HEART ATTACK FACTS:

• 37% of all deaths in the United States are related to heart disease, making it the largest single cause of natural death. Heart disease kills twice as many people as all forms of cancer combined. The major causes are smoking, fatty diet, high blood pressure, obesity, stress, heredity, lack of exercise, and diabetes. It is an illness produced of man’s environment. Before 1900, heart attacks were very rare. The rate of heart disease increased so sharply between 1940 and 1967 that the World Health Organization called it the world’s most serious epidemic.

• Every single cell in the heart is guided by an electrical impulse which synchronizes the heartbeat so all muscle cells contract in unison to pump the blood. During a heart attack, the cells begin firing out of turn so the efficiency of the heart is lost and the blood does not get pumped. When doctors shock the heart, the shock overrides each cell’s individual firing mechanism and once again synchronizes every cell, hopefully getting them all to work together again. cont'd next page!

• Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women. About a quarter of a million women will have a serious heart attack this year. It’s true that estrogen gives women a healthy edge in fighting heart disease, but after menopause, the risk increases yearly till women are equal with men. Between the ages of 45 and 65, one out of nine women will show symptoms of heart disease, compared to one in seven men. But after age 65, the ratio jumps to one in three, which is equal to that of men. However, studies have shown that in the first weeks following a heart attack, women are twice as likely to die as men. Furthermore, more women die during bypass surgery than do men. Why? • Some doctors say it’s due to a combination of factors. One is that when men go to a doctor and complain of chest pains, doctors automatically think of heart disease. But when women complain of chest pains, doctors may still think of heart trouble as a “man’s disease” and will look for other causes first. Furthermore, some doctors tend to think of women as having more psychosomatic illnesses than men. Women too are at fault, for a study has shown that they tend to wait longer than men before going to the hospital for help, increasing their chance of complications. • One cardiovascular surgeon theorizes that another reason more women die during bypass surgery is because they have proportionately smaller arteries, making the surgery more difficult. • Men suffer heart attacks an average of ten years earlier in life than women, but women are twice as likely to die from their first heart attack as men. • It’s estimated that 90% of heart disease could have been prevented. • On average, one person dies of a heart attack every minute in the U.S.

What Voice Drives Me

There are 2 voices that are competing for your ears. Both have different roots and both have different results. One voice is rooted in anger, pain, and jealousy. It is screaming injustice and recruiting people to stand and fight; to roam, kill, and destroy. These voices are getting louder and harder to shut out as crowds and armies are forming in our streets and along our borders. The end result of this voice is death. The other is a “small still voice” that is rooted in love, peace, and mercy. It is the voice of God through His Word that is calling us to seek Him and His righteousness. When we hear and respond to this voice, the result is a peace that surpasses all understanding and a life beyond what we see. The loud voice is recruiting those who are filled with rage, while the small still voice is recruiting those who are filled with a hunger to know God. The choice is ours and it depends on the desire for vengeance or the desire for mercy; determining the end result, life or death. “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord” Joshua 24:15

• About 600,000 Americans die of heart attacks each year. 350,000 of them die before they can even reach a hospital. • Cardiovascular problems are responsible for over half the deaths of people over age 65. • A quarter of the people who die of heart attacks show no previous sign of disease. • Stress plays a role in 70% of all illnesses. People under stress are six times as likely to have a heart attack as those under little stress. • The heart of a typical alcoholic may be twice the size it should be. • Smoking is responsible for 100,000 deaths from lung cancer and 170,000 deaths from heart attacks each year.

CUTTING THE RISKS

• People with coronary heart disease are 30% less likely to suffer from blocked arteries if they regularly take naps during the day. • Females who jog an average of 27 miles per week are sick an average of two days per year, compared to eleven sick days for female non-runners. Male runners missed an average of 1.5 days per year compared to 4.4 sick days for male nonrunners. • People who work in factories with high noise levels have higher rates of cardiovascular disease, digestive disorders, and circulatory problems than those with quieter workplaces. • A study of 45,000 men done by the Harvard University School of Public Health showed coffee does not increase the risk of heart attack or stroke as long as fewer than six cups per day are consumed. • Smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee at the same time raises the blood pressure. The combination of caffeine and nicotine also stops the effects of many high blood pressure medications. This spells danger for those whose blood pressure is already too high.

Q: Did you hear about the hamburger who couldn't stop making jokes? A: He was on a roll.

• In 1933 at the age of 58, Wilson Mizner had a heart attack in Hollywood, where he was a screen writer. When he regained consciousness, he was asked if he wanted to see a priest. “I want to see a priest, a rabbi, and a Protestant clergyman,” he said. “I want to hedge my bets!” When a priest came to his deathbed, Mizner waved him away, saying, “Why should I talk to you? I’ve just been talking to your boss!” He died shortly afterwards, reportedly with a smile. • Walter Matthau had a heart attack in the middle of filming The Fortune Cookie in 1966. He resumed filming five months later. In the movie, he goes out the door and comes back in again forty pounds lighter. • In 1975 Philadelphians re-elected Francis O’Donnell to the city council even though he had died of a heart attack a week earlier. There wasn’t time to change the ballots. • In 1973 two white cops in New York were giving mouth-to-mouth to a Puerto Rican woman who had suffered a heart attack and collapsed. A crowd of Puerto Ricans gathered and thought the cops were assaulting the woman. The policemen didn’t speak Spanish and the Puerto Ricans didn’t speak English. The mob beat the two cops. • Les Boatwright died of a heart attack a week before the Super Bowl XXIII game, to which he had two tickets. Knowing he wouldn’t want to miss the game, his two sons took the tickets, and his ashes, to the game. • Giuseppe De Mai was born with two hearts beating in his chest. In 1894 he signed a contract with the London Academy of Medicine, and was paid $15,000 for permission to study his hearts after his death.

Famous Canadians

JOHN HOPPS

• John Hopps was born in Winnipeg in 1919. After receiving a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Manitoba in 1941, he joined the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in 1942. He was researching hypothermia and experimenting with radio frequency heating to restore body temperature when he came to the attention of Dr. Wilfred Bigelow and Dr. John Callaghan at the Banting Institute in the University of Toronto. • This team of surgeons was researching methods of heart surgery. Dr. Bigelow believed that the only way cardiovascular medicine could advance was by enabling open-heart surgery. Based on his experience as a field medic during World War II, he was convinced that cooling the body and slowing the heart rate was the way to go. One of the challenges the surgeons faced was keeping the heart beating while the body was hypothermic. During an experimental surgery on a dog, they noticed that stimulating a stopped heart with an electrical probe could restart it, and that sending pulses of electrical current could actually change the heart’s rate. It was “a tremendous bit of good fortune,” said Dr. Bigelow in an interview about the discovery with the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. To turn this discovery into a clinical device, they recruited John Hopps. • John Hopps went to work designing the world’s first pacemaker. The first model, an external pacemaker developed in 1951, was about the size of a shoebox and needed to be plugged into an electrical outlet to work. It used vacuum tubes to generate electrical pulses. An insulated wire inserted through the jugular vein delivered the electric shocks to the right atrium of the heart. These shocks provided the artificial pacing. • It would be another ten years before internal pacemakers became a reality. The turning point was the invention of small silicon transistors to replace vacuum tubes. This technology allowed pacemakers to become small enough to be implanted in the body. • The first recipient of an internal pacemaker was Arne Larsson of Sweden in 1958. The prototype was about the size of a tin of shoe polish. Over his lifetime, Mr. Larsson received 28 devices and lived to the age of 86. • Today’s pacemakers are about the size of a USB stick. They may be as small as one inch in diameter and weigh as little as 0.5 oz. Pacemaker surgery is usually performed in less than an hour under a local anesthetic. In addition to being smaller, modern pacemakers are far more complex. Programmable pacemakers were introduced in the 1970s that allowed doctors to choose different pulse speeds and durations. Modern pacemakers include microprocessors that collect data about how well the heart and pacemaker are working. These microprocessors can also monitor the patient’s physical activity and adjust the heartbeat as needed. Some pacemakers can even restart the heart if it stops. • Dr. Hopps retired in 1979. Ironically enough, in 1984 he himself became a recipient of a pacemaker. By this point, inserting a pacemaker was considered to be routine surgery. His pacemaker lasted 13 years, at which time he received a new one. When his brother also needed a pacemaker, Hopps insisted his sibling pay him a royalty, but he refused to cough up. Hopps died in 1998 after seeing his invention save thousands of lives. • Today the Canadian company Mitel is the world’s largest manufacturer for the inside parts of the pacemaker.

1. More heart attacks occur on Mondays than any other3day of the week. 2. A single cell of the heart alone on a microscope slide will continue to pulsate indefinitely as long as it has a fresh supply of blood.

Jerry Robinson was serving a life sentence in Auburn, New York, for the murder of two police officers. During open-heart surgery, his heart stopped beating for two minutes. Afterwards he petitioned to be released from prison because his natural life had ended when his heart stopped. His petition was denied.

Senior News Line by Matilda Charles

Yoga Boosts Memory

Yoga is thought of as an umbrella term for various forms of the discipline, but some kinds of yoga are said to be better for seniors than others. A study done by the University of Illinois focused on Hatha yoga, which uses specific poses with flowing movements, meditation and breathing. Researchers divided seniors ranging from 55 to 79 years of age into two groups. One group did the specific Hatha yoga steps, and the other did toning and stretching. The results: Those who took the yoga classes three times a week for eight weeks had better information recall (faster and more accurate), as well as mental flexibility. They experienced “significant improvements in working memory capacity.” What’s key: The half of the participants who did only stretching and toning instead of yoga didn’t have the same cognitive performance results. There are, however, dozens of other forms of yoga for seniors to explore, and classes are popping up everywhere, as well as for tai chi and qigong. After taking yoga, tai chi and qigong classes, here is my assessment: Yoga (any kind) involves painful poses, some on the floor. Tai chi is done standing up, but poses are complicated. Qigong has gentle, flowing movements done standing up. All of them offer benefits for strength, flexibility, balance, stress reduction -- and memory, in my estimation. Your best bet is to find a yoga, tai chi or qigong class specifically for seniors, perhaps one that’s taught by your local senior center or hospital. Ask questions in advance. If you have a computer, go online to search yoga, tai chi and qigong individually. Check videos and watch the poses. Think about which type is right for you. You’ll get a benefit from all of them. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail. com. HO N ME IO IAT BUIL DERS ASSOC

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver

● It was notorious Irish writer (and noted wit) Oscar Wilde who made the following sage observation: “Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.” ● Something to think about before you make your next call: Those who study such things say that cellphones harbor more bacteria than the toilet handles in a public restroom. ● The first private bathrooms on record date back to 8,000 B.C. Archaeologists on the Scottish island of Orkney have found the remains of stone huts built on a drainage system that emptied into a nearby stream. ● If you’ve ever seen bears groggily emerge from hibernation in the springtime, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that a group of them is collectively known as a sloth of bears. (They’re also sometimes called a sleuth of bears, though the reasons for that are not obvious, as bear detectives seem somewhat improbable.) ● A lightning bolt is five times hotter than the surface of the sun. ● In the 1950s it was possible to buy a child’s atomic laboratory set. The U-238 Atomic Energy Set, marketed by the A.C. Gilbert Company, included low-level radioactive sources, uranium-bearing ore and a radiation gauge. ● When you’re standing outside in a hard rain, the raindrops are hitting you at about 20 mph. ● Every family has that one member who is hopelessly lazy, finding any excuse to avoid exerting effort. If you’d like to expand your vocabulary -- and avoid internecine squabbles -- you can call him or her a scobberlotcher. My wife has more then one sibling that seems to find laziness a way of life. So this may be a hereditary disease just gone undiagnosed. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: While putting some stuff in the attic, I heard some scratching and squeaking sounds. I know we don’t have mice in the house, but I couldn’t see any nests or fur around the attic. Sitting outside the next day though, I saw a squirrel climb under the eaves and disappear. Do you think I have a squirrel infestation? How do I get rid of them? -- Wigged Out in Washington A: You may very well have a squirrel infestation. Like other rodents, squirrels can damage insulation and electrical wiring, so getting rid of them is a priority. Take a closer look at your home’s eaves and soffits to find out all the points of entry. It’s likely that some small damage occurred underneath the eaves, and the squirrels exploited it. They will still be using this new “front door” they created. Head back into the attic and hunt for nests or other signs of squirrels. Nests often are built using insulation -- sometimes in the insulation -- along the outer edges of the attic. Also, locate the entry point and other points of entry and mark them with chalk or tape. Block up all entry points except one. From this point, you have a choice to make: Do you want to trap and release the squirrels, or do you want to kill them? If it’s the latter, you can place poison bait for rodents (including squirrels) near entry points and nests, or use kill traps. If that’s not your thing, purchase a live trap with a one-way door. Set it in the attic at the one remaining entry point. Do this at midday, when the squirrels are more likely to be out looking for food. If you’re not sure that they’re outside, set a live trap near the nesting spot, with a little bait inside (like peanut butter). Once trapped, take the squirrel(s) to a new area, away from other houses but not too far from their original roaming area. Once done, block the remaining entry point and then repair all damaged areas. Additionally, have an electrician go over the attic wiring to make sure it hasn’t been damaged. HOME TIP: Don’t block attic vents to prevent squirrel infestation; instead, install a sturdy mesh cover to keep rodents out while allowing crucial airflow in. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

● Frugal doesn’t have to mean unfashionable. There are plenty of how-to instructions on the Internet for turning fashion trash into treasure. For starters, try searching how to turn an old T-shirt into a skirt with a minimum of fuss, then explore sites like Pinterest and Instructables.com for more projects. -- JoAnn ● Want a fun way to save? Pick a particular currency item (maybe a $5 bill or dimes) and every time you get one, put it in a jar. See how much you save in a month doing this. See how long you can go without missing the money. ● “To clean a vase with an impossibly skinny neck, try adding a scoop of rice to the vase with a little hot water and dish soap. Shake to scrub.” -- M.M. in Indiana ● A better use for soda: Use it to scrub your pots and pans. If you have grime and slime, try letting the acids in soda pop work it out for you. Pour enough soda to cover the bottom of the pots or pans and let soak for 5-10 minutes. Then scrub away.

Trivia Newsfront Answers 1. There are 60 to 100 heartbeats per minute, 100,000 times per day, 2 billion times in a lifetime. 2. Blood vessels would be nearly 100,000 miles long. 3. Each heartbeat ejects about 2 ounces of blood, which adds up to over 2500 gallons a day. There are about 1 pints of blood in the body, and in times of stress or exercise, the entire volume of blood can pass through the heart in a single minute. 4. When blood leaves the heart it is traveling 80 feet per second, or about one mile an hour. 5. Zeppo Marx invented a wristwatch that monitors the wearer’s heartbeat and sounds an alarm if it is abnormal.

● “When the weather starts to dry out, and my skin along with it, I turn to coconut oil. I keep a jar in the bathroom, and I apply it even before I get out of the shower. My skin gets really red and torn up otherwise. I thought this might help others, too.” -- K.S. in Massachusetts ● When choosing an airline seat, you should know that you’ll feel less turbulence at the front of the cabin. Exit rows have more legroom, but they tend to be colder as well. Sound carries forward, so if you don’t want to be bothered by the little ones or random chatter, sit toward the back.
