• Canada’s current maple leaf flag of red and white has only been the country’s official flag since 1965 when it was proclaimed so by Queen Elizabeth II. Prior to that, Canada had used the Canadian Red Ensign since 1870. Red and white are the official colors of Canada, declared by King George V in 1921. • Red is the color of blood and fire and often symbolizes love, passion, and romance, as well as strength, courage, and leadership. It’s associated with anger, danger, and malice as well.

by Kathy Wolfe Hurray for the red, white, and blue! This is the perfect week for Tidbits to examine these three colors and their meanings and usage. • The red of the American flag is symbolic of valor and bravery, while white signifies purity and innocence. Blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

• There are hundreds of varieties of red wine grapes, each offering a different flavor to the beverage. The region of Bordeaux, France, is the original home of many familiar red grapes, including the cabernet sauvignon, which contributes a flavor of black currant, and the merlot, which offers a hint of chocolate or fruitcake. Bordeaux is the world’s major wine capital, where Bordeaux wine has been produced since the 8th century. turn the page for more

• Surveys indicate that the color most often associated with innocence, purity, perfection, and honesty is white. Although royal brides have worn white for centuries, it didn’t become the color of wedding gowns for the commoner until the 19th century. Prior to that, brides just wore their Sunday best. In China, it is symbolic of death and mourning, and people wear white to funerals. • Brides in China usually wear red, because it’s the color of happiness and fortune. The Chinese bride walks down a red carpet to meet her groom, who lifts her red veil. When the couple has children, friends and family give them red eggs. During Chinese New Year, homes are decorated with red, red clothing is worn, and unmarried children are given red envelopes filled with “luck money.” Those who follow feng shui, the art of balancing the energies of a space to promote health and good fortune, say that painting your home’s front door red invites prosperity.

• The Chicago White Sox began as the White Stockings in 1900. Their new home, Comiskey Park, opened in 1910 on the former site of a city dump and remained the team’s ballpark for the next 80 years. The first-ever All-Star game was played there in 1933. At the time of its demolition in 1991, Comiskey was Major League Baseball’s oldest park still in use. Famous White Sox players include Goose Gossage, Tom Seaver, and Steve Carlton. • Combine all the possible tones of all the different frequencies that a human can hear and you have what is called white noise. It takes its name from the way that white light works. White light is made up of all the color frequencies of light combined. It’s what the human eye sees when it looks at light that contains all of the wavelengths of color’s visible spectrum.

Tools 4 life By DR. Jim coyle Faith vs. Immediate Gratification A man parched from the hot sun on a desert journey came across a water pump with a jug that had enough water for a few swallows. The note attached to the jug said if you prime the pump with the water you will have all the water you need and then some. The man had to make a decision to satisfy his immediate thirst with a few sips or believe the words and use every drop of water in the jug to prime the pump and get more. What would you do? We live in a fast-food mentality world that has trickled into a generation of decision-making based on immediate gratification at the drive-up window. The man decided to trust and primed the pump. Water came flowing in abundance to satisfy his thirst and the ground he was standing on. He put a few sips of water back in the jug and added a PS to the note, “BELIEVE, IT REALLY WORKS!” www.pastoralcarecentercr.com

• If you’ve ever been asked to bring a white elephant to a party, you know to pack along something that you don’t want, perhaps an inexpensive, useless, or humorous item. This term has its origins in Southeast Asia in ancient times. Tradition states that the mother of Buddha dreamed of a white elephant presenting her with a lotus flower on the eve of her son’s birth. The white elephant was considered sacred, and a monarch who possessed one reigned with justice and power. However, because the animal was sacred, it could not be put to any practical use, although it cost a considerable sum to maintain. It became burdensome to keep, but the owner could not dispose of it. • Looking at the color blue can promote rest and cause the body to produce calming chemicals that release feelings of tranquility. Experts in feng shui tell us that blue is the perfect choice for the bathroom because of its tranquil and healing properties. Some cultures believe that blue keeps bad spirits away. In Iran it’s the color of mourning. To those of the Jewish faith, blue is the color of holiness. In China, it represents immortality. • There are more than 700 species of the flowering plant indigofera. Although we think of indigo as a dye used to color our denim jeans blue, other varieties are effective as anti-inflammatories to relieve the pain of bug stings, snake bites, swelling, and ulcers. Colonial planters in the mid-18th century began exporting the plants, but indigo had been a major source of capital for India since around 300 B.C.
A police recruit was asked during the exam, "What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?" He said: "Call for backup." A single red rose shows love, a dozen shows gratitude, twenty-five shows congratulations and fifty means I messed up.

RED, WHITE & BLUE
(continued):
• The word “blue” has found its way into our language in several different arenas. Stocks that are solid and stable are called blue-chip stocks and a first-place winner is awarded the blue ribbon. Laws designed to restrict immoral behavior are referred to as blue laws and a bluenose is an overly puritanical person. A member of the working class is called a blue collar worker, while the classic politician is often called a blue suit. • Founded in 1987, the Blue Man Group achieves their unique look with blue grease paint over latex bald caps. The members create music with a number of unique instruments fashioned from ordinary items such as PVC pipe, flexible fiberglass rods, ball bearings, and surgical tubing. The group is also wellknown for its two-story drum wall with seven percussion stations. The musicians never speak, sing, or make any vocal sounds on stage, and do not speak to audience members after the show, signing autographs with a smudge of blue paint. • Legend has it that the white flag has represented surrender since the 15th century. During the Hundred Years War between France and England, multicolored flags became popular among European armies. When an army wished to cease hostilities, it raised a white flag. The Geneva Convention officially recognized it as such in 1949. • Surveys reveal that those who drive red cars have dynamic personalities, are high-energy, speedy, and sexier.

Worrying works!
● On July 7, 1852, according to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories, Dr. John H. Watson is born. Coincidentally, the author died on this day in England at the age of 71. His first Sherlock Holmes story, “A Study in Scarlet,” was published in Beeton’s Christmas Annual in 1887. ● On July 3, 1863, on the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s last attempt at breaking the Union line ends in disastrous failure, bringing the most decisive battle of the American Civil War to an end. Exhausted, both armies held their positions until the night of July 4, when Lee withdrew. ● On July 5, 1946, French designer Louis Reard unveils a daring two-piece swimsuit at a Paris swimming pool. A Parisian showgirl modeled the new fashion, which Reard dubbed “bikini,” inspired by a U.S. atomic test that took place off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean earlier that week.

Senior News Line by Matilda Charles
Medicare Unveils New Summary Notice Form
Medicare fraud is rampant, but because of seniors who asked questions about improper payments, more than $4.2 billion was saved last year. To continue to fight fraud and to help seniors understand the quarterly Medicare Summary Notice, a new form has been designed. To make sure the new summary you receive is actually from Medicare, start with the envelope. The return address will say Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Look for “Official Medicare Information” on the front and contact telephone numbers on the back. The changes to the form: Page 1 is a summary of your notice. It includes your name, deductible status and the status of all claims, including whether they’ve been approved. The total amount you may be billed and how many facilities (such as hospitals) submitted claims also are itemized. Page 2 offers tips on how to review the notice. There are instructions on how to check for possible fraud, how many Inpatient Hospital and Skilled Nursing Facility benefit days you’ve used, and a phone number to call. Page 3 is your Claims for Part A information, and includes where you were hospitalized, whether the claim was approved, how much Medicare paid and how much you might billed. Check the hospital dates carefully to make sure you were actually there on those dates. The final page tells how to handle denied claims or file an appeal. To file an appeal, follow the step-by-step instructions. If you need help with it, there is a phone number to call, or Medicare suggests asking for help from the facility itself or a friend or family member. Don’t miss the date it must receive the appeal. At the bottom is the address of where to send the appeal Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com.

• The following year, Dolley met and married a 43-year-old Continental Congress delegate from Virginia, James Madison. After eight years in Congress, James Madison retired from politics and the couple moved to his Virginia plantation when Dolley was 30. Madison’s withdrawal from politics was short-lived, as just four years later, his long-time friend Thomas Jefferson, newly elected as President, asked Madison to serve as Secretary of State. During the widowed Jefferson’s term of office, Dolley frequently acted as hostess for official functions at the White House. By the time her husband James was elected as President eight years later, she was well-known as a charming and elegant hostess.

• Dolley was praised for her hospitality as the President’s wife, and she soon became known as the “First Lady,” the first time this term had been used for the chief executive’s wife. Her husband’s popularity grew as a result of her many social graces. She also redecorated the White House’s public room in a grand style, suitable for entertaining diplomats. • Dolley was the first President’s wife to set the precedent for a First Lady to become involved in social issues and special projects. She led the fund-raising efforts for the “The Corps of Discovery,” better known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the exploration of the newlyacquired Louisiana Purchase. In addition, orphaned girls of Washington, D.C. found a home in a facility that Dolley helped establish. • The tradition of America’s presidential inaugural balls began when James Madison was elected to his second term. She hosted the celebration at Washington’s Long’s Hotel, with 400 tickets sold for $4 each. • During the War of 1812, the White House was set afire by British troops. Dolley further won the hearts of Americans by rescuing from destruction the historic Gilbert Stuart full-length portrait of George Washington as well as the original drafts of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. • After James Madison’s presidency, the couple returned to their Virginia plantation. Over the years, Dolley’s son Payne Todd, who had never found a career, had accumulated massive debts through gambling and alcoholism, which her husband had handled while keeping them a secret. Todd was finally sent to debtors’ prison, and Dolley had to be informed. The plantation was mortgaged to pay his debts. When James died in 1836, Dolley was faced with financial poverty from the debt. She organized her husband’s seven volumes of presidential papers, which she sold to Congress for $55,000. The plantation was the next thing to be sold to cover Todd’s debts, and Dolley moved to a small house in Washington. She frequently received hand-outs from neighbors and even from her former slaves. In 1848, she sold the remainder of Madison’s papers for $25,000. She passed away the following year at 81.

It’s a week for honoring patriots and we’ve chosen Dolley Madison, wife of the fourth U.S. President James Madison to highlight. • Raised in a conservative Quaker family, at 21, Dolley Payne married fellow Quaker John Todd, a Philadelphia lawyer. The young couple had two sons during the next three years. When a yellow fever epidemic raged across Philadelphia in 1793, Dolley lost her 29-year-old husband, three-month-old son and both in-laws, and was a widow at age 25 with another young son to support.
