hy-pPARK

Location: Providence, Rhode Island Programme: hybrid park/ botanical garden Brief: The fall semester studio name was “Underworld and it had the aim to connect the visible with the unseen, the present with the memory. The Braod Street Synagogue was the given building, an abandoned synagogue but a landmark for the Jewish community in Providence. The idea that drove my project after analyzing both the neighborhood and the building, was to create a green space for the community. By creating a park that incorporates plants from the countries where people in the area come from, the abandoned building would become a new landmark and connection hub. Through creating ADA ramps that would connect the city to the sky, and that would lead you to different spaces (e.g cafe, seeds shop, library), the project would bring a new and exciting feature to the area. The basement is an unusual space because it create the concept of underground and above ground in the same space but reversed. Through huge glass pots, the basement visitor would see the roots of the trees and plants above, but would also be surrounded by plants aswell.

post-humanFACTORS

This project is part of the Post-human Factors and Ergonomics class. The seminar examines the changing definitions of human and the manifestation of human-technological conditions through spatial and artifactual production. The assignment was to create an artifact that is an extension of the body. This was a group project. The software used was Rhino with Grasshopper. Left: final project- a mask for focusing vision Down: iterations of the concept

Programme: housing Brief:

During my internship, I was given a client to work with for an adaptive reuse project. The property is a fairly large farmhouse that is unused at the moment. As the owners want to start renting the building, I decided to transform it into 12 apartments of different sizes; the larges 3 being the top penthouses. The sizes range from 50 to 200 sq meters, with subterranean parking and storage. The concept is based on the idea of commonalty and individualism. The people renting will share some facilities, but will also benefit of individual gardens and terraces. The exterior additions help to maximize the sun and also the privacy. The roof was raised in order to allow more floor space. Due to the current laws of the village, the house can not accommodate more than 3 apartments, but the new design approach, will be presented to the local council to be approved.

anarchistCLUB

Location: Providence, Rhode Island Programme: anarchist social club inner garden

bathrooms

Brief: The anarchist club is a Spring studio project. The assignment was to create a social club inside 60 Ship Street, Providence, an old brick building. The studio was inspired by Pierre Chareau’s works, and was divided in 10 weeks, each week focusing one a design aspect e.g. parti, materials, furniture, lighting etc. Put together, all those weeks are supposed to form a complete project.

emergency exit

The idea behind the anarchist club, was to create a space that is interactive, that creates countless possibilities. The perfect society in the anarchist dogma, is a society with no written rules, that bases itself of self-respect; force is being implemented only if those unwritten rules were trespassed. Therefore, I wanted to create a space that changes all the time, that the users need to think before creating something, because their action will influence directly or indirectly someone else. Through creating 8x8 feet spaces that can be enlarged, I seek to create this feeling. There are vertical sliding walls (that act as doors), furniture on floor tracks and cabinetry and lighting on ceiling tracks. The user can create its own space, the smallest 8x8 up to the entire floor; can mix 4 different styles of furniture and create its own desired pattern for cabinetry. *for animation visit website

Location: Providence, Rhode Island Programme: Arts studio Brief: The desire to create a new studio experience came from the need for both a different studio environment and a connection between different forms of art. Having a closer look at these studios, there is a great need for change of accessibility, materiality, lighting, and flow. My project is trying to emphasize the changes within the design. Whether one wants to dance, practice music, sculpt, paint or anything else, ONEstudio is the ideal place to be able to do one or any of these activities. A painter could be influenced by someone dancing, a musician could try to pick on the rhythm of that dancer and a sculptor could also be influenced by both the music and the dancing. This studio will be a place for concept development, inspiration and refining of ideas. The concept for this space came from the idea of stages and the European motto “unity in diversity”. In my opinion, each art has a form or another of a physical artistic stage, thus the stage concept. The whole space of ONEstudio has small stages but the overall space becomes one big stage, where everyone is perceived as an actor and everything looks like a collaborative part of the performance. There will be no assigned space for a certain activity, therefore there will be freedom of choice and position.

extensionHOUSE

Location: New Port, Rhode Island Programme: House museum extension Brief: As part of the summer school ar RISD, we had to form teams of 6 and come up with an idea for a house museum in New Port. Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House, which belongs to the New Port Historic Society, is the oldest house in the city. As part of the the society’s plan to make the house a hotspot in the city, RISD students were asked to come with a solution. The team that worked on this project, decided to leave the house intact as much as possible. Therefore there is only one point of accest between the old structure and the new one.

Our solution was to create a tunnel that would connect 2 streets, therefore there would be an increase in the interaction between the public and the house. The path would be open 24/7 as a connection, and it would contain a cafe area where tickets can be bought. From this corridor there are 3 routes possible, the elevator straigth inside the house, the route towards the garden, and from there on the top of the tunnel, or the route to the basement, where we have decided to include an art gallery and an auditorium for different local or regional events. schnurCHAIR

“chairs speak louder than couches”

Type: group project Location: RISD studio Programme: reuse of an old chair part Brief: The Schnur chair is the result of a structure class project. Being part of a 4 member team, and being given a part of an old chair, we were asked to create a sculpture that can be used as a chair. The chair was born out of the desire to create a minimalistic, modern product but keep a little of the chair’s vintage touch. Furthermore, when working on the design, we took into consideration the weight ( which we wanted to keep as low as possible) and also the east of manufacturing. What people found successful, was the simplicity and hand craft.

reviveCHURCH & RESTARANT

Location: St Martin’s Church, Birmingham UK Programme: adaptive reuse Brief: As part of my final Undergraduate project, I had to find a problem and come up with a solution. After closely analyzing the problems today’s society faces, I chose the following three: increase of technology use, unnecessary food waste and decline of Christianity in the UK

Solution The proposed solution is adapting a church building to a restaurant space, but still keeping the church on Sundays. The restaurant is going to use edible food that is not wanted by supermarkets. The proposal is that of a ‘’building inside a building’’. Two entities governed separately but under the same roof, both with the aim of preserving the historic building. This results in keeping the church, respecting the church community and history of the building. Due to the high ceiling, it was decided to use the void space for the developing on vertical of the project.

Location: Rome, Italy Programme: snack bar design Brief:

libertyTREE

“Liberty Tree” is a snack bar inspired by the theme of nature and its relationship with human beings. Nature is not only the place that humans get all the resources from, but also the thing that connects them to divinity. Building a tree is an attempt to representing the connection between earth (ground) and heaven (ceiling). In the past, the tree was seen as “axis mundis” the connection between man and divinity. The whole design of my bar is the story of all human beings: born with nothing. careless about the material side of life until late in life, then suddenly taken in this fabricated world with all its limitations and laws. Being inspired by natural shapes, the tables have amorphous forms very common in nature and the ceiling is inspired by the shapes of leaves and the positions that they have on a branch.

Location: RISD Museum, Providence Programme: wood installation

During the Summer RISD programm, the studio class had to put up an wood installation using only 2’, 4’ and 8’ two-by-four lumber. Due to its success, the RISD Museum asked the studio class to re-install it in the Museum’s lobby for a private event.

Location: no fixed location Programme: Art Nouveau pavilion Brief: The first longer project of the Undergraduate degree was to create a pavillion in the style of Art Nouveau or Bauhaus. The style chose was Art Nouveau. The design resamples the roots of a tree and is similar to the curved shapes prefered by the Art Nouveau artists.

r.o.o.tPAVILION

The pavilion can be put up in 2 different ways, either in a circular mode, giving a more intimate atmosphere, or in an “S shape mode, having the ossibility to extand it, thus creating a path. It can be used as an exhibition installation.

Location: BCU workshops Programme: nurture room design Brief:

The room focuses on the senses and how you can connect to the environment through them. The whole room becomes a game, which is not only for fun but also for learning. The idea of having tunnels came from the fact that an angry child need some time alone, usually children go and hide under their blanket at home. The outside of the tunnels can be used as seating. The idea behind the design is to help children with behaviour problems to be comforted and feel loved, and in the same time explore the world around them. Trying to open their eyes inside, will make them want to explore. The whole space is a journey, a representation of the inner and outer self. Games, one-to-one talks, counselling and other activities can be done inside, so it is a multifunctional room.

iSENSE

The project is a quick project that was designed for a PRU (pupil referral unit)school in the West Midlands county, UK. It took birth as the need of a friend for a nurture room in which the children that need time to calm down in case of a breakdown during classes.

Location: BCU workshops Programme: adaptive reuse of object Brief:

collanderLAMP

The last project of first year of Undergraduate degree, was to create a product, repurposing another object that we bought from a thrift store (secondhand store). My design was based on a collander and it was mean to be elegant and simplistic, therefore I went for a wall light. The collander is mounted on a rounded MDF board.

The first interior design project was Novus Anticus hotel, that took place during the second year of the Undergradute degree. The hotel is inspired by the ancient world because a nation without history is like a tree without roots. The interior is inspired by several known or less known historical designs, practices or beliefs.(e.g ‘mesa verde’ national park, panteism) Coventry is a mixture of architecture styles, from the ruins of the Cathedral to the newly build buildings. Thus, the exterior’s design is trying to represent this through the glass and metal facade and colored glass back.
