TIDBITS® CORRECTS SOME

MISQUOTES

by Kathy Wolfe It seems that many of us have been misquoting well-known phrases for years. This week, Tidbits sets the record straight on some of the more common ones. • We’ve all heard Murphy’s Law, something along the lines of, “If something can go wrong, it will, and usually at the worst time.” There was a real Murphy – Edward A. Murphy, a U.S. Air Force engineer who was working on a rocket-sled experiment in the late 1940s. The project involved mounting 16 accelerator instruments to a participant’s body. There were two ways the 16 sensors could be glued to the mount, and all 16 were installed backwards. Murphy was heard to say, “If there are two or more ways to do something, and one of those ways can result in a catastrophe, then someone will do it.” • One of the most often-misquoted lines in movie history is “Play it again, Sam” from the 1942 film “Casablanca.” Most folks believe that leading man Humphrey Bogart uttered the famous phrase. The pianist Sam is being asked to play the song “As Time Goes By.” Ingrid Bergman’s character Ilsa Lund says, “Play it once, Sam. For old times’ sake.” When Sam objects, she repeats, “Play it, Sam.” Later in the movie, Bogart says, “Play it!” No one ever says, “Play it again, Sam.” turn the page for more!

MISQUOTES (continued): • Me Tarzan, you Jane” is another movie line that never happened. In the 1932 film “Tarzan, the Ape Man,” actress Maureen O’Sullivan as Jane Parker was attempting to teach her language to Tarzan, played by Johnny Weissmuller, actor and former Olympian. Pointing to herself, she said, “Jane,” which Tarzan repeated. Jane then said, “And you? You?” to which he replied, “Tarzan, Tarzan.” • Have you heard the quote attributed to the French philosopher Voltaire? – “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Although attributed to Voltaire, this quotation was actually that of his biographer Evelyn Beatrice Hall in her 1906 book, The Friends of Voltaire. Voltaire actually did say, “Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so, too” in his 1763 “Essay on Tolerance.” It’s thought that he also wrote in a letter to a colleague: “I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write.” • We all know that “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” but not everyone realizes that the correct quotation is “Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, nor hell a fury like a woman scorned,” penned by English poet William Congreve in his 1697 work, “The Mourning Bride.” • The sultry 1930s diva Mae West is often quoted as saying, “Come up and see me sometime.” In the 1933 movie “She Done Him Wrong,” West, in her role as Lady Lou, utters, “Why don’t you come up sometime and see me?” Continued next page

STRANGE BUT TRUE

by Samantha Weaver ● Those who study such things say that penguins are so well insulated that, in general, they have a harder time staying cool than they do staying warm. ● You’ve probably never wondered how to categorize the dill pickle, but some people have. Is it a fruit? Hard to say. The cucumber is, technically, a fruit -- part of the gourd family -- so it would seem that a pickle is, too. MISQUOTES (continued): • Diehard Trekkies will know that Captain James T. Kirk never said, “Beam me up, Scotty!” in any of the 80 episodes of the original “Star Trek” series, which aired from 1966 to 1969. The closest Captain Kirk came to that phrase was in the 1968 episode “Gamesters of Triskelion,” when he exclaimed, “Beam us up, Mr. Scott!” The animated “Star Trek” series, which ran for two seasons in 1973 – 1974, did have the line, “Beam us up, Scotty!” and the 1986 movie “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home included, “Scotty, beam me up.” The original series’ Mr. Scott was played by actor James Doohan, who entitled his 1996 biography Beam Me Up, Scotty! • The well-known phrase “A rose by any other name smells just as sweet” has its origins in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” But the actual quote reads, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet.” • Speaking of Shakespeare, when we see images of witches stirring a cauldron, the phrase “Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble” comes to mind. The correct phrase, from Act 4, Scene 1 of “Macbeth,” is actually 263 Jacolyn Dr NW, “Double, double, toil and trouble.” Fans of the rock group Led Zeppelin will recognize the words in the first verse of “Stairway to Heaven”, “There’s a lady who’s sure, all that glitters is gold.” The chorus in the Smash Mouth song “All Star” also includes the phrase “All that glitters is gold.” In actuality, this is another Shakespeare misquote that reads correctly, “All that glisters is not gold,” spoken by the Prince of Morocco in “The Merchant of Venice.”

Cedar Rapids Community Concerts 2016 2017 Season!

The Cedar Rapids Community

Concert Association has a long history of providing exceptional entertainment at a great price to Cedar Rapids and the surrounding community. Now in its 86th season, the CRCCA began in 1930 as a new way to offer top-name entertainers to smaller cities – rather than hiring the act and then trying to sell enough tickets to pay for it, community concert associations would sell memberships and then use those proceeds to secure a full season of concerts in advance. 5 Live Concerts for only $45.00. All concerts are at the Paramount Theatre in Cedar Rapids, IA. The season will start Friday Sept. 9th, 2016 at 7:30pm with: VICTORIA BANKS... “Country” The following four concerts are next. Wednesday Sept. 21st, 2016 @ 7:30pm with the BARBARY COAST DIXIELAND followed by: FIR ‘2 TENORS” SUPER! They will appear on Monday Nov. 21st, 2016 @7:30pm On Sunday March 5th, 2017 @ 2:30pm FRANK & VINNY “DUELING GUITARS” will be start the 2017 season followed by TRIBUTE TO THE KING.. ● On May 30, 1911, Ray Harroun drives his single-seater Marmon Wasp to victory in the inaugural Indianapolis 500 auto race. Harroun completed the 500-mile race in 6 hours and 42 minutes, averaging almost 75 mph. ● On May 31, 1929, after two years of friendly negotiations, Ford Motor Company signs a landmark agreement to produce cars in the Soviet Union, which in 1928 had only 20,000 cars and a single truck factory. ● On June 5, 1933, the United States goes off the gold standard, a monetary system in which currency is backed by gold. All persons owning gold coin, bullion or certificates were required to deliver it to the Federal Reserve for the set price of $20.67 per ounce. Americans could not legally own gold again until 1974. ● On June 3, 1940, determined to wreck France’s economy and military, the German air force bombs Paris, killing 254 people. Most of the victims were civilians, including schoolchildren. ● On June 2, 1953, Queen Elizabeth II, age 27, is formally crowned monarch of the United Kingdom at London’s Westminster Abbey in a ceremony steeped in traditions that date back a millennium. ● On June 1, 1967, the Beatles release “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” regarded by many as the greatest album in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. Upon hearing the album for the first time, Bob Dylan told Beatle Paul McCartney: “Oh, I get it, you don't want to be cute anymore.”

much smaller, with males averaging a length of 5 feet and females at about 4.5 feet. The tail accounts for about half of an alligator’s length. • An American alligator has a life expectancy in the wild of nearly 50 years. • The menacing-looking mouth of an American alligator holds between 74 and 80 teeth at a time, but it might go through 2,000 to 3,000 teeth over its lifetime. • Although they seem to have a reputation for attacking humans, alligators are actually quite solitary and very rarely do they go after humans, usually only when provoked or when protecting their young. Their diet consists of fish, turtles, snakes, birds, and small mammals. Occasionally they eat other alligators. • An alligator’s jaws can clamp shut with enough force to break a person’s arm. But the muscles that open its mouth are very weak, so much so that a man can hold a full-grown alligator’s mouth closed with one hand. And although they move very quickly through water, alligators are slow-moving on land. • A female alligator will lay up to 50 eggs at a time, keeping them warm in a nest of rotting vegetation. The temperature of that nest will determine the gender of her offspring. Oddly enough, if the eggs are incubated over 93 degrees F, the embryos develop into males. Females are the result of temperatures below 86 degrees F, and between 86 and 93 degrees F, an embryo can develop into either gender. About 8 out of 10 baby alligators will be eaten by bobcats, snakes, otters, large fish, raccoons, and other alligators. • One of the main differences between alligators and crocodiles is their environment. Alligators dwell in fresh water, such as ponds, rivers, wetlands, lakes, and swamps, while crocodiles make their home in salt water. An alligator’s nostrils point upward, so they can breathe while the rest of the body is submerged in water. • Although there are about five million American alligators in the southeastern United States, they were once nearly extinct. Years of hunters seeking the valuable hides landed alligators on the endangered species list. When the U.S. fish & wildlife Service prohibited the trade of hides, alligators made such a comeback that they were removed from the list in 1987.

Senior News By Karen Huber

Research found that the majority (57%) of surveyed North American seniors are taking four or more prescription medications daily, with more than one-fourth (27%) taking six or more. Nearly 20 percent of those surveyed seniors taking five or more prescription medications have reportedly experienced challenges in managing their medication regimen, including keeping track of which medications they have taken and when. These factors appeared to have increased as both age and the number of prescribed medications increased. Such medication management uncertainty could put seniors at higher risk for a medical issue or emergency due to incorrect dosage or adverse medication interactions. One of 10 surveyed seniors had unintentionally made a mistake when taking medications, which can equate to devastating effects. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 100,000 older adults end up in the hospital each year because of an adverse drug event. A majority (77%; 66% of those age 80+) of these seniors overall agreed that the ability to remain independent depends on one’s ability to manage a complicated medication regimen. However, overall, seniors feel the ability to do this effectively is based on individual abilities. One-fourth of surveyed seniors (24%) do not feel fully confident that other seniors are taking their medications correctly, further underscoring this problem. In regards to communication, survey results show that even though half of seniors don’t want to burden their family with medication issues, almost all of the surveyed seniors (91%) feel very comfortable discussing their medications with a family member or loved one. The majority of respondents felt communication with family members increased their self-confidence that medications are being taken properly. They additionally felt that proactive communication also helped make their families feel more confident about their senior loved ones’ medication management abilities. To provide families with resources to help identify potential pitfalls facing seniors regarding their medications, a new network has been introduced called: Let’s Talk about RxSM. This public education program will help family caregivers begin the conversation about why this topic is such an important issue and drive them and their senior loved ones to a number of resources. Among these resources is a free solutions guide to help family caregivers understand the potential risks associated with this rising problem and provide tools that can help an older adult manage these issues in the home.

TOOLS 4 LIFE BY DR. JIM COYLE Two Acts Have Changed My World I can’t tell you how many times somebody’s story has stopped me dead in my tracks and caused me to redirect my day, my week, my year, and my life. Our fast paced drive through mentality and approach to life has disconnected us with so many people and so many things. In my personal journey, I have implemented a couple daily actions to keep me connected with things that are much bigger and more important than the things I am held hostage to. The first thing is I ask for one Divine appointment a day. This is an appointment from heavens throne that I have no control over. This is an appointment that I have to be flexible enough to see and respond to. The second thing is to have at least one focused, meaningful, and intentional conversation. This is something I do have control over. I have come to realize that these conversations feed the soul and are the first to escape us when time is scarce. By implementing these 2 daily requests, my life is richer and fuller than I could ever imagine. One request I have no control over and the other I am in total control of.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Creating a Turtle Habitat

VETERANS POST by Freddy Groves

Jobs Via Joining Forces

Veteran unemployment isn’t as high as it used to be, down to 5.8 percent in 2015 from a high of 12.2 percent in 2011. It’s likely the Joining Forces program is at least partially responsible for that. In 2011, first lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden challenged civilian companies to hire 100,000 veterans and spouses in an employment and training launch. Companies responded by hiring or training more than 1 million. One year ago, that same initiative saw numerous companies pledging to hire 90,000 veterans in the technology and energy fields over the next five years. Fast-forward to now: Forty companies participating in a renewal of the program have committed to hiring 110,000 veterans and to training 60,000 veterans and spouses in the next five years, mostly in technology, aerospace and telecommunications. Let’s see where some of those jobs are: JPMorgan Chase will hire 1,000 veterans over five years. It’s going to commit to spending $13.8 million through 2020 to

support the Institute for Veterans and Military Families. Since 2011 they’ve helped 2,400 earn information-technology certificates. Amazon has hired 10,000 veterans and spouses since 2013 and is committing to hiring 25,000 more in the next five years. In addition, it will train another 10,000 in cloud computing. The aerospace industry (including General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems and Boeing) will hire 30,000 veterans in total. The big phone companies (T-Mobile and Verizon, AT&T and Sprint) will hire 25,000 more. Accenture and USAA will hire 5,000 each. Dell, Tesla, GoDaddy, Intuit, Seagate and Hewlett-Packard will hire as well. Multiple companies will provide training and certification. Get your resume ready. For the full list of hiring companies, go online to whitehouse.gov and look for the press release dated May 5, 2016. To read the full reports and keep track of new ones as they come in, check www.va.gov/oig. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I saw a news story about a man who built a miniature “Jurassic Park” landscape for his pet tortoise to play in. I have a little box turtle named “Darlene” that I got for my birthday, and I’m wondering, can I make something like that for my turtle? -- Sarah J., via email DEAR SARAH: Turtle and tortoise owners can get pretty creative with their pets’ enclosures, and it can be fun to do. To make it fun for turtles and tortoises too, any enclosure has two important requirements: It needs to meet their basic needs, and it must be safe for them. If you live in a climate that is not native to your turtle’s species, you’ll need to have an indoor and an outdoor enclosure. The indoor one should have the most ideal climate possible for your turtle, with steady temperature and proper humidity, a couple of places in which to hide, and a sunny corner (or a heat lamp) where she can go to warm up if necessary. An outdoor enclosure gives your turtle a place to roam on warm, sunny days. It can and should be bigger than Darlene’s indoor enclosure, but ideally should be covered with mesh or wire to prevent predators from getting in. You’ll also need to build walls around the enclosure so Darlene can’t see out. It should have some nice flat rocks to climb up on, a shallow pool of water to rest in, a few shady spots and plenty of places to burrow in and hide. Always have fresh drinking water available and give Darlene things to snack on, like fresh greens, grasses and a little bit of fruit. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
