Greater Representation Makes Sense

Increasing the number of elected commissioners at the County and Port are important, appropriate, and timely actions to take. Thurston County and the Port of Olympia are facing an increasingly complex set of community challenges that require more efficiency and focus. Expanding the number of elected commissioners will help meet these requirements.

An increase in the minimum quorum requirements for commission votes from two of three to three of five will enable commissions to establish subcommittees comprised of two commissioners that can focus and discuss specific issues and lines of business. The use of subcommittees to organize and frame issues is a common governance structure embraced by contemporary public and private sector councils, boards of trustees, and boards of directors. This organizational change needs to be embraced by the County and Port.

Ultimately, increasing the number of elected commissioners will provide better representation and enable officials to develop a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing our rapidly growing and changing communities. Adding two commissioners will create more efficient and balanced decision-making bodies and ensure all sides of complex issues are heard.

Our communities will benefit from expanding elected commissions to five members.

Foofaraw!

The Chamber will join the Olympia Yacht Club to host local military personnel at the 58th annual Foofaraw! on Friday, September 9, 2022. Yacht club members transport guests to Island Home, where the Yacht Club and the Chamber treat them to a full day of games and a terrific salmon barbecue lunch. Local dignitaries honor the military personnel. The event averages two service members to every one civilian. For years, the Port of Olympia has shown their gratitude of service to our military by hanging a large American flag from one of their cranes.

Washington Economic Forecast with Dr. Steve Lerch, Ph.D.

Join the Thurston County Chamber’s August Forum and hear from Washington State’s economist, Steve Lerch, Ph.D., on Wednesday, August 10 at 11:30 a.m. at the Olympia Hotel at Capitol Lake. The event will also include a South Sound BIPOC Expo.

Lerch’s presentation will include an economic forecast for the US and Washington. He will share information about inflation, oil prices and the unsettled state of the economy.

The Thurston Chamber is donating tables (valued at $150) for our August Forum to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color-owned organizations for a South Sound BIPOC Expo. Included is a table and linen. Expo Participants will need to buy a $30 ticket for anyone attending, bring marketing materials and a representative to talk about your organization at your table.
