PROJECT 1 PHASE 1
SOUTH LIGHT Providence, R.I.
South Light is a group project centered around lighting a cemetary in a small South Providence neibourhood. It is a project that connects deeply with the community.
3
Lighting Design Our site was largely covered by canopies. Except street lamps, there were no other sources of light within the space, meaning no one wanted to go past it at night.
4
Existing light during the day
This lighting design considered cold light and warm light, lit up the "Boulevard" which currently have no lights.(by William Gant)

Paint: Blue painted stripes suggest the most popular route that pedestrains take. Pink painted stripes remind drivers that this is a pedestrain friendly neibourhood. Painted bump outs: More and safer space for pedestrains
Existing trees: Provide shades for brief resting
The Canopy: A frame to landmarks onsite and a congregation space such as farmers market
Mixed seeding prennials: Color matches the paints
13
We had several community meetings and presentations. But the opinions of those living in the neibourhood made it difficult to reach an agreement. In Phase 2, we are working with Southside Cultural Center in the Northwest part of our site in Phase 1, hoping for the site to be an energetic place for the public.

STONE AND TIME
Roosevelt Island, Washington D.C.
What is special about thesis studio is that the questions are came up and altered by ourselves throughout our studies. My toppic is stone but the specific question keeps changing because of the knowledge I gain.
Stone somehow represents the character of Washington D.C.

The proposal is a loop- shaped platform composed of talc and sandstone. It is at the intersection of swamp trail, upland trail and woods trail. The platform is surrounding the iconic stone pile which is formed by the Fall Line. The platform will gradually erode and create different circulations for visitors over the years.

CULTURAL CENTER Classroom at the phragamites When I first came to Tiexi, my eyes were filled with the color gray. Tiexi is a place of industry. I propose that a cultural center will light up the greyness of Tiexi and emphasize industry itself as a kind of culture. My project is to renovate an old factory building. I chose to preserve the old red brick walls but paint them white. The paint can rejuvinate the walls as well as protect them. The second floor will be a dynamic wooden cap with windows. The facades of an architecture should be used as active spaces too.The landscape provides visitors with multiple activities. The landscape furniture acts as devices for exhibition and provides seating. Course: Design Principles Undergraduate work Instructor: Sun Dong Shenyang, LN, China

TWISTS AND TURNS This project centers around an underutillized site in East Providence called Bold Point Park. It is next to a factory and can only be entered via one path. Neighbouring Providence River, activities like sailing and kayaking are important to the park. There is a sailing club just across the river. My design is to create a natrual topography that follows the physical circumstances of rock erosion along rivers especailly meandering rivers like the Mississipi. Topography made it possible for various programs on site. Also, with rising tides, the shape of the site is constantly changing. For water sports, people can kayak or canoe between the lands and experience the wide and the narrow chanels. Course: Constructed Ground 2015 Winter RISD Instructor: Adrian Flores Providence,R.I.

THRESHOLD Classroom at the phragmites
The Tillinghast Farm is a natural wetland, beach, lawn, forest, and home to phragamites. We visited the site and studied the condition of the soil and later made models and drawings of the Farm. In the design process, we were asked to define a threshold on site and map the wind, light, and shadow at our designated threshold. We were then asked to design a classroom at the threshold along with an point of entrance and a method of arrival.
57
Soil study To better understand soil conditions we went to the Tillinghast farm and started digging into the ground using shovels and excavators. After that we drew soil profiles, drew sections and made models to get a sense of soil under our feet is a part of our design that we should not forget.

Sustainability in design is an evolving aspect of the design profession. This course has been designed to introduce the participant to three general categories of sustainable design: 1) Stormwater Management (Rain Gardens, Bioswales, Rainwater Harvesting), 2) Permeable Pavement and 3) “Green Roof / Rooftop Gardens. The site is at the corner of student center and campus drive. A rain garden is collecting water from the roof runoff. The roof garden is a place for people to rest and have a look at the rain garden that they do not have access to.

ROI SHOW
ROI (Return on Investment) explores and critiques what it means to learn, practice, and perform art and design in the corporate capital. How do we engage with, participate in, and contribute to a market that commodifies creativity? Where do we stand in the economic cycle of the creative capital? This was the opening gallery show for the RISD Graphic Design Department's new gallery space. The show was made possible in collaboration with Cyril Duval (item idem), the students from the ‘Design & the Gallery’ course, and under the guidance of Jiminie Ha.
