FOREWORD An exclusive in Amsterdam: the ‘Insight Tibet’ exhibition, presenting photos of Tibet by Tibetan artists. The development in Tibetan art and photography has accelerated in recent years, reflecting in this exhibition. An exciting moment in Tibetan art history, now on show at the Melkweg Gallery. INTRODUCTION The western image of Tibet is sometimes unbalanced and stereotypical. It usually either shows the severe influence of the Chinese local and national governments or it portrays an image of a mythical and mystical Tibet with ancient traditions playing a central part. A much less known fact is that Tibet has grown into a complex modern society. These days Lhasa is a capital with characteristics of a small Chinese city: broad streets and concrete buildings covered with billboards. At the heart of Lhasa lies the old city centre with its beautiful temple roofs glowing in the sunlight. Lhasa is thus not only a destination for pilgrims from all over the world but also a city of garrisons and merchants. Despite severe limitations, even a blooming art scene has arisen: the radical social changes in Tibetan society its breeding ground – in the narrow margin between communistic developments, Buddhism and the Internet culture. In the old city centre of Lhasa a few young artists started a gallery bearing the name of Tibet’s first modern artist and scientist: Gendün Chöpel, icon of the secular Tibetan free spirit. This exhibition and the accompanying catalogue show pictures of the Gendün Chöpel gallery artists as well as photos taken by their friend Jangbu, a well-known poet, filmmaker and photographer from Amdo. Being able to help with the organisation of this important photo-exhibition is very special to me. My connections with the individual artists from Lhasa began in the 1990s when I was still living in Tibet. Over the past decades I was able to experience their development from close by and when I met the artists in Lhasa we held long conversations exchanging ideas. Since 2006 I have had the opportunity to collaborate with Elke Hessel in organising exhibitions for these artists in several European galleries and museums, where I could also show some of my own work. The Lhasa photo-project arose from this background. It shows Tibet through Tibetan eyes – at first glance perhaps astonishingly familiar. But these pictures also give us a very personal insight into daily Tibetan life, as it takes place between global instant culture, tradition, repression and the search for a contemporary authentic Tibetan identity.

CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY IN LHASA Photography as an art form only recently came into existence in Tibet. Up until now contemporary Tibetan artists only used photography as a tool for photorealistic paintings or for documentation. In the past decade modern Tibetan art has taken a quantum leap through the many contacts with Chinese and western artists and all the information that became available through the Internet. Several artists also studied abroad. These developments led to a larger self-consciousness and an own vision on art. During my stay in Lhasa in 2008 I spoke extensively with fellow artists about their approach to art. They see their approach as the foundation for the images that subsequently materialise. At that moment the idea emerged to let Tibetan artists photograph their own daily life in which this approach is reflected. A first series of pictures was presented in 2009 at the well-received Frankfurt exhibition ‘Ein Blick in das eigene Gesicht’. Back in Lhasa in 2010 we discussed organising a second exhibition, this time with the emphasis on the artistic side and not on the documentary side of photography. The exhibition ‘Insight Tibet’ expresses in this way a new Tibetan attitude, to create pictures as an outer projection of personal insights. Photography is an excellent way to capture transient thoughts. The pictures in this exhibition provide a subtle view of the Tibetan world, moving away from the usual clichés and western perspectives.

Tashi is a founding member of the Gedun Choephel Artists’ Guild. In 1984 he graduated
from the Fine Arts Department of the Central University for National Minorities in Beijing. He also completed a Master’s degree in Art from the National College of Art and Design in Norway and is currently Associate Professor at the Arts Department of Tibet University. His works have been exhibited in international museums and galleries, and he has published papers pertaining to Tibetan art education and painting. 8 Zhangpin, Chinese, born 1977 in Hunan Zhangpin worked as an artist in Beijing from 1997 – 2001.
