by Kathy Wolfe Are you left-handed? Then August 13 is your day! In honor of Left Handers’ Day, Tidbits is studying up on data with these special folks. • It’s estimated that about 10% of the population is left-handed. But while many are considered left-handed, very few are 100% left-handed, because they perform many tasks righthanded, such as golf or batting a ball. In contrast, the percentage of “righties” who are 100% right-handed is very high. • People are left or right-handed due to an unequal distribution of motor skills, and handedness is determined by which hand is more dexterous when performing tasks. Lefties use the right side of their brains, and right-handers operate in the left hemisphere.

Infants have usually developed hand preference by six months of age. Some babies show a preference for one hand while still in the womb, which can be seen by observing which hand is predominantly held close to the mouth. Ultrasounds reveal that 90% of 16:15:10 the unborn favor their right thumb. Research suggests that premature babies and those who have experienced trauma during gestation are more likely to be left-handed. There’s also a link to mothers who are over 40 – they are 128% more likely to have a left-handed baby than a woman in her 20s.

• University studies suggest there are more lefties with an IQ over 140 than right-handed people, a list that includes Einstein, Isaac Newton, and Benjamin Franklin. A study of 100,000 students taking the SAT test revealed that 20% of the top-scoring group were lefties, twice the rate of left-handedness in the general population. • There also seems to be a connection with athletic ability. About half of fencers are left-handed. Tennis greats Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, and Rod Laver are lefties, and we can’t deny the talent of baseball southpaws Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, and Reggie Jackson.

Garage Sale

This is the time of year when so many of us clear out our house of stuff that has accumulated over time. It feels so good to get rid of it all so we can have more space that was once held captive from useless “stuff”. We do the same thing with thoughts, habits, negative attitudes, fears, time zappers, and distractions that fill our minds and hold us hostage to the junk from our past. Some of the things we need to take to the curb are feelings of insecurity, being alone, nobody caring, the need to please everyone, living in past failures, jumping to negative conclusions, feeling I will look foolish, and anything else you don’t want to pass onto your kids. Paul teaches us to, “no longer conform to the patterns of the world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12). The best garage sale we could ever have is to get rid of the old unwanted debris from our mind and replace it with a new attitude refreshing our mind.

• There is no definitive answer as to why handedness exists. Many studies have been conducted in an attempt to identify characteristics shared by left-handers. Research indicates that they have unusually good visual-spatial skills. Creativity, music, perception, emotions, and spatial awareness are controlled by the right side of the brain. This makes lefties good architects, artists, mathematicians, and musicians. Consider that Albert Einstein, Mozart, Beethoven, Leonardo da Vinci, and Henry Ford were all left-handed. Four out of the five designers of the original Macintosh computer were lefties as well.

• Left-handedness appears to be an inherited trait. Left-handed members of the British royal family include the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, and Prince William. But if both parents of a child are lefthanded, there is only a 26% chance that the child will be as well.

• Being left-handed has had negative connotations for centuries. In the 17th century, lefties were thought to be witches and warlocks, and black magic is often referred to as the “left-hand path.” But Incas believed that left-handers possessed magical abilities and could perform healing. If you receive a “left-handed compliment,” it is deemed unflattering. The Bible mentions the right hand 100 times, all in a positive light, while the left hand is mentioned 25 times, all negatively. The English language even derives the word “sinister,” which means threatening or menacing, from the Latin word sinistra, which can mean either “left” or “unlucky.” • Even folklore seems to paint lefties in a bad light. If your right palm itches, legend has it that you’ll be coming into some money, but if the left one itches, you’ll be paying money out. A twitch in your right eye means you’ll soon be seeing a friend, while a twitching left eye denotes an enemy on the way. A ringing in your right ear says someone is praising you, while a ringing left ear means someone is cursing you. Going on a trip in the near future? An itching right foot promises a pleasant journey, but if your left foot itches, the trip is going to be a bad one.

• Four out of the seven most recent U.S. Presidents have been left-handed – Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Gerald Ford. Ronald Reagan was ambidextrous, but he was not the first president with this characteristic. The 20th president, James Garfield, was not only ambidextrous, he frequently entertained his friends by writing Greek with his left hand while writing Latin with his right. • There is one community in America where everyone is left-handed. Lindale Mall lower level 365-4265 Not valid with any other offer or specials • No Purchase necessary • No cash value Cranky Hank’s owner, Keith Hazen, isn’t really cranky at all. In fact, he’s a jovial guy who prides himself on running a family-friendly restaurant. Cranky Hank’s is actually named for Hazen’s dad, a former Marine who liked yelling — and pizza. The restaurant’s slogan, “Stop your Belly Achin’,” is exactly the sort of thing the elder Hazen would say, he says, and the grumpylooking man on Cranky Hank’s signs is a caricature of the real-life Hank, who died in 1992. The restaurant, in the lower level of the Lindale Mall, is clean and bright, with an open kitchen so customers can watch pizza makers — including Hazen — toss dough and pull pies out of a large, vintage pizza oven. He even had the ceiling raised so he could toss the dough. “You will not find a scale in my kitchen,” explains Hazen. “Each pizza is an individual craft.” On Friday and Saturday evenings, pizza-makers offer dough-throwing lessons to their younger patrons. There is also kids-only karaoke on Sundays from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The pizza is “Quad Cities style,” meaning it’s the style of pizza you’ll find at Harris Pizza, Frank’s Pizzeria, Sluggers Pizza and other local spots in the Quad Cities area, says Hazen, who grew up in East Moline. It’s a little sweeter crust, a little spicier sauce and it’s also cut in strips, not wedges. The dough and sauce are both made in-house. Staff members also shred their own cheese and make their own sausage.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel ● On Aug. 13, 1878, Kate Bionda, a restaurant owner, dies of yellow fever in Memphis, Tenn., after a man who had escaped a quarantined steamboat visited her restaurant. The disease spread rapidly, and by October, 20,000 people in the Southeast had died. ● On Aug. 15, 1930, President Herbert Hoover gives a press conference in which he offers plans for relief of individuals and businesses affected by a series of devastating droughts. Though criticized later for not doing enough overall, he asked the War Department to provide artillery-range land to Montana cattle and sheep farmers for grazing. ● On Aug. 18, 1941, Adolf Hitler orders that the systematic murder of the mentally ill and handicapped be brought to an end because of protests within Germany. But 50,000 people had already fallen victim to it. It would be revived in occupied Poland.

A-1 Home Healthcare Proudly Presents

Senior News Line by Matilda Charles

Find Your Village

Do you have a built-in microwave above the stove that’s hard to reach? Or small area rugs that aren’t taped down? Are there parts of your home that are a bit dark? Are there times you can’t get to the drugstore to pick up a prescription? In many parts of the country, “villages” are cropping up. A village is a volunteer effort that allows seniors to ask for specific changes to their homes to allow them to continue to live there. That work is done at a discount by local businesses that have been screened. Often village volunteers will do smaller household tasks, such as watering the garden or downloading a program on the senior’s computer. Or maybe a senior needs a ride to the doctor or to take the cat to the vet. Sometimes the service is as simple as having someone accompany you to an event you’d like to attend. Seniors pay an annual fee to be connected to the available services, which can vary depending on the particular village. Some will include a visit by a healthcare professional to assess any safety fixes needed in the home. What they all have in common is the ability to help seniors stay at home longer. At this point, there are more than a hundred villages across the country. If you’d like to know more about it, go online to the Village to Village Network at www.vtvnetwork.org. Be sure to check the Village Map to locate a network in your area. Click on the colored icons for a popup with contact information. Some of the villages are not in the VtoV Network and operate independently. Or call the main office at (617) 299-9NET. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. In keeping with this week’s left-handed theme, here are facts about some famous left-handed ladies who’ve made their mark in history. • In 1954, this lovely Swedish-born actress was named “the most beautiful woman that ever lived.” Born Greta Gustafson, she achieved Hollywood fame under the name of Greta Garbo. Between 1922 and 1941, Garbo starred in 28 films, receiving four Best Actress Oscar nominations. During the 1930s, she was one of the highest-paid women in America. Yet at age 35, she walked away from the fame and retired to a very private life, avoiding all publicity. Garbo is frequently linked with the phrase “I vant to be alone,” one of her lines from the 1932 movie Grand Hotel. And so it seemed, since she made no public appearances and lived alone quietly in Manhattan, never marrying, until her death at age 85. • Another left-handed American actress, Betty Grable, made her acting debut at the age of 12 in a 1929 film. At age 30 she was the highest-paid woman in the country, earning $300,000 a year. Grable was 20th Century Fox’s top money-maker and the most popular box office draw in the country, and made more than 60 films over the course of her career. Famous as having “the most beautiful legs in Hollywood,” her legs were insured by the studio with Lloyds of London for $1 million. She was quoted as saying, “There are two reasons why I am successful in show business and I am standing on both of them.” Her famous bathing suit poster during World War II is included in LIFE magazine’s list of “100 Photos that Changed the World.” • England’s Queen Victoria had the longest reign of any British monarch, 63 years and seven months. (Her left-handed great-greatgranddaughter Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne over 61 years.) When Victoria was born in 1819, she was fifth in line of succession behind her father and his three brothers. Her father died while she was an infant, and following the death of her three uncles who had left no heirs, Victoria ascended the throne at age 18. She married her first cousin, Prince Albert at age 21 and the pair had nine children and 42 grandchildren. Her children were linked with so many European royal families, Victoria was nicknamed “the grandmother of Europe.” After 21 years of marriage, Albert was struck down with typhoid fever and died at age 42. Victoria sank into despair and never overcame her grief, wearing black for the remainder of her life. She was the first British monarch to live in Buckingham Palace and the first to ride a train. Victoria survived eight assassination attempts on her life during her reign. A devoted writer, she filled 122 journals during her adult life. • Leftie Olympic figure skater Dorothy Hamill got her start taking once-a-week group lessons at age 8. Over the next several years, Dorothy’s father spent close to $20,000 a year on the expenses involved in training an Olympic medalist. Dorothy nabbed the gold medal at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, and instantly became “America’s Sweetheart,” setting a new fashion trend with her bobbed hairstyle. She is also credited with the invention of a figure skating move that became known as the “Hamill Camel,” a camel spin that turns into a sit spin.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver

● It was George Bernard Shaw who made the following observation: “The longer I live the more I see that I am never wrong about anything, and that all the pains that I have so humbly taken to verify my notions have only wasted my time.” ● Modern dietary trends notwithstanding, raw vegetables have not always enjoyed the healthsome reputation they now have. In medieval times, in fact, veggies would always be cooked; raw ones were considered to be bad for the humors. ● Those who keep track of such things say that the Rolling Stones’ song “Satisfaction” is played on the radio in the U.S. more than 300 times every day. ● One of the most notorious magic tricks performed by professionals is catching a bullet in the mouth. It’s said to be cursed, due to the fact that, over the past 400 or so years, at least 15 magicians have died in the attempt. Some of them mistakenly used live rounds instead of blanks, and one jealous wife swapped out the blanks for live rounds. One of the earliest attempters of the trick was beaten to death by a mob who believed he was in league with the devil. Cursed, though? If someone is trying to catch a bullet in the mouth, it hardly requires a curse to result in a violent end. ● Portland, Ore., could just as easily have been named Boston, Oregon. The two men who named the town couldn’t decide which city back east should be the namesake, so they flipped a coin. Portland came up the winner. ● Originally, the best man was supposed to serve as a sort of armed guard, in case the bride needed to be kidnapped from her disapproving parents. *** Thought for the Day: “Every American carries in his bloodstream the heritage of the malcontent and the dreamer.” -Dorothy Fuldheim (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Patching Damaged Hardwood Floor

Q: You recently published instructions on lifting out small dents from hardwood floors and furniture. My question is, how do you deal with larger damage, like gouges and small holes? -- Chet in NYC A: As long as the wood isn’t severely damaged, such as a cracked or broken board, and just has a few gouges, small holes or large dents that won’t steam out, you can patch and smooth the damaged areas. For this job you’ll need fine-grit sandpaper, wood putty or wood patching compound, a putty knife and wood restorer. You also might need a hammer and a nail set (a large nail-like tool, not a bunch of nails) to tap loose nails down below the wood surface, should they need it. Clear debris and dirt away from the areas to be repaired. Check the wood for splinters or other damage, and look for nail or screw heads poking up. Use a nail set and hammer to tap the nails down below the surface. If a nail won’t go or stay down, or if it sits loosely, remove it and hammer a fresh nail into the wood about a half-inch down the board edge from the old nail hole. Add that nail hole to your patch list. Using a putty knife, fill the gouged areas, small holes and the newly created holes where you tapped down errant nails with patching compound or wood putty. Work on one spot at a time, using the putty knife to force the compound into the spot and pressing the blade down until it lies flat on the floorboard. Scrape away excess compound from the edges, feathering outward. Let the patched areas dry completely, usually at least a day. Once dry, sand each patch with fine-grit sandpaper until the compound is flush with the board surface. Sweep away the sanding debris and wipe the area with a damp, not wet, cloth. Finally, apply wood restorer to each patched area, working one at a time, until the patch blends in with the rest of the floor. HOME TIP: Hardwood floors need only sweeping, vacuuming and an occasional damp mop to clean them. For more thorough cleaning and conditioning, look for a hardwood floor cleaning solution. ● Here’s a great way to get your lawn tools organized and off the floor: If you have any PVC pipe, cut some 4- or 5-inch sections and screw them into the wall, vertically, a foot or two from the floor in your garage. Slip the handle of your rake, garden hoe, broom, etc. down into the pipe, and it will stay stable against the wall. Make sure the pipe is wide enough for the handle. ● There are lots of shop, lawn and garden fluids that are not allowed in the trash.
