THE TURQUOISE CLINIC
INTRODUCTION
A very warm welcome to The Turquoise Clinic, the first fully integrative health clinic in the Indian state of Kerala. Turquoise offers a fusion of mainstream medicine, ayurveda, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to our clients, for the very best in total health care and future well-being. Balance is an absolute if our bodies are to achieve and maintain a state of equilibrium. Optimum health, by its very definition, precludes the existence of disease and dysfunction. We tend to forget how powerful an organ the brain is in human biology. With this in mind, Turquoise places special emphasis on stress management. Undue stress releases cortisol, the stress hormone, that weakens the immune system and can lead to chronic illness. Chronic stress can lead to heart diseases, strokes and high blood pressure. Countries aiming to integrate the best from traditional and modern medicine would do well to look, not at the many differences between approaches, but instead, look at those areas where they converge to help tackle the health challenges of the 21st century.
Why
TURQUOISE? Turquoise holds the view that mainstream medicine, used in isolation, is not the answer to the myriad issues encountered with personal health needs. Having taken guidance from the World Health Organisation in Geneva and, having had informal discussions with its staff, we realised that integrative medical health care is the only way forward for the provision of balanced health and its successful management. All therapies offered by Turquoise are structured to achieve a balanced lifestyle tailored to the needs of each client. The Turquoise ethos being predicated on the belief that clients must be in control of their lives, with specific emphasis on stress management and its consequences on modern living at home and in the workplace.

Chiropractic
A system of healing based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment for misalignment of joints, with particular emphasis on the spinal column. It is the most utilised health modality in the world after mainstream medicines and dentistry. A corrective neuromuscular approach is used to support joint adjustments throughout the body. Emphasis is placed on postural correction with a focus on specific key muscle groups and the nervous system. Chiropractors will also tutor patients on ways to improve their condition by assuming accountability for their own health and future well-being. Issues to ensure success of the above are exercise, nutrition, hydration and, most importantly, life style.
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
Neuro linguistic programming is an alternative choice to other psychotherapy modalities. It is based on patterns of behaviour and the subjective experiences that underpin them. Through the ulitisation of specific techniques and strategies, NLP encourages the process of the patient’s understanding in the terms of personal behaviour, emotion and language. NLP techniques are self help tools to address personal response to issues such as stress, panic attacks, addictions, depression, phobias, eating disorders, insomnia and self esteem. It is a springboard for personal development, inner growth and performance.
Clinical Hypnotherapy
This is an advanced form of general hypnosis that requires very specific skills on the part of the therapist. Hypnotherapy is the name of the therapeutic modality in which hypnosis is practiced. It involves teaching patients how to access a state of calmness but remain totally in control, enabling them to slip into a world of mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. To induce positive changes, inner motivation must be established. This is achieved by working with the subconscious mind to remodel mental and physical functions of the patient. Hypnotherapy is completely safe and cannot force the patient to do anything against their will. The therapists work with the patient to establish a set of goals. Once they have been agreed the therapist will work with the patient to realise their expectations. All emotional and physical concerns can be addressed using this modality.
Marma
This is an integral part of ayurveda that promotes and maintains health and well-being by cleansing blocked pathways and energy channels in the body. Marma treatment works on many levels, both physical and emotional. It creates dramatic change within the body. All marma treatments are conducted under the supervision of our marma specialists and address all energy related issues. One will evidence significant improvement in organ function , respiratory, neural and physiological disorders, immune system and even healthier skin through detoxification on all levels. It is a pathway for the release of neuro-chemicals such as melatonin and serotonin that improve cognitive function and promote healthy sleep.
Ayurveda
A natural healing system that goes back over 5000 years and having its origins in the Indian subcontinent. It is far more than a system for treating illness. It is a life science, ayur meaning life and veda meaning science. Vedic science refers to a number of protocols. Ayurvedic treatment combines natural products derived mainly from plants and focuses on one’s lifestyle to secure and maintain good health. Typical issues addressed would be cardiac disorders, addictions such as drink, drugs and gambling, joint pain, depression, stress, blood disorders, digestion and allergies.
Yoga
A group of physical, mental and spiritual practices or disciplines. Yoga is not a religion, simply an aid to support the natural healing processes within the body and promote emotional well-being. Western science tends to focus on the outer world as perceived through our five senses. Yogis explore the inner world, our mind, consciousness and spirit through meditation. The physical aspects of yoga promotes, not only a state of equilibrium, but employing regular yoga techniques it can aid conditions such as back pain, diabetes, organ disorders, stress, anxiety, addictions, hypertension and issues related to self esteem.
Reiki
Reiki, meaning life force, is a Japanese system of treatment that works to harmonise the energy ows within the body. When energy is blocked, or simply low, we are far more prone to stress, anxiety and our immune system can be in a state of imbalance. There are no belief systems involved with Reiki. It is very stimulative either in support of allopathic treatment or as a harmonising treatment in itself. This life force unblocks existing channels to create the free ow of natural energy.
Physiotherapy
A system of treatment using physical methods to treat disease, injury or deformity by manipulation, massage and heat treatment rather than relying on drugs or surgery. It focuses on the science of movement to restore physical strength, function and motion to induce overall well-being. Neurological conditions related to physiotherapy include strokes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, brain injury, spinal injury, dystonia, chronic regional pain syndrome, motor neurone disease, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, multisystem atrophy, spinal cerebellar ataxia, meningitis and epilepsy. The following conditions to which the elderly are particularly vulnerable but respond well to are physiotherapy, muscle weakness, general pain, stiffness and vertigo. Neurological issues related to the aging process are cerebellar ataxia, pre and post surgical rehabilitation, deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins, soft tissue damage, fractures and joint replacement procedures.
Traditional Chinese Acupuncture
This is one of the most ancient healing practices in the world. Fine needles are inserted painlessly into the skin at very specific points along energy lines or meridians of the body. Traditional acupuncture focuses more on the patient rather than on specific disorders or symptoms in isolation. Illness, aches and pains indicate signs that the body is lacking equilibrium and harmony. The aim is to restore the Qi, the free flow of energy throughout the body to bring back the balance required for self healing and emotional well-being. Typical conditions treated would be skin disorders such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. Also musculo-skeletal pain, diabetes, obesity, asthma, blood pressure, immune system disorders, organ disorders, arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Reflexology
A system of massage with the main focus being the feet but hands and ears also have reflex points to bring balance and equilibrium to the body and minds without the use of drugs. Blockages in our Qi, or life force, can prevent this natural flow and inhibit the healing process. By applying pressure to the reflex points the therapists can restore or boost the healing system. It can reduce stress by inducing a state of deep relaxation and well-being. In reflexology every organ in the body can be mapped out and treated to restore the energy balance required to optimise the self-healing process. Reflexology is extremely helpful in a broad range of conditions that includes kidney / liver, back pain, insomnia, stress and boosting of the immune system. It is gentle, relaxing and leaves the patient feeling refreshed, vibrant and alert.
Diagnostics An accurate diagnosis of each client is an absolute in determining their current state of health. We will not countenance treatment without this procedure. A diagnosis does not determine a way forward in the choice of therapies but most certainly highlights treatments that may be damaging to the client’s health at this specific point of time. • Thyroid Profile (3) Total Triiodothyronine [T3] Total Thyroxine [T4] Thyroid Stimulating Hormone [TSH] • Iron Deficiency Profile (3) Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) Serum Iron . People & Environment Our two monsoons used to be predictable, almost to the day. This is no longer the case. Exploitation of our planet can only have but one effect: Devastation. Lack of environmental action has left a legacy of ash oods, huge mudslides, deforestation and government delinquency in environmental protection. We require meaningful education before action and, to that end , Turquoise will be hosting conferences, seminars and lectures by government agencies such as the WHO in Geneva, to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. With regard to local community care, Turquoise will enjoy the privilege of supporting SISP, a registered Indian charity (NGO) founded by Paul Van Gelder and Werner Fynaerts in 1996. SISP work with the extremely underprivileged, helping turn dreams into reality. Please view its website! www.sisp.in
