TIDBITS® LISTENS TO SOME by Kathy Wolfe Most of us have a favorite singer or band from whom we eagerly await a new song or CD. But what about those groups who brought us a hit and were never heard from again? This week, Tidbits remembers some of those artists who hit the charts once and only once. • The term “one-hit wonder” usually refers to performers who had only one Billboard Top 40 hit single, or had one song that overshadowed all their other work. • A fictional band recorded one of pop’s most successful songs, “Sugar, Sugar,” in 1969. Ranked as the number one song of the year, it sold six million copies and records were even placed on the back of Post Super Sugar Crisp cereal boxes. The group The Archies was made up of cartoon characters Archie Andrews, Reggie Mantle, and Jughead Jones for an animated TV series, but the music was recorded by session musicians, featuring Ron Dante on vocals. Dante was also the co-producer of Barry Manilow’s first nine albums and sang back-up on many of Manilow’s hits. Dante had another one-hit wonder as the sole singer in the pop group The Cuff Links. In 1969, as “Sugar, Sugar” was sitting at the top of the charts, the million-copy seller “Tracy” was released by Dante, who used his voice in 16 dub-overs. “Tracy” spent 12 weeks on the U.S. chart. • The British pop group Edison Lighthouse was named for the Eddystone Lighthouse off the southwest coast of England. Best known for 1970’s million-selling record “Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes,” the band was just a group of studio musicians that had been hurriedly put together. The tune enjoyed a brief revival when it was featured in the 2001 film Shallow Hal, starring Jack Black, with Gwyneth Paltrow in the role of Rosemary. • Rolling Stone magazine has ranked 1970’s “Spirit in the Sky” as number 333 on their list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” Written, recorded, and released by Norman Greenbaum in late 1969, the song spent 15 weeks in the Top 100, with sales of over two million copies. Greenbaum never hit the charts again, but today, Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Angels use the song to introduce their starting lineup at their Anaheim stadium. • Singer Bobby McFerrin is a tentime Grammy Award winner, but his chart-topper “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” is probably the only song any of us remember. The song is entirely a cappella, using no instruments at all, the first of its kind to reach Number One on the Billboard chart. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA –Monday February 1, 2016 – The Linn County Blues Society (LCBS) and the Isle of Iowa Parrot Head Club (IIPHC) announce their sixteenth Annual Blues ‘n’ Buffett Chili Challenge. The event will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2016, 1- 4 p.m. at the Cedar Rapids Marriott Hotel Located at 1200 Collins Rd NE. The Chili Challenge is a friendly competition between the two clubs to raise money for local Cedar Rapids charities. Proceeds from this year’s event will go to the H.D. Youth Center and Community Health Free Clinic of Cedar Rapids. Both organizations continue to have critical needs in operational support. IIPHC charity - Community Health Free Clinic of Cedar Rapids. The clinic’s mission is to provide medical, dental and prescription care for the uninsured and underserved population of Eastern Iowa through model community partnerships

The public is encouraged to attend, taste the various chilies (28 total including 8 from local restaurants) and vote for their favorite. Admission is $10, which includes tasting of the chilies and five vote tickets. Children ages 6 and under will be admitted for free when accompanied by an adult; and admission for ages 65 and older is $5. The club receiving the most People’s Choice votes will receive a plaque and their club’s charity will receive 51% of the proceeds from the event. The runner-up club will receive 49% of the proceeds for their charity. There will be Celebrity Judges, including local television and radio personalities, to taste and vote on the Overall Best Chili as well as Best Chili in one of four categories. The club receiving a majority of votes for the Best Chili from the judges receives a traveling trophy and bragging rights for their club.
LCBS charity – H.D.Youth Center of Cedar Rapids. The center is a non-profit organization in downtown Cedar Rapids, designed to get kids off the street and encourage a positive attitude, academic progress, and promote a drug-free environment. It was founded by Henry Davison in 1997. The center also serves breakfast for the homeless and those in need, many children’s events, as well as several special holiday meals throughout the year.
A Silent Auction will again be featured at this year’s event. At press time, some of the items up for auction include numerous autographed sports memorabilia, MLB tickets baseball games, overnight stays at area hotels/ casino’s, and unique craft items. Many other great items in a variety of price ranges will be available on the day of the event. Payment is expected at the time of purchase; cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted. Monies raised from the auction will be included in the donations being made to the charities.
Since 2001, members of each club have challenged one another with their finest chili recipes and with colorful decorations and costumes. In the first year, nearly $540 was raised; since then has grown every year. Last years event raised $8,325.00 for the selected charities and in the fifteen years of the event’s existence, over $85,000 has been raised and donated to local charities.

--Aging in place. Those are words dear to the hearts of many low-income seniors who fear having to move away from home when they need services. The department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is about to give $15 million in grants to organizations that can provide services to help seniors stay in their homes. Called “Supportive Services Demonstration for Elderly Households in HUD-Assisted Multifamily Housing,” it would work like this: Existing HUD-assisted senior developments can apply for threeyear grants if they agree to provide services for aging in place, transitions to institutional care, housing stability, well-being monitoring and utilization of healthcare, such as emergencyroom visits. The goal would be to avoid institutional care, the need for skilled nursing and expensive trips to the emergency room. Developments will be required to have a full-time, onsite service coordinator and a part-time, onsite wellness nurse to make assessments and coordinate care and support services. The program would be a test to see if initial plans work and to evaluate the outcomes of the demonstration. A model program was started in Vermont a few years ago, and there are many success stories to show the effectiveness: An isolated senior who missed doctor appointments can now get rides and has learned to get around independently; another with physical disabilities has been given referrals to physical therapists; a depressed senior was recruited as a volunteer and has become more social, and so much more. These are the types of services we need if we’re to stay in our homes. Those development owners who want to apply have until April 18 to do so. See www.grants.gov, and look for FR-5900-N-22.
