by Kathy Wolfe Tidbits is bringing you a short history lesson, testing your knowledge of wars throughout the ages. Let’s see what you know about several of the world’s conflicts. Part two will appear next week. • The first shot of the Revolutionary War, America’s war of independence from Britain, rang out on April 19, 1775 in Lexington, Massachusetts, and has been called “the shot heard round the world.” The 13 American colonies were revolting against the many high taxes imposed by Britain without giving the colonies any representation in the British Parliament. Congress summoned George Washington from his home at Mount Vernon to be commander and chief of American forces. Washington would not return home for the next six years. • The Revolutionary War raged on for eight years, with France and Spain stepping in to aid the colonists. Spain’s motive in helping the colonists was to regain land it had lost to Britain. This caused the fighting to spread to Europe, the Caribbean, and East Indies, although most was done within the colonies. • The Declaration of Independence from Britain was signed early on in the war, on July 4, 1776. The first great American victory was the Battle of Saratoga in 1777, and was a turning point toward the colonists’ eventual triumph over Britain. Turn the page for more

• In August, 1814, British troops set fire to the White House in retaliation for the U.S. attack on the city of York, Ontario, Canada. President James Madison and his wife Dolley had already abandoned their home, fleeing to safety in Maryland, leaving behind all their personal belongings. Dolley was credited with saving a full-length portrait of George Washington before their escape. • On the day after the British set fire to the White House, the Capitol, and other federal buildings, a tremendous storm and freak tornado hit Washington, D.C., putting out the fires. Oddly enough, debris from the tornado killed more British soldiers than were killed by Americans with their guns during the Washington fighting. The Madisons lived the remainder of his term in Washington, D.C.’s Octagon House. The reconstructed White House was not completed until 1817. • The well-known saying “Don’t give up the ship!” had its origins during the War of 1812. Captain James Lawrence of the U.S.S. Chesapeake shouted his last words as the ship was overtaken by the British ship HMS Shannon in 1813. Lawrence’s final words became the battle cry for sailors for generations to come. • The U.S. Civil War, the “War Between the States,” started in 1861, and by its conclusion in 1865 had left more than 620,000 men dead, 2% of the country’s population, more than any other war in American history. Prior to its beginning, eleven states had left the Union and formed their own country in order to protect slavery. War raged for four years between the North and South, with more than three million fighting at some point. • The Union had the clear advantage from the start, with 101,000 factories, compared to the Confederacy’s 21,000, and 20,000 miles of Union railroad tracks over the Confederacy’s 8,000 miles. The South’s wheat production of 35 million bushels couldn’t hope to match the 100 million bushels of the North. All the manufactured goods produced in all of the Confederate states totaled less than 25% of those produced in New York state alone. The Union horses numbered 3.4 million compared to the Confederacy’s 1.7 million.

TO OUR READERS............. Businesses need to promote who they are, where they are and what they have to offer. This can be extremely expensive to do for most business owners. Some purchase or lease a location in a high traffic area which can become extremely costly and often times does not work out as planned as they still need to inform people what sets them apart from all the other like kind businesses. The best form of marketing can be word of mouth. The referral system is great. First it does not cost the business owner any money, next it is a recommendation by someone that is usually a friend or family member who you can trust that they are recommending the business. The problem with relying on word of mouth is that you need to get the first person through the door and that gets back to marketing in one form or the other. Print marketing has always been and will continue to be the best form of paid marketing that will always work with the proper message. Print publications work the best because people have the opportunity to read and view what the message is. When the publication can be kept indefinitely by the consumer, it works even better. Some print publications work better than others. First, the publication needs to have content which people are interested in reading. Second it needs to be available to the consumer at a cost that they feel is affordable for what they receive. Third it needs to be current. Many people feel that newspapers are a thing of the past because the news is old and outdated by the time it hits the streets. That may be true with some newspapers, especially for people who actively get their news as it happens by other sources. Tidbits is unique in the fact that our content is always fresh with fun stories that can be read today, tomorrow or next year and still be entertaining. With our large circulation throughout the Linn and Johnson County corridor, we can offer our clients marketing to an extremely large audieance or break it down into either county. Business owners have to pass along all costs of doing business to the consumer. If they sell hot dogs, the cost is not just what a hot dog and bun cost. Once the business owner gets the key to a building, many cost start to add up fast without even ordering the hot dog and bun. Think about all the costs you have to live in your house or apartment. The cost to keep the raw hot dog cold is not cheap. You also may want some ketchup, mustard and onions with your hot dog. Your refrigerator does not run on air, and the insurance company will not cover fire damages if you neglect to pay the premiums. All of these add up along with some marketing costs which they now need to include in the menu price of the hotdog. Oh, did you want fries with that hotdog? As I mentioned before, there are many ways to market a business. Social networking has been a bust for many business owners as people online chatting with friends do not want someone sending them information that they have the world’s best hotdog. Now if you send them a funny video of someone stuffing hundreds of hotdogs in their mouth in under sixty seconds, they will watch it. And they will probably want to throw up at the site of your hotdog ad. Local media sites have also been a bust for marketing as none of them have proven enough traffic online to be cost effective for marketing. Business can market on the famous sites like Goggle, but without spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, they will never work. How do seniors feel about sharing their health information? A poll dealing with health-data privacy conducted last fall by Truven Health Analytics, in conjunction with National Public Radio, has the answer. Researchers wanted to know how people of different ages felt about having their health-care data shared with others, such as health plans, employers and even their own doctors. Here are some of the results, which varied widely by age: ●Asked if they had any concerns about health-care record privacy, it was the middle group (age 35 to 64) that expressed the most concern. Seniors were the least concerned of all. ● When it came to being willing to share information with researchers (if the information was anonymous), 39 percent of seniors said “no.” Ditto sharing credit-card purchases and social-media information if it would improve overall health. Seniors said “no” at 84 percent. (At that point, 98 percent of seniors hadn’t been notified that their medical records had been compromised.) Fast-forward to January 2015, and a few things have changed: ● Seniors who rejected sharing information anonymously with researchers jumped from 39 percent to 56 percent. ● When it came to sharing information for specific reasons, such as developing new treatments and reducing costs of care, seniors were the least likely age group in being willing to share. The same results were seen when seniors were asked about anonymously providing information to researchers, university professors, drug researchers and consultants: The answer was an overwhelming “no.” Why the change of opinion? The answer is likely security. By mid-2014, we’d had nearly 400 security breaches, some of them huge. By the end of 2014 there were 783 security breaches, many of which made the news. When it comes to safeguarding health information, seniors are paying attention.
