Premise The built environment can and should contribute to a more equal, inclusive and cohesive society embraced by the places where we live, the facilities we inhabit, and the communities that we thrive in. This project addresses a broader scope of inclusion for how architecture must do more than just meet ADA accessibility requirements, but also become a democratic instrument that counteracts an inhospitable built environment of social, cultural, and economical inequalities. Program A residential training facility that creates a hub for developing the partnership skills and individual skills for easing these students and their guide dog companion into living independently. The program involves partnership with the Salvation Army housing campus along the site , working with Veterans and other individuals with disabilities.

ACCESSIBILITY

DISABILITY POPULATION: Blind & Visually Impaired

DISABILITY Legally blind abstraction Common misconception is that all blind people see is total darkness.

MISCONCEPTION Not everyone who is classified as legally blind sees total darkness. Some still have peripheral vision or even the ability to see everything, but altered with a blur. Those who cant see anything, are however commonly able to distinguish shadows or differentiate between light and dark. Blindness does not mean a complete lack of sight and total darkness for everyone, some still have limited functional vision.

The quality of buildings and spaces by default, have a strong influence on the quality of peoples lives. Creating these learning clusters and interactive spaces allow students to have resiliency in the classroom in the way they take on their education. By enhancing the day to day activities of its students through a sequence of indoor and outdoor play and learning spaces linked to a spinal main corridor along the center of the building. The design agenda became one of stitching together different programmatic clusters. While understanding the concept of clusters at a macro/micro scale. While each cluster accommodates the enlarged classrooms and shared collaborative spaces utilizing the windows of sight to link the spaces as well.

14 | Segregation By Design

03 Segregation by Design What Segregation by design means to me...? Segregation through planning and design has been and still is a systematic pattern that shapes the urban metropolis and location of housing due to racial lines. Throughout the years these effects assisted in keeping communities vulnerable, static and limited to not reaching their true potential. Instead, segregation throughout cities and suburbs continues to antagonize the imbalance of benefits between those of color and those of lower income. [3 member team/elective]

Robert C. Weaver once said “Segregated people in a nation that professes to be a democracy soon become frustrated people‌â€? This quote speaks volumes, to me, because it pin points a cause and its rippling effect. Design influences more issues than just the form and space. It includes additional realms of livability such as the built environment, community engagement, crime rates, cost of living, education, and employment. These widespread issues are closely related to the divide of the city, as a whole, racially, culturally, socially and economically.

Dutchtown is a neighborhood located in St. Louis, Missouri. It is bordered by Chippewa St. to the north, Broadway and Compton Ave. to the east, Walsh St. to the south, and the railroad tracks to the west. What was once a German neighborhood has transformed into a racially diverse area. The Germanic influence can be seen in the Bavarian style architecture dotting the neighborhood which contrasts with the typical St. Louis brick buildings. Dutchtown is the largest neighborhood in St. Louis with a population over 15,000 residents. of the neighborhood.

Stubborn to relocate, post disaster fisherfolk will often opt to build upon the rubble of their recently destroyed homes in slapstick manner rather than move to the isolated yet safer resettlement sites. This proximity to the sea and the makeshift nature of their informal settlements perpetuates the destructive cycle caused by natural disasters. Furthermore, the local government has implemented a 40-meter no build zone along the shoreline causing relocation among

The target user is a member of the community and their household relies heavily on fishing with no other means of livelihood. Dolor and her husband make their meager living from fishing at sea. Because of the isolated nature of her relocated home Dolor feels that 24 hours is not even enough time to support her household and hopes for a better livelihood. Filipe, the instructor, is a college graduate that studied agriculture. Already knowledgeable in the technologies of aquaponics, Filipe is willing to donate his time to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
