The idea behind this project is exploration between chaos and harmony using chaotic element, but arranging them in a way that you can see a pattern. It direct how the visitor navigate in the area.

Semester Objective

Point / Line / Plane This exercise explores the techtonic relationship of point, lines and plane. For of “Point / Line / Plane is ordered this way purposely. The point determines with the lines in Cartesian coordinate expressed in xyz, then using at least two points connects a line, and finally the line generates the plane. This project explores this concept. I wanted to explore the space without any fully enclosed wall or roof, just the Plane facing mostly north using point and line to generate this.

3

The view from facing South: The design explores discord and chaos. The shapes on the northern wall have many lines and points facing all over the place to express this. ** Depart

4

The view from facing West: Looking from this perspective the visitor can see more harmony within the space. Conceptually this is more of a sculpture just in the phase before it can be turned into an architectural environment.

5

The view from facing North: Looking this perspective, this express the idea of having the wall plane facing mostly north developed. If the conceptual stage were to move foward to more practical stage, the project can be realised by adding roof and wall plans to become a more enclosed space. 6

The view from facing North: Looking this perspective, the scaled human figure shows the size and how human interact with this space in 1:50 scale.

Reflection I was satisfied with this project and no further re-design was made. However, I did want to imagine what further real life project may reflect my project or look similar if it were to developed further. The architecture project I found was Slovenian Pavilion at expo milano 2015. It reflected the harmony aspect of my design and you can easily see the generation points and lines of the planes.

Mass My initial concept was to design a structure similar to a representing crystal or rock formation coming out of the ground. It is inspired by the building Royal Ontario Museum pictured on the right. However, after initial discussion it seemed I required the mass to be underground quite literally.

After my feedback of my first drawing, I realised I focused on the wrong thing. I relied upon the fact the building was transparent glass building as opposed to using “space to transfer light. Although I liked this drawing in term of a pure drawing exercise, I decided to do another one as my final design.

Final Reflection

Before my second design I have one things in my mind, which was to keep entire structure underground and focus on spatial qualities rather to technology. I decided to revisit my blog for inspiration and decided to use the Church of Light as my main inspiration. Its a underground concrete structure that uses narrow sky opening for first and second underground floor. The entrance is long to prevent too much light from getting in. This is because I wanted to have light to purely enter from the top and it is one solution I came up with.

Frame and Infill This exercise explores the relationship between the frame and the infill. Where the frame can often determine factor of what goes inside the infill. I wanted to design something similar to the sense house with geometric space inside and infill determined by the columns of the frame. I also wanted to design something that lift the floor plane above to provoke the concept of weightlessness which is opposite of the mass which is mentioned as a key point of frame during the lecture. The infill are the pillar like planes on the structural frame.

Herring Island Pavilion: a place to keep secret. This exercise I have attempted to use all three projects as starting point to create concepticles then from there further develop a final design. My concept for place to keep a secret is about discovering the pavilion, exploring the pavilion then arriving to a point where the visitor gets a different view of the island.

The chosen site is located near the centre of the island, the reason for using this location is enough open space and close to footpath with a rest shelter, so walking to this area feels like the natural destination. Another reason for choosing this island is due to surrounding natural scenery and the vegetation also act as a natural acoustic sound and wind barrier.

Concepticles With the fundamental idea of SOL in mind and the three previous projects. I have created a concepticle using the visual language of the first project, with supporting features of other two project such as the underground structure of mass. Frame and infill is on the separated structure at the entrance of the underground tunnel.

21

Concept developments With the concepticle and the SOL as starting inspiration. I decided to start sketching and after consultation with my tutor I realised my pavilion should be a tower like structure for the visitor the climb. I wanted a tunnel similar to my re-designed mass drawing and utilise the natural lighting like the SOL Grotto. The end of the tower also akin to a journey through a cave where there is light at the end of the tunnel and little light during the journey. After I draw some initial sketches, I’ve modelled the tunnel and the stair planes as looking up will be part of the climbing journey and the light comes down from the end of the floor.

Semester reflection As second architecture studio subject this semester had been very rewarding in term of design theory and principles. There are few things I’ve learned that was very important that I had no knowledge on by the end of first studio class, here is the list below:

1- The importance of spatial quality in architecture instead of just relying on other qualities such as technology and material.

2- The importance of designing for the site and not designing something then popping it on the site.

3- The fine line between sculpture and architecture in the context of pavilion (or even other type of architecture)
