What happens if you click your heels together three times? It makes you the Wicked Witch. TIDBITS® LOOKS AT THE

AGE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT

by Kathy Wolfe How do we measure up to the feats of others? This week, Tidbits investigates the age of these achievers at the time of their accomplishments. • Mary, Queen of Scots became Queen of Scotland when she was just six days old, upon the death of her father. Scotland was ruled by regents throughout her childhood. When Mary was 16, she married the French Dauphin Francis, who became King Francis II when she was 17. The union lasted only two years, as Francis died in 1560, and Mary returned to Scotland. Her life did not have a happy ending, as she was beheaded for plotting the assassination of her cousin Queen Elizabeth I of England. • Some golfers might never shoot a 48 for nine holes of golf, but Tiger Woods achieved this feat at age 3. He had already been featured in Golf Digest by the age of 5. • Judy Garland made her first stage appearance at age 2, when she joined her singing siblings in an act called The Gumm Sisters. She went on to a film career spanning over 40 years, and is immortalized as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, although she made more than 35 other films. Despite her extraordinary talent, Judy was unable to deal with the demands of fame, and turned to drugs and alcohol. She perished from an overdose of barbiturates at age 47. turn the page for more!

AGE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT (cont'd): • Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie competed in her first Olympics at Chamonix, France, at age 11 finishing dead last. But just four years later she took the gold medal, followed by two more wins in 1932 and 1936. Her performances took place on outdoor rinks in the cold and wind. Although she performed in a knee-length wool skirt, she didn’t need to worry about that hampering her jumps – in her day, it was deemed “unladylike to jump into the air” or perform spins. Sonja retired at age 23, moved to Hollywood, and became one of the industry’s highest paid movie stars of her day. • Two actresses were presented Oscars for Best Supporting Actress at very young ages. Ten-year-old Tatum O’Neal received the honor for her performance in 1973’s Paper Moon, while Anna Paquin was the winner at age 11 in 1994 for her role in The Piano. In 1935, six-year-old Shirley Temple was awarded the very first Juvenile Oscar, a special honorary Academy Award for “her outstanding contribution to screen entertainment during the year 1934.” Shirley began her film career at age 3 and retired in 1950 at age 22. She later served as U.S. Ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia. • Jessica Tandy was 80 years old when she was awarded her first Oscar, Best Actress in 1989’s Driving Miss Daisy. Another 80-year-old, George Burns, took home his first Oscar for the 1975 film The Sunshine Boys. • Theodore Roosevelt was the youngest President in U.S. history when he was elected at 42 years, 10 months in 1904. Ronald Reagan holds the record for the oldest at 69 years, 11 months when he was elected in 1980 and re-elected at age 73. When they first invented the clock, how did they know what time it was to set it to?

AHaveMoMMA’s FAith you ever had anyone say something that changed

your life? It could have been a phrase, a sentence, or even an encouraging word that you needed to help you get over a speed bump. There is an unidentified hero in scripture. She was an unnamed mom that was driven by desperation, love, and vision for her kid who was involved and held captive by evil and bad choices. She had tried everything that was offered in her timeline. Nothing worked!!! She heard, believed, and chased a man named Jesus because she had vision and faith He could help. The problem was; 1) she was a woman, 2) she was not Jewish, and 3) she came from a hostile country that was at war with Israel. WOW, can you imagine the faith this woman had to jump over those hurdles. When she arrived on scene, she was ignored, chastised and encouraged to go home. Jesus took her aside and began a life changing conversation. After their ping pong match he said, YOU HAVE GREAT FAITH!!! Her daughter was healed that very instance. This woman crossed barriers, persisted in her driven state, and saw something far better than what was being presented to her. Here is what I can learn from this no name momma’s faith; Don’t let obstacles stop you, Persevere through the storms of life, and Believe.

AGE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT (cont'd): • When she was born in 1912, the press called Doris Duke the “million dollar baby.” She was the only child of American tobacco baron James Duke, who headed a company in business since the Civil War. Her father’s donation of $40 million resulted in a name change from Trinity College in Durham, North Carolina, to Duke University. When Doris was 12, her father died and bequeathed her upwards of $30 million, leaving only a modest trust fund to her mother. At 14, Doris sued her mother to keep her from selling the family assets. Over the course of her lifetime, Doris increased her father’s fortune by four times. She spent much of her time traveling and was an avid art collector. Doris also owned five homes, including a 2000-acre New Jersey farm, a penthouse on Park Avenue, a Beverly Hills mansion, a Hawaiian palace, and a summer home in Newport, Rhode Island. When she died in 1993, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation was worth about $1.2 billion.

• Noted French painter Claude Monet was 60 when he began work on his famous water lilies series of paintings. The group of 250 works were this Impressionist’s depiction of his flower garden at Giverny. He suffered from cataracts in both eyes when many of the panels were painted, and underwent a risky eye surgery at age 82, which was not overly successful. In 2014, one of the Water Lilies paintings sold at a Christie’s auction for $27 million. • Greek runner Dimitrion Yordanidis was 98 when he completed a 26-mile marathon in 7 hours, 33 minutes, in 1976. It took 100-year-old Fajua Singh a little longer, just over 8 hours, to finish the Toronto Marathon in 2011. Compare these to the record marathon time of just over 2 hours, 2 minutes. • Most folks haven’t heard of Hulda Crooks, an American mountaineer. This incredible woman climbed Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the continental United States, and Japan’s Mt. Fuji at age 91. In fact, she climbed to Mt. Whitney’s 14,505-foot peak 23 times between the ages of 65 and 91, along with 97 other peaks. At 95, she was still walking two miles every day. Hulda lived to be 101.

“The secret to staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age.” –

AGE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT (cont'd): • Famed astronaut John Glenn was 40 years old when he became the first American to orbit Earth, making three orbits aboard Friendship 7 in February, 1962. The Ohio-born Glenn was a 22-year-old Marine when he was deployed to the Pacific Front in World War II, flying 59 combat missions over the course of the war. During the Korean War, he served on 90 missions. At 38, he was selected for the U.S. Space Program. Glenn retired from NASA two years after his historic flight into space. At age 53, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, and at 63, made an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. In 1998, at age 77, after an absence of 36 years, John Glenn returned to space aboard the space shuttle Discovery, becoming the oldest person to fly in space. The mission lasted nine days and included a study on aging and space travel. Glenn returned to his senatorial duties for another year, retiring at 78. • At 95, Grandma Moses, who had taken up painting at age 78, wrote, “…in olden times, things were not so rushed. I think people were more content, more satisfied with life than they are today. You don’t hear nearly as much laughter and shouting as you did in my day, and what was fun for us wouldn’t be fun now.” This renowned American folk artist generated 1,500 paintings over three decades before passing away at age 101.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

* Using ice-cold sour cream instead of icecold water in your pie crust recipe will give you a flakier crust. * “If you love to burn candles as much as I do, consider storing them in the refrigerator for a day or so before burning them. I swear, it makes them burn evenly. Someone told me this once, and I tried it and have been doing it ever since. No more crooked candles.” -- J.L. in Tennessee * Kitchen remodels can be expensive, but when your kitchen isn’t usable, that’s even more of an expense. Instead of opting for takeout food, set up an alternate kitchen to save money. A microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot and a small dorm-style fridge can take care of a lot of your needs in the short term. * Planning on putting in some new plants or sprucing up your garden this spring? Check with your town’s yardwaste recycling center about free mulch or compost. Many facilities offer these to their residents. Albert Einstein used to go to dinners where he was invited to give a speech. One day, on his way to one of those dinners, he told his chauffeur (who looked exactly like him) that he was dead tired of giving the same speech, dinner after dinner. "Well," said the chauffeur, "I've got a good idea. Why don't I give the speech since I've heard it so many times?'' So Albert's chauffeur gave the speech perfectly and even answered a few questions. Then, a professor stood up and asked him a really tough question about antimatter which the chauffeur couldn't answer "Sir, the answer to your question is so easy that I'll let my chauffeur answer it!"

The book was the first “serious” Western and one of the most influential in the genre. It became a sensation almost overnight, selling more than 1.5 million copies by 1938 and inspiring four movies and a Broadway play. * On May 26, 1927, Henry Ford and his son Edsel drive the 15 millionth Model T Ford out of their factory on the final day of production. The Model T had a 20-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and could travel up to 45 mph. * On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa of Nepal, become the first explorers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. News of their achievement broke around the world on June 2, the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. * On May 31, 1962, in Israel, Nazi SS officer Adolf Eichmann is executed for his crimes against humanity during World War II. Following the war, Eichmann was captured by U.S. troops, but escaped before having to face the Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal. Eichmann fled to Argentina, where he was found by agents of the Mossad, Israel’s intelligence service. * On May 25, 1977, the first of George Lucas’ blockbuster Star Wars movies hits U.S. theaters. Star Wars was soon a pop-culture phenomenon. Over the years it has spawned more feature films, TV series and an entire industry’s worth of comic books, toys and video games. Home Instead Senior Care Proudly Presents

Senior News Line By Matilda Charles

The Heat Is On And here comes summer ... For many of us around the country, this past winter was a brutal one, and long. Now that the weather is warming up, we’re eager to enjoy it. Seniors need to be cautious, however, in dealing with summer. If you don’t have fans or air conditioning, start looking now for places that donate fans to seniors. Try the local senior center, fire department or town offices. They’re likely to know when and where fans will be given out. If you live in a humid area, consider whether buying a one-room window air conditioner will help. Besides cooling the air, they remove moisture, which makes it feel cooler. If you can, sign up for afternoon classes at the senior center or spend afternoons at the library, movies or mall. Seniors often don’t sense their level of thirst, either from aging or medications. Know the signs of dehydration: dry mouth, headache, limb cramps, dark urine or only a small amount of urine, or being unable to sleep. Becoming dehydrated can have serious effects on the body’s organs, so be sure to drink enough water. Caffeinated or sugared drinks like coffee and soft drinks will only make things worse. Ask your doctor for a specific number of ounces of water you should drink per day. Remember: If you’re thirsty, you’re already getting dehydrated. Dress lightly (but carry a sweater in case you go into air-conditioned spaces), and wear sunglasses and a woven wide-brim hat when you go out. Start planning now for recipes that don’t heat up the kitchen. Consider sandwiches, salads, fruit and vegetables that cook quickly. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOTEWORTHY INVENTORS:

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

Not only was Benjamin Franklin one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, he was a gifted inventor, author, printer, politician, postmaster, scientist, civic activist, statesman, and foreign diplomat. There might be a few things on this list that you didn’t know were Franklin’s creations! • Born in Boston in 1706, Franklin’s formal schooling ended at age 10. At 12, he began an apprenticeship in his brother’s print shop. • His first invention came along when Franklin was 11. An enthusiastic swimmer, he developed a pair of swim fins. They weren’t what we think of today as flippers, but rather were a pair of oval planks with holes in the center that were attached to the hands. • At 17, Franklin moved to Philadelphia, where he worked in print shops over the next few years. At 22, he set up his own shop, and the following year began publishing his own newspaper. Always an avid reader, Franklin came up with the idea of fellow book lovers sharing their books with others, as well as pooling funds to buy more books for the group. Franklin’s idea turned into the Library Company of Philadelphia, the first subscription library. When he was 33, the collection was moved to Independence Hall. • Franklin’s love of books led to his invention of the “long arm,” a wooden pole with a grasping claw on the end that enabled him to reach books on high shelves. • When Franklin was 36, he devised a metallined fireplace with rear baffles for better airflow. Placed in the middle of the room, this cast iron stove radiated heat in all directions and kept the room warm hours after the fire went out. In addition to greater heat, the Franklin stove produced less smoke than an open fireplace and used less wood. • Serving as Philadelphia’s postmaster for 16 years led to Franklin’s invention of an improved odometer. It began with his curiosity as to how far he was traveling by carriage between Philadelphia and Boston, carrying out his postmaster duties. He attached a geared device to the rear wheel of his carriage, measuring the revolutions made by the wheel. Every 400 revolutions caused the device to register ahead one mile. He used his invention to streamline the mail delivery, measuring the distances between postal stations to develop more efficient mail routes. • Franklin was even responsible for a musical instrument called the hydrocrystalophone, which in simpler terms was known as the glass armonica. His armonica consisted of a series of glass bowls of graduated size floating in a tray of water. The varying sizes produced different musical tones based on the size of the bowl. Before long, it was being played in concert halls across Europe and America, and even Mozart and Beethoven composed music for it. • At 79, Franklin was still coming up with new ideas. Suffering from presbyopia, he conceived the idea of “double spectacles,” which allowed him to see distant objects as well as see close work. He hired his optician to use lenses from two sets of glasses, cutting them horizontally, and putting them into frames. It was the birth of bifocals! • Benjamin Franklin did not patent a single one of his inventions, choosing to gift them to the public. In his words, “As we benefit from the inventions of others, we should be glad to share our own, freely and gladly.”

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta

Top 5 Home Upgrades Q: What upgrades to our house will pay off the most in the long run? -- Karl V., Melrose, Massachusetts A: Many people think that remodeling the kitchen is an expense they can fully recoup (in terms of home value or resale value), but that is not necessarily the case. According to Remodeling Magazine, which puts out a Cost vs. Value chart each year on home remodeling, a major kitchen remodel averaging $56,768 will recoup 67.8 percent of that cost, or just $38,485. However, a number of indoor and outdoor projects will increase the value of your home. Here are five projects on the midrange cost scale that will provide the biggest return for your remodeling investment: 1. Entry door: Replacing your entry door with a steel door will recoup 101.8 percent of the cost. (Replacing it with a fiberglass door will return 72 percent.) 2. Veneer: Replacing the bottom third of your home’s exterior siding with manufactured stone veneer will recoup 92.2 percent of the cost. 3. Garage door: Replacing your garage door will recoup 88.4 percent of the cost. 4. Siding replacement: Adding vinyl siding to your home’s exterior will recoup 80.7 percent of the cost. 5. Wooden deck: Adding or expanding a wooden deck will recoup 80.5 percent of the cost. Other projects that have a higher chance of recouping their cost include a minor (below $20,000) kitchen remodel (79.3 percent), wood window replacement (78.8 percent) or converting part of your attic to a bedroom (77.2 percent). Remodeling your bathroom will recoup 70 percent of its cost. So, when putting together a remodeling project list, take their lasting value into account. You may decide to downscale that ambitious kitchen or bathroom remodel and shift some of the budget to your home’s exterior elements. TIP: Wood or vinyl windows? Carefully consider the merits of both before deciding on replacement windows. For example, wood windows are aesthetically pleasing, but vinyl windows require almost no maintenance. *** NOTE: This is my final print column for This Is A Hammer. Public Beware!

I feel the need to inform you that if you read the article below, you must take it very light heartily. Mainly because while I maybe the publisher of this Tidbits paper, I'm not a journalist. If I even thought I was and wrote regular articles I would not have a publication as I would not have regular readers. So the following topic is of my own opinion, I hope you can appreciate what I have wrote because I feel the need for public awareness that history should not be forgotten. Most of us seem good at learning from our own mistakes, but many do not seem to learn by others mistakes. As a Tidbits publisher, I receive great content which most people seem to really enjoy and that is what makes this publication so great! Tidbits Media Inc. in Montgomery, Alabama supports over 300 Tidbit publishers around the country and since we do not need to independently hire staff writers, I'm not able to farm what's on my mind to a staff reporter. So I will take my best stab at what's on my mind and hope for the best. Its going to be hard since it seems that what I will be writing about can be construed as political, however I'm not trying to poke at one political party or the other here, I'm just wondering why some decisions are made. In the late fourth century, the Western Roman Empire crumbled after a nearly 500-year run as the world’s greatest superpower. Historians have blamed the collapse on hundreds of different factors ranging from military failures and crippling taxation to natural disasters and even climate change. Still others argue that the Roman Empire didn’t really fall in 476 A.D., since its eastern half continued for another thousand years in the form of the Byzantine Empire. While just how— and when—the Empire fell remains a subject of ongoing debate, certain theories have emerged as the most popular explanations for Western Rome’s decline and disintegration. 1. Invasions by Barbarian tribes 2. Economic troubles and overreliance on slave labor 3. The rise of the Eastern Empire 4. Overexpansion and military overspending 5. Government corruption and political instability 6. The arrival of the Huns and the migration of the Barbarian tribes 7. Christianity and the loss of traditional values 8. Weakening of the Roman legions

Since my days in school I have watched many so-called documentaries and read many books and related articles about the fall of other societies. I mentioned so-called documentaries as I'm quite a skeptic when it comes to someone who can only give their interpretation to events. However, I do feel that after considering many various accounts a person can come to some reasonable conclusions. So the conclusion to the fall of the Roman Empire seems to be that all roads lead to anarchy. Noted above with 1-8, most governments have eventually failed, whether it's been a tribal, dictatorship, fascism ruling family, communism, monarchy, socialism, or any other of the many forms of ruling governments that exist or have in the past. So now comes some of my ponderous questions with our local and federal government here in the United States. Please skip this part if it could offend your way of thinking and continue with the other pages only. Racism, it does exist and we need it to stop or we can never allow this country to heal from our own civil war. We are all human and bleed the same blood. I was sixteen and at a flea market in Tennessee and someone that was probably thirtyish made the comment to me that I was a Yankee. At sixteen I didn't even understand what that really meant other I was from the North. At eighteen I entered an all black bar in the south by myself and I think I may have a slight understanding what a black person may feel in an all

white surrounding. I was not treated badly but was informed that it would be best if I were to leave. When people are not treated fairly due to their race it can be a major problem not just for the individual but our society as a whole. Treaties were not made to be broken but white settlers and early entrepreneurs often times did not follow what their political powers at the time agreed too. Native Americans were often treated with hate regardless of their own individual intensions. In today's times it is often said that laws are to be broken. Even non-laws but programs are often broken just for political and or financial gain. Take for example, our Coralville water reservoir. I grew up on a lake and still own a boat and canoe. So I love water sports and the tranquility water can offer for our relaxation. So for those that enjoy the benefits of the reservoir as it is today, please don't call me an complain about this next part. After the 2008 flood I did some research of my own and found that in 1938 Congress passed a flood control act requesting the Army Corps of Engineers to control flooding on navigable rivers across the country. After a few years, the Army Corps of Engineers developed a plan to accomplish this by controlling the flow of water from tributary rivers. They determined that the best approach for many of these rivers would be to construct a flood control water reservoir. Each reservoir was only designed for flood control and not recreation. The concept was to hold back water as necessary and slow release the water when possible allowing the reservoir not to hold any water during the winter months. The time frame to construct this project was less than 10 years. By the time this and other reservoirs were completed, congress revised their plans and set minimum water levels for the Army Corps of Engineers to maintain for water recreation. Well, the Army Corps of Engineers are very smart and realized that they no longer could properly control flooding of the navigable rivers. Therefore why continue to build more reservoirs if the current ones could not contain all the excess water during the summer months. The Army Corps of Engineers seemed to know that someday water would need to be released in excess of desired amounts and possible overflow past the spillways. In 2010, the Nashville flood should have been prevented by not allowing the reservoir there to keep water year round as they also have a flood control only reservoir. That reservoir was not designed

for recreation either as stated on the Corps web site. We the people (Tax Payers) have allowed congress to allocate money to build very expensive flood control only structures. But we the people have allowed for these flood only structures to not be properly used. Thus causing we the people to allow our government to spend billions of dollars to rebuild what was destroyed by floods and could have been prevented. Federal tax money is being spent all the time when all along we should have been protected by proper flood control that the Army Corps of Engineers spent tax money to devise a great plan to prevent these problems. The reservoirs were not meant to save cities like Coralville and Iowa City. But with good sound planning, that was the spin off benefit for protecting the Mississippi from flooding. However, the Army Corps of Engineers would need to build additional reservoirs along hundreds of other rivers across the country in order to complete their 1938 flood protection goal of navigable rivers. As I understand it, the Army Corps of Engineers had planned to put a reservoir upstream of Waterloo. The Cedar River will never flood Cedar Rapids with only localized heavy rain. High waters from upstream need to be present before Cedar Rapids could ever have another major flood. If a water reservoir was built north of Waterloo, then all communities and farm land could be protected from flooding downstream. (Considering that the reservoir was only used for flood protection or if it would be designed as a dual purpose reservoir with recreation water levels figured into the original plans). Then all of our worries and planning would be resolved and we could concentrate on other issues to better our way of life. In fact with better control of river water levels, plans for river walks and other recreation along the rivers could flourish since flooding would no longer need to be considered for these types of projects. The city of Cedar Rapids sent out a weekly flyer after the 2008 flood. I’m working from memory as I don’t have that flyer at hand now. But it listed various flood measures they were considering. The number one item they listed that would protect the city by 100% was a water reservoir. Keep in mind this was shortly after the 2008 flood and they obviously knew of the flooding that was below the Coralville water reservoir. Now they stated in the flyer that they will need to take ten years to plan what to do. However as stated above, the Coralville reservoir took Continued Page 15

less than ten years to construct and now they stated that a reservoir would take too long to build. They also stated that a reservoir would be too costly to build. I strongly disagree with this statement since the payer is the Federal Government and the Federal Government is the one who will be paying for most of the sound projects along the Cedar River. I’m sure that the cost of a single water reservoir would not exceed what both Waterloo and Cedar Rapids planners have in mind. However, Cedar Rapids planners are probably only considering that they want Federal money spent in this town and not somewhere else. This would be very short sighted of people as a reservoir would protect all communities, including those that will never see any separate flood control measures installed around them. Next on the flyer they had several different projects, and if all were completed (Levies, flood walls, neighbourhoods let to flood etc..) they stated that they would prevent future floods by 70%. What is wrong with this concept? Why would anyone even consider anything less than 100% protection when it is possible to achieve? Moving levies and building high flood walls will only cause flood waters to flow around them further upstream. The sheer volume of water that came through our communities during the 2008 flood was so great that it is hard to fathom the height needed to protect the communities, but yet could be held back by a reservoir. I have sent my comments to many politicians, but only one has ever responded. He has some good ideas about establishing wet lands and other areas to temporally flood, however when a single project could be all that is needed, why spend all the time, energy and tax money to reinvent a flood plan? Anarchy within our government. I'm not necessarily against the legalization of Marijuana but I strongly disagree with how some states have gone about their legalization practices. States that want to legalize marijuana or allow anything within their state that our Federal government has laws against should be going about this differently. States should be requesting the federal government to allow them to make their own interpretations of such rulings. But currently the federal government seems to be ignoring their adoption of these state laws even though the federal government could step in at anytime and begin making arrests. This is the same problem we have with our immigration policies. We would not need any boarder walls and our boarder security could be reduced greatly if the current laws were just enforced. Our dilemma now is that these laws have been ignored so often over the last several decades that now this has become a very sensitive issue along with how to actually enforce the current laws. I'm not against immigration as that is what made up this land. If the first settlers were denied entry by the Native Americans I probably would never have been born. Obviously, I would not have been born in the USA if this had happened. To me this is not a discrimination issue either, but it sure

seems to be focused that way. I have many and 2014, Cedar Rapids cited more than 160,000 motorists for speeding on the Hispanic friends, in fact I even sold a house on contract for deed to a family who interstate through town, including 16,537 from Minnesota. are Native Mexicans.
