (bikers) are important part of our local communities. We contribute more to charities, we perform more community service, and we help out with more causes wherever we can than any other community out there. So much to the point that it is hard to decide which cause do we want to participate in any given day! I have found that bikers have the biggest hearts and are the ones who give back to the community the most. When we ride together for a cause, we pass by people on the street; they always stop and look at us. Three things can be seen on their faces as to what they are thinking. • First: Who are these guys and what are they up to. • Second: What kind of trouble are they trying to start? • And third: Wow, what a cool looking bike, I wish I had one. If those people knew exactly why we are riding, they would never think the first two, they would only think of the third. Imagine this, a world where we as riders would be banned from riding together in a group or perhaps not be allowed to gather together at a bike night. How strong do you think we would we be then? It is hard to believe that something like that could ever happen. But it is not far from happening if we don’t work together now. Respond to the CTAs. Know what your rights are. Protect your rights to ride. Be a proud American who has the most powerful weapon, the right to vote. Ride HARD or Stay Home Pig’s trusted pilot, Rainman, is a member of San Antonio U.S. Defender’s C.O.I.R. unit. And Rainman has always held a firm belief that no man should ever interfere with someone else’s rights.”

Mark Your Calendars for January 28, 2013 Terri Williams, TMRA2 (Mar/Jun/Sep/Dec)

egislative Day: Bikers at the Texas Capitol is right around the corner, January 28th 2013. Fighting for bikers rights is a full time job for the Texas Motorcycle Rights Association (TMRA2) state office and chapters. The bikers of Texas have to watch-dog every little thing that happens at the capitol in Austin. And if this state did not have the activist watch dogs, the political pit bulls, what would Texas be like? TMRA2 would like to encourage all bikers to come to the capitol in January for the bi-annual Legislative Day: Bikers at the Capitol and stand up for your rights. We want to shoot for five thousand bikers on hand this session. There is nothing like it anywhere… a sea of bikers riding to the capitol together, walking up the steps together, and marching in to meet their representatives. It makes our job much easier to work the capitol afterwards because when we work the capitol and ask them to vote for or against a bill, all that comes to mind is the thousands that stand behind us as we carry on the legacy of working motorcycle rights work in Texas. The TMRA2 also shares their knowledge around the US. We make the big changes here on the state level and then teach other motorcycle rights organizations around America how we did it. Currently, guidelines are being

written on everything from how to handle an officer pulling you over and the complaint process, to “Knowing Your Rights”. We want to educate, to teach, and to document the process. Some of the legislators who have backed the bikers the most are people like Senators Tommy Williams who helped us pass through HB3324 and Kirk Watson. Kirk rides a Harley himself and has backed us on every issue that comes before him. He actually introduced the Fusion Center Privacy Bill for us and is also fighting to keep our dedicated funds, (funds that pay for motorcycle rider training and crash prevention among other things) dedicated to just that and not spent elsewhere. Representative Jim

Pitts also has a long history of protecting the motorcycle community. He worked with Representative Norma Chavez to pass the first massive motorcycle safety bill in the state in 2009, SB1967. He too has protected the rider training money for many sessions, so it does not get taken for other reasons. These are just a few examples of the good folks that work with us when we are in session.

Texas’ Largest Indoor Motorcycle Swap Meet By Dan Harp, TRT Correspondent

S

unday, July 15, I attended the swap meet at the Arlington Convention Center. The convention center is located in the shadows of two of Arlington’s most well known landmarks, the infamous home of the Dallas Cowboys; Cowboy’s Stadium (otherwise known as the Jerry Bowl), and the home of our beloved Texas Rangers; the beautiful Ballpark in Arlington, (which should be named Vandergriff Park). The day started with a nice ride through the perpetual construction that is North Fort Worth these days down Interstate 35 West and eventually brought me to recently completed Interstate 30 for the rest of the ride east on over to Arlington. The convention center is conveniently located between Fort Worth and Dallas making for a relatively quick and trouble free journey for anyone coming from either city. There was ample room for parking since the center is located just across the lake from both stadiums. Another plus is that the event is set in a beautifully maintained, family-friendly, and safe area of the city.

There were far more parts and accessories than I could ever name here at the Meet. From chrome accessories of all types and styles to hard to find vintage engine parts. If you knew what you were after, you could find it there. Bartering and deal making were in full force as well. I must say, I made several very nice purchases for my bike while I was there, too. For example, I bought a set of HarleyDavidson saddle bags in great condition for $35.00, and a HD tank bag for a measly $10.00 more. This is the same bags that I had just seen on-line for $250.00! These folks put on these swap meets two times a year. The next one will be in January complete with even more vendors and a bike show according to Allen. The best way to describe it for me is to say it is like a huge inside garage sale for people who love bikes. I literally spent hours at this one and didn’t meet a stranger. It really is true that people that love cars and bikes are like a large extended family. Bring your buddies or your wife and kids with a little cash and you can have a good day just looking around spending time with fellow bikers and enthusiasts. Take care and ride safe.

The 7th Annual Swap Meet was hosted by the Arlington Cycle Works. Owners of the shop Allen Anderson and wife Ann, along with their son Shayne, are some of the warmest folks you could ever hope to meet. “Foot” the guy who runs the shop and holds things together is an ever present help and jack of all trades. They all kept the event going after original organizer Bob Bagwell passed away.

Mr. Bagwell was an old flat track racer who had become injured and subsequently paralyzed from a crash at Yellow Belly Dragstrip (Grand Prairie) many years ago. Through his efforts and the cooperation of since retired David Kynard of the Arlington Convention Center, they were able to put together the initial Swap Meets.

500,000 Bikers to Invade Galveston For the Largest Weekend Rally in North America

T

he Lone Star Rally’s 10th Anniversary in 2011 only proved once again that everything is bigger in Texas. With epic crowds reaching nearly 500,000 people last year, the Lone Star Rally now sits in a league of its own claiming the title of North America’s largest weekend motorcycle rally.

This year, riders can meet legendary biker lifestyle artists in the Uhl Works Booth. David Uhl is arguably the most popular fine artist in the current biker world. Danial James Stuckenschneider creates award-winning visual solutions for a wide array of national and international clients. Mark Brodie is considered “NASCAR’s Celebrity Artist”. From old-school pinstriping to in-your-face headturning pain schemes, Mark is the one to see at the Lone Star Rally. The 2012 Lone Star Rally promises to shatter last year’s record attendance as it has expanded to the restored Seawall area that was damaged during Hurricane Ike. This means even more entertainment, more vendors, and more attractions have been scheduled for this year. And remember the best part of it all is that it is a FREE event. “Sons of Anarchy” Star Charlie “Jax” Hunnam from the #1 hit TV show has signed on for an appearance at the Rally. He will be leading the nationally recognized Outlaw Dave Ranch Ride. After that, he will be meeting, taking pictures, and signing autographs for guests. Watch for news or just join the party, as he will also be involved with a couple of surprise events. “Last year in 2011, I was supposed to be at the Lone Star Rally but had to cancel due to a last minute movie commitment. Tommy Flanagan & Ryan Hurst took my place and said it was insane. I have been looking forward to the 2012 Lone Star Rally for a while now. There is no way I am missing this one.” Other features at this 11th year include not one, but two bike shows. Hundreds upon hundreds of the motorcycle industry’s top manufacturing reps and vendors will be showing off all the industry’s latest toys and products. Literally blocks and blocks of motorcycle and food vendors are there for the taking. Add in special temporary Rally bars, local bars and restaurants in the area and there is something for everyone. There’s even a special section dedicated to the industry’s favorite builders. Of course, there’s the ever-popular “The Strand Parade”. This historic street turns into a one-way route with parking two-and-three deep. For just $10, riders can show off their rides, parading down the middle of The Strand and enjoy parking in the middle of the party. Attendees can have a little extra parade fun… join the 2012 Promenade Costume Contest. For years, this has been a highlight of the weekend. Riders decorate their bikes and wear costumes. There is no charge to enter, just be at the staging area by 4:00 p.m. at 18th and The Strand 9the old US Customs building). Judging takes place promptly at 4:00 p.m., with the Promenade down The Strand immediately following. Online registration for the contest

Get away and explore the island by participating in area events, such as the Outlaw Dave Ranch Ride a 1,000+ bike police escorted ride that starts in Houston and ends at the Rally. (See the Thunder Roads Texas event listing for more information.) There is the Island Wide Poker Run benefiting the Fallen Heroes Survivors Foundation. Registration for this run takes place at their booths around the rally starting Thursday. We’re keeping to our sponsored events and providing two different short (40 miles/1 hour each way) rides to use while at the Oldest Town in Texas (OTT) Rally in Nacogdoches (September 14-16) and/or Boo Benefit in Jefferson (October 12-14).

I always like to give some history or information about the area. Since there are no small towns to talk about (and we’ve talked about Rusk and Nacogdoches in other maps), let me offer this… There are three distinct regions in this area: East Texas, Deep East Texas and the Piney Woods. East Texas has been defined with a border of the Red River from Lamar County over to Limestone County (northern edge) down south to Galveston Bay. Yes, that includes parts of Houston, Baytown and Beaumont. Deep East Texas is a sub-region of East Texas that includes the following twelve counties: Angelina, Houston, Jasper, Nacogdoches, Newton, Polk, Sabine, San Jacinto, Shelby, Trinity and Tyler… IE the northern portion of East Texas. Separate from these are the Piney Woods. This is actually an eco-region, meaning it’s defined by the massive forest in the area. Again, this can reach down to Texas. This area is also known for its rich oil fields, one of most important oil regions of the nation. In fact the oil booms only added to the rich history already established in the area. You know that history – expansion, rebellion, freedom, a rich American Indian heritage, and more. As you ride the area, keep an eye out for brown state historical markers. Texas’ marker program is one of the most proliferate in the nation, with hundreds of thousands erected during this past century. With this area’s mass of history, there are a lot of markers along these routes, as well as some great old cemeteries. I encourage you to stop and read the markers. Your butt can use the break, your brain can use the distraction, and your soul will benefit from the “feeding”. There are plenty of historical small towns around these places, too. If you’re into ghosts, East Texas is the place to find them! Jefferson itself is one of the most haunted towns in Texas. They even offer afterhours ghost tours. While in the area, be sure to go exploring. While we offer two specific routes here, there are so many more great roads in this beautiful area.

FM 343; Nacogdoches to Rusk

RIDE

First, we’ll start with FM 343 between Nacogdoches and Rusk. It’s one of my favorites. I love winding roads through our beautiful East Texas Piney Woods! Pick up FM 343 off Highway 59 North (“left turn Clyde”). There are no small town stops on this route; just a restful ride full of sweepers through some of God’s most beautiful country. Snippets of farm and ranch land, but mostly tall pines enveloping your ride.

FM 2208; Jefferson to Longview

The next short ride is out of Jefferson, heading to Longview on FM 2208. A little less “woodsy”, but still sweeping and beautiful. Catch FM 2208 just south of Jefferson, off Highway 59. After you cross Highway 154, take a left on FM 450, heading south. The route takes another jog at FM 449. Go right, heading west. You pick FM 2208 back up just a little ways down, go left heading into Longview.

I also met Denise Campbell who had been on a motorcycle about 1 month and who asked plenty of pertinent questions of the group like, “How do I take off from a stop without killing the bike?” and “Where is a good place to practice?” She received a lot of help and support from the rest of the group.

LADY RIDERS OF ABILENE W By Randy McCamey, TRT Correspondent

hen you make the decision to ride a motorcycle, you also make the decision to be hot, cold, wet, and windblown. Sometimes all those things can happen within minutes of each other. On an early March morning as I got in the saddle to travel the backroads, the clouds were dark and low and it had been raining unusually hard and frequently the previous few weeks. I hoped for the best that day. Each mile I rode, the sky got brighter and by the time I arrived at my initial destination, Kent’s Harley Davidson in Abilene, the weather had improved and it was just right for a pleasant afternoon of conversation with a

group of lady riders from the area.

I didn’t know it at the time, but the riders were from three different groups, the Ladies of HOG, the Abilene Road Riders, and the Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club. Some of the ladies are members of all three clubs! None of the ladies was terribly shy, so once I asked a question or started a topic, I just let the conversation go where it wanted. And it did not take me long to experience the wonderful diversity in this group of women riders. For example, I met Linda Fogerson who has ridden over 170,000 miles and covered 49 states in her time on two

Among the other ladies – Kim Robertson, Callie Cooper, Diana, Liz, Cindy, Jeanie, Peanut, and Gloria (Pinball) – I find a diversity of experience. They have ridden anywhere from 8 years to 42 years and everything in between. Riding experience also extends to locations and, between them, they have ridden to Alaska, Canada, Colorado, and all over the US including, of course, to Sturgis for the ultimate rally experience! Like most of us, these ladies ride as much as they can in the Texas Hill Country where some of their favorite rides include the backroads around Sisterdale, Luckenback, Kerrville, and Comfort. I also met Barbara Sapp, the Lady HOG Director and Brenda Woods of the Abilene Road Riders. I was pleased to finally meet Dianna “Giggles” Sanders of the Green Knights. I met Giggles mostly be accident via email as I was researching a ride map in the Abilene area. Giggles was ultimately the driving force behind getting these ladies together for an interview and some pictures. A wide variety of bikes crowded the parking lot; everything

from Harley touring bikes and Softtails to Honda touring bikes and a Spyder 3-wheeled trike. These ladies also have a variety of riding interests but all with a common theme – service. The ladies participate in various charitable activities including a Cancer Run, Toys for Tots in Abilene, Patriot Guard activities, and they often visit local area nursing homes and veterans’ homes and treat some of the older generation to a spin around the block on their motorcycles. Of course, there is always time for the Tuesday night and Saturday morning “meet, greet,

and eat” runs as well as the annual Flower Sniffin’ Ride to Fredericksburg. I ask the women, “Why do you ride?” Their responses are typical although no less inspiring. “Exhilaration – it’s like there is nothing you can’t do. It’s enjoying the beauty of the countryside. There is a spiritual quality to the whole experience”, says one of the ladies. “Being in control – freedom”, says another. The good conversation continued and the time passed

much too quickly. Late afternoon approached and the ladies congregated by the bikes and prepared to depart. They gave me the opportunity to take a few pictures to capture the day. I finished my pictures and as I reflected on the afternoons’ conversation, I stepped away from the ladies as I sense this is their time – a time for one more hug and one more memory. The bikes fired up and one by one, they pulled out toward their homes. Sad in a way, but it is not really the end because these are bikers, after all, and enjoying the open road is what they are all about.

So we gave him his two dollars back.” A football coach walked into the locker room before a game, looked over to his star player and said, “I’m not supposed to let you play since you failed math, but we need you in there. So what I have to do is ask you a math question, and if you get it right, you can play.”

I had the privilege of being introduced to Dean, his music, and his wild stage presence at the 2010 Texas Rally Pre-Party (BTW The Texas Rally 2012; Lake Somerville; September 6-9). When I say “wild” stage performance – we’re talking fire breathing, barefoot and ALL over the stage! I loved it so much, I bought his CD, Lady Luck, fresh off the presses that year.
