TIDBITS® SAYS…

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE

by Kathy Wolfe This week, in commemoration of National Dog Week, Tidbits is going to the dogs! Let’s look at some unusual breeds and random facts about “man’s best friend.” • We’ve been celebrating National Dog Week since 1928 when Captain Will Judy, a noted dog judge, founded the week of tribute. Judy, a decorated World War I veteran, left behind a law practice to establish his own publishing house in order to publish his war diary, essays, and reference books about his life’s passion, dogs. He authored The Dog Encyclopedia and other works about breeding, training, and show dogs, as well as publishing Dog World magazine. • It’s believed that the oldest domesticated dog breed is the Saluki, which has its origins in ancient Egypt around 330 B.C. They were kept as royal pets and mummified after death and buried alongside Pharaohs. They are still used as hunting dogs by the nobles in the Middle East. • What are folks naming their dogs these days? The most popular names for males dogs are Max, Buddy, and Rocky, while the top choices for female dogs are Bella, Molly, and Lucy. Other favorites are Jake, Charlie, Maggie, and Daisy. turn the page for more!

• Ever wonder where the term “man’s best friend” originated? U.S. Senator George Graham Vest was a small-town Missouri lawyer in 1870 when he was hired to represent a farmer suing a man for killing his best hunting dog, Old Drum. Vest offered a heart-warming and poignant closing argument to the jury, one so powerful it brought tears to the eyes of the jurors. In part, Vest declared, “The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful… the one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.” In 1948, the community of Warrenburg, Missouri, had the “Tribute to the American Dog” speech inscribed on a bronze statue of Vest and Old Drum. Historians consider it one of the world’s great speeches. • Since 1905, the American Kennel Club has compiled statistics on what our favorite breeds are. For 30 years, the Boston terrier ranked in either first or second place. When German Shepherd Rin-Tin-Tin gained popularity in silent films, that breed took over the lead as most popular. The original Rin-TinTin was rescued from a World War I battlefield by an American soldier who brought him back to the U.S., where the canine appeared in 27 Hollywood films. • Cocker spaniels became the most popular breed in 1936 and held the honor for the next 16 years, when the Beagle gained the title. In 1960, poodles were the top dog and reigned for a record 22 years. Since 1991, the Labrador Retriever has been in first place, followed by German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers. The Lab is highly trainable and is frequently used for search and rescue purposes, as guide dogs for the blind, and on narcotics detection teams. DanDea Enterprises, Inc. Coggon, IA

TOOLS 4 LIFE BY DR. JIM COYLE PREPARING FOR BATTLE The war is on. It is a battle for the minds, hearts, and hands of people - between the forces of good and evil, between God and Satan. The male species of the Alaskan Bull Moose battle for dominance during the fall breeding season, literally going head-to-head with antlers crunching together as they collide. Often the antlers, their only weapon, are broken. The heftiest moose, with the largest and strongest antlers, triumphs. Therefore, the battle fought in the fall is really won during the summer, when the moose eat continually. The one that consumes the best diet for growing antlers and gaining weight will be the heavyweight in the fight. Those that eat inadequately have weaker antlers and less bulk. Spiritual battles await as Satan roams and seeks to destroy. Will we be victorious, or will we fall? So much depends on what we do now. The bull-moose principle: Enduring faith, strength, and wisdom for trials are best developed before they’re needed. We don’t fight for the victory; we fight from the victory that Jesus gave us. The next few weeks I will be covering the spiritual armor that is necessary to walk in victory.

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE (continued):

• It’s no surprise that the Chihuahua is the smallest breed. This breed’s owners can expect their dog to weigh under 6 pounds and measure between 6 and 9 inches tall and live between 10 and 18 years. The record holder of the title of world’s smallest dog is Milly, a Chihuahua living in Puerto Rico. She stands just 3.8 inches tall and weighs about a pound. Milly’s birth weight was less than an ounce and she fit nicely in a teaspoon.

• For city folks and apartment dwellers, small dogs are the most popular, with the Yorkshire terrier leading the pack, followed by the poodle, dachshund, and Shih Tzu. The Shih Tzu originated in China, and was once the prized pet of that country’s royalty during the Ming Dynasty. It weighs between 11 and 16 lbs. and stands about 10.5 inches tall.

• Although the collie has never made it to the Number One spot in popularity, its status took a huge leap during the 1940s after the release of the hit film Lassie Come Home, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Roddy McDowall. It maintained the rank of third for several years, aided by the long-running Lassie television series. The collie now places 35th. Likewise, the 1962 movie Big Red about an Irish setter vaulted that breed into 3rd place for a time, but it now ranks #72.

• Close behind the Chihuahua in size is the Affenpinscher, a German breed belonging to the Pinscher-Schnauzer family, dating back to the 17th century. Its unusual name is the result of its odd monkey-like facial expression. In the German language, Affen means “monkey,” and the breed has earned the nickname “monkey dog.” It weighs between 7 and 9 lbs. and stands less than a foot tall.

● On Oct. 4, 1937, legendary blues singer Bessie Smith is buried near Philadelphia. Smith was killed a few days earlier when the old Packard she was driving hit a parked truck near Coahoma, Mississippi. In 1923, Smith had released her first record, “Down-Hearted Blues.” ● On Sept. 29, 1954, Willie Mays, centerfielder for the New York Giants, makes an amazing over-the-shoulder catch of a fly ball hit by Cleveland Indians first baseman Vic Wertz to rob Wertz of extra bases in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series. The catch has gone down as one of the greatest in baseball history. ● On Oct. 1, 1962, Johnny Carson takes over from Jack Paar as host of the late-night talk program “The Tonight Show.” Carson went on to host “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” for three decades, handing over the reins to Jay Leno in 1992.

• Although the largest dog breed, the Great Dane, usually average about 160 lbs. in weight and 32 inches in height, a Michigan Great Dane named Zeus, history’s tallest dog, measures 44 inches tall and 7’ 4” tall standing on his hind legs. Zeus weighs in at 150 lbs. • If you’re looking for a quiet dog, there are several breeds that will fit the bill. A survey of 218 veterinarians tells us that, although very large in size, both the Newfoundland and the Great Dane don’t bark often. Of course, when they do, their barks are louder and deeper than any other dogs. Both of these breeds are calm and docile. The sleek greyhound is also a quiet dog, but its owner will have the dog’s strong will and defiance to deal with instead. • So which dogs are the smartest? A panel of 122 vets were surveyed and their consensus was that the Golden Retriever is the fifth-smartest, followed by the Australian Shepherd in fourth place, the poodle in third, and the German Shepherd second. The majority ranked the Border Collie as the smartest breed. • About 4.5 million people in the U.S. will be bitten by a dog this year. Nearly 850,000 of those will have to receive medical attention. Out of that number, more than 30,000 will have to undergo some type of reconstructive surgery, while 15 to 20 victims of dog bites will die this year. •Lots of people will probably agree with the statement by author Mark Twain, “The more I know about people, the more I like my dog.”

● On Oct. 3, 1981, a hunger strike by Irish nationalists at the Maze Prison in Belfast in Northern Ireland is called off after seven months and 10 deaths. In the aftermath of the strike, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher agreed to give in to several of the protesters’ demands, including the right to wear civilian clothing.

FAMOUS CANADIANS:

RACHEL McADAMS

• The beautiful and talented actress Rachel McAdams hails from Ontario, growing up in the community of St. Thomas, raised by her nurse mother and truck driver father. She was a performer from an early age, but not in the acting arena. At age four, Rachel started figure skating and by age nine, was urged to move to Toronto to train as a pairs skater, an opportunity she turned down. As she tells it, “Getting up at 5:00 AM was a constant struggle. I used to get so nervous before competitions, I’d wake up in a cold sweat.” She still managed to endure competition until she was 18 when she hung up her skates to pursue an acting career. • Rachel entered Toronto’s York University, graduating from their theater program four years later. She landed some roles in Canadian television and films, receiving a Genie Award nomination (the Canadian equivalent of the Oscar) before moving on to Hollywood films. • The 2002 comedy The Hot Chick was the actress’ first U.S. film, but it was the 2004 popular teen movie Mean Girls that brought her notoriety, earning her two MTV Movie Awards. It was closely followed by The Notebook, which brought another MTV Award and cemented her box office star status. • After a series of successful films, Rachel took a well-deserved sabbatical, returning to Canada where she could, in her words, be “able to come home to a place where no one really cares what you do or who you are, and allow me a break from that life.” She did miss out on a few prize roles, such as the bond girl in Casino Royale and opposite Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible III. • McAdams returned to the big screen in 2008 and picked up her stardom where she had left off with The Time Traveler’s Wife, Morning Glory, Midnight in Paris, and Sherlock Holmes. • McAdams has always carefully prepared herself for her roles. To accurately portray a wealthy Southern belle in The Notebook, she enrolled in etiquette classes and spent time in Charleston, South Carolina to train herself in the accent. For the role of a wealthy socialite in 2005’s Wedding Crashers, McAdams took instruction for her sailing certification to properly play in a boating scene. When starring in The Lucky Ones, a story about Iraq War soldiers home on leave, she trained at the U.S. Army boot camp at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. • During her free time, McAdams is committed to helping others. Following Hurricane Katrina, she aided in the clean-up efforts. She volunteers for Habitat for Humanity in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada’s Alzheimer’s Association, the READ Campaign, and the United Way. A devoted environmentalist, she can be seen riding her bicycle around Toronto, and heats her home with renewable energy. • Although she has a U.S. green card, McAdams retains her Canadian citizenship and chooses to live in Toronto, where she putters in her garden. Cooking is her passion and she claims that she would love to open a restaurant if she weren’t an actress. “Truthfully,” she says, “I never really wanted to be a big movie star. I never even wanted to work outside of Canada, or outside of the theater.”

December 22– January 19 The conflict continues for a beloved couple. Be there for them, but do not offer any ad-vice. This is a problem for the pros, Capricorn. A promise is made.

June 22– July 22 The need for a purchase becomes clear. Do your homework, Cancer. A challenge is presented. Take it only if you dare. A friend returns a favor.

January 20– February 18 Opportunity knocks yet again. This is your chance, Aquarius. A sequence of events at work gets a conversation started. A message is delivered.

July 23– August 22

February 19– March 20 Pace yourself, Pisces. There is a lot to do this week, but you have more than enough time to get it done. A crass comment is no reason to get upset.

March 21– April 19 Progress is lagging. It may be time to turn up the heat, Aries. A renovation begins at home. Prepare for chaos for some time to come.

The stakes are high, maybe a little too high, Leo. There is no shame in bowing out. Vaca-tion plans continue to change. Be patient. It will all come together soon.

August 23– September 22 Whew, Virgo. The pressure eases with better technology and a larger team. An old foe drops by bearing gifts. Welcome them with caution.

September 23– October 22 Dribble, dribble, dribble. Relax, Libra. Things are getting done, just not at the pace you would like. A loved one has an interesting proposal. Hear them out.

April 20– May 20 Be careful, Taurus. What appears to be a travesty of justice may in fact not be. A health issue is resolved with a change in treatment.

October 23– November 21 No more, Scorpio. You’ve balked at an idea long enough. Join in the effort, even if your heart is not in it. You will learn more than you imagined.

May 21– June 21 It’s all about the numbers this week, Gemini. Keep track of your expenditures. There could be ways to save. A special occasion draws near.

November 22– December 21

Stranger things have happened, Sagittarius. Continue to hope and pray, and you might just get your wish. A review points you in a different direction.

A Computer Tablet Made for Seniors If you’re still wary of using computer technology because of the complications, or if you use the computer at the library because the cost keeps you from having your own, AARP has good news for you -- the RealPad tablet, specifically designed for seniors. Here are a few things that make the RealPad good for hesitant seniors: There’s an intuitive interface to help you send email and photos, browse the Internet and even have video chats. It comes already loaded with apps (applications, or programs) and tutorial videos on how to use the touch screen, browse the Internet and set up a video call or email. The RealQuick Fix feature has one button that helps you view the status of your tablet and identify what might be wrong (for example, if your WiFi goes out) and fix it with one click. Customer service is 24/7 -- and free. Call the toll-free number, and you’ll get help with any questions. The price is $189, and it includes a year membership in AARP (or a year extension on a current membership), plus a one-year limited warranty on the tablet. Here are some of the things that stand out on the list of specifications: ● powered by an Intel Atom processor, which means it’s fast. ● a 7.85-inch touch screen ● WiFi (You’ll need WiFi in your home, or use a free one in stores, libraries and many other places.) ● front- and rear-facing cameras (front for your video chats and rear for your own photos) ● 16 gigabytes of storage ● built-in speakers RealPad was available to pre-order early in September, and it will be in Walmart stores in mid-October. To see the RealPad, go online to www. aarprealpad.org. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver

● It was French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte who made the following sage observation: “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.” ● Given the notoriety Las Vegas enjoys as a place for quick weddings, you might be surprised to learn that, technically, it is illegal in that city for a mustachioed man to kiss a woman. ● In his spare time, Jim Cummings, a successful voice actor, calls sick children in hospital wards and talks to them as some of his most famous characters, including Winnie the Pooh and Tigger. ● Those who study such things say that even fish can have distinct personalities. Within a single species, scientists have observed that some fish are quite adventurous, willing to go to great lengths to obtain food or a mate, while others are much more timid, eschewing daring feats altogether. ● Some state names have come to the English language through roundabout routes. Take Alaska, for example. The state name comes from the Aleut word “alaxsxaq,” which in turn comes from the Russian meaning “the object toward which the action of the sea is directed.” (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: Can I clean my own chimney? I don’t want to spend tons of money and be told I have to make expensive repairs just to use the fireplace. -- Rich C. in Portland, Maine A: Your reluctance is understandable, because the chimney cleaning industry, like other contractor services, has suffered in recent years from scams. Unscrupulous scammers often target new homeowners or seniors, advertising unbelievably low prices for a chimney cleaning. They then sock the homeowner, after a cursory (or even no) inspection of their chimney, with a huge cleaning and repair bill. Still, if you want to safely use your fireplace, an annual cleaning and inspection is extremely important. Contact more than one chimney cleaning service (three or more if possible) and get a price quote. Don’t agree to any work until you’ve seen estimates from a few services. Don’t be pressured into a sale you’re not ready for. Your home’s furnace is another item that should get a checkup from a heating professional. Again, if the contractor inspecting your furnace says repair work needs to be done, get multiple estimates before agreeing to anything. Those concerns aside, you can do some basic inspection and maintenance tasks yourself. These don’t replace the contractor, but help you get familiar with your house’s heating systems. You can visually inspect the firebox and damper, and check the bottom part of the chimney flue. Open the damper and use a flashlight to look up the flue, checking for debris like leaves or nests, as well as creosote buildup. This black, sticky gunk is extremly flammable and is one of the things professional sweeps take care of. It’s also difficult to remove without the right equipment. Clean the damper and firebox by removing ashes and unburnt wood (when they’re fully cooled) and brushing ashes and residue from the visible parts of the fireplace. Get ready to turn on the heating system now, as well. Buy replacement filters and schedule the furnace’s annual inspection. Clean dust and debris from the registers and the air intake cover. HOME TIP: To improve a furnace’s heating efficiency, consider adding insulation to heating ducts. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

● “Use fluoride toothpaste on a facial blemish for overnight relief. Just dab a tiny bit of your regular toothpaste on a pimple, and cover with a bandage. It should relieve redness and swelling. If you have very sensitive skin, don’t try this trick, as it can make it worse.” -- B.B. in Tennessee ● If you have wood floors, you might already know about felt furniture pads -the little self-stick felt circles you put on furniture legs to reduce scratches on your floors. You might not know that these same pads can reduce scuff marks that appliances make on countertops. It also makes it easier to scoot around a heavy mixer or other appliance. ● “Here’s a great tip if you need to pack up something fragile: Use a shredder to shred sheets of newspaper. It works far better than just wrapping in paper, and it costs much less than packing peanuts. Also, you can reuse these shredded newspaper pieces in the garden, or put them in your compost pile.” -- R.C. in Minnesota ● “If you’re looking to save money, don’t ignore the dollar store. You can find a lot of personal-care and home-care items there for, well, a dollar. I save quite a bit of money this way.” -- R.L. in Texas Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O.
