Palanca hotel
Porto, Portugal March 2014 Refurbishment Schematic Design
This project consisted on the modernization of a 24 year old hotel. There was a great need of providing a more comfortable space with a contemporary design. In terms of spacial reorganization, the main intervention was at the entrance level, where there were a few adjustments to minimize leftover areas and an intention to create a more open relashionship with the outside terrace. Regarding the room floors, the intervention focused mainly on introducing some changes in coatings and furniture. The study targeted also at resolving some technical issues, related to access of people with reduced mobility, air isolation and introduction of solar panels.

Quintela de Lampaรงas, Portugal July 2011 Refurbishment Schematic Design and Design Development
Presented with a building with typical construction characteristics from the rural area in which it is inserted, this intervention intended to preserve the exterior appearance and focus more on developing a rich interior. Without much space available, the first approach was to benefit from the level diference between the front and back facades to create a play of interior floor heights. The strategy for the interior design was to attach most of the equipment and storage to the perimeter wall, clearing the central space. This freed central space was then organized around a fireplace positioned in the middle.

Adiyaman living center
Adiyaman, Turkey December 2013 Competition - Shortlisted In collaboration with: ADAPT architects
This project consisted in a building destined to the integration of people with disabilities in society. The program was comprised by six main units and a few smaller areas - health unit, rehabilitation center, social education unit, employment training, guest house, administration and common and general facilities. Being destined to people with disabilities, the main goal and challenge of the proposal was to organize the complex program in a very clear and user-friendly way while valuing a low impact intervention that provided a rich relashionship with the green areas. The need for proximity with car access opposed to the need of a close relashionship with the green areas determined the position of each segmented fraction. This resulted in a compound of four very similar and sober buildings, with subtle differences between them and connected by very light bridges to allow interior access between all units.

L端leburgaz bus terminal
L端leburgaz, Turkey April 2013 Competition - Honorable Mention Awarded In collaboration with: ADAPT architects
Located in a small city along the road that connects Istanbul to Edirne, the plot for this project suggested the creation of a piece that stands out as an object and draws attention when passing through this important artery. Instead of creating different blocks for each individual requirement, the idea was instead to concentrate a rigid program structure and grid under an organic roof that gives it the iconic appearance intended. In plan, there is a clear programmatic division: outside, two sides of the building are used for arrivals (pedestrian and cars) and the other two for departures (buses and minibuses); inside, two axes connect the entrances on each side and set up the closed program (ticket sales, waiting area, cafeteria and service).

Stockholm kiosk
Stockholm, Sweden December 2012 Competition In collaboration with: Impromptu Arquitectos
This competition’s goal was to create a collection of 3 kiosks, each with different size, using a modular structure. The concept developed focused on creating a single piece - an extruded pentagon - with multiple functions. Each rotation of the pentagon was then assigned a specific funtion. A variety of combinations could then be assembled to form a kiosk with a distinct use. Furthermore, this kiosk could also have the ability to expand or reduce by adding or removing modules. Each pentagonal piece was equipped with a sliding door, an openable hatch, a built-in solar panel and the interior shape could provide sitting area or toilet, shelves and service desk or sink, in order to serve the most variable purposes. Other key-characteristics were its size - able to fit standard dimensions of road transportation - and its structure - fiberglass, a durable and low-maintenance material.

Casa da MĂşsica store
Porto, Portugal August 2012 Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documents Estimated construction date: 2014 In collaboration with: Impromptu Arquitectos
The project arises from the intention by Casa da MĂşsica to value an existing space within its block initially projected as a bus stop. The solution adopted was to enclose as much space as possible for a store while keeping the passage inviting to the plaza and maintaining formal coherence with the existing shop, on the other side of the block. The work with the heights and sections was the main challenge of the project, since the curved top slab tremendously conditions the interior. Some changes were made to the space provided: replacement of an existing back wall by pillars, in order to extend the store and include a technical area; placement of a skylight for best lighting of interior space; releveling the outside pavement to maintain consistency with the new interior; modification of the existing railing and lowering the wall that limits the parking access to highlight the aforementioned passage.

Dehli tourist spot
Dehli, India December 2012 Ideas Competition
The motto for the development of this proposal came from an image of disordered built mass as a result of successive juxtapositions of volumes and the notion of wandering circuit and controlled living space. A piece is implemented in the center of the square and adapts itself to the characteristics of the site. A set of volumes was developed, being influenced by existing masses, creating connections through dialogue with the direction of eyesight or pedestrian movement itself. The proposal is then a primarily closed mass to emphasize these relationships, always looking for a perimeter diffused lighting to highlight the influence of a central courtyard.

RESULT / OVERLAY
Esch-Sur-Alzette, Luxemburg December 2011 Ideas Competition In collaboration with: Tiago SĂĄ
The intervention in a recently built terminal with an uncomfortable distance between waiting area and bus stop, suggested the idea of overlaying both uses, resulting in a bridge-building solution. This bridge overlaps the existing infrastructure, connecting all the stops in a single protected corridor. The interior is left to appropriation by the students as much as possible. The highest volume works as a gesture to close the composition, allowing a direct relation with the existing green area. Materials were chosen in close relationship with the environment: corten steel was used aiming to absorb the industrial character of the area, whereas the coloured glass searched to maintain some continuity with the language of the new LycĂŠe Belval.

Matar贸 cultural center
Matar贸, Spain January 2010 5th year Academic Project, 1st semester Course teacher: Agust铆 Mateos
This project consists on the conversion of an old prison and its respective block interior into a cultural area. The main idea stands in the transfer of the panoptic idea - prison with a central observatory spot - to the center of the block, which is to say that only from there would it be possible to simultaneously see all the three entrances to the new complex. Two volumes are then created: one added to the prison which fractures the existing geometry, giving it a new look while maintaining its most iconic part intact; another that adapts to the irregular couryards of the existing houses and distances itself from the old Prison in a perspective of comtempation

In a transition point between an area marked by a large urban infrastructure and the beginning of a new centrality, the project proposes the max liberation of the ground level for the extension of a garden that stands next to the given site. The main volume, partially suspended, of simple and regular geometry and where the reading areas are located, aims to make the transition between these two city moments. The access is allowed through a small piece with more organic geometry that aims to relate with the green area. The remaining program remains “hidden” under the gardened platform, organized around two courtyards: a public one, around which there is a multi-purpose hall and a restaurant; a private one where administration is placed.

Quinta Amarela housing complex
Porto, Portugal July 2008 3rd year Academic Project Course teacher: LuĂs Viegas
This project represents the final stage of a work that extended itself throughout most of the year. It started as a small-scale urban intervention, which in the first instance focused on developing a housing/commerce/office proposal in place of Quinta Amarela, an old farm that occupied most of the block. It eventually resulted in the stabilization of two continuity volumes of closure attached to the existing buildings, and a third, an exception. This last phase was then focused on the developing with more detail of this “exception. The proposal, three towers with a common base, sought to make a transition from a mostly horizontal scale (predominant around the plot) to another, mainly characterized by taller and isolated volumes, which begin to emerge ahead in the same street.
