Industrialization has, for a long time, have created influential and profound transformations to the modern urban structure and facade of Hanoi that are still preserved to this day Before the French colonization, Vietnam had a long history of rice alcohol production. The beer industry was created in 1892 by Alfred Hommel, founder of Hommel Brewery in Hanoi. Over time, bia hoi became a staple of Vietnamese culture and it remains so to this day. However, with the time passingby, the old brewery is reducing its production beacuse of the relocation of new factory. Through renovation, we want to create another opportunity to refresh the monuments and symbols of a historical time, about its tangible and intangible values, consciousness and subconsciousness, either measurable on the outside or only perceptible on the inside. From there, each person draws dreams, even the most utopian, for these industrial spaces.
Before the French colonization, Vietnam had a long history of rice alcohol production. The beer industry in Hanoi was created in 1892 by Alfred Hommel, founder of Hommel Brewery in Hanoi. With the passage of time, some breweries have been relocated, and we have revitalized the brewery to make it a cultural icon again in Vietnamese .
CURRENT AXONOMETRIC SITE
BASED ON MODERNISM HERITAGES RESEARCH
The beer factory is composed of multiple buildings. Building types include beer breweries, office buildings, manufacturing plants, vegetable farms, warehouses, etc. The factory is surrounded by local Vietnamese residential areas. In summer, people who live nearby often drink around the brewery.
SURROUNDINGS & HISTORY OF BREWERY
Vietnam is located in a zone with hot and humid weather. Therefore, there is streetside beer culture in local . The local culture and architectural features provide references for my design.
BREWERY RENOVATION STRATEGY
BASED ON MODERNISM HERITAGES RESEARCH
1927-1975: Indochina Breweries and Ice Factories (Denis Frères) + Ets Larue + Hommel Brewery
1954: end of Indochina Breweries and Ice Factories - Tonkin Branch
From 1954: Hommel Brewery → Hanoi Brewery
On the basis of the original basic factory architectural style, local Vietnamese architectural forms are added. When designing the building shape, the connection between the tourist center and the surrounding factories was also taken into consideration.
SITE AXONOMETRIC
The site is surrounded by red brick buildings mainly for processing and offices. In order to unify the style of the site, buildings made of red bricks can be built between buildings. Giving red bricks a different form of construction makes the facade more abundant.

Determine the number of floors to build each building block.
The traffic and tourist flow are constructed around the volume.

THE AERIAL VIEW
Add a vertical traffic system to parallel streamlines. The pitched roof is constructed in traditional Vietnamese styles. Add red bricks in different arrangements to the facade.

Facade of bricks
After the red bricks are piled up as a whole, the simple and unified color can highlight the overall shape and design of the red bricks. Give people a stronger visual impact. Enrich the layering and visual experience of the red brick wall.
Red brick, this ancient and traditional building material is the main architectural element of the whole building I designed. The original beauty of red brick is also a building material familiar to Vietnamese locals. I hope to awaken the long-lost memory of the residents in the past and re-display the brewery culture of Vietnam in the last century. Meanwhile, it could bring new functions to the brewery.
THE MEMORY OF RED BRICK IN BREWERY
The two-story brick structure cushioned the building from surroundings. Through the red bricks, anyone staying in any corner of the architecture can sense the weather through shadows, and air that sunlight casts into the bricks.
THE REVIAL OF RED BRICKS BREWERY
The design is inspired by traditional Vietnamese architecture, with 3 separate spaces and sloping roofs while using a modern and powerful architectural language. At the same time, when designing one of the monoliths, the roof is divided into two parts and has a courtyard to maximize the efficiency of ventilation. Corridors connect to the roof. This creates courtyards and high walls. These porous walls bring a breeze to the interior of the building. The use of red bricks on the facade adds soul to the building. First of all, the uniform color of red bricks can further highlight the pure texture of red bricks and highlight the visual tension. Secondly, by changing the shape and composition of the red bricks, I created a sense of hierarchy and rhythm in the arrangement of the red b ricks and the composition of the entire shape. The most important thing is that red brick is an excellent material for pursuing the sense of historical vicissitudes and originality. The integration and coordination of red brick and modern new materials can better reflect the concept of transforming the beer factory.

Japanese architecture has developed over many years and many private wooden buildings have been preserved because of the culture, resulting in Japan now being like Hong Kong, where land resources are tight.
The use of modular architecture in recent years has given me the idea to create a mixed-use building complex by the sea.
This project uses discrete design to link the building modules together, integrating the original community, culture and natural environment to create a liveable residential community.

Due to the economic depression brought about by World War II, Japan has a large number of vacant houses. Unemployment and the economic crisis have made it impossible for people to buy traditional Japanese courtyards. New housing forms are needed. At the same time, the arrival of the Covid-19 era has increased the demand for home office. The house is no longer a single living place, but a new type

Create good lighting and ventilation conditions by taking advantage of the height difference of the hillside and the hierarchical arrangement of single parts.
The single room, studio, Office and the rest area are arranged and combined in a clever way, so that the building partitions with different functions can be used independently and also connected with each other.

MUSEUM OF SMELLS
How to preserve the smell of memory to build a museum

When people shuttle through the exhibition passages in these buildings, on the one hand, there is a corresponding connection between each floor, on the other hand, people can also tour in the same smell of four cities, and under the premise of keeping the museum facing the city and the sea, in order to ensure the purity of the smell of the exhibition area, the entire exhibition area is wrapped and separated from the other two volumes.
In this building, the original chaotic smells of the city covering and squeezing each other are re-planned and separated to guarantee the purity of people when they taste a certain smell.
In general, the building is divided into three different functional areas: the staff area, the tour area, and the leisure area for visitors (determined by the nature of the site)
In modern cities, there is little difference in the smell of food, but there is a huge difference in the arrangement of each city due to its special historical reasons or political and economic reasons. Therefore, when analyzing the smell of the entire city, according to different neighborhoods, summarize the different odor composition of each city
The scent boxes of the four cities are superimposed, and under the premise of ensuring that they do not overlap and interfere with each other, two upper and lower flow lines are created inside, respectively connecting the smell of food and traffic in the four spaces. And these two streamline lines are divided into a frame of 2500mm*2500mm to ensure that the spread of odor in this area working.

At the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, the area under the jurisdiction of Luqu belonged to Taozhou. It was crowned by mountains, stones and forests. It was sometimes called "Huanglong in the east" and "Shiling in the north". In the hearts of Tibetans, every mountain is protected by King Gesar. The villagers moved here from Zoige 500 years ago. As nomads, they waded in the mountains, set up tents, herded cattle and sheep, worked with the forest at sunrise and rested at sunset. Up to now, on the cliffs of the mountain, there are vivid Buddha statues and the six-character mantra of Padmasambhava, which are written by the old people in the village to pray for everyone who comes here. Taoyuan Wood and Stone pays tribute to Taozhou - the evolution of time and space in Luqu with its towering appearance. As one of the most important building materials in the 21st century, wood can realize automatic assembly and lower material cost in the construction stage. This wooden structure is designed based on discretization theory, referring to the splicing method of Lego toys, and exploring how to combine modular components and timber structures in physical construction. The mode of modular assembly can also realize the mode of unlimited expansion, implying the continuous generation of Taozhou. Living by the mountain, taking the mountain as a belief, the mountain is used as an image symbol to stand on the top of the mountain, and it will appear in front of everyone who is about to enter the Zecha Stone Forest.
