It’s Holiday Time! The traditional Czech Christmas of carp, potato salad and molten lead is fast approaching. This means shorter days, colder weather and heavier coats, but happily, also Christmas markets, Turbomošt® and roast chestnuts. December is also jammed full of interesting cultural and social events, and not just the ever-embarrassing office party. The Christmas markets open the last Sunday in November and will remain open this year until the 23rd of December. In the three main downtown squares, Svobody, Zelní and Dominikanské, you will find handcrafted gifts, drinks and seasonal gourmet delights galore! Musically, in a non-christmassy vibe, there are two ground-breaking British acts worthy of note this December: Surgeon at Fléda (10 th) and Henge at Kabinet Múz (also,10 th). Surgeon is the pseudonym of Anthony Child, a British musician and producer who has been at the forefront of experimental techno

since 1994. His music is more cinematic and industrial than most techno artists and he boasts influences like Coil, Can and Faust - instead of the usual Detroit house acts of the 1980s. Henge, in contrast, follow in the footsteps of great British psychedelic bands like Ozric Tentacles and Gong, with a clear influence of drum n bass and electronica - a mind-altering time is guaranteed for all. In the arts, it’s great to see the re-opening of the Uměleckoprůmyslové Muzeum (Museum of Applied Arts) on Husova after a full refurbishment. As well as a new look and new workshops,

there is also the stunning new exhibition, Lightness, by Lucie Koldová, which comes highly recommended. Another exhibition recently launched is Oči Brna, the story of Leopold Šrom, at the Moravian Library on Kounicova (all month). Leopold Šrom was one of many Moravian pilots that joined the Royal Air Force in World War Two. His story is typical of many Czech airmen who ran off to join the RAF, but then found life uncommonly difficult during the communist era. The exhibition, also available online (https://raf.knihovny.cz) includes photographs, films, interviews and other documentary evidence and is well worth a visit. Have a Joyous Christmas and a Fantastic New Year from all at Kam v Brně / Where in Brno - See you next year!
