Benefits

of Breastfeeding By Saint Elizabeth Health Care

You probably already know that breastfeeding gives your baby overwhelming health and emotional benefits. Your breast milk is the best possible food for your baby, and will give him the best start in life.

Breast milk is a specialized food designed to meet the needs of infants. Every time your baby nurses, you are giving him advantages in health, growth, and development, while also helping to decrease the risk for a large number of diseases now and in the future. The breast milk you make for the first few days is colostrum and is full of infectionfighting antibodies. Even when your colostrum turns to mature milk, your

the sucking reflex of a healthy newborn peaks about 20 minutes after birth. But it may take the two of you a little while to get the hang of breastfeeding. So the sooner you put him to your breast, the sooner you’ll feel comfortable. Many moms nurse their babies for the first time right in the delivery room. The newborn baby is usually alert and eager right after birth.

satisfied and appear ‘milk drunk’ after feeds. For proper growth and development, a newborn generally needs to feed 8-12 times a day. You will also notice firmness or lumpiness in your breasts before a feed. After a good feed, your breasts will feel much softer as the milk came out.

Remember, the amount of milk your breasts produce is really a matter of ‘supply and demand’ breast milk provides a natural defense against infections and allergies. As baby grows, the composition and amount of your milk changes to meet baby’s needs. Recent research suggests that breastfeeding leads to normal weight gain for your baby, which may protect against obesity later in life. And if all that wasn’t enough, breast milk offers a bright beginning because it contains special fats that are needed for optimal development. Aside from the emotional closeness you’ll feel when nursing your baby, you can look forward to many physical benefits too. During the first few weeks after the birth, breastfeeding will help your uterus contract more quickly than if you weren’t breastfeeding. Plus, nursing will help you use up extra calories to help you return to your prepregnancy weight.

Breastfeeding: How to feed? A newborn baby is born to suckle. In fact, SPRING 2011

Breastfeeding also releases oxytocin, a hormone that helps shrink a new mother’s uterus down to its normal size. For the first few days of nursing, your baby needs to feed frequently and on demand.

Is baby getting enough? Feed your baby when he shows signs of hunger. Early cues are when baby begins to wake and becomes alert and licks his lips. Crying is often a later sign that baby has been hungry for a while. Get help right away if you think that your baby is showing signs of not breastfeeding well. Some moms worry about not making enough milk. Remember, the amount of milk your breasts produce is really a matter of ‘supply and demand’ – the more frequently you nurse early on, the more milk is produced. It is normal for the baby to nurse every 1 1/2 to 3 hours for the first few weeks. Baby will be

Another way to know that baby is drinking is to check the diapers. By the first week, heavier wet diapers 6 or more times a day means that baby is feeding well. Babies often have 2-3 soft, yellow and seedy bowel movements each day. Weight gain is another way to know that baby is growing well. With frequent check-ups with the physician or pediatrician, you’ll know that your baby is developing properly.

When you have foodborne illness you could have symptoms like stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and fever.

Beware of these “Bad Bugs”

However, during pregnancy, both you and your unborn baby are at increased risk for foodborne illness. This is because of all the changes taking place in your body during pregnancy. This includes your immune system being weakened, which makes it more difficult to fight off infections.

Depending on the type of bacteria, virus or parasite you ate, you could start feeling sick a few hours after eating contaminated food, or even a few days or weeks later! People often think it’s the last thing you ate, but sometimes, it’s just not so.
