Restless Leg Syndrome No Laughing Matter DEAR DR. ROACH: Why do people snicker when I tell them I have RLS? They wouldn’t laugh if they knew the amount of sleep deprivation I have endured during the 20 years it took to correctly diagnose it. I think if it hadn’t been for Sinemet (levodopa and carbidopa), a Parkinson’s drug, I would have gone mad long ago. Has anyone discovered what causes it? -- G.S.G. ANSWER: Restless leg syndrome causes an urge to move the legs (and sometimes arms), which is worse at nighttime and is relieved by movement. It is usually accompanied by unpleasant sensations in the legs. When accompanied by sleep deprivation, as yours has been, it is also called periodic limb movement disorder. The cause is known only in a minority of cases. About 40 percent of cases seem to run in families, and several genetic factors have been identified. Iron deficiency sometimes is associated with RLS, and replacement of the iron can
improve symptoms. Moderate exercise, leg massage and heat (say, a warm bath before bed) are some nondrug ways of improving symptoms. Levodopa/carbidopa is an effective treatment; pramipexole (Mirapex) and ropinirole (Requip) also are effective for many people. There are other alternatives as well. An expert in the condition, usually a neurologist, is essential for severe cases. I think the name “restless leg syndrome” may be part of the reason why people don’t take this condition as seriously as it deserves. After all, legs are supposed to move, and being “restless” doesn’t sound so bad -- but as you know, it’s a lot more than that. For this reason, the new name, Willis-Ekbom disease, is preferred by some. Great information about this condition is available at RLS.org. The booklet on restless leg syndrome and nighttime cramps offers more tips. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 306W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Which group released “Never Been to Spain” on their “Harmony” album? 3. Name the 1965 hit song that Petula Clark really disliked recording and wanted to dump. 4. Who sang lead on “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)” in 1968? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “I look in the mirror and all I see, Is a young old man with only a dream, Am I just fooling myself, That she’ll stop the pain, Living without her, I’d go insane.” Answers 1. Black Eagles, Skid Row and Orphanage. Thin Lizzy’s first big hit was 1972’s “Whiskey in the Jar.” 2. Three Dog Night, in 1971. The song was a cover of Hoyt Axton’s version. 3. “My Love,” The song sent her back to the top of the charts. 4. Kenny Rogers, of country music fame. He was with The First Edition then. 5. “She’s Like the Wind,” by Patrick Swayze in the 1987 movie “Dirty Dancing.” After the movie’s difficult filming, one company executive suggested burning the original and collecting the insurance. “Dirty Dancing” would become the highest-grossing film of the year. Golf Outing, 2 person best shot 252 Broadway Street, Springville 319-854-7325 VETERANS POST by Freddy Groves Deported Veterans Can Return in Coffin Hundreds, perhaps thousands of foreign-born U.S. military veterans who have been convicted of crimes and served their time in prison have been deported, despite living legally in the U.S. since childhood. They are dumped in the country of their birth -- a country they may have no memory of, where a language they may not understand is spoken. What kept those service members from filing for American citizenship when they could have, five years after getting a green card? One theme stands out: Many were told by recruiters and at boot camp that U.S. citizenship was automatic when they were honorably discharged from the military. Others came back from service overseas in no shape, physically or mentally, to deal with bureaucracy. Where do we draw the line with deporting veterans? Immigrant lawbreakers who are not veterans are routinely deported for serious crimes. Does being a veteran and putting your life on the line for this country count for anything after you pay your debt to society? For a U.S. citizen, you do your time and you go free. And what of the crimes these deportee veterans commit? Should a line be drawn to distinguish between nonviolent and violent crimes? Felonies can include any number of crimes, some more serious than others. Some misdemeanors can be interpreted as aggravated felonies when it comes to immigration and deportation. Here’s the kicker: Deported veterans can’t come back -- until they’re dead. If they were discharged under honorable conditions, they qualify for burial in a veterans cemetery and the government will kick in $300 to have the body returned. Additionally, veterans still qualify for benefits, but they can’t get here to claim them. To learn more, go online and research “veterans deported.” Look up immigration-law expert Margaret Stock, a retired military police lieutenant colonel, and read some of the stories she tells. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@ gmail.com. BOOKS -- Recommended Reading “Pola Negri: Hollywood’s First Femme Fatale” by Mariusz Kotowski (University Press of Kentucky, $40)
Reviewed by Larry Cox
One of the first truly great movie stars of the early American film industry was a former ballerina who overcame an impoverished childhood in Poland and a bout with tuberculosis to become legendary and celebrated throughout the world. Pola Negri was born in 1897 in Vistula Land in presentday Poland. Later, after being accepted into the Imperial Ballet of Warsaw, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis, which ended her dancing career. She next turned to acting and worked in Europe with such heavy hitters as Ernst Lubitsch and Max Reinhardt. She arrived in the United States in 1922 and made her first American film, “Bella Donna.” Its success led to a lucrative contract at Paramount, where she began to establish herself as a major film personality. Negri rented a large, Tudorstyle mansion and began exhibiting her flair for the exotic and eccentric. For example, she often was seen around Los Angeles in her chauffeur-driven limo, dressed in all white. As she later recalled, “I bought a limousine of pure white, trimmed with ivory and upholstered in white velvet. My chauffeur wore all-white uniforms on sunny days and all black when it rained. I used a white-fur lap rug and was usually seen with two white Russian wolf hounds.” She occasionally was seen strutting her stuff on the streets of Beverly Hills draped in either ermine or mink with her pet tiger in tow. After Rudolph Valentino went to Paris to finalize his divorce with Natacha Rambova, Negri and the star became an item. His sudden death in 1926 ended that relationship, and she became even more intriguing as the original “woman in black.” This crisply written, meticulously researched biography documents one of Hollywood’s most fascinating film stars, and also explores the link between Hollywood and European cinema during the interwar years. The Linn County Conservation Board is evaluating alternatives for mitigating the Buffalo Creek dam in Coggon, Iowa. The public is encouraged to attend an information gathering meeting Thursday, June 19, at the Coggon Center from 5:30 to 7:30. Members of Linn County Conservation, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the consulting firms of Riverwise Engineering and Shive-Hattery Inc. will be on hand to seek input and answer questions. Buffalo Creek is on the state's Impaired Waters list. The dam currently has safety and environmental issues which need to be addressed. JILL JACKSON’S HOLLYWOOD By Tony Rizzo PHOTO: John Wayne HOLLYWOOD -- John Wayne was born 35 miles southwest of Des Moines, Iowa, on May 26, 1907. He was nominated twice for an Academy Award, in 1949 for “The Sands of Iwo Jima” and in 1969 for “True Grit,” for which he won the Best Actor Oscar. “John Wayne, The Life and Legend,” a new 574-page book by Scott Eyman, takes readers from “The Duke’s” early days, breaking into B-movie Westerns, to his rise as an American icon and living legend. Wayne became the symbol of Americana. Women loved him, and American males considered his Westerns and war films must-see movies, making him a top box-office draw for more than three decades. Who can forget the “I Love Lucy” episode where Lucy and Ethel steal his footprints from the forecourt of Grauman’s Chinese Theater? In 1970, when he won the Photoplay magazine award as Most Popular Male star, I had a column in Photoplay and was on the receiving line at a huge gala at The Beverly Hills Hotel. After the official presentations on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show,” The Duke came down the line and I introduced him to my publisher and editor. I then asked if I could have a picture taken with him. Big John reached behind me and literally hoisted me up by the collar of my shirt, and then asked, “Have we done this before?” Stunned, I told him, “No, sir!” He turned me toward the camera and said, “Smile!” For that moment in time, I was elevated to 6’4” and was as tall as John Wayne. *** Matthew McConaughey, who’ll next be seen come November in “Interstellar,” with Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Ellen Burstyn, Michael Caine, John Lithgow, Casey Affleck, William Devane and Matt Damon, has scheduled “Magic Mike XXL” for a July 2015 release. Leonardo DiCaprio is preparing to produce (and star in?) “Blood on Snow,” and despite claiming he’s going to take a long break, is considering playing Steve Jobs in Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle’s as-yet-untitled film, written by Aaron Sorkin. When the Elephant Crisis Fund raised more than $2 million at a recent Malibu Gala, $1 million of it was donated by DiCaprio. Tom Hanks has completed filming in Morocco and Germany for his next film, “A Hologram for a King,” with Tom Skerritt. *** “Two and a Half Men’s” upcoming 12th season will be its last. Less fortunate were a slew of recent shows that won’t return next season: “Bad Teacher,” “Believe,” “Betrayal,” “Community,” “The Crazy Ones,” “Crisis,” “Dracula,” “Enlisted,” “Friends With Better Lives,” “Intelligence,” “Mixology,” “The Neighbors,” “Rake,” “Suburgatory” and “Trophy Wife,” among the many. Mosquitoes have a longer life span than some of those shows! (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

When it’s time to prep a dinner meal this week, get your kids stacking the green, white and red layers of fresh basil, mozzarella and tomato. If they say their culinary creation reminds them of winter’s Christmas colors, guide them to a photo of the tricolor green, white and red Italian flag. This fun-to-make version using a surprise ingredient, couscous, is a tasty spring and summertime twist on Italy’s traditional caprese salad. I’ve always believed in using the right tools for the right job. In this recipe, it’s four recycled aluminum cans. Once you’ve removed labels and both ends of four 7-8 ounce clean cans (I used 7-ounce diced green chilies cans and made sure there were no sharp edges), gather the following ingredients to create a fancy-looking presentation.

1. Spray with nonstick spray or lightly wipe oil in the interior of the four cans. Set each can on end on a salad plate. 2. Trim the tomato and cheese slices to fit the interior of a can, then stack the individual portions in layers inside the can as follows: a tomato slice, 2 tablespoons of couscous mixture and a cheese slice. Repeat. 3. Cover with plastic wrap and press down on the stack gently with a jar or can slightly smaller than the opening of the can. 4. Remove wrap and slowly lift the can to reveal the layered salad. To serve, garnish with a fresh basil leaf or sprig of parsley. Drizzle balsamic vinegar to taste. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide.
