COURTYARD HOUSE Single Family Residence in Águeda Authorship: Logoexisto® Architecture Coordination: Marco Paz Colaboration: Tiago Cruz The Project for a Single Family Residence in Águeda had as founder and aggregator principle the idea of a courtyard. The volumes distribute the program articulated in a functional way. A set of outer walls complements the articulation of spaces and enhances the characterization of the place. The swimming pool complements the capabilities of enjoyment offered in the outer space. My collaboration in this project was extended to all stages, from the Schematic Design to the Construction Documents. During the verification process of the Architecture Licencing Laws and Regulations I was responsible for the preparing of all the required documents. Virtual images were conceived in Google Sketchup, and optimized in Photoshop. SOCIAL COMPLEX Equipment for the elderly in Gaia Autorship: Logoexisto速 Architecture Coordination: Marco Paz Colaboration: Tiago Cruz The Project for a Supporting Equipment for the Elderly was an extremely delicate intervention in a typical building of the traditional architecture of the Douro Litoral region. The presence of a sidewalk of medieval origin required special care in the design of the building. The overall intervention provided the Protection, Rehabilitation and Expansion of the Existing Rural Buildings. Based on a complex functional program, were provided the functions of Sheltered Housing, Day Care Centre and Home Support Service. My collaboration in this project was extended from the Schematic Design to the Design Development Phase Services. In addition to involvement in the project tasks, I developed the metric survey of the pre-existence. Images: General Model (left and right, top), Existing Rural Construction - Granary, Wall and Medieval Sidewalk (right, down) and Sketches (below).
AT1VE HOUSE adapted to All active citizens Autorship: LogoexistoÂŽ Architecture Coordination: Marco Paz Colaboration: Tiago Cruz The AT1VE House - House Adapted for all Active Citizen, was conceived as a part of NormĂŠdica 2013 in EXPONOR. The invitation came from Porto International Fair and aimed to demonstrate the possibilities of integrating the latest technologies in an inclusive and accessible environment for all. The lines are fluid and continuous. The spaces communicate with each other. The program included the design of a housing model, with outside space and parking. The plan is developed organically and the focus is in the spatial continuities. My intervention was present at the stage of design and preparation of drawings and images to build the house. Currently the space is reused in various fairs in the EXPONOR. Images: At1ve House, EXPONOR (left), Exterior View (right, top), Interior View (right, down) and Sketch of the Plan (below).
RURAL HOUSE Intervention in AlvarenGa Autorship: Logoexisto速 Architecture Coordenation: Marco Paz Colaboration: Tiago Cruz The intervention in a Rural House in Alvarenga, conducted to an exhaustive survey of the built heritage and of the various construction stages of it. The project methodology intended to follow a logic of organic evolution. A new volume will replace a masonry building with no architectural or historical interess that is hindering the existing construction. Contemporary intervention is assumed. My involvement in the project came after the approval of the Project by the City Council. I devoted myself to the phase of the Construction Document Phase Services with the elaboration of comprehensive Descriptive and Measurement Detailed Maps. I also participated in the meetings with suppliers for choosing and in the adjustment of Construction Systems and materials to the project. Images: General Model (left), Existing construction (right, top), Detail of the Intervention (right, down) and Sketch of the Traditional Coverage (below).
HOUSE IN MOLEDO Remodelation of a Sector Autorship: Logoexisto速 Architecture Coordenation: Marco Paz and Sandra Costa Colaboration: Tiago Cruz The intervention in a house sector in Moledo aimed to rehabilitate an unused division, transforming it into a qualified space to be used by the inhabitants of the house. The stone walls were used as characteristic and distinctive elements of the space. The program of the intervention also included the installation of a bathroom, with a shower area. My involvement in the process occured during thr Design Development Phase Services and included the Construction Document Phase Services. Detailed drawings of all the intervention were made. The furniture was also designed for the spot. It was given extreme importance to the artificial lighting, taking into account the fact that there is little natural light in the intervention area. Images: General view of Intervention in the Space (left), Detail of the IIllumination (right, top), Detail of the Intervention (right, down) and Sketch (below).
LONGCHAMPS HipPODROME of Paris International Competition For The Renovation of the Space Autorship: Fuksas Studio® Architecture Model: N. Cabiati, F. Stenz, R. Giandrea, Tiago Cruz The project for the renovation of the Hippodrome of Paris was a reply to an ambitious international competition launched by the Community of Paris. Studio Fuksas took up the challenge with the proposal of a new image for the place. Elements arise in the form of inverted “umbrellas” which provide shelter and characterize the place. It was given careful attention to landscape setting. My involvement in the project was framed within the regime of an Internship. In the Laboratory of Models of the studio I’ve participated in the elaboration of physical models and on the study of form. The evolution of a project of this nature was always conditioned to the results obtained in this laboratory. The models were developed by a large team. Images: Overview of the Racecourse Tribune Area (left), General Model (right, top), Detail of the General Model (right, bottom) and Sketch (below).
HOUSE OF JUSTICE Public Building in Tbilisi EQUIPMENT designing for the Ministry of Justice Autorship: Fuksas Studio® Architecture Model: N. Cabiati, F. Stenz, R. Giandrea, Tiago Cruz The project for the House of Justice in Tbilisi was a complex and “extended over time” project. The general concept for the form consists of a combination of a formal geometric base system for the functional program and the juxtaposition of organic elements - reminding petals or leaves, in the coverage. It is a symbolically important building for the city of Tbilisi. My involvement in the project was framed within the regime of an Internship. I’ve participated in the drafting of the proposed Final Model. Due to the complexity of the forms, “petals” were conceived on a 3D printer. I learned how to handle the machines and all the procedures involved in this type of process. The final assembly was carried out by a large team. Images: Overview of the Entrance (left), General Model (right, top), Building after being constructed. Inauguration was in 2012 (right, bottom) and Sketch (below).
GOUSEN TOWER Office Tower in Schenzen Winning Proposal of an International Competition Autorship: Fuksas Studio速 Architecture Model: N. Cabiati, F. Stenz, R. Giandrea, Tiago Cruz The project for Gousen Tower was the winning proposal of an International DesignCompetition for the headquarters of a Chinese multinational company. In the development of the base of the tower was redesigned and is was proposed a helicopter landing pad on the top of it. The undulating cutting line which runs two of the side walls, was redefined and the interior space was optimized. My involvement in the project was framed within the regime of an Internship. For the materialization of the new formal options, two models were developed at different scales (1/100 and 1/200). In both it was particulary intended to study the structural elements and the relationship between collective and common areas with trees and small interior gardens. Images: Detail of facade (left), Studies for the Base of the Tower (right, top), General Model of the Tower (right, bottom) and Sketch of theTower (below).
RIHKKE PARK Auditorium and Exhibition Rooms Cultural Facilities in Tbilissi Autorship: Fuksas StudioŽ Architecture Model: N. Cabiati, F. Stenz, R. Giandrea, Tiago Cruz The project for Rihkke Park in Tbilisi was an opportunity to intervene in the rehabilitation and development of the downtown area of the city. The overall concept is based on two elongated and deformed organically tubes. The tops are open and serve as entrances, of light and people. The program houses a multipurpose room and spaces for exhibitions. My involvement in the project was framed within the system of an Internship. I’ve participated in the drafting of the Final Proposed model. The complexity of the shape forced a rigorous process of planning and executing of the model. The opaque forms were obtained using the three-dimensional impression. The transparent patterns required the preparation of a previous wood model. Images: Overview of the Proposal (left), General Model (right, top), View of the Auditorium (right, bottom) and Sketch (below).
HONG KONG World Trade Center competition for the renovation of the façade Autorship: Fuksas Studio® Architecture Model: N. Cabiati, F. Stenz, R. Giandrea, Tiago Cruz It was intended, through the refurbishment of the facades and pre-existing coatings, granting a new image to the whole World Trade Center Complex in Hong Kong. Three solutions were developed in parallel until the final choice was chosen. It was selected the idea of “pixels”. That consisted of a game of salient elements on the facade of variable depths and shuffled. The connection between the various buildings has been achieved through the use of wavy coverages which allowed the introduction of indoor spaces at the top of the buildings. I’ve participated in the preparation of the 1/500 model for the final presentation and in the various hypotheses that have been designed along the research process for the final solution. Images: Detail of the facade (left), General Model of the Complex (right, top), Model of the Tower (right, bottom) and Volumetric Sketch (below).
PAVILLION GARDENS Drawing of Exhibition Pavilions Renovation of An urban area in Quingdao, China Autorship: Fuksas Studio速 Architecture Model: N. Cabiati, Tiago Cruz The construction of a set of Exhibition Pavilions is integrated in the new urban development area around Quingdao, China. The general masterplan provides a set of lines and themes for the project, as well as the accessibility to the site. The proximity to the water allows the association of the formal elements to bodies of dolphins. The very arrangement of elements allows an effective characterization of the outer space. The organization in semi-circle allows the delimitation of the area of a square. My participation in this project was based on the preparation of the terrain model for the intervention and the three-dimensional printing of the buildings of the final proposal model. Images: General View of the Proposal (left), View (right, top), Detail of the Pavillions (right, center), Detail (right, bottom) and Sketch (below).
METRO OF NAPLES “Duomo” Metro Station Drawing of a metro station in Naples Autorship: Fuksas Studio® Architecture Model: N. Cabiati, F. Stenz, R. Giandrea, Tiago Cruz The new station “Duomo” will be one of the most emblematic stations of the Naples Metropolitan Network. It is located next to the Cathedral and at the intersection of two major roads of the historic city center. Its high visibility meant that it was given special care in the arrangement of the outer square that gives access to the station. This proposal for a Metro Station in Naples was one of the first versions for this project. It was chosen the glass hexahedron with iron structure as a sculptural generator element. My participation had the purpose to collaborate in the execution of the model to present to the client. The final assembly was carried out by a large team. Images: General View of the Model (left), Interior of the Station (right, top), Sculptures in the Exterior Place (right, Bottom) and Sketch (below).
MASTERPLAN Proposal For Quingdao, China Development of new urban area Autorship: Fuksas Studio速 Architecture Model: N. Cabiati, F. Stenz, R. Giandrea, Tiago Cruz The Municipality of Quingdao has launched an International Competition for the design of a masterplan of a new urban area. The location is next to the sea, with a small harbor with conditions to be developed and to support local tourism. The implementation area is limited and can not be built in places with an elevation higher than 30 meters. The various proposals were always developed in order to privilege the shoreline with public and tourist use equipment. Several models with various proposals were produced. The overall design was worked out to reach a final conclusion. The models were used to support the development of the project and the morphological and formal research. Images: General View of one of the Proposals (left), Zoning (right, top), Detail of the Model (right, bottom) and Sketch (below).
MARNEULI House of Justice Building in Marneuli, Georgia Autorship: Fuksas Studio速 Architecture Model: F. Stenz, R. Giandrea, Tiago Cruz The project for the House of Marneuli of Justice is part of the large infrastructure refurbishment program ongoing in Georgia. The building size is average but the program is complex. Like the proposal to the House of Justice of Tbilisi, it has also a symbolic form and that could work as a reference element in the city and in the country. My participation in this project was framed in the formal search for the building outward form. Based on the spherical shape - with metallic glass structure, were studied various ways of agglomeration of the spherical volumes. The plasticity of the base form has allowed to develop a large number of proposals for the combinations of the volumes. Images: General View of the Proposal (left), General Model (right, up), Detail (right, bottom) and Sketch (below).
FIREHOUSE FireFighters of Porto Santo National Design competition for New Facilities Autorship: Sérgio Couto, architects Colaboration: José Marinho, Nuno Pinho and Tiago Cruz The project for the Fire Station of Porto Santo was designed in response to a National Competition. The shape resulted from an articulated research between Program and Landscape Framework. The basic concept took as its starting point the definition of a geometric exterior volumetry which was subtracted by an organic interior space - inspired by the natural elements “water” and “fire”. My participation was transversal to the design of the proposal and to the preparation of the elements for the Final Presentation. I participated in the design phase, preparing the study models and the final synthesis. The Final Presentation Panels were prepared containing technical drawings, virtual images and conceptual schemes of the articulation of shapes and program. Images: General View of the Interior Place (left), Sketch (right, top), Proposed Framework (right, bottom) and Sketch (below).
GAIA HOUSE Expansion of a Rural House Single-family housing in Vila Nova de Gaia Autorship: Tiago Cruz, architect Current Phase: Under Study The project for the expansion of a rural home in Vila Nova de Gaia, took into account the particular needs of a very particular client and the articulation of a clear and precise program. The aim was to the realization of a life project. The combination of all this facts should result in the creation of a particular working and research atmosphere. All steps were taken towards the formal anf funvtion establishment. The Library appears as a conductor line of the project. It is that that makes the rules of zenithal lighting and stimulates the formalism played by “sheds”” in the coverage. The wood provide a warm texture and a strongly characterization of the spaces. The shape of the house goes on the garden, enhancing his experience. An outdoor swimming pool complete the offer. Images: View of the Main Façade (left), Sketches od the Proposal (right) and Sketch (below).
VINTAGE DOWNTOWN ShowRoom aND Commercial Space Intervention In a Building in Porto Autorship: Vintage Downtown® Project: Tiago Cruz and Bárbara Moreira Vintage Downtown was founded in January 2014, in Porto, for me and the architect Bárbara Moreira. Contrary to the standardization of products visible on the market today, features vintage character pieces with history, in sync with the values of the past but with a timeless design, adapted to the contemporary spirit of contemporary ambiances. The starting point for the installation of the brand showroom is a typical bourgeois house, dating from the early last century, in the city of Porto. Two of the living rooms have been transformed into showroom spaces for vintage furniture and author objects. The ppieces interact between them and enrich the atmosphere of the place. Images: General View of one of the rooms (left), Details of the Showroom (right) and Sketch (below).
ARCH. DESIGN IV MuseuM For the city of Matosinhos Urban Shape: Equipment, PUBLIC / PRIVATE Professor: Carlos Guimarães Assistants: Nuno Brandão Costa and Camilo Rebelo The exercise intends, by a single complex program theme, the integration of acquired knowledge. Particular importance is given to the functional research of the program and the formal development. The aim is to create a museum for the city. Special attention is given to the functioning of all areas. The implementation of the building aims to provide new clues to the redesign of the site. In addition to the Showrooms, it has valences that allow it to become a dynamic place: Conference Room, Workshops and Computer Rooms. It has also a Documentation Center and a Store. It is complemented with Cafeteria with Terrace and direct access from outside. The permeability of the building, in its relationship with the outside, favors spaces of transition between public and private. Images: General View of the Model (left), General Model (right, top), Situation Plan (right, center), Façade and Sections (right, bottom) and Sketches (below).
ARCH. DESIGN III COLLECTIVE HOUSING IN PORTO Urban Shape: Housing, PUBLIC / PRIVATE Professor: Luís Soares carneiro Assistant: Maria José Casanova This exercise is an urban completion at a location where the scales contrast, the mutation of functions, the transformation of spaces and alteration of the urban equilibrium is evident. Its location is in Porto, near the “Rotunda da Boavista” and the “Casa da Musica” of Rem Koolhaas. The program provided housing areas, and Shops, Offices and Open Spaces, Public and Private, its access and parking lots. The final phase of the study consisted of a detail of buildings. It was attempted to establish a calibrated and consistent correspondence between constructive and architectural expression way. Urban continuities were privileged and were taken into account the various conditioning factors, since the solar orientation, the choice of building materials and systems. Images: General View of the Proposal (left), Implementation Plan (right, top), Photomontage (right, bottom) and Sketches (below).
ARCH. DESIGN II sTUDENTS residence and Pavilion Proposal for Architectural and Urban Renewal Professor: Francisco Barata Assistant: MaDalena Pinto Silva The exercise deals with the redevelopment of an ancient area of the city of Porto, in a precise urban context and set in the riverside area. The process started with a profound analysis of the context, from the history to the facts, to an architectural reading of the place. It increments the evaluation of the Program in order to obtain a comprehensive proposal for the intervention. The program includes a Residence for university students. Include the Common Areas as well as the Administrative Sector. At the same time, it should be created Multipurpose Pavilion and areas for Restaurants and Shops. The set should form an easily identifiable unit, and should reflect a critical reading of the territory where it is situated. Images: General View of the Proposal (left), Implementation Plan (right, top), View of the Proposal (right, bottom) and Sketches (below).
ARCH. DESIGN I Temporary housing in Porto Residence for Three Music Students Professor: Sérgio Fernandez Assistant: Luís Pedro Silva O primeiro ano do curso de Arquitectura fornece competências essenciais. The last exercise is a summary of the matters learned throughout the school year. Consists of creating a temporary residence for three music students. The questions of interpretation are explored in a program, the functions and the character of the spaces. Introduces the sensitivity to visual characteristics of the materials and construction problems. Images: General View of the Proposal (left), Sketch (right, top), Detail of the Model (right, bottom) and Sketch (below).
LAB. ARCH. DESIGN Library of Arts, Rome Building for the University of Rome Professor: Francesco Cellini Assistant: Paolo Desideri The aim is to create a Library within the Refrigerated Warehouse of the former Slaughterhouse in Rome. The terrain is strongly influenced by the pre-existence and the “Monte Testaccio. The appropriation of public space in the city of Rome suggests that the building could be a continuation of Matatoio square. This continuation is materialized in the form of stairs to the cafeteria area of the Library. The building has two entrances, at different levels, articulated in a Central Atrium. On the ground floor are the most common areas such as Exhibition Space and the Store. Upstairs is the Library section that develops three floors communicating with each other. Lighting conditions are studied particularly taking into account the nature of the building. Images: General View of the Proposal (left), Implementation Plan (right, top), Three-Dimensional Simulation (right, bottom) and Sketch (below).
LANDSCAPE PROJECT Water in “CIRCO MASSIMO, Rome The Old roots in the contemporary Professor: Francesco Ghio Colaboration: Hugo Ferreira and Maria Albuquerque A conceptual proposal was intended for an arrangement or intervention in a public space of the city of Rome. Of the suggested spaces was chosen the Circo Massimo, an ancient arena and entertainment venue in ancient Rome. This distinguishes itself through its dimensions: 600 m long and 225 m wide. The Circus came to be capable of hosting 385 000 spectators. The proposal is inspired by the ancient simulated sea battles, at the time some of these arenas. The materialization of the concept implies to bring the Tevere river into the city, filling the arena with water. To emphasize the idea we created a set of platforms with free program. It also recovers up the memory of the place: the platforms recreate the old benches of Circus Maximus. Images: Image of the Proposal (left), Situation Plan (right, top), Image of the Proposal (right, bottom) and Sketch (below).
TRAVEL NOTEBOOK History of Portuguese architecture Multiple Buildings Study Drawings Professor: Alexandre Alves Costa Assistant: JosĂŠ Miguel Rodrigues The course of History of Portuguese Architecture aims the acquisition of knowledge of the architecture built in the territories of contemporary Portugal and their former areas in the world, the conditions of its production and design processes, since the last days of Pre-History, from Antiquity to end of the Old Regime. The Travel Notebook, with drawings and study works, completes the learning cycle. It is an exercise of thinking about the knowledge obtained and to deepen the ability to see, as medium of instruction look. Several representative buildings from different historical periods were studied. In: Discipline Program. Images: Porto Cathedral Cloister (left), Church of Grilos, Porto (right, top), Church of Santa Cruz, Coimbra (right, bottom) and Sketch of a Mosque (below).
DRAWING I/II Drawing Exercises Human Figure, Objects, Flowers, Fruits and Architecture Professors: Joaquim Vieira and Victor Silva Assistants: Isabel Carvalho and Armando Ferraz The Drawing Discipline promotes the representation and knowledge of the visible world and mental images through manual graphic registration. Develops the capacity of observation, the ability and the knowledge of the design act and the sensitivity to plastic and aesthetic values. Create conditions so that we can face the act of designing with agility and awareness. Promotes satisfaction and the knowledge of the necessity and pleasure of representation, the expression of number and extent and visual memory of the outer and inner reality. Recognition of an intention in the design of graphical expression. Understanding that we learn to draw drawing and drawing up. GRAPHIC REGISTRY Graphical Report Observation Drawings Places: Buildings and Places in the City of Rome Suports : Notebooks, Several Dimensions The period of study in Rome allowed me at various times to apprehend the city and its monuments through drawing. This was an essential tool for understanding the forms and spaces. Was a natural extension of the materials learned at the University. Confrontation by observing and recording took me to a better integration of experiences. In many instances, the drawing was a form of more intense enjoyment of spaces. I wandered by some of the most significant monuments and places of the city of Rome, recording them in my notebooks. In addition to the form and materiality, the design captures the atmosphere of the place and the way we see and feel every place.
