by Janet Spencer Each square inch of skin contains about 20 blood vessels, 650 sweat glands, 100 oil glands, 65 hairs, and 1,300 nerve endings. Come along with Tidbits as we appreciate the skin! THE BASIC FACTS

K ELLE Y

• The skin is the largest organ in the body and accounts for 15 to 20 percent of body weight. The skin serves four purposes: to protect the body from injury and invasion; to sense the surrounding environment; to regulate metabolism by storing fat and controlling salt and water content through perspiration; and to control temperature. • The skin is a very efficient temperature control device. When you are hot, blood flow to your skin increases and you start sweating. As your sweat evaporates, it cools the blood in your skin. When you’re too cold, the opposite happens: blood flow to the skin is reduced so that it won’t contact the cold air and lose heat. Sometimes the skin sacrifices itself through frostbite in order to keep your blood warm. 16:15:10

Of Linn County

• Cells in muscles and nerves never die. On the other hand, cells in the skin and the gut live only 18 hours before dying. White blood cells live for two weeks; red blood cells for one month; and liver cells two months.

THE WHYS and WHEREFORES

• Researchers theorize that one of the reasons humans walk upright instead of on all fours is because it is cooler. Walking upright reduces contact with the hot desert floor, exposes less skin to direct sunlight, and allows air to circulate more freely around the body. Humans don’t have hairy fur because on the African savanna, heat retention was not necessary. The loss of heavy fur reduced the need for water in a desert climate. • Vitamin D acts as a catalyst, producing proteins that allow minerals such as calcium to move through the intestinal membrane and into the cells. Vitamin D cannot be formed unless it is activated by ultraviolet light. Sunlight does not contain vitamin D; it only activates it. Cats and dogs, when they lick their fur, ingest body fat that has been irradiated on their fur. This serves as a source of vitamin D. Black skin acts as protection against sunburn and skin cancer, while white skin allows enough ultraviolet light to pass through the skin in cold climates where people wear heavy clothing most of the year and their exposure to sunlight is limited. • Oriental people have an extra flap of skin on their eyelids which gives them a slant-eyed appearance. Why? Anthropologists theorize that it protects against cold and glare, helping them cope with bitter, cold winters. Their noses are flat to minimize exposure and reduce risk of frostbite. Their nostrils are narrow, which helps warm up cold air. Their faces have an extra layer of fat to act as insulation, and a layer of fat on the eyelids also acts as a barrier to the cold.

Tools 4 life By DR. Jim coyle

Managing the Pressure Cooker Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. No matter how long you continue to boil, it always stays the same temperature. As the water evaporates and becomes steam it is also the same temperature, 212 degrees. The only way to make the steam and water hotter is to put them under pressure. If we fit an absolutely tight cover to the pan so no steam can escape while we continue to add heat, both the pressure and temperature inside the vessel will rise. If a pressure cooker’s pressure relief valve fails to release the built up pressure within the cooker an explosion will happen causing serious damage. So it becomes important in cooking, and in life, that we understand how to manage the pressure that builds up on the inside. Life’s pressures without a release valve will lead to dangerous explosions. Here are 3 components to help release life’s pressure; 1) SPEAK WITH INTEGRITY, 2) LIVE WITH GODLINESS, 3) WALK IN HUMILITY.

MADE IN THE SHADE

When a friend of Harvey Schakowsky developed skin cancer, Schakowsky was alarmed. He learned that one way to prevent skin cancer is by wearing protective clothing. “What IS protective clothing?” he asked. Nobody knew. So he decided to look into it. Testing different fibers, he found that a typical cotton T-shirt will block only 50 percent of harmful rays from the sun. After some experimenting, he developed a fabric that blocks 99 percent of ultraviolet B radiation and 93 percent of ultraviolet A rays. It’s made of a synthetically woven nylon which is treated with a patented chemical substance. Schakowsky is marketing the line as Solarweave, selling hats, jackets, and shirts. He would like to see all sports players wearing his weave. He’s also pushing for all clothing to be labeled telling consumers what protection, if any, it offers.

HAND FACTS

• No one know for sure why the skin gets all wrinkled when it’s wet for long periods of time. However, researchers have noted that when the nerves that supply feeling to a patch of skin is cut, that patch of skin becomes permanently numb-- and it also ceases to become wrinkled when it is wet. It also loses its ability to sweat. Scientists now theorize that wrinkled skin allows for a better grip in wet situations. Hunter-gatherers operating in wet environments would find this advantageous. • There are no muscles in your fingers. Your fingers are controlled by muscles and tendons in your palm, wrist, and forearm. • The wrinkles on the backs of the knuckles of your fingers are the places where the skin is attached to the tendons that move the fingers. (This prevents the skin from moving around like a rubber glove when hands are used for gripping and twisting.) If for some reason the finger joints cease moving, the wrinkles disappear. • The skin on the palm of your hand is unable to tan.

If skin is severely damaged then it may try to heal by forming scar tissue. Scar tissue is not the same as normal skin tissue, it often appears discolored and lacks sweat glands and hair.

THE DIMPLE DEVICE

Patent #560,351 was issued in 1896. It was a device for producing dimples. The rig resembled a hand drill and it was used to “massage the cellular tissues surrounding the spot where the dimple is to be produced.” All one needed to do was merely to put the “knob C of the arm A on the selected spot on the body, the extension D, together with the cylinder F, put in position, then while holding the knob N with one hand the brace ‘I’ must be made to revolve on the axis X. The cylinder F serves to make the skin surrounding the spot malleable.” This contraption was also handy for “nurturing and maintaining dimples already existing” in case you were worried about them disappearing.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel ● On Aug. 22, 1776, the British arrive at Long Island -- between Gravesend and New Utrecht -- with 24,000 men, and on Sept. 15 captured New York City. It would remain in British hands until the end of the war. ● On Aug. 20, 1862, New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley publishes a blistering editorial, “The Prayer of Twenty Millions,” calling on President Abraham Lincoln to declare emancipation for all slaves. Unbeknownst to Greeley, Lincoln was already moving in the direction of emancipation. ● On Aug. 24, 1873, William Henry Jackson becomes the first person to photograph Colorado’s elusive Mount of the Holy Cross, providing reliable proof of its existence. Two deep snow-filled ravines at 90-angles form a large cross on the steep northeast face of a 14,000-foot mountain peak.

Senior News Line by Matilda Charles

Fighting Scammers

Three-hundred million dollars a year. That’s how much money seniors lose in one scam alone, the Jamaican lottery scam. The average loss is between $60,000 and $70,000 per victim. Even worse is that when scams are reported, nothing much is done, at least on the federal level. Any efforts have been scattered and ineffective. Now two U.S. senators have put forth legislation designed to help. Susan Collins of Maine and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota have introduced The Seniors Fraud Protection Act. Its purpose is threefold: educating seniors and their families about fraud schemes, improving the complaint system for victims of scams, and enhancing the monitoring of such schemes. The Federal Trade Commission would be directed to monitor and investigate possible scams and to create a special seniors website for information and complaints. Best of all, those complaints would no longer be ignored. The information would be made available to law enforcement. While there are too many scams targeting the elderly, the Jamaica lottery scam is particularly nasty. If the scammers don’t get immediate cooperation from the victim, they employ high-tech threat tools such as Internet satellite streetview pictures of the victim’s home. Even if the victim does pay (the worst possible thing to do), they come after more money, threatening to burn down the house. They can look up the victim in online databases and learn the name of relatives. Your best bet to fight these scammers is to protect yourself: --Use your caller ID and don’t answer calls from the 876 area code. --If the “prize” sounds too good to be true, it is. --Never wire funds to anyone you don’t know. --If someone wants you to pay fees or “taxes” in advance to collect a prize, don’t. --Allow yourself to BE RUDE. Hang up on anyone suspicious. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com.

EMMA EDMONDS

August 20th 2013

December 22– January 19 You’ve got a take-charge personality, and an authority will look to you to use it on an upcoming project. Do not disappoint them, Capricorn.

January 20– February 18

Your appetite for information is insatiable. Lucky for you, Aquarius, a coworker whets it considerably. A mission in organization starts with a bang & ends with a whimper.

February 19– March 20

Tiny steps now will lead to big strides later, Pisces, so move with care. Approach the project as a process and learn to delegate at each phase.

March 21– April 19

Humility is key to settling a family feud. There is no room at the table for arrogance, so squelch it every chance you get, Aries. A meeting provides finality.

April 20– May 20

Prayers are answered, and life looks rosier than it has in some time. Bask in the moment, Taurus, and take a leap forward. A friend keeps a promise.

May 21– June 21 Whispers are just that— whispers. The truth will come out by week’s end. Give it some time to settle in, Gemini. A phone message is returned.

June 22– July 22

A new face is a deadringer for someone from your past. Don’t be fooled, Cancer. There is no comparison between the two, as you will soon discover.

July 23– August 22 Lucky Leo. You’ve got the magic touch, and the world knows it. Soon you’ll have more on your plate than you have time for. Take help where you can get it.

August 23– September 22 Lots of love is ontap this week, Virgo. You’re the hit of the party everywhere you go. A face off at home inspires you to make a few changes.

September 23– October 22

Triumph over tragedy, Libra. Every cloud has a silver lining, even the one hanging over you. You will soon find the good in it and turn it around.

October 23– November 21

You’re tested this week, and you pass with flying colors. Share your insight with a friend who’s stumbling, Scorpio. A party invite arrives by mail.

November 22– December 21

She wanted to cross the border into the U.S so she dressed as a man and changed her name to Franklin Thompson. The disguise was so successful that she ended up enlisting in the Union army at the start of the Civil War, retaining the alias Franklin Thompson. • She was an excellent soldier and served in many capacities. She worked as a mail carrier, nursing attendant, orderly, and stretcher bearer. She stood with her regiment at Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Manassas. But her greatest contribution was as a spy. • She had many disguises. Once she disguised herself as an Irish peddler woman, claiming she was selling apples and soap to the soldiers. This afforded her access to the Confederate camps, where she chatted with her customers and gathered intelligence about upcoming campaigns. Another time she dyed her hair and skin black using berries, soot, and silver nitrate and got a job as a black laundress in a Confederate camp. She just happened to be standing next to a Confederate officer when a packet of important papers fell out of his pocket unnoticed, and she safely delivered the valuable information to her Union superiors.

• One of her most successful episodes of espionage came when she again disguised herself as a male slave by dying her skin. The Confederates put her to work on the fortifications at Yorktown, Virginia. She worked hard and made many sketches of the fortifications which were then smuggled to Union headquarters. The information she gave greatly assisted General McClellan in capturing the town.

• Her escapades ended when she contracted malaria in 1863 and requested a furlough, which was denied. Not wanting to seek medical attention from the army for fear of discovery, she left her comrades in mid-April, never to return. “Franklin Thompson” was subsequently charged with desertion. • When she recovered from the malaria, she wanted to return to the army, but was afraid to do so after seeing “WANTED” posters listing Franklin Thompson as a deserter. Instead, she dropped her male disguise and went to work as a nurse. • She wrote and published her memoirs, Nurse and Spy in the Union Army, the first edition being released in 1864. It sold well, to the tune of 175,000 copies. Edmonds donated the profits from her book to various soldiers’ aid groups. She subsequently married and had three children. • In 1876, she attended a reunion of the 2nd Michigan and was warmly received by her surprised comrades. They joined with her in petitioning the government to have the charge of desertion removed from her military records, and supported her application for a military pension. After an eight year battle and an Act of Congress, “Franklin Thompson” was cleared of desertion charges and awarded a pension of $12 per month in 1884. • In 1897, Edmonds was admitted into the Grand Army of the Republic, the only woman member of this organization of Union Civil War vets. One year later, on September 5, 1898, Emma Edmonds died at her home in La Porte, Texas. In 1901, she was re-buried with military honors at Washington Cemetery in Houston.

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta

An Exhausting Proposition

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver

● It was noted wit, playwright, essayist and poet Oscar Wilde who made the following sage observation: “A thing is not necessarily true because a man dies for it.” ● If you’re heading to the state of Washington with mischief on your mind, you’ll need to keep in mind this state law: “A motorist with criminal intentions (must) stop at the city limits and telephone the chief of police as he (or she) is entering the town.” I’ll bet that one has been really effective in stopping crime. ● You might be surprised to learn that only 3 percent of all mammal species actually mate for life. ● If you’re an average person having an average dream, it will last about 20 minutes. ● It was Irishman Cedric Gibbons who designed the Oscar statuette given to the recipients of the annual Academy Awards. Interestingly, Gibbons moved to Hollywood and worked for MGM as an art director and set designer, and his work earned him 11 of the Oscars that he himself designed. ● Those who study such things say that bats always turn to the left when exiting a cave. ● You probably think you know that bears love honey -- after all, popular culture is full of images of bears going after a hive. The bears do, in fact, eat the honey, but they’re really after the bees, their pupae and their larvae. ● There are more than 2,000 species of plants that contain some form of cyanide. ● If you are a logophile, you might know that the word “obstreperous” means “noisy and difficult to control.” You probably don’t realize, though, that the noun most likely to follow the word “obstreperous” is “teenager.” But I doubt you’ll be surprised. *** Thought for the Day: “Some editors are failed writers, but so are most writers.” -- T.S. Eliot (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: When I get out of the shower, the bathroom is completely fogged up, even when the exhaust fan is running. What’s the point of having a bathroom exhaust fan if it doesn’t clear the air? -- Kurt C., Huntsville, Ala. A: Good question. If a bathroom exhaust fan doesn’t do the job it’s advertised to do, what’s the point of having one? The exhaust fan serves a good purpose. It draws moist air out of the bathroom, minimizing damage to wallpaper, baseboards, the ceiling and anything else that isn’t sealed against water. However, if a “fog” lingers for more than five minutes after a shower, the fan isn’t doing its job. The problem could be a blocked exhaust duct, an ailing fan motor or a unit that’s not large enough to clear the entire room. In every case, the unit is not pulling enough air out of the bathroom. An exhaust fan should remove as many cubic feet of air each minute as the number of square feet of the bathroom’s floor space. Clean dust and debris from the unit and air ducts. If cleaning the unit doesn’t help, consider replacing it. Switch off the unit at the circuit box, then remove the front grille. Use a circuit tester to make sure no power is coming through the wires attached to the fan motor. Do this by placing one probe of the tester against each connector, then placing the second probe against the grounding screw on the fan housing. Don’t touch the bare wires with your fingers. If the tester glows at any point, go back to the circuit box and turn off the correct switch. Remove the mounting screws and pull the fan out of the wall or ceiling cavity. Disconnect the vent hose and household wiring to free the unit, then set it aside. Next, measure the fan’s wall or ceiling cavity and record it. Measure the square footage of the bathroom, as well. Take those figures and the fan assembly to the home-improvement store and purchase a fan that works best for the room’s square footage. Make sure the new fan’s exhaust port matches the size of the old exhaust port. Install the new fan in the old cavity, if possible (a larger unit may require you to increase the size of the cavity). Attach the fan housing to the stud or joist, avoiding the nail holes of the old unit. Test the household wiring to make sure the power is off before attempting to connect them to the new unit. Then, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to hook up the wires. Connect the vent hose to the new unit’s exhaust port, replace the grille cover and switch on the power at the circuit box. HOME TIP Use caution when working with electrical products. Use a circuit tester to make sure the power is completely off, and don’t touch bare wiring with your fingers!
