TIDBITS® REMEMBERS SOME

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

by Kathy Wolfe What thoughts go through a person’s mind in their last moments on Earth? This week, Tidbits recalls the famous last words of these well-known folks. • Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti was enjoying a wildly successful career when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2006. One year later, Pavarotti proclaimed his final words, “I believe that a life lived for music is an existence spent wonderfully, and this is what I have dedicated my life to,” and went to sing with the angels. • Frenchman Nostradamus was an apothecary who published several collections of prophecies, which have rarely been out of print since his death. Followers of Nostradamus credit him with predicting many major world events. There was one event he predicted very accurately – his death. On July 1, 1566, he told his assistant, “Tomorrow at sunrise, I shall no longer be here.” Indeed, it was true. • In 1960, James W. Rodgers stood before a Utah firing squad awaiting his execution for the 1957 murder of a miner. His answer to the usual question, “Any last requests?” was, “Bring me a bullet-proof vest.” Rodgers was the last person to die by the firing squad in the U.S. for the next 17 years. … turn the page for more!

• Once a grammarian, always a grammarian! The famous French grammar expert Dominique Bouhours lay on his death bed and spoke, “I am about to – or I am going to – die: either expression is correct.” • And speaking of all things proper, as Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, was being escorted to the guillotine to be executed for treason in 1793, she accidentally stepped on the foot of her executioner. This very polite lady expressed the apology, “Monsieur, I beg your pardon.” • After being diagnosed with cancer, legendary movie critic Roger Ebert wrote to the faithful readers of his blog that he would be taking leave for his treatment. The final words of his farewell were, fittingly, “I’ll see you at the movies.” • Who knows what Apple Computers cofounder Steve Jobs saw when he passed from this life to the next? His sister Patty reports that at the moment that pancreatic cancer claimed the life of this creative genius, he looked over her shoulder and proclaimed, “Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.” • One of the greatest basketball players of all time, Pete Maravich, had a magnificent ten-year career with the NBA. A severe knee injury forced him to retire in 1980. In 1988, while playing a pickup basketball game in the gym at a Pasadena, California, church, “Pistol Pete” collapsed and died at age 40, less than one minute after saying, “I feel great.” An autopsy revealed that he had been born without a left coronary artery, necessary for supplying blood to the heart’s muscle fibers. The right coronary artery had been compensating for the heart defect his entire life without his knowledge and it finally gave out.

"I hope to meet each of you in heaven. Be good children, all of you, and strive to be ready when the change comes." --7th U.S. President Andrew Jackson

Tools 4 life By DR. Jim coyle

WALK by Faith

I recently spent 2 days watching world class athletes compete at the Drake Relays. We had the perfect seats on the final turn as we witnessed the grimaces and determination of these competitors race to the finish line. The most inspiring of all was watching a blind man race the Paralympic 200 M as these athletes are preparing to compete in the Beijing 2016 Olympics. He had another world class runner beside him with a rope between them. His job was to keep the blind athlete in his lane as he made the turns. This disabled athlete gave it everything he had in running the race of his lifetime. As he ran by us I notice he had sunglasses with gold metallic tape over the lens. His faith eyes were focused on the gold at the finish line. We have an incredible presence of a savior running beside us in the race of our lives. Let us learn to rely on His tug to keep us in our lane and to stay faith focused on the gold at the finish line. Here is an acronym as we “walk by faith and not by sight.” • Work - Walking by faith means working and living life in light of eternal consequences. • Aim - We must work with aim, purpose, and direction. • Love - We must be anchored in love with every thought, choice, and action. • Kindness - Every step we take must leave an imprint of kindness.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS (cont'd):

• Many famous men had kind words for their beloved before they passed into the Great Beyond. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who penned the stories of Sherlock Holmes, died in his garden with his wife at his side. After suffering a massive heart attack, he looked at her and said, “You are wonderful.” The last words of actor John Wayne, dying of stomach cancer, directed toward his wife were, “Of course I know who you are. You’re my girl. I love you.” Legendary coach Vince Lombardi died just three days after his 30th wedding anniversary, and the last words whispered to his wife Marie were, “Happy anniversary. I love you.” • There’s a difference of opinion on the last words of actor Humphrey Bogart. Some sources hold to the belief that he spoke, “Goodbye, Kid. Hurry back,” to wife Lauren Bacall as she left his bedside in the hospital to go pick up their children. When she returned, he was comatose and never regained consciousness. Others claim his final remark was, “I should never have switched from Scotch to Martinis.”

• Baseball great Joe DiMaggio wasn’t with the one he loved when he passed on in 1999. Although married to actress Marilyn Monroe for just nine months in 1954, he carried a torch for her for the remainder of his life. After her death in 1962, Joe had roses sent to her grave twice a week for 20 years. His final words were, “I’ll finally get to see Marilyn.”

• What was on the minds of U.S. Presidents as they prepared to face the I was in Seattle and stopped just inside a building Great Beyond? First President George for directions. "I knew it had to be the Microsoft Washington seemed fulfilled with his Building, because they gave me a technically life, if his last words in 1799 are any correct but completely useless answer." evidence: “It is well, I die hard, but I am not afraid to go.” Grover Cleveland remains the only U.S. President to KEVIN’S A-1 serve two non-consecutive terms as the 22nd and the 24th chief executive. Well-known for his honesty, integrity, and fight against political corruption, it seems fitting that his last words, while in the throes of a gastro-intestinal disease, The best Comprehensive would be, “I have tried so hard to do Warranty on the market right.” Franklin D. Roosevelt stated, “I 901 Oakland Rd NE CEDAR RAPIDS ●319-365-8308 have a terrific headache,” just moments Monday - Friday: 9am - 5pm before he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage Kevin’s A-1 Vacuum in 1945. • Presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy had no idea that their last words would in fact be their last. As Lincoln and his wife sat in Ford’s Theater watching the play “Our American Cousin,” Mary Todd Lincoln, worried about the opinions of the women seated next to them in their theater box, whispered to her husband, “What will Miss Harris think of my hanging on to you so?” Abe’s last words before being shot by John Wilkes Booth were, “She won’t think anything about it.” As Kennedy rode in a Dallas motorcade in 1963, the wife of Governor John Connelly commented to him, “You certainly cannot say that the people of Dallas haven’t given you a nice welcome, Mr. President.” His answer of, “No, you certainly can’t,” were his final words before his assassination by Lee Harvey Oswald. • Even the poet, Emily Dickinson, author of more than 1,800 poems, pronounced her last words in 1886, “I must go in, for the fog is rising.”

* On May 16, 1849, the New York City Board of Health is finally able to establish a hospital to deal with a cholera epidemic that would kill more than 5,000 people. The disease took hold on Dec. 1, 1848, when a ship arrived from France carrying the bodies of seven passengers who had died from cholera. * On May 15, 1937, Madeleine Albright, America’s first female secretary of state, is born in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). After immigrating to the United States in 1948, her father, Josef Korbel, became dean at the University of Denver, where he would later train another female secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice. * On May 12, 1957, race-car driver A.J. Foyt scores his first professional victory, in a U.S. Automobile Club midget car race in Kansas City, Missouri. Foyt raced midgets and stock cars before moving up to bigger things in 1958, when he entered his first Indianapolis 500 race. * On May 17, 1970, Norwegian ethnologist Thor Heyerdahl and a multinational crew set out from Morocco across the Atlantic Ocean in Ra II, a papyrus sailing craft modeled after ancient Egyptian sailing vessels. The Ra II crossed the 4,000 miles of ocean to Barbados in 57 days. * On May 11, 1985, 50 people die in a fire in the grandstand at a soccer stadium in Bradford, England. The wooden roof, which burned in just four minutes, was scheduled to be replaced by a steel roof later that same week. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Senior News Line By Matilda Charles

Want to Feel Better? Start Cleaning House

--Seniors feel better after cleaning the house, according to a study done by the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing. Who knew? Researchers looked at various influences on a senior's health and emotional well-being, such as environment, smoking, income, education, health, socioeconomics and exercise. The participants (ages 65 to 94) had one serious illness, were enrolled in both Medicaid and Medicare, and had physical limitations that kept them from at least one daily task, such as bathing, handling medications or dressing. What the researchers didn't expect was that doing housework and maintaining their own property had more of an impact on seniors than, for example, neighborhood poverty. They were able to prove what they'd seen: Seniors who lived in a neat and tidy environment were more satisfied than those whose environment was chaotic. I saw something similar when I helped a frail neighbor clean out her pantry. While roomy, the pantry was a jumble of items stacked on top of one another amid outdated, expired food. It was difficult to even write a grocery list because it was impossible to tell at a glance what she had. Once the pantry was neat and organized, she was delighted, and when I saw her again, she had started on the magazines and newspapers that were piled high on every flat surface, managing to take small arm loads to the recycling bin outside her back door. She was quite proud of her accomplishment. The lesson here: With a small amount of effort, we can keep our environment neat (and safer) ... and the exercise is good for us.
