• On May 31, 1859, the famous tower clock known as Big Ben, located atop the 320-foot-high St. Stephen’s Tower, rings out over the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London, for the first time. Its famously accurate timekeeping is regulated by a stack of coins placed on the clock’s huge pendulum. • On June 2, 1924, President Calvin Coolidge signs the Indian Citizen Act, granting automatic American citizenship to Native Americans born in the United States. The law attempted to finalize Indian assimilation into white culture while permitting Indians to retain some of their tribal traditions. • On June 6, 1933, eager motorists park their automobiles on the grounds of Park-In Theaters in Camden, N.J., the firstever drive-in movie theater. Advertising it as entertainment for the whole family, Richard Hollingshead charged 25 cents per car and 25 cents per person, with no group paying more than one dollar. OUR PARKS (CONTINUED) • The Mount Washington Observatory in Mount Washington State Park (New Hampshire) recorded a wind speed of 231 mph during a storm in 1934. In the park there is a plaque that reads: “The Highest Wind Ever Observed by Man was Recorded in This Building.” • The Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, New York commemorates the First Women’s Rights Convention held in 1848 and the early leaders of the women’s rights movement in the United States. • Roberto Clemente State Park, located along the Harlem River in the Bronx, was named in honor of the great Pittsburgh Pirate Hall of Fame baseball player and humanitarian who died in a 1972 plane crash while transporting medical, food and clothing supplies to earthquakestricken Nicaragua. • The Statue of Liberty was reconstructed in America on Bedlow Island; the island is now called Liberty Island and is only accessible by ferry. Auguste Bartholdi, who built the statue, thought that the New York harbor was the perfect setting because it was, “where people get their first view of the New World.” • Between October 4, 1927 and October 31, 1941, Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers sculpted the colossal 60-foot (18 m) carvings of U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln at Mount Rushmore National Park to represent the first 150 years of American history.
• Humans have occupied the area encompassed by Joshua Tree National Park’s nearly 800,000 Monday, acres for at least 5,000 years. The first group to inhabit the area was the Pinto Culture, June 15th known followed by the Serrano, the Chemehuevi and & the Cahuilla.

MUSIC LEGEND:
ELVIS PRESLEY The “King,” Elvis Presley, came from the humblest of beginnings. He was born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, to Vernon Elvis Presley, a truck driver, and mother Gladys Love Smith, a sewing machinist. Who could have foreseen that he would become a legendary performer and sell millions of records? • For Elvis’ 11th birthday his parents bought him his first guitar for $7.75. He had wanted a bicycle, but the guitar was all they could afford. • Elvis always said he was influenced by gospel music. His favorite singer was legendary Southern gospel singer Jake Hess. • Presley’s first commercial record release: July 19, 1954’s “That’s all right (Mama)” and “Blue Moon of Kentucky.”

Elvis, Scotty Moore and Bill Black (the Blue Moon Boys) sang “That’s all Right (Mama).”
June 4th & 5th
• “All Shook Up,” “(Let me Be Your) Teddy Bear” and “Too Much” were his hits in the early 1950s, and his record sales grew quickly during that period. In 1956, Presley launched his career as a film actor with “Love Me Tender.” He made 31 movies.

• Elvis and Elvira. Strange but true: The onetime Cassandra Peterson, known to fans as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, was once a Vegas showgirl. Presley took a professional interest in her, advising her to focus on her singing, which he thought was impressive.

His taste in food was very simple, but he was picky about who prepared his meals. He rarely ate out, instead preferring his food to be cooked by his family or closest friends. • “Heartbreak Hotel” was the first record to reach number one on the Billboard Country and Western, rhythm and blues, and pop charts all in one week. • Elvis was married in 1967 to Priscilla Presley, and their only child, Lisa Marie, was born on February 1, 1968. Health problems, drug dependency and other factors led to his death at age 42 on August 16, 1977. Or is he in hiding to get away from all the hounding of his fans? Take a tour some day of Graceland to learn more about this mysterious death. To this day, no one has ever stepped forward to collect Elvis Presley's life insurance policy.

Senior News Line by Matilda Charles
Mood Disorders The rate of those of us having mental issues involving anxiety seems to decline a bit as we advance in age. On the other hand, if we have depression, it can be harder to treat in seniors. So say two recent studies. The first study compared people of all age groups to see which group had more anxiety disorders, and then focused on older age groups (55-64 years, 65-74 years, 7584 years and 85 years and up) and compared them over a 12-month period. The results showed that, yes, there was an overall decline in mood disorders as the participants aged. Women had more disorders than men, however. Even though there is a decline in mood disorders, anxiety remains very common, especially in women. Right on the heels of this study was another concerning depression in later life. Researchers claimed that depression in seniors is harder to treat, but at least they now have a clue as to why: Those with depression “don’t respond normally to emotional stimuli,” such as faces that are neutral, happy or sad. Participants (both healthy and depressed seniors) were first asked to look at pictures of other people and rate them only by physical features. The result was that seniors without depression took longer to rate the physical features, likely because happy or sad expressions on the faces affected them and delayed a response. Participants were then asked to rate the expression on the faces in the photos. Seniors with depression weren’t distracted at all by any expression. It didn’t matter if it was a happy, neutral or sad face. Additionally -- and this is key -- depressed seniors had a harder time identifying which emotion was being expressed in the photo. This is apparently the first seniors-centered study that looked at depression from this angle. I can envision new treatments using this facial emotion recognition, perhaps paired with counseling to augment the drugs that are typically given.

• Though the first film in the series was simply titled “Star Wars,” it later had the subtitle “Episode IV: A New Hope” added to distinguish it from its sequels and prequels. • The six films together were nominated for a total of 22 Academy Awards, of which they won seven. • In 1971, Universal Studios agreed to make “American Graffiti” and “Star Wars” in a twopicture contract, although Star Wars was later rejected in its early concept stages. • Lucas’s second movie, “American Graffiti,” was completed in 1973, and, a few months later, Lucas wrote a short summary called “The Journal of the Whills,” which told of the training of apprentice C.J. Thorpe as a “Jedi-Bendu” space commando by the legendary Mace Windy. • Frustrated that his idea for a space epic was too difficult to understand, Lucas then wrote a 13page treatment called The Star Wars, which was a loose remake of Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa’s “The Hidden Fortress.”

NEW !!!!!--Surplus Craft Supply Room --some of everything --all 60%-75% below retail!!! The minister selected a 50-cent item at a convenience store, but then discovered he didn't have any money with him. "I could invite you to hear me preach in return," he said jokingly to the clerk, "but I'm afraid I don't have any fifty-cent sermons." "Perhaps," suggested the clerk, "I could come twice."

• Many other story elements of “Star Wars” paid homage to the films Lucas loved: “Metropolis,” “Flash Gordon,” “Buck Rogers,” “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “A Fistful of Dollars” and dozens of other classic movies in many different film genres. • George Lucas once planned for the characters of Luke Skywalker and his aunt and uncle to be dwarves. • In the early planning stages for the Star Wars saga, Lucas planned the character of Han Solo to be a huge green-skinned monster with no nose and gills.
The nice thing about standards is, there are so many to choose from.
Week of May 24th, 2010
• When “Star Wars” proved successful, Lucas decided to use the film as the basis for an elaborate serial, although at one point he considered walking away from the series altogether. However, Lucas wanted to create an independent filmmaking center, what would become Skywalker Ranch, and saw an opportunity to use the series as a financing agent. • “Star Wars’” opening day totaled $254,309 (U.S.) from just 32 theaters. Its first weekend box-office gross equaled $1.5 million (U.S.). By the end of its first theatrical run, “Star Wars” was the most successful film in North American history with a gross in excess of $307.2 million (U.S.). Lucas’ cut from the box office was more than $50 million (U.S.). • “High School Musical” star Zac Efron has revealed that he wants to play Luke Skywalker in George Lucas’ planned new “Star Wars” TV series. The actor loved the chance to play with props from the original Star Wars franchise in his movie “17 Again” and said he would jump at the chance to play one of science fiction’s most famous characters.

• Those of you who need your daily java fix probably won’t be surprised to learn that coffee is one of the most popular drinks worldwide and is one of the most traded agricultural commodities. Due to limitations in cultivation, however, Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. that produces the beans. • The world’s largest dam, located in Canada, is 2,790 feet long -- twice as long as Arizona and Nevada’s Hoover Dam. The truly amazing thing isn’t its size, though; it’s the manner of construction. Over the course of several months, the dam was built entirely by beavers. • According to industry experts, beverage makers sell 9 billion cases of carbonated soda in the United States every year. • If you ever open a magazine or watch TV, you’ve probably seen at least one ad from the “Got Milk?” campaign. You probably didn’t know, though, that the same campaign also broke new advertising ground with ads at bus stops that weren’t just visual; they also gave off the odor of fresh-baked cookies. That particular approach was quickly abandoned due to concerns about allergies. • Popular cooking expert and television host Rachael Ray reportedly has a sign hanging outside her door that says “Martha doesn’t live here.” *** Thought for the Day: “Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.” -- Mark Twain
