TIDBITS® STUDIES

THE ELEMENTS

319.389.1999 · Cell Phone www.SteveEmig.com

by Janet Spencer

In 1773 French chemist Antoine Lavoisier was the first person to define an element as a substance which could not be broken down into simpler components. Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleev was the first to arrange the elements into the periodic table. Come along with Tidbits as we consider the elements!

THE PERIODIC TABLE

• Elements on the periodic table are listed in order of the number of protons they have, known as the atomic number. There are currently 118 elements listed on the periodic table. Of these, about 98 are found in nature. The rest are manmade, usually involving either a nuclear reactor or a particle accelerator. • In the periodic table, the names of the elements are abbreviated using one or two letters. Some abbreviations make sense: hydrogen is H, oxygen is O, and carbon is C, and cobalt is Co. Copper, which might sensibly be abbreviated “Co” is instead “Cu.” Why? Because elements that had Latin names were abbreviated according to those names: copper in Latin is “cuprum”; gold is “aurum” (Au) and iron is “ferrum” (Fe). • “Oxygen” comes from the Greek words “oxys” meaning “acid” and “genes” meaning “producer” in the mistaken belief that oxygen was a component of all acids. turn the page for more!

Together... we CAN make a difference!

• The planet Uranus was discovered in 1781, and in 1789 a scientist named uranium (U) after the planet in spite of the fact that there is no uranium on Uranus. Neptunium (Np) was named after Neptune and plutonium (Pu) was named after Pluto. Polonium (Po), a radioctive element, was named for Marie Curie’s native Poland. Radium (Ra) was named for the fact that it radiates and glows. • In 1949 when scientists working at the University of California Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley, California discovered a new element, they named it “berkelium” after the city. They hoped that the chemical symbol would be “Bm” because the element had been such a “stinker” to find. However, the symbol for the new element became “Bk” instead. Berkelium is a radioactive metal which can only be produced inside nuclear reactors. Only a single gram of this element has been produced in the U.S. since 1967.

BUILDING BLOCKS

Become a member today! www.arceci.org Mercury is not allowed on airplanes by the TSA because it combines so readily with aluminum, which forms the basic structure of aircraft. Airplanes are made of aluminum because it's lightweight, durable and it does not rust or decay. However, when mercury comes into contact with aluminum, it forms an amalgam which causes aluminum to corrode, just like how US Cars rust.

• Our bodies are largely composed of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen. Phosphorus is needed in bones and in DNA. Sulphur is needed for proteins to form. Iron transports oxygen in the blood stream. Calcium is required for bones and teeth. Sodium and potassium carry electrical pulses in the nerves. Magnesium governs over 300 chemical reactions in the body. These elements form the basic building blocks of life; about fifteen others are required in trace amounts for life to continue. • Carbon is named after the Latin word “carbo” meaning coal. It’s the fourth most abundant element in the Universe after hydrogen, helium, and oxygen. Carbon atoms are able to form very long, very stable chains with more types of other atoms than any other substance. This is why life on earth is “carbon-based.” (Continued next page)

• Chlorine is a poisonous and corrosive gas but when you combine it with sodium it turns into salt which is essential for life. Carbon and oxygen are also essential for life, but when you combine the two you get carbon monoxide which is deadly. Carbon and nitrogen combine to form basic building blocks of all organic matter, but the two can also be combined to form cyanide, a fatal poison. Hydrogen is extremely flammable and oxygen is required for burning, but when you combine them you have water which puts out fires. Uranium is one of the heaviest elements, but when it decays, it produces helium, which is one of the lightest elements. • The simplest element in the universe, hydrogen, happens to be the most abundant. The second simplest element, helium, is the second most abundant. But the streak ends there. The third simplest element is lithium (the lightest metal), which is not the third most abundant element in the Universe. The third-place spot belongs to oxygen, which is the 8th simplest element.

Ga IS FOR GALLIUM

• A French scientist named Lecoq de Boisbaudran discovered a new element in 1875, which he named gallium. He claimed the name sprang from the Latin name for France, which is “Gallia” but others accused him of naming it after himself, since his first name “Lecoq” meaning “rooster” is “gallus” in Latin. Gallium is a metal that is solid at room temperature but which melts at 84 degrees F, meaning you’ll be holding a puddle of silver-colored liquid if you hold it in your hand. As a practical joke, scientists would mold spoons out of gallium and hand them to unsuspecting people when serving tea. The spoon would dissolve into a puddle in the bottom of their teacup. • Fritz Haber was a German scientist who researched nitrogen prior to World War I. He discovered how to “fix” nitrogen so that it can be used as a fertilizer in soil, resulting in vastly improved harvests. For his work he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1918. The irony, however, is that Haber wasn’t interested in improving the human condition when he made his discoveries. He was actually working on figuring out an easy way to gas people to death in warfare.

• Antimony is a silvery grey metallic element. Today it’s used as an alloy with lead and tin to make lead-acid batteries, solder, bullets, and cable. Long ago it was used as a laxative. Antimony pills cause violent digestive purging, but the pills pass through the digestive tract unchanged and could therefore be recovered and reused over and over again, giving it the name “the everlasting pill.” Some people conjecture that Mozart died as a result of taking too much antimony to combat a fever. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon painted his palace walls yellow using paint pigmented with a mixture of antimony and lead. Perhaps as a result of this toxic mixture, he soon went mad. When antimony is mixed with hydrofluoric acid, the combination produces an acid that is billions of times stronger than stomach acid and will eat through everything except the Teflonlined containers it’s stored in.

TOOLS 4 LIFE BY DR. JIM COYLE

The Power of One Degree

The power and influence of one degree can make the difference in the total outcome of a situation, an event, or circumstance. At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, water boils. The boiling water creates steam. Steam can power a locomotive. A morning cup of espresso also illustrates the power of steam. An espresso machine takes heated, pressurized water and releases it in a controlled way through coffee grounds to get that thick Italian drink. The use of steam vapor for cleaning works much the same way. Steam effectively cleans surfaces and kills viruses, bacteria and fungi. These are just a few examples of the power of one extra degree. Let’s carry this metaphor into our physical, emotional, and spiritual being. One choice and/or one small shift in an attitude can change the total outcome in the results of our day, month, year, and life. “Want to be happy for an hour? Eat a steak. Want to be happy for a day? Play golf. Want to be happy for a week? Go on a cruise. Want to be happy for a month? Buy a new car. Want to be happy for a year? Win the lottery. Want to be happy for a lifetime? Win a championship.” (Lou Holtz) Adding one degree to hot water can turn something that could be negative into something more powerful than we could ever imagine. Use your one degree and win a championship in your life.

The Cedar Rapids Community

Concert Association has a long history of providing exceptional entertainment at a great price to Cedar Rapids and the surrounding community. Now in its 86th season, the CRCCA began in 1930 as a new way to offer top-name entertainers to smaller cities – rather than hiring the act and then trying to sell enough tickets to pay for it, community concert associations would sell memberships and then use those proceeds to secure a full season of concerts in advance. 5 Live Concerts for only $50.00. All concerts are at the Paramount Theatre in Cedar Rapids, IA. The season started Friday Sept. 9th with Victoria Banks. The next concert will be: On Sunday March 5th, 2017 @ 2:30pm FRANK & VINNY “DUELING GUITARS” will start the 2017 season. MONEY

It’s Just A Penny

Lately there's been a movement to abolish the cent (penny). But as recently as 1935, the Roosevelt administration proposed minting coins worth as little as one-tenth of a cent. Today's article we'll look at the Great Depression sales tax tokens. As the Depression dragged on, state sales tax revenues became harder to collect, while at the same time, demand for state unemployment relief soared. In desperation, states turned to sales tax to make up the shortfall. Legislators felt even the poor could afford to pay an extra cent or two for each purchase. During the 30's, the sales tax rate was usually two percent - sometimes rates of one or even three percent were charged. But if a cent tax were charged on a purchase of only 10 cents, the rate would be 10 percent, not two percent. On a five-cent purchase, the rate would be 20 percent! So Congress considered authorizing coins smaller than a cent to enable sales tax to be paid more exactly. Congress finally declined, despite the urging of the Roosevelt administration, because differences in state tax rates would have made several mini-coins necessary. The states were left on their own. Twelve states issued sales tax tokens between 1935 and 1961 in values of one mil - or a tenth of a cent - one and a half mills, two mills, three mills and five mills. These tokens were made of aluminum, copper, brass, zinc, fiber, plastic and even cardboard. Over a billion tokens were circulated. These sales tax tokens are among the cheapest type of money collectibles-most cost less than a quarter. Today we still have sales tax of all kinds to collect, but the only thing different is we don't have the tokens.

If you’ll be eligible for Social Security soon and are counting on having the money in hand on your birthday, beware. That’s likely not when you’ll receive it, especially not your first check. The month is broken down into thirds. If your birthday is somewhere between the first and the 10th, expect the money on the second Wednesday of the month. Between the 11th and 20th, you’ll get your money on the third Wednesday. After that, you get yours on the fourth Wednesday. Those who began receiving benefits before 1997, however, get their benefits on the first of the month. Starting in 2013, Social Security stopped sending out checks. You now have two ways to get your money:

● Direct deposit (electronic transfer) into your bank account on the day you’re supposed to get it. This is your best bet because it’s free. This is not to be confused with an ETA account that is only for electronic transfers. Ask at your bank to be sure which one you have. ● Money applied to your Direct Express Debit card. While it’s supposedly free to handle your money this way, it often isn’t. You get one free withdrawal each month, can check your balances and can use the card wherever debit cards are accepted. (Probably not to pay your landlord, though.) After that, you’ll start getting dinged for small amounts, depending on what services you ask for. Additionally, you won’t receive your money until the month following your birthday -- unless you file at age 62 and your birthday is the 1st or 2nd of the month. Meanwhile read the details before you apply for Social Security so you know what to expect. To view the 2017 payment schedule, go online to www. ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10031-2017.pdf. STRANGE BUT TRUE

by Samantha Weaver ● The biggest polar bear ever recorded weighed a whopping 2,209 pounds -roughly the weight of 12 adult men. ● Russian health authorities are very familiar with cold-weather injuries -- and fatalities. For instance, every winter, about 100 Russians are killed by falling icicles. ● It was Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II and the 34th president of the United States, who made the following sage observation: “I would rather try to persuade a man to go along, because once I have persuaded him he will stick.
