by Kathy Wolfe This week, Tidbits continues its coverage of war trivia. • World War I was the sixth deadliest conflict in history with nearly 8.6 million total military deaths for all countries involved. The Great War, as it was called at the time, was fought on every ocean and nearly every continent, although most of the fighting took place in Europe. It began in the summer of 1914 when a Serbian national assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. One month later, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Because of treaties that had been signed, binding countries to come to each other’s aid in time of war, countries began choosing sides. The Ottoman Empire (Turkey) and Germany signed a treaty within just five days of the declaration of war against Serbia. • President Woodrow Wilson of the United States stayed neutral in 1914. He held with this decision even after 128 Americans were killed when a German submarine sank the British passenger ship, the Lusitania, in May, 1915. Throughout Wilson’s campaign for his second term, his slogan was, “He kept us out of war.” However, in 1917, when German U-boats sank three U.S. merchant ships, just one month after Wilson’s victory, the U.S. declared war against Germany. turn the page for more! WARS, PART TWO (cont'd):

• The Allies of World War I were led by the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and the United States, who defeated the Central Powers, led by the German Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Ottoman Empire. • The greatest numbers of deaths were from the countries of Germany, with 1.77 million deaths, and Russia with 1.7 million. • The longest battle of World War I was the Battle of Verdun in France, spanning from February to July of 1916, resulting in nearly a million casualties. • During World War I, Manfred von Richthofen gained notoriety as the highestscoring fighter pilot. Nicknamed “The Red Baron,” this German officially shot down 80 enemy aircraft in 20 months of combat. This included 21 planes in just one month, April, 1917. His plane was shot down near Amiens, France, in April, 1918, and the 25-year-old Richthofen perished in the crash. • America’s “Ace of Aces” was Eddie Rickenbacker, a man with a colorful history. At age 24, he was a daring race car driver, setting a world speed record of 134 mph at Daytona in 1914. He didn’t even have his first ride in an airplane until 1916. Although he had a lifelong fear of heights, he had a desire to fly. Flight training required a college degree and a maximum age of 25. Claiming to be 25, he applied for training, and after just 17 days as a student pilot, he graduated and was made a lieutenant in the 94th Aero Squadron. Rickenbacker flew more combat hours than any other American pilot, and survived 134 aerial enemy FACT engagements. AfterFIRST the war, he was General Motor’s head of sales for Cadillac An American private earned $21 a and LaSallemilitary automobiles. He purchased month in 1941. WARS, PART TWO (cont'd):

• The top Canadian flying ace of the war, credited with 72 “kills” was Ontario-born hero Billy Bishop, who downed 67 of that total in just six months. • Because of the late entry into World War I, the United States only experienced 53,402 battle deaths. The estimated death toll for all countries involved topped 8.5 million. The Spanish flu was responsible for about one-third of the total military deaths. • Thirty different poisonous gases were used during World War I, with France the first country to employ gas against enemy troops. Up to 11 chances EACH WEEK to WIN at Tidbitpapers.com! Singing Therapy Helps Parkinson’s Patients

Researchers at Iowa State University have been using music as therapy for patients with Parkinson’s disease. Patients were first tested on pitch duration, vocal loudness, respiratory pressure and swallow control to set a baseline. Then, once a week for eight weeks, they all gathered together to sing simple songs. The end result? All showed significant improvement. Since Parkinson’s is progressive, being able to maintain a function can be important for continued muscle control. Participants were shown to have positive changes in voice, speaking and breathing, and experienced reduced stress and anxiety, improved communication and well-being, and even better memory as they learned new songs. The physical aspects aren’t the only areas that benefited. Interaction with others who have Parkinson’s has brought the group together socially. Even though the study is officially over, they still meet every week to keep singing ... because they know what it does for them. The program has been so successful that researchers plan to do another study for a 10-week period. They’ll test this year’s participants to see if there are differences between those who continued to sing and those who didn’t. Singing as therapy for Parkinson’s apparently isn’t new. As far back as 2011, Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago has used music and drama for their therapeutic benefits to Parkinson’s patients. It has documented benefits in movement, posture, speech and voice, as well as mood and attitude, goal setting and encouraging others. In the drama section, the participants read scripts, which helps memory recall and articulation. If you have Parkinson’s or know someone who does, investigate singing therapy in your area. If there isn’t a program, encourage the local hospital to begin one. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com. Big things are happening at Eggy’s on 965. In fact, up to 70 inches big. In addition to the “TV chandelier,” five more TV’s have also been installed upon the walls of the new mini-bar upstairs, a couple which are hanging from the high ceilings and sit right in front of the ledge. Originally, the restaurant had about six TV’s that were only on the main floor. Now there are fifteen in the entire building. Even though fifteen TV’s might sound excessive, the building certainly has the space for it and the versatility. Now guests don’t have to look as far in the main level dining area to watch their favorite sports every week. Huge waiting lists can choose to dine or grab a drink at the mini bar upstairs if it gets too crowded on the main floor. Private parties can rent out the upstairs area and have the option to use the smart TV’S to show pictures, videos, or choose their own channel to watch separately. But if you’re not the type to stare at a TV for enjoyment, Eggy’s also has that covered. The restaurant has been slowly integrating live music where local favorites, such as Two Buck Chuck, have performed with the hopes of eventually becoming a weekly event. “We’re trying something new,” said Jarbo, “but mainly we’re just trying to make everybody happy.”

The Heat Is On

Growing up in the desert heat is very hard on the paint job of a car. Over a period of exposure to the outside elements the paint oxidizes. Left unprotected to the brutal UV rays of the sun, the life of the paint will fade away. So the result is a dull vehicle traveling on the roads throughout the course of a day. You won’t notice the damage immediately as it occurs over a period of time. Our lives are very similar as we are exposed to the elements of this world that are very hard on us. The results are very similar to an oxidized car as we become dull and unattractive. The damage is done over a gradual period of time and before we know it, we are parked in a lifeless parking spot. Paint oxidation is not the kiss of death. A dual process can take place to bring back the luster of the original shine much like the dual process that can take place to bring the shine that God originally meant for us. There is a compound applied to the faded life that rubs the contamination and dead particles away. Then there is a polish that comes next to restore the body to a shining state. “Let your (paint) light so shine before all men that they might see your good in works and Glorify your Father who is in Heaven.” The Word of God provides the dual process of applying the compound and the polish.
