TIDBITS® HEADS TO THE

SUMMER OLYMPICS

by Kathy Wolfe The XXXI Summer Olympic Games are being held August 5 - 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. What better time for Tidbits to bring you the data on the history of this event! • The Rio Games are the first time in Olympic history that a South American country has hosted the Games. The decision for Rio was made in 2009, with the city triumphing over Chicago, Madrid, and Tokyo. The cost to Rio for hosting the games will be in the $95 million range. The official motto for this year’s game is “Live your passion.” • There are 33 different venues in four different areas of Rio for the games. There are 7.5 million tickets available, ranging in price from $40 for a seat at some swimming events to about $3,000 for a prime seat at the opening ceremony. The opening and closing ceremonies will be held at the city’s largest sporting venue, Maracana Stadium. Although the stadium’s official seating capacity is 78,000, during the 1950 World Cup final, more than 170,000 fans were packed into that arena. • The security force will be twice as large as that of the London 2012 Summer Games, with 85,000 soldiers and policemen drafted into service for the event. turn the page for more!

VICTORIES FOR VETERANS Brandon Marchioni

“MY VICTORY IS BEING HERE FOR MY FAMILY.” DAV.org

• Although Olympic Games were held in ancient Greece, the first modern Olympic Games were the Summer Olympics held in 1896, appropriately held in Athens, Greece. The modern games have only been cancelled three times – the 1916 games because of World War I -and the 1940 and 1944 games because of World War II. • One city, London, has hosted the Summer Games three times – in 1908, 1948, and 2012. The Games have been held in the United States four times in three different cities – St. Louis in 1904, Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984, and Atlanta in 1996. • Only five countries have been represented at every modern Summer Olympics – Greece, Great Britain, France, Switzerland, and Australia. • For decades, the Summer and Winter Games were held in the same year. That changed after 1992, the last time they were scheduled as such. Since that time, the two Olympiads are staggered two years apart. • Canadian equestrian Ian Millar has appeared in more Olympic Games than any other athlete. Since 1972, Millar has competed in ten Summer Games, every Olympics until 2012, with the exception of the 1980 Moscow Games, boycotted by Canada. Although Millar has never won Olympic gold, he did win a gold medal in the 2015 Pan American Games. His only Olympic medal was a silver in 2008. • Swimmer Michael Phelps has won more Olympic medals than any other athlete, with a total of 22 won in three Olympiads. He is also the record-holder for most golds at 18. Up until 2008, U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz held the record for the most golds at any single Olympic Games, with seven first-place finishes at the 1972 Games in Munich. Phelps broke that record at the 2008 Games in Beijing. After his final race in Rio he now stands at 23 Gold medals! When Phelps was in the sixth grade, he was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Maybe the word disorder should be changed to benefit.

EVERY YEAR, DAV HELPS MORE THAN A MILLION VETERANS IN LIFE-CHANGING WAYS.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver

● The lyrics to that favorite Irish ballad “O Danny Boy” were actually written by an Englishman. ● Famed comedic actor Charlie Chaplin was born in England, but at the age of 19 he came to the United States as a performer with the prestigious Fred Karno company. Interestingly, Stan Laurel, of Laurel and Hardy fame, emigrated to the U.S. at the same time, as part of the same company -- as Chaplin’s understudy. ● In a recent survey of pet owners, nearly half of all respondents said that the best description of their relationship with their pet would be “soul mate.” (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

• The only athlete in any sport to win the same Olympic event six times was Hungarian Aladar Gerevich, who competed in fencing. His first trip to the Olympics was to the 1932 Los Angeles Games at age 22, where he captured his first gold medal. He repeated his feat in 1936. After World War II, Gerevich won two golds in London in 1948, and in Helsinki’s 1952 Games, he won one of each, gold, silver, and bronze. Another gold followed in 1956. His final Olympic appearance was at the 1960 Games in Rome, when he was 50 years old, achieving his final gold. Oddly enough, Gerevich’s wife, son, and father-in-law were also Olympic medalists. • Only one person has won gold medals in both the Summer and Winter Olympics. In 1920, American Eddie Eagan was the light heavyweight boxing champ in Antwerp, Belgium. Although he entered the ring again in 1924 at the Paris Summer Games, he failed to get a medal. In 1932, at age 35, Eagan was a member of the four-man bobsled team at the Lake Placid Games. He had just taken up the sport three weeks before the Olympics, but achieved a gold medal. Eagan went on to attain the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army during World War II, after which he became an attorney, serving as southern New York’s assistant district attorney. • A Swedish marksman holds the record for the oldest man to compete in the Summer Olympiad. Oscar Swahn, who competed in the 1908, 1912, and 1920 Olympics, was nearly 73 years old in his final contest in 1920. He became the oldest gold medalist at the 1912 games, at age 64 years, 280 days. He took silver in 1920. • The 1900 and 1904 Games included the game of golf, which, after an absence of 112 years, returns to the Rio Games this year, featuring an 18-hole course.

is what people are doing all across town

The more people read Tidbits, the more people are looking at your ad. The more people who see your ad it will increase the chance to convert them to your clients.

• British equestrian Lorna Johnstone competed at the 1972 Olympics at age 70, the oldest woman to date. Danish swimmer Inge Sorenson took home a bronze medal from the 1936 Berlin Games at age 12, the youngest medalist ever in an individual event. To compete in the Rio Games, competitors must have been born before January 1, 2003. • The 1900 Summer Games in Paris featured a rather bizarre event, that of pigeon shooting, the only time that animals were killed on purpose in an Olympic event. The winner, a Belgian marksman, bagged 21 out of the 300 birds released. It was the first, last, and only time the event was on the roster. The 1900 Games also marked the first time women were allowed to compete. Another one-time-only event, croquet, was held for women, but proved quite unpopular, with only one spectator purchasing a ticket. It was also the year that the ancient tug-of-war was brought back, a contest that required two teams of eight men, each attempting to drag the other for a distance of 6 feet within five minutes. The tug-of-war remained an event through 1920. • At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, the referee docked Korean boxer Byun Jong-Li two points for head-butting his opponent. When a brawl ensued after the final results favored his opponent, the Korean head coach punched the ref. Byun Jong-Li then staged a sit-down strike protesting his loss, sitting on the floor of the boxing ring for 67 minutes. Officials turned out the lights, leaving the boxer in the dark. • When an athlete wins a gold medal, he or she doesn’t really win a “gold” medal. Olympic medals haven’t been made of solid gold since Stockholm, Sweden’s 1912 Olympics. Today, they’re really silver with gold plating.

In too many senior patients, going under general anesthesia for surgery can leave a lingering problem with impaired concentration or memory. It’s called post-operative cognitive dysfunction, and in some cases, the effects might be permanent. The potential damage can depend on the degree of anesthesia. Add that to the trauma of the surgery itself, and there can be damage to the central nervous system. A study done in Brazil might have an answer to this growing problem: a drug called dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory. If given before an operation, the drug can help avoid problems while under anesthesia. For this study, researchers looked at 140 patients (ages 60 to 87) and gave “NATIONAL” WORDS (continued): pre-surgery tests to determine their • French: Chefs know what it means to mental status. THE “X” FACTOR

X marks the spot! This week, Tidbits “xamines” words beginning with the letter X. • The prefix xeno-, taken from the Greek language, refers to something that is strange, foreign, or different. It makes sense that a xenophobe is a person who is fearful of strangers or foreigners. • In 1937, an American law student named Chester Carlson invented a copying process based on electrostatic energy. Because the process was called xerography, which translates from the Greek for “dry writing,” Carlson’s patent application used the word “Xerox” as the name of his new creation. Carlson licensed his invention to the Haloid Photographic Company, founded in 1906, a firm that manufactured photographic paper and equipment. In 1958, the company name was changed to Haloid Xerox, and by 1961, was known simply as the Xerox Corporation. By the time Carlson died in 1968, he had donated over $150 million to various charities. • An engraving on wood or a print made from this engraving is known as a xylograph. The same root translates to the word xylophagous, which indicates a species that feeds on wood. • Wooden bars that are struck by mallets make up the musical instrument known as the xylophone. Each bar, often made of rosewood, is tuned to a pitch of the musical scale. Several cultures claim to be the originator of the instrument, with one explanation that it came to Africa around 500 A.D., brought by Polynesians. Other evidence indicates a type of xylophone from 2000 B.C. in ancient China. The word is a combination of Greek words, xylon, meaning “wood,” and phone, meaning “sound.” • Do you suffer from xeroderma? If you have abnormal dryness of the skin, this term applies to you! • From the 16th to the 19th centuries, pirates on the Mediterranean Sea sailed a small three-masted vessel with square and triangular sails that enabled them to sail faster than their prospective victims. Depending on the size of the ship, known as a xebec, between 16 and 40 guns might be mounted on the vessel. • The word xenia has a variety of meanings. To the ancient Greeks, it was the concept of hospitality, generosity, and courtesy shown to those far from home. To the botanist, it’s the effect of pollen on a seed. And to those in Ohio, it’s the county seat of Greene County, a community about 21 miles from Dayton. • Xystus is an architectural term, referring to a long, covered portico, or main entrance, of ancient Greek gymnasiums. Here, athletes would exercise during inclement weather. To the Romans, the xystus was the garden walkway in front of the porticoes, where they planted flower beds. • Physicians are familiar with two unusual “X” words, xyster and xiphisterna. The xyster is a surgical instrument used for scraping bones, while the xiphisterna refers to the cartilage at the lower end of the body’s sternum, that long flat bone located at the center of the chest.
