July 17 has been designated Disneyland Day, commemorating Opening Day of the original theme park on that day in 1955. In honor of the occasion, Tidbits studies up on this famous attraction in Anaheim, California. • A simple carousel was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s dream of Disneyland. Every Sunday, Disney took his two daughters to play at Los Angeles’ Griffith Park, and he sat on the park bench and watched. As he sat, he noted that most parents had nothing to do, and envisioned a place where both children and their parents could have fun together. • Disney’s ambition was for an eight-acre park called Mickey Mouse Park, located near his studios in Burbank. He planned themed areas throughout the park, and as his vision grew, he soon saw that eight acres was not nearly large enough. In 1953, Disney hired the Stanford Research Institute to search for a 100-acre site within the Los Angeles metropolitan area that was accessible by freeway. The company soon located a 160-acre orange grove in semi-rural Orange County near Anaheim. • Walt borrowed against his life insurance, sold his second house, and along with his brother Roy mortgaged everything they owned to raise the funds to build Disneyland. turn the page for more!

• ABC TV guaranteed a $6 million loan in exchange for Walt’s pledge to produce a weekly television show for them. • Construction began on July 21, 1954, with the park divided into five sections with 18 attractions. Main Street was at the front of the park, a turn-of-the-century city Main Street. Adventureland was to be an “exotic tropical place,” complete with jungles. Frontierland would allow visitors to experience America’s pioneer days. The goal of Fantasyland was to “make dreams come true,” complete with princesses and flying fairies, while Tomorrowland offered a glimpse into the “marvels of the future.” The parking lot was designed with 15,167 spaces. Walt’s “magical little park” had turned into a $17 million theme park. • Just shy of a year later, Disneyland held its opening day. Its first day was to be limited to by-invitation-only guests for a preview of flying elephants, giant teacups, moon rockets, and a castle. Six thousand invitations were sent to Disney studio workers, the park’s construction workers, the press, and officials of company sponsors. Unfortunately, because of counterfeit tickets, an additional 22,000 people entered the park. • 53-year-old Walt Disney dedicated the park in the morning, then got busy with ABC filming a 90-minute live special, hosted by TV and movie personalities Art Linkletter, Ronald Reagan, and Bob Cummings, a broadcast that would be watched by 90 million people. • The day was plagued with mishaps, including a 7-mile freeway backup. A heat wave caused temperatures to approach 110 degrees, accompanied by a plumbers’ strike which left most of the park’s water fountains and rest rooms out of order. Asphalt laid the night before became soft and women’s shoes sunk into the tar. A gas leak temporarily closed Fantasyland. Yet nothing could stop the opening to the public the following day. Why was Cinderella so very bad at soccer?
Because she was always running away from the ball, kept losing her shoes, and she had a pumpkin for a coach!

• The entrance fee was $1.00, about $6.50 in today’s dollars. Roy Disney purchased ticket number one, but the first visitor to buy an entrance ticket was David MacPherson, ticket #2. Three attractions were free, but individual tickets for 18 rides ranged from 10 cents to 35 cents each. (Current ticket prices start at $95.00 per day.) • To avoid overcrowding, Walt Disney limited daily attendance to 20,000. It took just seven weeks for the park to welcome its one-millionth guest. Ten years after opening day, more than 50 million visitors had passed through the gates. • Shortly after Disneyland’s opening, Walt Disney was heard to say, “We’re gonna kick ourselves for not buying everything within a radius of ten miles around here.” • Disney’s weekly television series guaranteed to ABC in exchange for the $6 million loan debuted on October 27, 1955. • The Mark Twain riverboat seen in Frontierland sailed for the first time four days before the park opened, carrying guests at a private party celebrating Walt and Lillian Disney’s 30th wedding anniversary. On Opening Day, with the mad rush of uninvited guests, the ride became overcrowded and nearly capsized. It seems that nobody had established its maximum safe passenger capacity. ALWAYS FREE

• Since Disneyland’s opening day, folks have been getting motion sickness at the Mad Tea Party, a ride featuring 18 spinning tea cups. The inspiration for this attraction came from a scene in Disney’s 1951 animated film, Alice in Wonderland, when the Mad Hatter and friends celebrated with an Unbirthday Party. During the first two years after opening, the tea cups had no brakes or clutches, and there was no limit on how fast they could spin. • Although the flying Dumbo elephants are a long-time favorite at Disneyland, they weren’t there on Opening Day. The original 10 elephants, based on Disney’s 1941 film Dumbo, didn’t debut until three months after the park opened. When former U.S. President Harry S. Truman visited Disneyland in 1957, he declined a ride on the revolving pachyderms. It wasn’t due to motion sickness – the Democrat didn’t want to associate with an elephant, the symbol of the Republican Party. One of the original Dumbo’s can be viewed at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. • The Matterhorn bobsleds were also not an original Disneyland feature. The steel roller coaster ride opened on June 14, 1959, the same day the Monorail and the Submarine Voyage made their debut. Walt Disney conceived the idea while in the Alps of Switzerland filming Third Man on the Mountain. Inspired by the beauty of the Matterhorn, he sent a postcard of the mountain to his Disneyland architect Vic Greene with the words, “Vic, build this. Walt.” The park’s mountain was built to 1/100th scale of the original, 147 feet versus the 14,700 feet of the original. • The Submarine Voyage was open from 1959 until 1998, and simulated an undersea voyage through coral reefs, mysterious caves, and a graveyard of sunken ships. A portion of the ride imitated the 1958 voyage of the nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus as it sailed under the Arctic Ocean’s polar ice cap. From 1965 to 1967, female employees dressed in mermaid costumes sunbathed and performed synchronized swimming stunts in the lagoon surrounding the attraction, receiving $1.65 per hour for their efforts. After several complained of health issues related to the subs’ diesel exhaust fumes, this feature was discontinued.

Let’s get hopping by taking a look at the kangaroo, the most common member of the marsupial group. • Marsupials are distinctive in that they carry their young around in pouches. Besides kangaroos, the group includes Tasmanian devils, wallabies, and pademelos. Although kangaroos give live birth, the gestation period is very short, only 21 to 38 days, but as soon as the offspring is born (up to four at one time), they climb from the birth canal into the pouch where the mother’s mammary glands are located. There they will continue to develop for several months. At birth, the tiny hairless kangaroo is smaller than a bee, ranging from 0.2 to 0.9 inches in size. • The four different species of kangaroos all reside in Australia – the red kangaroo, the eastern, the western gray, and the antilopine kangaroo. The red kangaroo is the largest, as well as the largest of all marsupials. Its length from head to rump is between 3.25 and 5.25 feet, with the tail adding another 40 inches or so. Its weight can reach 200 lbs.. The muskyrat kangaroo measures just 8 inches long, weighing just 12 oz.. Its tail contributes another 6 inches. • Of course, the most familiar characteristic is their method of transportation – hopping! They are the only large animals that do so. One hop usually measures a distance of 15 feet and kangaroos have the ability to jump up to three times their height, yet the red kangaroo can leap an amazing 25 feet up to 10 feet in the air. • The kangaroo’s top speed can reach close to 40 mph, with normal “cruising” speed about 15 mph. In addition to their strong hind legs, they also use their muscular tail as a means of pushing off the ground. • Oddly enough, kangaroos can only move their back legs together at the same time and are incapable of moving them individually. In fact, if one leg is seriously injured, the kangaroo will probably die because it cannot move about freely. However, when a kangaroo is swimming, it can kick each leg independently. • The habitat of kangaroos varies by species. The tiny musky-rat kangaroo beds down in little nests in Queensland’s rainforests. Gray kangaroos like Australian and Tasmanian forests, while the antilopine likes the eucalyptus woodlands. Their diet consists of grasses, flowers, leaves, ferns, moss, and the occasional insect. Their digestive system is like that of a cow, regurgitating their food and rechewing it before digesting it. • Kangaroos don’t live very long in the wild, only about four to six years. In captivity, their lifespan increases to upwards of 20 years. They have poor eyesight, with a large number hopping about completely blind. • Do you know your kangaroo lingo? The adult male can be called by three names, a buck, boomer, or jack. The females are known as does, flyers, or jills. The youngsters are referred to as joeys, and a group of roos is called a mob or troop, usually numbering 50 or more.

Helping Hand TOOLS 4 LIFE BY DR. JIM COYLE
Lesson from Hawaii
For those of you that have had the privilege of visiting the volcano islands of Hawaii, there is an interesting phenomenon. On one side of the island is dark lava and in some cases hot flowing lava. It is barren and nonnegotiable for travel. There are boundaries that prohibit visitors. There is no plant growth and the terrain is sharp and rigid. I have walked on hot rocks that have burned through the souls of my shoes. On the other side of the island is paradise with the ocean front properties, crystal beaches, and tropical gardens that provide shade, nourishment, and sacred pools with waterfalls. The same volcano has two sides to it just as the voices and choices of life. There are two barks that are competing for our thoughts and actions. The soft comforting bark is the good wolf. The loud threatening bark is the bad wolf. The wolf that wins is the wolf we feed. The importance of guiding our thoughts and navigating our days could make the difference between paradise and hell. What bark am I listening to?

MORE DISNEY FACTS • Sleeping Beauty Castle is based on Bavaria, Germany’s 19th-century Neuschwanstein Castle. • Main Street, U.S.A. featured Merlin’s Magic Shop from Opening Day until 1983. A 15-year-old teen named Steve Martin got his first job there in 1960, where he remained for three years. The comedian credits his employment there as helping him developing his performance skills. • The term “animatronics” was coined in 1963 when Disneyland’s Polynesianthemed Enchanted Tiki Room opened, filled with 225 robotic singing, talking, and dancing birds. • Since May of 1966, visitors to Disneyland’s Fantasyland have been taking a boat ride through “It’s a Small World,” an attraction with a world-brotherhood theme and a song that most have trouble getting out of their brain. Singing and dancing dolls are dressed in native garb of each nation. The attraction had its debut on April 22, 1964 at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, and was shipped to Disneyland at the Fair’s conclusion. • Walt Disney kept his chain-smoking habit out of the public eye, never allowing himself to be photographed with a cigarette. He also never smoked around children. After feeling poorly for several months, in November of 1966, he entered the hospital for leg and neck pain. It was a busy time for Disney, with construction for Florida’s Walt Disney World having already begun. Disney was quickly diagnosed with lung cancer, and passed away just six weeks later at age 65. It would be nearly five more years until the Florida theme park was completed. • Prior to 1985, during the off-season, Disneyland was closed every Monday and Tuesday. Since then, it has been open daily, year round, with the exception of the national day of mourning following President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, following the severe 1994 Northridge earthquake, and in 2001 at the time of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. • The boat ride through the “Pirates of the Caribbean” attraction was personally supervised by Walt Disney. He had originally envisioned it as a walk-through wax museum, but after the success of “It’s a Small World’s” boat concept, he adjusted his designs. “Pirates” was the last ride Walt Disney would be involved with. It was under construction when he passed away and opened in 1967, three months after his death. A new section of the park, New Orleans Square, was built at a cost of $15 million, ironically the same cost as the real Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The cost of the Pirates attraction came in at $8 million. The Spanish-style building was built with a 3,000 square foot apartment on the second floor, intended for entertaining and relaxing by Walt and his brother Roy. Following Walt’s death, the space never served its original purpose. • The Disney-produced Pirates of the Caribbean film series, based on the theme park’s attraction, began in 2003 with The Curse of the Black Pearl. Three more films followed, with the series grossing over $3.7 billion worldwide.

Check Out The Senior Center What’s new at your local senior center? If you haven’t been there recently (or ever), you might be surprised. Across the country, many towns are increasing the offerings at senior centers, making them places we can go for more than just bingo. Here are a few things you might find at your local center: computer classes; yoga or tai chi; low-cost or free lunch; workout classes; guest speakers on a variety of topics such as health, wealth and travel; golf trips; dance classes; help with managing health conditions; writing groups (some of them even publish their own work in a book every year); information on job seeking if you want to go back to work. And more Free flu shots. Language classes. Nutritionist and cooking classes. Planned trips and activities. Blood pressure and vision screenings. Balance classes. Board and card games. Genealogy and first-aid instruction. Exercise bikes and treadmills. Reading programs. Pizza night. Oil and watercolor painting classes. Information on social programs and finding assistance. Not every center will have all of those activities and services, but you won’t know unless you ask. Call your local senior center and ask them to send you a monthly calendar of activities. Think about sampling a few of them. If you don’t drive, ask about transportation. Some of us don’t feel especially social as we age, preferring to be alone a lot of the time. If nothing else, we don’t want to hang around a bunch of old people. Consider that “senior” can be anywhere from age 50 on up. A regular class at the senior center might help change your perception and you might even enjoy it (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Tournament of Drums marches back to Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids By Cindy Hadish The sights and sounds of high-caliber drum and bugle corps will rock Cedar Rapids, as the Tournament of Drums returns to Kingston Stadium on Friday, July 29. Following a highly successful come-back on the Drum Corps International circuit in 2015, the show promises to be even more exciting this year. Among the corps in competition, the lineup boasts four DCI Open Class finalists, including last year’s champion, Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets, and runner-up, Blue Devils B. Shadow, DCI’s newest member from Oregon, Wis., also will be among the corps competing at Tournament of Drums, so fans in Cedar Rapids will be among the first to see this up-and-coming corps. An all-volunteer group resurrected Tournament of Drums in 2015 to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Emerald Knights Drum & Bugle STEAMBOATS (continued):
• In 1802, at the urging of Robert Livingston, U.S. minister to France, Fulton turned his attention to steamboats. After two steamboat trials in France, one a failure and one a success, Fulton returned to America in 1806 and proceeded to build his famed steamboat the Clermont that successfully plied the Hudson River in New Parade spectators are reflected in a first bass drum as the Colt Cadets York. The Clermont’s significant trip Drum & Bugle Corps marches through Czech Village in Cedar of was from New York to Albany, a distance Rapids. The Colt Cadets will be among the corps performing approximately 150 miles. The (photo/Cindy ClermontHadish) left Friday, July 29, at the Tournament of Drums. New York on August 17, 1807, and completed the voyage in 30 hours, including an overnight stop. • The first voyage by the Clermont was met by the public with suspicion. Many referred to the boat as “Fulton’s Folly” due to its unusually long length and the smoke and fire associated with the vessel’s newfangled steam engine. Many thought it would blow up or sink on its first voyage; they were wrong! In fact, because Fulton wisely paid attention to passenger comfort, the Clermont became a very profitable vessel for transporting passengers to destinations on the Hudson River. Fulton subsequently formed and led a company offering services on six major rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.

• Following Fulton’s success, steamboats became a prime transporter of passengers and goods across the country. For example, in the steamboat port of New Orleans, 20 steamboat arrivals in 1814 increased to a whopping 1,200 arrivals by 1834. • The steamboat era in the United States continued until the 1870s, when railroads started supplanting the steamboat as the preferred transporter of passengers and goods.
Corps. The corps is no longer active, but alumni and supporters came together with Cedar Rapids schools to host the event, along with the Colt Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps of Dubuque. Tournament of Drums attracted an estimated 2,000 spectators in 2015, with people of all ages in attendance. The show will offer another family-friendly, affordable night out this year. In addition, the young adults who compete in corps from across the nation are treated to Cedar Rapids hospitality. Members of drum and bugle corps typically stay at schools as they travel across the country, competing in show after show. Neighbors and band students, particularly, are invited to watch the corps’ hornline, drum and percussion sections and color guard as they rehearse the day of the performance. Last year’s show offered an opportunity not only to bring drum and bugle corps competition back to Cedar Rapids, but former members of Emerald Knights, as

STRANGE BUT TRUE
by Samantha Weaver ● When you were growing up, did kids call each other “chicken” to insult each other’s bravery? In all likelihood, the answer is yes. That word has been used since the 14th century to insult those considered to be cowardly. ● It was once against the law in some places -- England, for example -- for a man to marry his brother’s widow. It was considered to be an incestuous relationship. ● On a per-capita basis, Canada is the most educated place in the world; more than half of the country’s residents have earned at least one college degree. ● According to a study conducted by researchers at Emory University, heterosexual couples who spend more than $20,000 on their wedding were three and a half times as likely to have shorter marriages than those who were more frugal. This principle extends to the ring, too; men who spent more than $2,000 on an engagement ring were more likely to end up divorced. Did you know that maintaining proper pressure in your automobile’s tires can improve your gas mileage by about 3 percent? You can also get better mileage by keeping the speedometer at 60 miles per hour. Every 10 miles per hour above 60 compares to adding about 50 cents to the price per gallon of gas.
