COLLECTIVE H ousing Porto, Portugal July 2008 Project III - 3rd year course teacher: Luís Viegas

This project represents the final stage of a work throughout the year. It started as a small-scale urban intervention, which in the first instance focused on developing a housing/commerce/office proposal in place of Quinta Amarela, an old farm that occupies most of the block. It eventually resulted in the stabilization of two continuity volumes of closure attached to the existing buildings, and a third, an exception. This last phase was then focused on the developing with more detail of this “exception”. The proposal, three towers with a common base, sought to make a transition from a mostly horizontal scale - the predominant around the site - to another characterized by taller and isolated volumes, which begin to emerge later in the same street.

PLATAFORMAS NIVELADAS EXTENSÃO JARDIM

In a transition point between an area marked by a large urban infrastructure and the beginning of a new centrality, the project proposes the max liberation of the low level for the extension of a garden that stands next to the given site. The main volume, partially suspended, of simple and regular geometry where the reading areas are located, aims to make the transition between these two city moments. The access is allowed through a small piece with more organic geometry in relation with the green area. The remaining program remains “hidden”, under the gardened platform.

This project consists on the conversion of an old prison and its respective block interior into a cultural area. The main idea stands in the transfer of the panoptic idea - prison with a central observatory spot - to the center of the block, which is to say that it will be only possible to simultaneously see all the three entrances to the new complex. Two volumes are then created: one added to the prison which fractures the existing geometry, giving it a new look while maintaining its most iconic part intact. Also regarding that aspect, the new building looks to distance itself in a contemplation perspective, at the same time as it stabilizes the existing courtyards.

14 |

Giving the historical character of the area, the first idea that came up was the absorption of a logic inherent to the surroundings to ensure a degree of cohesion in the site provided. Thereby, the concept of intervention was materialized an abstract interpretation of the typical nineteeth-century Porto lots and built environment - houses with narrow front and extensive depth with its own courtyard - with the lots being lagged from each other for the creation of spaces with different characters and visual frameworks and the roof being redesigned from hipped to gable roof. The material chosen was the pigmented concrete formwork of horizontal tension to balance the image of the project with the presence of the Fernandina Wall (one of Porto’s landmarks).

Facing a site located in the limit of an important park, the idea of integrating the building in its morphology came up. The transition between city and park will therefore have its conclusion in a piece that rises from the ground level and defines the fence of the street in a continuous gesture. The access to the building is done by two routes that continue the lines of the Stadtpark and implied, in volume, the division of the program into two parts that communicate under the platforms. The auditorium is therefore detached from the remainder of the areas and integrated in one of the green areas of the park.

Esch-Sur-Alzette, Luxemburg December 2011 Fonds Belval Competition in collaboration with: Tiago Sá

18 |

SITE / DISTANCE

The intervention in a recently built terminal with distance between waiting area and bus stop, suggested the idea of overlaying both uses, resulting a bridge-building solution. This bridge overlaps the existing infrastructure, conecting all the stops in a single protected corridor. The interior is left to appropriation by the students as much as possible. The highest volume works as a gesture to close the composition, allowing a direct relation with the existing green area. Materials were chosen in a relationship with the environment: corten steel was used aiming to absorb the industrial character of the area, whereas the coloured glass searched to maintain some continuity with the language of the new Lycée Belval.

Porto’s social housing in the saal process An interpretation of typological experimentalism from Projectual Operators

20 |

abstract The theme of this thesis stands between device and typology. The study of Projectual Operators in the structuring of the dwelling space is in this work applied to five projects that belong to the SAAL Process, due to their experimental character in terms of housing typologies and compositional aspects. The choice regarding these five projects - Antas, Bouça, Contumil, Leal and São Victor - held to exactly match these characteristics, also raising issues like the environment of consolidated city and addressee participation. The work is therefore based on a triple structuring. In a first part - regarding the 1st chapter - the methodology that will discipline and circumscribe the limit of the analysis is presented, whereas in the second part - 2nd and 3rd chapters - deal with the theoretical preparation of necessary knowledge for the arrival - in the third and last part, regarding the 4th chapter - at the analysis of the case studies. It was therefore important to unfold concepts and an historical approach that are always accompanied by an analysis of practical examples, in international and national levels, aiming typological and compositive issues. The aim of this study was to, ultimately, reflect about the conjugation of the two strands of knowledge for their application in the present day, aiming a better result in terms of designing of low-budget spaces, as well as the renewal of the case studies discussed, based on the devices used as the foundation of the work.

CASa dA MĂšSICAStore Porto, Portugal August 2012 Preliminary Study / Execution Project in collaboration with: Impromptu Arquitectos

26 |

The project arises from the intention by Casa da MĂşsica to profit from an existing space within the block which is currently open and has no use. The solution was to enclose as much space as possible for the store while keeping the passage inviting to the plaza and maintaining formal coherence with the existing shop, on the other side of the block. The work with the heights and sections was the main challenge of the project, since the top slab is curved and has a sharp fall in space that is already small. Some changes were made to the space provided: replacement of existing back wall by pillars, in order to extend the store and include a small technical area; placing a skylight for best lighting of interior space; releveling the outside pavement to maintain consistency with the new interior; cutting the existing railing and lowering the wall that limits the parking access to highlight the aforementioned passage.
