I had never had so much fun in a parade as I did in the Troy Mills Parade. I was told that we could have water balloons and that they normally have a large turnout. Considering that Troy Mills does not have any local government I did not plan on enough balloons for the crowd size. I guess it goes to show that without any government interference how much more can be done. I plan to participate in next years parade but will be armed with much more for the spectators and other parade participants. It’s obvious by where some of the spectators sit that getting wet is to be expected when watching this parade. I could only imagine how many watermelons and other fruit would be smashed along the route if comedian Gallagher were to have a float in the parade! I will stick to air and water balloons, but just think of the sloppy mess those people along the street shoulder would be with watermelons being smashed five feet from them. Any ways, mark your calender for next year to attend the July 4th parade in Troy Mills if you want to enjoy a great parade!

VA Health-Care Fixes

It was a depressing moment when I read a news release from the Department of Veterans Affairs that disclosed one of the steps being taken to fix the scheduling debacle. It hosted an Industry Day to meet with tech vendors about scheduling-system acquisitions. The VA is looking for an “innovative scheduling product” to add to the health records system. The meeting will let officials know what they need to include in an eventual solicitation for the product. How long will it take to solicit, buy, install and implement? Then a newer VA news release said it’s “now contacted approximately 70,000 veterans across the country to get them off of wait lists and into clinics for medical appointments.” Long pause here ... while I parse the careful phrase used. We want to know: Did all those 70,000 veterans get an appointment or just contact? Are the appointments soon? Were some referred out to non-VA medical care? Here are some new steps the VA is taking: • Visit sites once a month to review scheduling practices. • Establish a new patient measurement program to gauge by location the satisfaction of veterans, including ones trying to get health care for the first time. • Hold senior leaders accountable. • Order a hiring freeze at VA health’s central (VHA) and regional (VISN) offices. • Do away with the 14-day scheduling goal as part of employees’ performance plans. • Post data twice a month to update the health-care access info. As I scrolled down the list, I keep looking for the big step that would help prevent these scheduling shenanigans from happening again. And finally, at the bottom, there it was: Suspending Performance Awards -VA has suspended all VHA senior executive performance awards for FY2014. Bingo. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@ gmail.com. Fresh Corn, the Candy of Summer

City of Walker

With summer under way, many of us are planning parties and family celebrations. There also is a bounty of farm-fresh produce to inspire our menus, whether it be a picnic at the park, a shrimp boil on the beach or a backyard barbecue. For many, the star of these festive summertime meals is milkysweet fresh corn, right off the cob. Roadside stands are popping up all over, farmer’s markets have mounds for the picking and your local grocery should have a pile of fresh corn to peel right there in the store. This almost candy-like vegetable is an American favorite. With so many other vegetables on the culinary forefront these days -- some that really need an acquired taste -- corn almost feels like a guilty pleasure. Farm-fresh corn should be enjoyed for its blatant deliciousness while re-creating and reliving food memories we’ve been making for years. While we all know how important corn was as an early American food, it has taken scientists decades to learn how corn evolved as a domesticated, cultivated grain. They now know that corn, like wheat and rice, has a wild ancestor. Corn is related to a grass called teosinte. Early farmers began the process of seed selection over many years, but with surprisingly dramatic effects. They saved and planted kernels from plants with the most desirable characteristics. This was the primitive beginning of hybridization. The corn our ancestors ate was called “field corn” and was somewhat different from what we now grow and eat today. Some field corn was eaten fresh, but most of it was dried and ground into cornmeal. It also was used as a livestock feed. Today, corn is used in almost innumerable ways, making it one of the most studied, reviewed and important crops of our agricultural economy. You may wonder if corn is good for you. While it’s true that corn is high in sugar and starch, it also possesses a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals, like vitamin B-6 and magnesium, along with a significant amount of dietary fiber. Add to that the simple pleasure of eating a fresh ear of corn. Taking that first bite is a taste sensation, something we shouldn’t deny ourselves. It brings a little happiness, and that has got to be good for you. Try my recipe for Fresh Corn Roasted With Herb Butter and make some delicious memories.

FARMER’S MARKET July 10, 2014 4:30-6:30 PM At Sherbon’s Flower Market FRESH CORN ROASTED WITH HERB BUTTER

This delicious herb butter also is good on other vegetables, steak, chicken, seafood or grilled bread. 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened 2 1/2 tablespoon minced green onion 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 1/2 tablespoons minced parsley 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg 1 to 2 dashes, hot sauce 1. In a small bowl, mix together butter, green onion, lemon juice, parsley, salt, pepper, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, nutmeg and hot sauce. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour or up to 7 days. Leave husks on corn, but remove the silk strands. Spread each ear of corn with 1 tablespoon herb butter. Wrap each ear in the husk in foil. 2. Roast corn on barbeque grill, turning every 3 to 4 minutes for 10 to 15 minutes, or use oven broiler, and place corn 4 inches from heating element for 30-minutes, turning every 5 to 10 minutes, or until kernels are tender. 3. BOOKS -- Recommended Reading “The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth: Entrepreneurship for Weirdos, Misfits, and World Dominators” by Chris Brogan (Wiley, $25) Reviewed by Molly Ford Are you wondering how you can leverage your unique personality to find success? How you can build a successful company without “selling out”? If there’s a place for you and your distinctive ideas in the business world? (Yes!) Then pick up “The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth” by Chris Brogan. From the first page, you’ll begin to feel buoyed by stories from other “freaks” and empowered by tips. This quick-moving book guides you on the path to better aligning your “freak” self with the goal of financial stability and, ultimately, financial success. What is unique about “Freaks” is that the advice and examples apply whether you are working inside a company or are already an entrepreneur. A principle tenant of the book is the importance of running your own “media empire”; the book emphasizes the power there is in ownership of your own brand, skills and life’s direction, and how thinking of yourself or your company as a media empire can help reach ownership-related goals. “Freaks” also covers topics like waiting for permission (hint: don’t!), managing fear and failure, setting structure to your day and creating systems that work in an attainable, ofthe-moment way. Referencing current tech tools and modernday business successes reinforce key points. Perfect for anyone considering becoming an entrepreneur, thinking about how to leverage their skills in a corporate environment, looking for practical advice on increasing productivity, or business owners looking to move their company to the next step, “Freaks” is a fun, informative work that dares you to make a move. If you want to be a success on your own terms, this is your read. For more book reviews by Molly Ford, visit SmartPrettyandAwkward.com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOLLYWOOD By Tony Rizzo PHOTO: Colin Firth HOLLYWOOD -- Jared Leto, who won an Oscar for playing a transsexual in “Dallas Buyers Club,” is changing his image with the science-fiction thriller “Brilliance.” (Will Smith, originally cast, had to bow out to star in Ridley Scott’s next film). The movie is about children born savants (aka “brilliant”), with special powers. Leto plays a government master hunter tracking down savant terrorists intending to start a civil war. Talk about irony! Colin Firth, an Oscar winner for “The King’s Speech,” has bowed out of providing the voice for “Paddington,” the accident-prone young bear. Firth admitted, “It’s been bittersweet to see this delightful creature take shape, and come to the sad realization that he simply doesn’t have a voice. I’ve had the joy of seeing most of the film, and it’s going to be quite wonderful.” Have no fear, though. Firth is in Woody Allen’s new comedy, “Magic in the Moonlight,” with Emma Stone and Marcia Gay Harden, out July 25; the mystery thriller “Before I Go to Sleep,” with Nicole Kidman, out later this year; and the British spy-thriller “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” with Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Caine, out Oct 24. Jay Leno’s gone but not forgotten! He’ll be this year’s recipient of The Mark Twain Prize (won last year by Carol Burnett). Leno receives his prize at The Kennedy Center Oct. 19, and on PBS Nov. 23. Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein said, “Like Mark Twain, Jay Leno has offered us a lifetime’s worth of humorous commentary on American daily life. For both men, no one was too high or too low to escape their wit, and we are all the better for it.” “Harry Potter’s” Rupert Grint will make his Broadway debut in Terrance McNally’s 1982 comedy, “It’s Only a Play.” Grint, recently on the London stage in “Mojo,” will attract young “Potter” fans, while Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick’s reteaming after their Broadway mega-hit “The Producers” will be a huge draw. “It’s Only a Play” also will have “Will & Grace’s” Megan Mullally, “Grease’s” Stockard Channing (she played Betty Rizzo) and “Amadeus” Oscar-winner F. Murray Abraham. It will open Oct. 9 for a limited run; better plan your trip and order your tickets now. harlie Hunnam had to bow out of “50 Shades of Gray” because of commitments to “Sons of Anarchy” and Guillermo del Toro’s “Crimson Peak,” with Jessica Chastain and Tom Huddleston (out in October 2015). He explains, “When you put time into something like that and a character comes alive in your mind, it’s heartbreaking not to be able to play him.” To Hunnam fans hoping to see him in various stages of nudity, it’s more like 50 shades of disappointment! Many of my childhood summer memories are based on cranking the handle of ice-cream makers at picnics and family reunions. Nowadays, when you ask kids about ice cream, they are more likely to associate it with the cold, hazy cloud coming out of the supermarket freezer than with the sound of ice swirling around in an ice-cream maker on a hot summer evening. You don’t need a commercial machine to make the real thing. For an unconventional method, use plastic bags, a simple old-fashioned recipe and your kids’ energy. Here’s the latest scoop on how to make a basic, no-cook vanilla ice cream. SHAKE-AND-MAKE ICE CREAM Serves 2

ANSWERS

1 gallon-size sturdy, zipper-style plastic bag 2 pint-size zipper-style plastic bags Several cups of crushed ice to fill the large bag halfway full 1/2 cup coarse salt such as kosher salt, or rock salt for ice cream Ingredients: 1 cup half-and-half cream, or mix halfand-half cream with heavy whipping cream

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons sugar 1. Stir together cream, vanilla and sugar in a bowl. Add an optional extra if you wish. Pour into one of the smaller bags. Press out as much air as possible, then seal it. Slip that bag into a second pint-size bag, release air and seal.

2. Scoop enough ice into the larger bag to generously cover the bottom. Sprinkle some salt over the ice. Set the small sealed bags inside the large bag, then add more ice and salt. Release air and seal. 3. Hold the large bag with both hands and turn it over and over, massage it, and gently shake it consistently for 15 minutes. Since it will feel very cold, you may wish to wrap it in a towel or wear mittens as you work. 4. When the mixture turns into ice cream, carefully unseal the outer pintsize bag before opening the inner bag, making sure that ice and salt don’t get into your batch of ice cream. Spoon into bowls and enjoy. If you wish to eat it later, spoon it into a storage container and put into the freezer. TIP: Add optional extras such as 1/4 cup crushed ripe strawberries or peaches, mini chocolate chips or a squirt of chocolate syrup *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide.
