PACT (Patient Aligned Care Teams) was started in 2010 as a team approach to the wellness of individual veterans by using health plans with care provided at clinics and online via eHealth. Teams are made up of nurse care managers, clinical associates, providers and administrative associates, in tandem with nutritionists, social workers and pharmacists. Appointments with specialists are easily arranged. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it ... individualized medical attention. The veterans who receive these services like it, too, according to a VA news release. Here are some of the stats: • Using secure electronics such as telehealth video conferencing, email messaging, home-based monitoring, phone calls and group meetings, the number of interactions with veterans increased 50 percent. • Of veterans asking for a sameday appointment with their personal provider, 65 percent got it. Of those who asked for a specific appointment date, 78 percent were accommodated. In the past year, care during non-business hours increased 75 percent. • More than 70 percent of veterans who are discharged from the hospital are contacted within two days to make sure they understand their instructions and to see how they’re doing. ¥ Mental-health care services, also a component of PACT, increased 18 percent. • As a result of PACT, there’s been a 33 percent decrease in the number of veterans needing urgent care, and hospital admissions decreased 12 percent for acute conditions. The bottom line? In a PACT satisfaction survey, over 90 percent of veterans had positive assessments of both inpatient and outpatient care. BOOKS -- Recommended Reading “The Last Dark: The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant” By Stephen R. Donaldson (Penguin, $35) By Chris Richcreek Was it worth the wait? It’s a question fans often have to ask themselves when they embark upon a multiple-book fantasy series. Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series started in 1990 and eventually outlasted Jordan, who passed away in 2007. George R.R. Martin is under siege for his Song of Ice and Fire series, which began in 1996. Why? He’s “only” five books into the series, and fans want new books NOW! That brings us to “The Last Dark,” the culmination of the Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant and of the 10-book series. Author Stephen R. Donaldson has stated that he originally did not intend to go beyond the initial three books (published 1977-79), but here we are. The final book has everything most fans of the series would want: main characters like Thomas Covenant, Linden Avery and her son, Jeremiah, and Lord Foul; beloved supporting characters like the Haruchai, Ranyhyn and giants; and surprises throughout, many of which harken back to earlier books in the series. The plot? In short, the Worm of the World’s End, an amazingly powerful force, is set to obliterate the Land and destroy the Arch of Time, allowing Lord Foul to escape the world and take on The Creator. The only ones standing in the way are Covenant, Avery, Jeremiah and a small troupe of the Land’s defenders. Sections of gripping action are followed by necessary, but perhaps unnecessarily long segments. Yet Donaldson remains a skilled storyteller who weaves in deep themes, and his love for not-often-heard words like “puissance” remains intact. And the ending? Well, it wraps things up, but it probably won’t satisfy all the fans of the series. Plus, a suspicious person might think there are still enough loose threads to forge another sequel. But for most, it is the finishing point. The wait is over, the story is done -- hope you enjoyed the journey. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

COGGON WHAT?
Coggon Center! One year ago, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the Coggon Center to recognize and celebrate its grand opening. With the help of volunteers, who spent countless hours cleaning and renovating the building, it has been transformed into a community center that offers shopping, recreation, and rental space. More than that, the Coggon Center is also where morning walkers greet each other as they complete the walking circuit. It’s a place where Card Club meets each Thursday afternoon. It’s where Santa stationed his mailbox this winter, and where he arrived by fire truck on his layover to the North Pole. For some, it’s a building full of memories. For others, it’s a building with potential. For others still, it’s just a building. WHAT IS IT TO YOU?

JILL JACKSON’S HOLLYWOOD By Tony Rizzo PHOTO: Ryan Gosling HOLLYWOOD -- Ryan Gosling has written, produced and directed his first film, “Lost River” (formerly called “How to Make a Monster”), starring Christina Hendricks, Eva Mendes and former “Dr. Who” Matt Smith. The film premiered in Cannes, and most critics were not kind. Reviewers called the film “a train wreck”; “a conceited clunker”; “an overcooked affair that lacks much-needed wit and humor”; “an arty mess”; and “colossally indulgent, shapeless, often fantastically and unthinkingly offensive, and at the same time insufferably conceited”! One favorable critic did say it was “an impressive, impressionistic, wellwrought debut for Ryan Gosling -- very David Lynch.” Gosling will need to rethink and re-edit the film if he wants a distributor to release his first directorial work. Jennifer Aniston will soon be everywhere: “Life of Crime,” with Tim Robbins and Isla Fisher, will be released Aug. 29. “Horrible Bosses 2” will open Nov. 26, followed by the recently completed “Cake” (which she stars in and exec-produced) with Anna Kendrick, Sam Worthington, and William H. Macy and his wife, Felicity Huffman. Then comes next year’s “She’s Funny That Way,” opposite Owen Wilson (directed by Peter Bogdanovich), and “Convention,” a sci-fi comedy she’s currently shooting with “Ghandi” Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley. Woody Allen’s new film finally has a title, “Magic in the Moonlight,” and it’s shooting in the south of France with Emma Stone and Marcia Gay Harden. It’ll hit screens July 25. *** Why do networks keep pitting our favorite shows opposite each other? It only erodes the ratings of both shows. “Dancing With the Stars” finale drew 14.9 million viewers, while “The Voice” finale drew 11.6 million viewers. Imagine their ratings if they hadn’t been thrown against each other. If you love watching both shows and didn’t have a DVR, you either had to choose between them or yo-yo back and forth. The once powerful juggernaut “American Idol,” not up against anything significant, saw its finale drop off dramatically from last season’s finale. Is the death rattle in the air for “Idol”? Meanwhile, “I Wanna Marry Harry” flopped with a 0.7 rating (under age 50), and “Judge Judy’s” prime-time special drew a 0.9 rating in key demographics. Last week we revealed the new shows that were canceled, now here are the old shows that are starting their final season: “Mad Men” (7th), “Glee” (6th), “Cougar Town” (6th), HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” (5th), “Justified” (6th), HBO’s “The Newsroom” (3rd), “Parenthood” (6th), “Sons of Anarchy” (5th), HBO’s “True Blood” (7th) and “Parks & Recreation” (7th). Make a Day Filled With Rainbows Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. A rainbow of colors that delight kids when they appear like magic, streaming across the sky after a shower. Since young kids love anything to do with rainbows, why not spend a rainbow-filled afternoon with them doing activities bursting with color? Here are a few simple-to-do ideas that playfully and artfully teach the basic spectrum and the hues in between.
RAINBOW WEAR Choose clothes to wear from head to toe representing the colors of the rainbow. Name them, sing a song about them and then draw a self-portrait in living color. RAINBOW ART On the left side of a large sheet of construction paper, spoon puddles of poster paint in the sequence of rainbow colors, one above the other. Leave a small
space in between. Using a standard household squeegee, spread the paint in an arc with one swift movement to instantly form a rainbow. Once kids try this offkilter technique, they’ll likely add more paint and drag their new painting tool in different directions, making rainbow paths and valleys all over the paper. Hang the rainbow art on the wall, wrap up a birthday present with it or use for a place mat, a colorful addition to springtime snacking. Wash your squeegee in soapy water after use. You might decide to add one to your family art-supply box. RAINBOW DREAMS Use your kids’ rainbow art to inspire a bedtime story about an adventure “over the rainbow.” Ask them to describe what they would like to find at the end of the rainbow. ***
RAINBOW DISCOVERIES Rainbows aren’t just in the sky. On a sunny day, pour some water in a clear glass, then tilt it sideways and move it slowly along the edge of the kitchen counter until you catch rays of sun shining through the water. A beautiful ribbon of rainbow colors will appear on a white floor or on a white sheet of paper placed on the floor.
