Chinese Classical Garden Design

Project Location: Nanjin, China Project type: park design, solo work Area: 3,000 m² Design Tools: hand drawing This is my second year of university design project, the design techniques are very immature, and design ideas are not enough comprehensive. However, this design is a reflection of my thinking and my original design for the understanding of traditional Chinese garden. All the works presented in this portfolio are done by me. The purpose of this project is to understand the history and design techniques of Chinese classical gardens. In the general layout, I should know how to draw sthe top view of different pavilions, how to combine all the elements together.

The Ideas

Public spaces are the primary sites of public culture. People can meet their “wild needs” at these places. Such “wild needs”, in our understanding, is not only and always “need wild nature”. It’s should also including social and urban aspects of view, as people no matter know each other or not can socialize or enjoy themselves “wildly” and freely. Thus, such public places could perform as both site and sight, meeting place and social staging ground.

The City

Luleå is located in the northern part of Sweden. It has subarctic climate with short, mild summers and long, cold and snowy winters. The population density (1,578 hab/Km2) of this city is 1/3 of Stockholm’s. However, it is Sweden’s 7th most populated city and the harbor of Luleå is 5th largest harbor. The life style of the city is people like outside activities, and people usually go out of the city to do them, as the city center doesn’t offer suitable places.

City for people, not for property: a design meets people's "Wild Needs"

The Site

Sรถdra Hamnen is an old harbor, situated in the central part of Luleรฅ, with walking distance to the heard of the city. It is as large as 1.8ha. Currently, the function of it is a parking lot with limited amount of vehicles, while a food company is occupied the single building on it. It can be seen as a large area with simple functions. However, the surroundings of Sรถdra Hamnen generally are residential areas, which is one of the most densified parts of the city. Thus, we consider the exisiting building could be removed.

Water Boundry: Summer and Winter

The Project

This project is about how public spaces could be created on the conditions of people using it toward the use value of urban space. As Södra Hamnen is a central located place, we are aiming to propose a public space can meet people’s “wild needs”. With the consideration of nature conditions, location and surroundings, we defined “wild needs” for this place as “communicate wildly”, “active wildly” and “relax wildly”. The skating boards’ area is proposed to meet the needs of “active wildly”, as we found that Luleå citizens love sports, while the city center doesn’t offer enough and suitable places. As Luleå has long and snowy winters, and people like winter sports, these boards can be used by skating in the summer and skiing in the winter. People, especially young persons from surround areas, could enjoy X-sports all year round at this place. The sand beach area is designed to meet the needs of “communicate wildly” and “relaxing wildly”. Although Luleå only has a short and warm summer, people still like to enjoy the sunshine during such season. Within such area, people can enjoy their “fika time” in suitable seasons, and have face-to-face interaction. While during the wintertime, the beach could be fulfilled by water, and be changed to a ice skating square. It could perform as a start or destination for people enjoying skating on the sea and wildly nature. At the same time, we kept and redesigned part of the old parking lot with a proper size, as part of parking area for surround residential areas.

If Without Green

Project Location: MalmÜ , Sweden Project type: Urban design, concept design, solo work Area: 19500 m² Design Tools: Auto CAD, Photoshop, Sketch UP, Illustrator, Indesign, hand drawing

IF WITHOUT GREEN

In my work, I mainly focus on the relationship between human being and nature, and make people aware of the importance of landscape in the urban area.

CONCEPT Concept of the design is basic on the idea of in-between. The two main roads and small paths are between the access points, the big points are water pounds, the small ones are trees or hydrophyte.

MASTER PLAN The wetland restoration in urban areas is, in effect, restoration of human habitat. Urban wetland restoration can restore the ecosystem to a condition that maximizes human benefits while minimizing inputs of energy.

Scene one shows the perspective of one part of the urban wetland, the people and children enjoy walking on the road of wooden trestle, as well as enjoy the peaceful and natural life. Scene two shows the perspective of the middle square in the urban wetland. It’s a kind of forestry square, and gather people together. The citizens use this square to have a rest, meet friends, or spend time with family.

Scene three shows the perspective of the higher paths in the urban wetland. When people are walking this path, they not only can see the whole view of park, but also can overlook the sea and the surrounding buildings. Scene four shows the perspective of the one of the small paths in the urban wetland. This path provides a quite and private environment, as well as more close to the pounds.

2060

2040

2010 With urban sprawl, in the next 50 years, Carlsgatan will become a new power area in Malmo city. If today is 2060, what happe in 2040, 2010? In most of the urbanization process, it's almost a rule to destruct the natural and the whole world. Urban greenery, however, follows the reverse path. Back 30, 50 years ago, it has less green spaces, less public activities. However, today, 2060, green roof, beautiful landscape between each buildings, public park, and urban wetland which is most important places.

Focus on the area of urban wetland, it changes a lot. Not only the geographical aspect, but also the whole enviroment, Compare with 2010, 2040 this two stages, the number of building increase so fast, but the green space is totally not enough. Between 2040-2060, the twenty years, the number of building still grow quilckly, in another hand, people think much of urban greenery, gradually increase the area of landscape, water, the number of plants. Follow this way, it will let people realize how important of urban greenery.

Qingjiang Design

Project Location: Nanjing, China Project type: Residential area design, solo work Area: 35,723.7 m² Design Tools: Auto CAD, Photoshop, Sketch UP

The General Information This project is residential area which located the city of Nanjing. My thought is that the entire residential area should be unified planning, comprehensive, and fully reflects the environment, business, leisure concept, as well as in this busy social life, the people can experience a peace a wild life.

Master Plan From the general layout of view, this area is divided into two parts: waterscape and leisure area. Walk from the main entrance into Qing Jiang Park, firstly, you can see an artificial pond fountain which can provide an opened feeling. When the residents come back to home, then can relax their mind and soul. About the leisure part, it's a comfortable and quite place for people to walk and have a rest after a meal. This place also becomes an outdoor public space which collect residents together.

Vegetation The planting of this garden can be divided into four groups. The northeast plantations plant Magnolia denudata, showing the spring flowers; the northwest green plants Acer palmatum, displaying the nice colorful leaves; the middle plants Syringa oblata, Armeniaca mume, Osmanthus fragrans, and Ginkgo biloba, presenting the natural beauty; the southwest plants Pinus parviflora, revealing serenity. The flowerpots decorate the terrace, and the bamboos in the plantation add hue to the east part, along the main road, there are many Lotus in the water.
