AMUSEMENT PARKS (continued): The stage at Lake Compounce has hosted such names as Houdini, Frank Sinatra and Count Basie. Admission to a 1941 show featuring a young Sinatra performing with the Tommy Dorsey Band could be had for $1.10. Although visitors can now ride a state-of-the-art roller coaster and white water raft trip, the park maintains its charm with a 1927 coaster, a carousel from 1911 and an antique trolley. • The famous Coney Island started out as a beach resort consisting of three amusement parks, racetracks and luxury hotels, and was home to what is considered the first roller coaster in America. The Switchback Gravity Pleasure Railway opened in 1884 at a cost of $1,600. At ten cents per ride, the park took in $600 to $700 per day! Coney Island’s most famous coaster, the 85-foot-high (26 meters) Cyclone, opened in 1927 and was a twisting figure-8 coaster that cost $175,000 to build. The Cyclone was such a thrilling ride that one young man mute since birth regained his voice while riding it. “I feel sick!” were the first words of West Virginia coal miner Emilio Franco back in 1948. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, you can still take a ride on the Cyclone, a oneminute, 50-second thrill. • As Pittsburgh bridge builder George Ferris sat at an engineer’s banquet where the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair was being planned, he made a sketch of a large wheel on a napkin. That sketch was the beginning of a 264-foot- (80.4-meter) high wheel on a 45-foot (13.7-meter) axle that was the centerpiece of the Columbian Exposition. Each of its 36 cars contained revolving chairs holding 60 people, giving up to 2,160 people a ride each time. It took 20 minutes to load as it stopped for passengers to enter, then offered a nine-minute non-stop ride for the sum of 50 cents. During the time of the Exposition, the ride grossed $726,805. The Ferris wheel operated there until April of 1894, when it was dismantled and relocated to a park on Chicago’s North Side. After eight years there, it was once again taken apart and the four-million-pound (1,814,369 kg) structure was taken by train to St. Louis for the 1904 World’s Fair. Sad to say, in 1906, the wheel was dynamited and sold as scrap iron. Even more unfortunate is the fact that George Ferris died in debt at age 37 of typhoid fever. • The only 19th century Ferris wheel remaining in the world, the Reisenrad, is located in Vienna, Austria’s Wurstelprater. That wheel was constructed in 1897.

Three boys on the playground were bragging about their dads. One said. "My dad scribbles a few words, calls it a song and they pay him 50 bucks." "Oh, yah. My dad scribbles a few words, calls it a poem and they pay him 100 bucks." "That's nothin'," said the third kid. My dad scribbles a few words, calls it a sermon and it takes six people to collect all the money!"
One thing you have to say about amusement parks -- they're not cheap thrills.
T
he H.D. Youth Center would like to thank everyone involved with our programs.
With the help of many volunteers, our Annual ADVENTURELAND trip was another success for many kids from ages 4 - 15. We had 347 people go with us this year. We went on June 19th and the weather was excellent. We used seven busses to transport everyone. We provided a lunch which was prepared by Emils Deli. A big thanks to Spielman’s Event Services for providing us coolers to transport the lunch and drinks. Our next event will be on August 21st. This will be our annual Back to School Back Pack and school supplies giveway. Please consider donating to this event if you can as last year we help over 1,050 students. This years event was organized by Dan and Twyla Bowers. Our entire Board of Directors greatly appreciates all the hard work they have done.
Thank You
We have many programs throughout the year that we need volunteers to help organize and participate to make these events great. If you would like to learn more about how you can help, please contact Henry at: (319) 329-8841

AMUSEMENT PARKS (continued): • If you love roller coasters, Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, is the place for you. Located at the edge of Lake Erie, it is the second oldest amusement park in America and boasts 17 coasters (the most in the world), from old-style wooden coasters to hydraulic launch rocket coasters. The Top Thrill Dragster, the secondfastest in the world, climbs to a height of 420 feet (128 meters) and reaches speeds of 120 mph (193 km/hr). If this is too much excitement for you, opt for the tamer Giga-Coaster, only 310 ft. (94 meters) tall and traveling a mild 93 mph (105 km/hr). • Cedar Point started out with a beer garden, bathhouse and dance floor in 1870. Its first roller coaster, the Switchback Railway, opened in 1892, and thrilled riders with its 10 mph (16 km/ hr) speeds and 25-foot (7.6-meter) height. There was no chain lift, and cars had to be hauled to the top manually at the end of the ride. The park also featured a water swing and trapeze that soared out and threw riders into Lake Erie. By 1905, an elegant 600-room hotel graced the shoreline. Famed Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne was a young lifeguard on the lake’s beach in 1913. • Six Flags opened its first park in Texas in 1961, and now has 20 parks across North America. It takes its name from the six flags that have flown over Texas through its history–those of Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America and the United States of America. The first park featured an Indian village, railroad, stagecoach ride, gondola, Wild West shows and the piratethemed attraction, Skull Island.

Miss Linn County Scholarship Program By Sarah Campbell Williams A group of very talented, intelligent, serviceminded, and not to mention beautiful young ladies from the Miss Linn County court are back from the Miss Iowa pageant in Davenport, Iowa which is a prelude pageant to Miss America. The Miss America Organization is one of the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. This assistance is not just for the handful of young women who become Miss America, but is available to the over 12,000 young women who compete in the state and local competitions as well. Miss Linn County, Gretchen Bruesehoff is a 23 year old student from the University of Iowa. Her career ambition is to be an Opera singervoice teacher. Gretchen competed in Interview, Swimsuit, Talent which was Classical Vocal, On-stage Question and Formal Wear. At pageant, Gretchen promoted her platform which is The Importance of Music Education and is working hard to keep music education alive in our kids school systems. The Miss Linn County Board who consists of Ainsley Hogan, Sarah Campbell-Williams, Courtney Hogan and Stephanie Runnells Eenhuis are very pleased to announce that Gretchen placed 4th runner-up over-all at the Miss Iowa Pageant and also was the recipient of the Miss Congeniality Award! 13 year old Anna Masengarb is Miss Linn's Outstanding Teen. She is from West Middle School and competed in Interview, Formal Wear, Fitness, and On-stage Question and Talent which she entertained audiences with vocals. Anna is passionate about her platform which is Skin Cancer Awareness and encourages the use of sun protection. She encourages individuals to stay away from outdoor tanning and tanning beds offering suggestions like spray tanning as alternatives. It is no coincidence that the two Linn County Princesses have the same last name as they are in fact sisters. Emily Rose has been in pageants for 3 years now and her little sister Erica has recently followed suit. This year, Emily Rose was awarded the Helping Hearts Award for being a positive young role model, having a kind and giving spirit and her community service work. Both girls are local elementary students. The Miss Linn County program helps these, and other young ladies, achieve their dreams by encouraging success in academics, self-esteem, volunteerism, community spirit and in meeting their long-term goals and dreams! Please look for these women at summer events and stop by to say "Hello". In addition, if you are interested in requesting them to attend an event to speak, perform, or make an appearance, please go to our website which is www.misslinncounty.com and contact us! If you know of someone who may be interested in becoming a future contestant, you may contact us the same way!

Let’s take a look at this summertime favorite food. • More than $1.6 billion was spent last year on hot dogs and sausages in U.S. supermarkets. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the average consumption of hot dogs in America is more than 800 per second! That’s a typical summer of about seven billion hot dogs. Residents of Los Angeles eat more hot dogs than any other locale, edging out second-place New York City. • July 4 is a big day for hot dogs. This year, Americans will consume about 150 million hot dogs on that day, which, laid end to end, will stretch the distance from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles five times. • What would the ballpark be without hot dogs? During Major League baseball season, the hot dogs consumed would stretch from Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Stadium to Florida’s Tropicana Field. That’s close to 21.3 million dogs! When baseball fans were polled, 63 percent said that hot dogs were the number one concession they couldn’t do without. Peanuts were a distant second at 18 percent. Hot dog vendors at the parks will haul around a bin that weighs about 40 pounds fully loaded and will experience average sales of 150 dogs while walking between four and five miles per game. • When visiting Calgary, Alberta, Canada, stop by The Tubby Dog and order up the Sherm’s Ultimate Gripper. What you’ll receive for $9.50 is a 1/3-lb. hot dog, wrapped in bacon and deepfried. It is topped with mustard, homemade chili, sautéed onions, grilled ham, banana peppers, bacon bits and a fried egg, before being smothered in nacho cheese. • A typical street vendor in Chicago will top your dog with yellow mustard, green pickle relish, raw onions, cucumbers and tomato slices. • Airports are a high-consumption location for hot dogs. The most are devoured at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, six times more than L.A. International and New York’s LaGuardia combined. • We say “hot dog,” but the Spanish say perrito caliente, while the French say chien chaud. The Finnish eat makkarat, and cachorro quente are consumed by the Portuguese. • Although Americans had been eating hot dogs during the late 1800s, they first became a hit served on a bun at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. George J. French timed things right; that’s the year he introduced his yellow mustard. • During England’s King George VI’s 1939 visit to the United States, President Franklin D. Roosevelt chose hot dogs for the main dinner menu. German actress and singer Marlene Dietrich was also known for her favorite meal of hot dogs and champagne. • A meat market on the north side of Chicago gave brothers Oscar, Max and Gottfried Mayer the beginning of their road to success. In 1900, the trio began making and distributing bockwurst, liverwurst and weisswurst, making deliveries in the German neighborhoods by horse-drawn wagon. The first Oscar Mayer Weinermobile motored along the streets of Chicago in 1936, weighing about the same as 150,000 hot dogs. There have been six of the vehicles built since that time.

If I were a cowboy, with pride on a painted pony I would ride Like a lonesome dove but with a true blue friend at my side At the drop of a hat with the forces of evil I would do battle Truth and justice would follow into the sunset high in the saddle If I were a cowboy, I’d wear boots and a wide brimmed black hat In a small town honky tonk on a Saturday night is where I’d be at A shot of rye, a bottle of beer, there’d be nothing that I would fear In quiet contemplation I would reaffirm everything that I hold dear If I were a cowboy, a country gal would be singing my favorite song The days would go on forever with the nights just about as long A shot gun and a hunting dog would grace the back of my truck Five card stud would be my sport an ace up my sleeve just for luck If I were a cowboy, in every town I would know all of the pretty girls Winning their hearts and keeping them with diamonds and pearls Finding love, despite locking my stoic emotions deep down inside Like in the movies, into the sunset, on a painted pony I would ride

Timing May be Right for Earnhardt Jr. BROOKLYN, Mich. -- In terms of the Chase for the Sprint Cup, Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s forecast isn’t too dour. Following a respectable seventh-place finish at Michigan International Speedway, Earnhardt is 14th in the standings, just 81 points out of “Chase position,” meaning the top 12. He’s ahead of two drivers, Ryan Newman and Jamie McMurray, who have won races this year. In terms of expectations, however, Earnhardt is having another difficult year. He has more fans than anyone else in NASCAR, and they expect him to win multiple races and championships. The expectations may be unreasonable, but they come with the territory of being the son of a seven-time champion. Asked what he had to say to his fans about the latest race, Earnhardt said, “Hopefully, they enjoyed (the) good run, and I hope that I can bring more of them to them, man. We’ve just got to have a good car, but with the way these races go at the end, you’ve got to have a ton of luck, too, to make a lot of right calls and have the best car at the end. “But you’ve got to put a good car on the race track, and Lance (McGrew, his crew chief) has done that the last two weeks ... real good cars.” The timing just might be right. The regular season has 11 more races, affording Earnhardt ample opportunity to reach the top 12 for the Chase, which consists of the final 10 races. Earnhardt has been in the top 12 after seven of the 15 races in the season to date, five of them in a row at one point. Earnhardt began the season impressively, finishing a fast-closing second in the Daytona 500 after making a breathtaking charge that fell just short. The Michigan finish matched his best performance since, equaling a seventh-place finish at Bristol. He also finished eighth at Texas, the site of his first Cup victory on April 2, 2000. “This is the kind of run we want to have,” he said after the Heluva Good! 400. “We can do it. The guys taking (the car) to the racetrack have just got to get it right. “We’re not a team that’s challenging for victories just yet, so top 10 (finishes) for us are a direction we need to go.” Earnhardt, 35, has won 18 of 378 Sprint Cup races. His most recent victory was at Michigan on June 15, 2008.

With some good recent finishes and a 14thplace standing at the moment, Dale Earnhardt Jr. may be ready to put together a decent finish as the season draws closer to the Chase. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo)
