TIDBITS® INDULGES IN SOME by Kathy Wolfe October is National Pizza Month! If you’ve eaten pizza in the past month, you’re part of the 93% of Americans who have done that same thing. In fact, across the nation, about 350 slices are consumed every second, equivalent to about 100 acres of pizza each day. If you’re an average citizen, you’ll eat about 46 slices, equal to 23 lbs. every year. Pizza sales generate about $30 billion annually. • It should be no surprise that pepperoni is the nation’s favorite topping, featured on about 36% of all pizzas ordered. That adds up to approximately 251,770,000 lbs. of this meat every year. Our least favorite topping is anchovies. About 61% of the population likes thin crust best and 14% prefer thick crust. The remainder like very thin crust the best. • There are more than 61,000 pizzerias in the United States. Over 9,000 of those are in New York. About 17% of the restaurants in America are pizzerias. • Pizza evolved in Italy hundreds of years ago as a way to use up leftovers. With no refrigeration or way to preserve perishables, women would roll out dough and put remnants of meals along with fresh produce on the dough to bake. turn the page for more!

• Tomato sauce base didn’t come about until the late 1600s. Until that time Europeans were suspicious of tomatoes, believing them to be poisonous. Once they overcame that fear, tomatoes became the base for pizzas. • Antica Pizzeria is the first known pizzeria, which opened in Naples, Italy in 1738. In 1830, the Port’Alba restaurant opened in Naples, baking their pies in an oven lined with lava from nearby volcano Mount Vesuvius. America’s first pizzeria was opened by Gennaro Lombardi in 1897 in New York City, and is still in operation just down the street from its original location. • To the Italians, there are two main types of pizza, the Marinara and the Margherita. Marinara pizza is topped with tomato, oregano, garlic, and olive oil, while the Margherita has a topping of tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and fresh basil. • Super Bowl Sunday is the highest pizza sales day of the year. Domino’s Pizza alone sells more than 110 million pizza slices on that day, about 80% more than a normal Sunday. Super Bowl Sunday is followed by New Year’s Eve, Halloween, Thanksgiving Eve, and New Year’s Day. But even with all the pizzas sold on those days, pizza still takes second place in the takeout department for the over-50 crowd, edged out by chicken. • In 1958, two brothers from Kansas borrowed $600 from their mother to start up a pizza restaurant in a 600-squarefoot building in Kansas. Frank and Dan Carney opened up the first Pizza Hut near Wichita State University, and just one year later, had their first franchise restaurant in neighboring Topeka. Within 10 years, there were 300 Pizza Huts across the nation. Today there are approximately 12,000 Huts in over 90 countries around the world. In America, this chain is the largest user of cheese, purchasing more than 3% of the country’s supply, an amount that requires 170,000 dairy cows to produce.

Tools 4 life By DR. Jim coyle

The Empty Chair

A daughter asked a pastor to pray with her dad. When he arrived, he found Joe lying in bed, head propped up on two pillows, and an empty chair beside his bed. “I guess you were expecting me,” he said. “No, who are you?” “Your daughter called me and when I saw the empty chair, I figured you were expecting me.” “The empty chair”, said the dad. “I’ve never told anyone this, not even my daughter. All of my life I have never known how to pray. I used to hear about prayer, but it always went right over my head. Four years ago my best friend said to me, “Joe, prayer is a simple matter of having a conversation with Jesus. Here’s what I suggest. Sit down on a chair, place an empty chair in front of you, and in faith see Jesus on the chair. It’s not spooky because he promised, “I’ll be with you always.” Then just speak to Him and listen in the same way you’re doing with me right now.” “So, I tried it and liked it so much that I do it a couple of hours every day. I’m careful, though. If my daughter saw me talking to an empty chair, she’d either have a nervous breakdown or send me off to the funny farm.” Deeply moved, the pastor prayed and left. Two nights later the daughter called the pastor with the news of her dad’s passing. “When I left the house, he called me over to his bedside, told me one of his corny jokes, and kissed me on the cheek. When I got back from the store an hour later, I found him dead. But there was something strange, In fact, beyond strange--kind of weird. Apparently, just before Daddy died, he leaned over and rested his head on a chair beside the bed.”

• Available pizza toppings in North America vary according to geographical area, and in some parts of the country, regional favorites are Cajun shrimp, oysters, crayfish, tuna, venison, duck, eggplant, and artichoke hearts. The majority of the population still favors meat toppings (62%), while the remaining 38% prefer vegetarian ingredients. International toppings include Japan’s favorite squid, eel, bacon, and potato pizza. In India, folks prefer pickled ginger, mutton, and tofu, while a fish pizza is the Russian’s choice, a combination of sardines, tuna, mackerel, herring, and salmon. In the Netherlands, if you order up a Double Dutch, you’ll receive double cheese, double onions, and double beef. • Canada has its own unique taste in pizza. The Poutine has toppings of cheese curds, French fries, gravy, and shaved beef. Also gaining popularity there is the hot dog stuffed crust pizza, which features an Angus beef hot dog cooked inside the stuffed crust. • Mozzarella cheese originated in Italy, produced from the milk of water buffaloes. Traditional mozzarella comes from those buffalo in a very few countries, including Bulgaria and Italy. Because it is not aged like most cheeses, traditional mozzarella is eaten fresh within a few hours after it is produced. Most mozzarella is made from pasteurized cow’s milk due to the rarity of the water buffaloes. • What about pizza’s caloric content? A pepperoni personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut is about 625 calories, while one slice of that company’s Supreme pan pizza is 440 calories.

FAMOUS CANADIANS:

JONI MITCHELL

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, she was one of the leading folk performers, racking up Grammy after Grammy. Let’s examine the facts on the talented Canadian native, Joni Mitchell. • We know her as Joni Mitchell, but she was born Roberta Joan Anderson. Her father, a Royal Canadian Air Force flight lieutenant, was stationed in Fort Macleod, Alberta, during World War II, instructing pilots, and it was here that Roberta was born in 1943. • As a child, Joni developed an interest in classical piano when several of her friends were taking music lessons, and she developed a love for Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Beethoven, and Debussy. She herself began piano lessons at age 6. But when she was 8, calamity struck in the form of polio. It was 1951, before Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine was in use, and an epidemic swept through the area. Joni was bedridden for weeks, and during her confinement, she became interested in singing, frequently practicing on her fellow patients. • Physical weakness following her recovery forced Joni to leave behind any athletic interests she may have had, causing her to fully pursue the arts. Singing, poetry, and painting became her loves. As a teen, she began singing in small nightclubs in western Canada, as well as adding songwriting to her list of accomplishments. Her playing and songwriting took on a different sound due to a weakness in her left hand as a result of the polio. This made it impossible for her to play certain chords, so she created a different sound with alternative chords she could manage, chords that Mitchell herself calls “Joni’s weird chords.” • Joni played gigs in local coffeehouses in Calgary, saving up money to fund her real desire – art school. She enrolled in Calgary’s Alberta College of Art and Design to pursue painting, but dropped out after a year. It was in a Toronto folk club that she met a Michigan folk singer, Chuck Mitchell. Within a week, the pair were married, followed by an immediate move to the United States, where they began playing music together. • The marriage didn’t last but her music did, and in 1968, when she was 25, Joni Mitchell recorded her debut album, produced by David Crosby. It was followed closely by her second album “Clouds,” which featured her famous composition “Both Sides Now” and earned Mitchell her first Grammy. She wrote and recorded “Big Yellow Taxi” in 1970, with its well-known line, “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.” One of the biggest hits for the group Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, “Woodstock,” was composed by Mitchell. • She began her move from folk songs to jazz and blues in 1974 with the album “Court and Sparks,” which is now her most successful album. Rolling Stone magazine ranks it as #111 on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. • Joni Mitchell has received eight Grammy Awards, most recently in 2008. In 2002, she was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, which described her as “one of the most important female recording artists of the rock era.” She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, and into the Canadian songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007. • Today, Mitchell is retired with numerous health problems. She began smoking at age 9, and it has been her lifelong habit.

December 22– January 19

Will you or won’t you, Capricorn? That will be the question this week, and keeping others in suspense is not a bad thing. You don’t want to reveal your cards too soon.

January 20– February 18

Of course, you can, Aquarius. You have the goods to get the job done. Forget about what others are saying and move forward. A plan at home is hatched.

February 19– March 20

Promises, promises, Pisces. You’ve made many, and you must hold to them all. A tickle of the ivories gets a party off to a great start. Join the fun.

March 21– April 19

Crass you are not, but crass you will become if someone does not stop harassing you. It may be the only way, Aries. An exception is made at work.

April 20– May 20

You’re on top of your game this week, Taurus. There is nothing you cannot accomplish. Enjoy the limelight. An extension is granted. Get busy.

May 21– June 21 Better late than never, Gemini. Time to tackle that nagging issue. A plan is developed at the office. Gather your team and get ready to work.

June 22– July 22

Actions matter, Cancer. Put your money where your mouth is. A childhood pal makes an announcement. Be there to offer your congratulations.

July 23– August 22 Listlessness sets in, and it’s up to you to find a way out of it, Leo. Be brave. Be bold. A money matter is resolved once and for all with the help of an advisor.

August 23– September 22 Some dreams were meant to be chased, so go for it, Virgo. A youngster interrupts your train of thought. Listen carefully. They may have the answer you seek.

September 23– October 22

Good things come to those who wait. Be patient, Libra. This is not the time to push. The deadlock at work is finally broken and progress is made.

October 23– November 21

Planner you are not, Scorpio, but planner you must become when someone close to you bows out. Look to a trusted senior to help out.

November 22– December 21

The torch is passed, and it is up to you to find the most efficient solution, Sagittarius. Start with the ideas of an old friend. The plot thickens at home.

Senior News Line by Matilda Charles

Do You Live Alone? Nearly 30 percent of seniors live alone. Home safety is very important to us, and even more important during the short, dark days of winter. Here are a few hints to stay safe. ● Invest in a few of those small “tap” lights -- the kind you touch on top to turn on -- and put them along your path to various rooms, especially if you have to cross a room in the dark before reaching a lamp. ● Turn on a light when you reach for your weekly pill container to be sure you don’t grab the wrong day’s pills. ● Use a ladder and stepstool only if someone else is around. Keep things you need on lower shelves. ● Guard against slipping. Beware of scatter rugs that slide easily on hard floors. If your shoes are worn enough that they’re slick on wood or vinyl flooring, it’s time to replace them. ● Keep your door locked when you’re home alone, even if you live in a safe neighborhood. ● If you’re on social media, be careful what you reveal online. Never say that you live alone. ● Be aware in the kitchen. Be sure the stove and other appliances are off when you’re finished with them. Mop up spills. Have a fire extinguisher and know how to use it. ● One of the best ways to stay safe is to stay in touch with others. If it’s available, sign up for daily caller service, likely through your senior center. Or make a deal with a neighbor that you’ll check in with each other every morning by phone. Sign up for Meals on Wheels or attend meals at a local senior center. For more hints, go online and search for “seniors living alone safety.”

● Confectioner Milton Hershey suffered through founding two candy companies that ended in failure, then succeeded on his third attempt, and finally sold that company and used the proceeds to found the Hershey Company. After all his hard work, though, he seemed to be less interested in enjoying the fruits of his labors than in helping others. In 1909 he established the Hershey Industrial School for Orphaned Boys, and 10 years later he donated control of the company to a trust for the school. Today the institution is called the Milton Hershey School, and it continues to have a controlling interest in the candy company. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Wood Floors and Water Don’t Mix

Q: While I was away on a business trip, my roommate decided to buy a couple of floor plants and put the containers directly onto the hardwood floor with nothing under them. By the time I got back, a couple of waterings later, water had run out of the pots and across the floor. Now there are two big water rings where the base of each vase was, and water stains along the path that the leaking water flowed. Can these be fixed, or does my roommate need to pay for repairs? -- Vivian in Cambridge, Mass. A: If the standing water around the vases hasn’t buckled the wood, you should be able to deal with the stains without too much effort. Make sure the entire floor is dry, particularly where the vases stood. You may want to borrow a dehumidifier from a friend for a few days to encourage the drying process. In some cases where water damage is minor, the water marks may disappear or diminish dramatically once the wood has dried completely. If once the wood has dried, a white water stain is still evident, then water likely stained the floor’s finish. This is easier to deal with. Heat up a clothes iron (use a “no steam” setting and empty out all the water from the holding tank). Place a dry, lint-free white cloth over the stained area. Rub the iron over the cloth for two or three seconds, then lift the cloth away to check the spot. Another method for white stains is to drench a super-fine steel wool pad with lemon oil, then gently rub the white marks with the pad to buff out the stain without scratching the finish. However, if the stains are dark, then water likely penetrated through the finish and into the hardwood itself. This is more complex, particularly if your floor was installed in the past few years. Older hardwood floors seem to handle water staining and refinishing better. Newer floors not only don’t handle water so well, but also have to be cleaned or repaired more carefully. Contact a flooring professional if you’re not sure. To get to this type of stain you will need to sand away the finish -- being careful not to sand the wood itself -- and then try to lighten the stain. The most common recommendation is to carefully apply a 50-50 solution of water and bleach, or a professional wood bleach, directly to the stain using an old toothbrush. Use only a small amount (you may want to test it on one of the less-conspicuous stains), blot up any excess and let dry. Repeat until the color matches the rest of the wood again, then let it dry for a couple of days before gently sanding, applying wood stain (if necessary) to finish matching the surrounding floor, and refinishing the damaged spots. As to who should pay for the repair, I’ll leave that to you and the roommate to figure out. At the very least, this should be a lesson that water and wood floors don’t mix. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.
