THE GRAND CANYON (continued): • With the Grand Canyon’s large expanse of land there is great environmental variety. The elevation ranges from 1,200 feet (366 m) near Lake Mead to 9,165 feet (2793 m) above sea level at the north rim. Scientists have identified five life zones in the park: Lower Sonoran, Upper Sonoran, Transition, Canadian and Hudsonian. The best way to think of this is that if you traveled from Mexico to Canada, you would see lots of variations in the ecosystem, but you can see the same variations within Grand Canyon National Park! So from desert plants to mountain trees – they’re all there! From the north rim to the canyon floor, the temperature can vary up to 35° F. (19.4°C) • Bears, mountain lions, weasels, bald eagles and many other animal species are found in the park. Keep in mind that Grand Canyon National Park is home to six species of rattlesnakes, including the most common Grand Canyon pink rattlesnake that blends in with the canyon terrain. If you go hiking on the many miles of trails, watch your step and listen carefully! • Baby rattlers are born fully equipped with poisonous venom and teeth. They are born with a “prebutton” for the rattler that is shed with its skin making way for “buttons” that develop. Rattling occurs when they grow more buttons and shake them together – at the speed of about 60 or more times per second! • Approximately 47 reptile species are found in the park. Ten are common along the Colorado River in the bottom of the canyon. Have you heard of gila monsters and chuckwallas? They are the two largest lizards in the area.
Q: What is the best thing to take on a hike in the Grand Canyon? A: A thirst aid kit!

hank You to everyone involved with the Cedar Rapids Police Department & Linn county Sheriff’s Canine Divisions fund-raising event that was held on May 22nd. With strong support from many varied businesses who donated their services and products made this third annual event a big success. There are many great causes that need similar help to fund the needs of their missions. Because the city and county canine are funded by private donations, our mission here is to help protect the citizens of Linn County by providing the K-9 services with the Police and Sheriff departments. An individual canine trained by 2-4 years of age serves 6-8 years. The successful candidate, typically coming from Czech Republic, Holland or Germany, is a Belgian Malinois (pronounced MAL-in-wah) shepherd. The Cedar Rapids Police Department (CRPD) active canine division in its 13th year, began with one, initiated by John McDaniel. The Linn County Sheriff Department (LCSD) today has 2 dual purpose canine, specializing in explosive detection and narcotics, as well as protecting their handler if endangered. They need 2 new dogs. Two reasons canine are so important to deputies is immediate backup and absolute detainment. Often two man-patrol CRPD backup response may be 3-4 minutes, whereas the single patrolling Sheriff’s deputy backup response may be as much as 15 minutes.
With a canine, the single riding deputy has immediate on-site backup. Working canine actually detain the wrong-doer more effectively than a human officer with gun drawn. That wrong-doer has greater immediate response and respect of the canine threat than the officer. We as individuals, our communities, need to step up, supporting our own protection. The individuals of the canine division are a tremendous resource for our law enforcers. The well-serving canines, a lower department cost overall than full time human officers, excel in: • traffic stops • defense against terrorism • drug detection • detaining/holding people • burglaries • officer protection Basic veterinary care is donated by an unnamed local vet. Special needs arising have to be paid. Beyond initial costs, the greatest expense is food. A bag of food lasts about 1 month. All the dog food is donated by Nutro® Natural Choice®, and Pet’s Playhouse. The event on May 22nd generated $15,000.00. This was made possible by 60 plus bussiness’s who donated, the 50 plus volunteers that participated before, during and after the event, and the thousands of people who attended the event and donated graciously to help the officers continue this K-9 program.
Thank You, Mike and Sheri Hunt owner’s Pet’s Playhouse Continued support is needed. Please consider a donation to the K-9 Benefit fund. Donations can be sent to the Ohnward Bank & Trust at:1211 Edgewood Road SW Cedar Rapids, IA 52404

THE GRAND CANYON (continued): • The Grand Canyon Railway began as an extension of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. In 1901, the Santa Fe extended a branch to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, and hotel and restaurant developer Fred Harvey entered the scene. The Fred Harvey Company, with railroad architect Charles Whittlessey’s design expertise, built the El Tovar Hotel 20 feet (6 m) from the edge of the south rim in 1905. The beautiful, rugged building sometimes called “the most expensively constructed and appointed log house in America” is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. • When automobiles became popular in the 1920s, the Santa Fe Railway lost a lot of riders. It struggled until closing in 1968. Over the years after its closing, the park became more and more congested with vehicles. The branch line was reopened in 1991 and is operated by the Grand Canyon Railway. The nostalgic train rides are more popular than ever today. • Another architectural beauty built by the Fred Harvey Company in the Grand Canyon is the Desert View Watchtower. Architect Mary Colter designed the structure to mimic an Anasazi Indian watchtower. It was dedicated in 1933 and provides an excellent view of the canyon along East Rim Drive. • In 2008, a couple of “typo vigilantes” used whiteout and permanent markers to correct mistakes on a sign on the watchtower. Now, typos are annoying, and we should all strive to be grammatically correct at all times, but don’t we need to respect historic property? Yes, the two were banned from all national parks for a year, had to pay $3,035 for repairs and are banned from modifying any public signs. When hiking on public lands, many times signs are up saying, “Pack it in, Pack it out,” or something similar. It is important for you to do just that. Think about you’re packaging of snacks, etc. and make sure you don’t leave litter behind. Here are a few estimated life expectancies for types of litter found in the backcountry: paper, 2-4 weeks; cigarette butt, 2-5 years; disposable diaper, 10-20 years; hard plastic container, 20-30 years; tin can, 80-100 years; aluminum can, 200400 years; plastic six-pack holder, 450 years; glass bottles, many, many years. Please, “leave no trace!”

Norman and his wife live in Fargo. One winter morning while listening to the radio, they hear the announcer say, “We are going to have 3 to 4 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even numbered side of the street, so the snowplow can get through”. Norman’s wife goes out and moves her car. A week later, while they in are eating breakThis word means: A condition which the earth’s surface is worn fast, the radio announcer says, “We are away by the action of water and wind. expecting 4 to 5 inches of snow today, you must park your car on the odd numbered side of the street, so the snow- plow can get through.”. So, Norman’s wife goes out and moves her car. The next week they are having breakfast again and the radio announcer says, “We are 1. Colorado River expecting 10 -12 inches of snow today, you 2. THE CUTTING EDGE
• The knife is one of the oldest tools known to man. The earliest ones, typically fashioned out of flint, were used as tools or weapons. It wasn’t until the Middle Ages that we began using knives as eating utensils. The fork wasn’t invented until even later; the mid-17th century. Prior to that time, most men wore a knife in a sheath on their belts. At the dinner table, it served as both knife and fork, used both for cutting and for spearing food. • The truth behind the invention of the butterfly knife (balisong) is murky. What we do know is that these knives became the preferred knives of sailors around the world. The blade could be safely tucked away between the two handles when it wasn’t in use. And unlike most folding knives, it was as strong as a fixed-blade knife when extended. Today, most of these knives are crafted by manufacturers in the Philippine Islands. • The bayonet (named after Bayonne, the town where it was invented) made its debut in 1647. The French army’s earliest bayonets were spear-like blades that were inserted directly into the muzzle of a gun. Although the firearm couldn’t be discharged while the bayonet was in place, it provided soldiers with a viable weapon once their ammunition was spent. Later versions of the bayonet fit around the barrel, not inside it. They were also long enough for a foot soldier to reach an enemy mounted on horseback (or vice versa, as the situation warranted). • Do you eat your food the American way, or use the Continental method? In Europe, most diners hold their knives in their right hands continuously throughout the meal. Americans customarily hold the knife in their “strong hand” while cutting, then set it down and transfer the fork to that hand to eat. Overseas, this is called the “zig-zag” style. • A shiv is a term used to describe any homemade, knife-like weapon. Hardened criminals in prison have been known to make shivs out of anything from a long shard of glass to the handle of a plastic toothbrush. In books, TV, and the movies, writers sometimes use the terms “shiv” and “shank” interchangeably. But while a shiv covers a wide variety of weapons, a shank is defined as a metal weapon made strictly from the material found in prison-issued shoes or boots. • The modern steel scalpel was invented by Arabian surgeon Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi just over 1000 years ago. As a health precaution, today’s surgical scalpels are used for only a single medical procedure. The blades are then carefully disposed of in an approved containment unit. • Designed by Jim Bowie, the original Bowie knife was part butcher’s knife and part Spanish hunting knife. Its 9.5-inch-long blade was flanked by a large, S-shaped guard at the base to protect the user’s hand. While the American knifemaker was no relation to English rock singer David Bowie, the vocalist did borrow Jim’s last name for a reason. The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger was already an established star, and since “Jagger” was a slang term for a knife, young David Jones adopted his own “sharp” name: Bowie. • Carl Elsener formed the Swiss Cutlery Guild in 1891 to bring jobs to his small hometown in Switzerland. One of the first products he designed was the “Soldier’s Model” knife. The fold-out unit included not only a blade, but also a heavy-duty screwdriver that could be used to dismantle service rifles. Elsener later added many more attachments (such as a corkscrew and can opener) and patented the device that is now generically referred to as the Swiss Army knife.

● On June 28, 1928, 26-year-old Louis Armstrong walked into a Chicago recording studio and recorded “West End Blues.” Armstrong’s 15-second trumpet intro to “West End Blues” and his eight-bar solo near the end make it one of the most influential pieces of recorded music in history. ● On July 3, 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs the Rivers and Harbors Flood Control Bill, which allocates funds to improve flood-control and waterstorage systems across the country. The bill was introduced in the wake of disastrous hurricanes that hit the northeastern United States in August 1955. ● On June 30, 1962, Sandy Koufax strikes out 13 batters and walks five to lead the Brooklyn Dodgers to victory over the New York Mets 5-0 with his first career no-hitter. ● On July 1, 1979, the Sony Walkman goes on sale for the very first time. The initial production run of 30,000 units looked to be too ambitious after one month of lackluster sales (only 3,000 were sold in the first month), but after a massive advertising campaign, available stocks sold out before the end of August. ● On July 2, 1992, the one-millionth Corvette, a white LT1 roadster with a red interior and a black roof -- the same colors as the original 1953 model -- rolls off the assembly line in Bowling Green, Ky. The Corvette went into production in June 1953 with a base sticker price of $3,760 (around $30,000 in today’s dollars). (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Arizona has the real Grand Canyon, but there are other canyons around the United States and Canada that include “grand” in their names. Let’s explore! • There are four “Grand Canyons” in Canada, all in British Columbia. The Grand Canyon of the Fraser and Grand Canyon of the Nechako are in north-central British Colombia. The Nechako River flows into the Fraser River. The other two Canadian grand canyons are in the far north of B.C. The Grand Canyon of the Liard River is home to the most significant hot springs area in Canada. The Grand Canyon of the Stikine is in northwestern B.C. and is one of the most rugged river canyons in the world. Only a small number of world-class kayakers have ever attempted to run this river. The mouth of the Stikine is actually in Alaska. The river has prolific salmon runs, but because of the tremendous force of the rapids, the salmon are only in the lower onethird of the river. • Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks each have Grand Canyons. The Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne in Yosemite is on the Tuolumne River and is a demanding area to hike. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is not as well known as Old Faithful geyser, but it is just as impressive. There is a moderately strenuous hike to the area known as Inspiration Point that provides a perfect photo opportunity. • Hawaii has Waimea Canyon, which is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, located on Kauai. If you happen to be there in May, The Banana Poka Roundup is a “forest fair” that educates the public about the banana poka weed, which is an invasive pest. • Pine Creek Gorge near Wellsboro is called the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. It is on the Allegheny Plateau that is a part of the Appalachian Mountains. The Leonard Harrison and Colton Point state parks are on opposite sides of the canyon. The gorge is in the midst of approximately 165,000 acres (66773 ha) of the Tioga State Forest. It is about 47 miles (75.6 km) long and the maximum depth is 1,450 feet (442 m) near the southern end. • Another Grand Canyon in the eastern U.S. is on the Genessee River about 35 miles (56 km) south of Rochester, New York in Letchwork State Park. This is another gorgeous area with canyon walls as high as 600 feet (183 m). William Letchworth was a successful businessman who bought property along the river in the late 1800s. He donated his acreage and his Glen Iris Estate to New York in 1906. It became Letchworth State Park in 1907, and the Glen Iris became an Inn in 1914. (By the way, he named his home for Iris, Greek god of rainbows.) • Georgia has a “Little Grand Canyon” about 30 miles (48 km) away from former President Jimmy Carter’s hometown of Plains. Providence Canyon State Park has 15 canyons and reaches a depth of 150 feet (46 m) from top to bottom. During July and August the rare plumleaf azalea can be observed with beautiful blooms. The plants grow only in this region and bloom when most other azaleas have stopped. • There are many other canyons around the world not mentioned here. Most areas with these geological wonders have turned them into tourist destinations. Get out your atlases or search the internet for canyons to explore. • The Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon (or Tsangpo Canyon), along the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet, China, is regarded by some as the deepest canyon in the world, and is slightly longer than Grand Canyon making it one of the world's largest

Baddest girls in the whole town June 23 Summer's New Year Eve Birthday Party! Poo Bare and Lady Jane's Birthday Russ, Bryce & Jeff will perform 8-Midnight June 25th Bryce Janey and DJ 8-Midnight A young man who was also an avid golfer found himself with a few hours to spare one afternoon. He figured if he hurried and played very fast, he could get in nine holes before he had to head home. Just as he was about to tee off an old gentleman shuffled onto the tee and asked if he could accompany the young man as he was golfing alone. Not being able to say no, he allowed the old gent to join him. To his surprise the old man played fairly quickly. He didn't hit the ball far, but plodded along consistently and didn't waste much time. Finally, they reached the 9th fairway and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball - and directly between his ball and the green. After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot the old man finally said, "You know, when I was your age I'd hit the ball right over that tree." With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard, hit the ball up, right smack into the top of the tree trunk and it thudded back on the ground not a foot from where it had originally lay. The old man offered one more comment, "Of course, when I was your age that pine tree was only three feet tall."

● “We had an unfortunate event recently in our upstairs bathroom. The toilet overflowed, and when we tried to turn off the water, the knob to turn it off wouldn’t budge. Here’s some good advice from the plumber, for which we paid dearly: Turn water valves on and off twice a year to keep them from sticking. Know where your home’s water cutoff valve is, and have the necessary tool to close it readily available.” -- L.E. in Ohio

● “When you have soups, stews or meats to freeze, let the food cool to room temperature, then do this: Doubleline a large container with self-sealing plastic bags. Fill the bags and let all the air out of them. Lay in the freezer flat. They stack much better and take up way less room.” -- M.K. in Texas ● Banish mildew from beneath entryway welcome mats: Mix 1 cup bleach into 1 gallon of water and use it to scrub away mildew from concrete. Let dry and seal with a concrete sealer. Be sure to allow the area some sunlight from time to time.

● In May of this year, Canadian chef Ted Reader attempted to break the Guinness record for the world’s largest hamburger. The patty alone weighed more than 300 pounds, and the bun was 105 pounds. Once the burger was decked out with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, red onions, pickles and barbecue sauce, the grand total was a whopping 590 pounds. Guinness has not yet certified the giant hamburger, but it seems a shoe-in to beat the current record holder, which is a measly 158.8 pounds. ● Hasbro’s Easy-Bake oven was so popular when in was released in 1963 that it sold a half million of the toys within the first year. ● If getting out on the road these days is making you nervous, you have good reason: According to the 2010 GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test survey, approximately 38 million American drivers would fail a written drivers test -- that’s 20 percent of licensed drivers.
