INDEPENDENCE DAY (continued): • Although Americans celebrate Independence Day on July 4, John Adams originally thought it would be celebrated on the second. Here is what he wrote to his wife on July 3, 1776: “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God.” • The signing of the Declaration was not completed until August 1776, but the Fourth of July holiday has been accepted as the official anniversary of U.S. independence. It was not declared a federal holiday until 1941. Today, it is celebrated in all states and territories of the United States. • The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence did not sign at the same time. The official event occurred on August 2, 1776, when 50 men signed it. • The first Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776, four days after the Declaration of Independence was adopted. Some accounts claim that it was The Liberty Bell sounding from the tower of Independence Hall on that day that summoned citizens to gather for the first public reading of the Declaration, which was given by Colonel John Nixon. • Within a few years of that first commemoration, the Fourth of July was observed throughout most of the new nation. • The first two versions of the famous Liberty Bell were defective and had to be recast. The third version rang every Fourth of July from 1778 to 1846, when, according to legend, it cracked as it was being tolled for the celebration of George Washington’s birthday.

he H.D. Youth Center would like to thank everyone involved with our programs.

With the help of many volunteers, our Annual ADVENTURELAND Trip was another success for many kids from ages 4 - 15. We had 347 people go with us this year. We went on June 19th and the weather was excellent. We used seven busses to transport everyone. We provided a lunch which was prepared by Emils Deli. A big thanks to Spielman’s Event Services for providing us coolers to transport the lunch and drinks. Also the following businesses have contributed greatly; Nexteraenergy DAEC, Electronic Engineering, Paddy O’Roarks, Port-O-John, Metro High School, HACAP, Hy-Vee and Quaker Oats supported us. Our next event will be on August 21st. This will be our annual Back to School Back Pack and school supplies giveway. Please consider donating to this event if you can as last year we help over 1,050 students. This years event was organized by Dan and Twyla Bowers. Our entire Board of Directors greatly appreciates all the hard work they have done.

• In 1778, General George Washington marked the Fourth with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. Across the sea, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France.

• The first public Fourth of July event at the White House occurred in 1801. • The first Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi occurred at Independence Creek, Kansas, and was celebrated by the explorers Lewis and Clark in 1804. • Several important U.S. projects were started on Independence Day. Work on the Erie Canal in New York State began on July 4, 1817. Construction of the first railroad in the United States, the Baltimore and Ohio, was started on July 4, 1828. July 4 was the date selected in 1848 for laying the cornerstone of the Washington Monument. • Two American icons who were instrumental in ensuring the country’s independence passed away on July 4. Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day in 1826.

• The July 4 Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest was first held in 1916, the year Nathan’s opened its flagship restaurant on Surf Avenue in Coney Island, New York. • Now, every July 4, a group of 20 steely-stomached individuals line up behind a 30-foot table at Nathan’s on Coney Island for the world hot dog eating championship. “independence” in their name. The most populous of these is Independence, Missouri, with 113,288 residents. Other places adopted the name “freedom.” Freedom, California, with 6,000 residents, has the largest population among these. There is one place named “patriot,” Patriot, Indiana, with a population of 202.

• Life wasn’t easy for young Tom Jones. His father worked the coalmines of the Rhondda Valley, while his mother tended the house and the two children. • Jones began singing at an early age. He sang in the church and with the choir at school. He would ask his mother to “pull the drapes and announce me,” as he sang on his “stage” in the sitting room. He wasn’t a very good student. After graduation, at age 17, he married and had a son. • Tom Jones began singing professionally in 1963, performing as Tommy Scott with the Senators, a Welsh group. In 1964, he recorded a handful of solo tracks with record producer Joe Meek and shopped them to various record companies with little success. • But persistence pays off. Record companies at first found Tom’s sound raucous and too powerful, the performance style too forward and sexual. Then in late 1964, he landed a recording contract with Decca Records. • Tom Jones’ first single was not a great success, but the next choice, a new song called “It’s Not Unusual,” was a huge international hit. Considered “too hot” by the established BBC Radio at the time, it was played by the pirate offshore station “Radio Caroline.” By the next year, Jones found himself opening for the Rolling Stones and playing alongside the Spencer Davis Group. • Jones` popularity began to slip somewhat by the middle of 1966. So he decided to change his image to a more respectable, mature tuxedoed crooner. Jones also began to sing material that appealed to a broad audience, like the country songs “Green, Green Grass of Home” and “Detroit City.” The strategy worked, as he returned to the top of the charts in the U.K. and began hitting the Top 40 again in the United States. • Jones was offered his own television show in the summer of 1969. A contract was drawn with ABC TV that was the largest ever between network and artist. The show’s location was split between London and Los Angeles, and it included an impressive guest list of virtually every major star of the day. • In the late 60s, Jones began to play in Las Vegas. Soon after, he began recording less, choosing to concentrate on his lucrative club performances. After his longtime manager died in the late 1970s, Jones’ son, Mark Woodward, became his manager. • In 1974, Jones moved to the United States, buying the mansion formerly belonging to Dean Martin in Bel-Air, Los Angeles. There he lived with his wife of 50 years, Melinda. • On March 29, 2006, 65-year-old Tom Jones was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. In a statement to the press, he said, “When you first come into show business and you get a hit record, it is the start of something. As time goes on, it just gets better. This is the best thing that I have had. It is a wonderful feeling, a heady feeling.”

was opened with the idea that there are crafters looking for an outlet to display their talents and to sell their creations. After years of sewing themselves Elayne and Valerie found the opportunity to offer such a place; they have taken a house at 115 Main St in Shellsburg and transformed it into a collage of sewing and beautiful craft creations. Each room is decorated to display the talents of over 31 consigners. The rooms are constantly changing as crafters bring in new creations. The “baby” room has over 30 quilts in it alone, and the kitchen is so full the appliances were removed and the cupboard fronts were taken off just to give everything display space. Every person that comes into the store is exposed to a wide variety of items; quilts, needlework, greeting cards, jewelry, floral arrangements, and so much more. If you see something that you like but perhaps would like it in a different color or size, all of the crafters can be reached and would be happy to customize your order-at no extra cost! MyTyme Creations now has a room that contains “Crafter’s Surplus”. This room gives crafters a chance to sell their overflow of supplies. Many of us buy with intent, but reality is that it ends up taking up space. Customers as well as other crafters can benefit from our “intents”. MyTyme Creations has been open for two years now, and is becoming a popular place for group outings. The store is open Wednesday thru Friday 12:00 to 6:00pm and on Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Paying for Pet Food Too many seniors are considering giving away their pets or taking them to the shelter. Often the senior is on a limited budget, and it’s getting too difficult to pay for pet food. If you’re in this group, help is available. While there doesn’t seem to be a national network of pet assistance for seniors, small efforts have sprung up across the country. In some places, animal shelters have been taking donations of food and money to help people keep their pets. Call and ask for help. (Many have funds available for veterinary care, too.) Call the Humane Society’s national number (202-452-1100) or go online to www.humanesociety.org. (You can use the computers at the library if you don’t have Internet.) Do a Google search for: pets food assistance. Put in your state to find help in your area. Try this search: pet food pantry. Or this: pets food “need help.” Google also has an online article called “Having trouble affording your pet?” It includes a list of help organizations for every state. Call your veterinarian’s office and ask if they know of a local help organization. Many big chain pet stores are donating food to organizations on the local level. Call the pet stores in your area and ask if they know of local help organizations or if they donate to any. Call your local food bank. Many are starting to take donations of pet food. Researchers say that having a pet to care for can do wonders for our health. We get more exercise as we throw toys for a cat and get to socialize with others when we take the dog on a walk. Having a pet is good for us. There’s also the little matter of love we share with out pets. Before you give up your pet because of the cost of its food, ask for help.

I think this will build us some momentum. I’m not going to say it’s going to push our guys, because the guys have to get on board. “I believe they’ll have confidence going to Watkins Glen (the other road course, on Aug. 8) that we can actually win that race, so we can build some momentum throughout the summer, and hopefully have some good runs. Gordon, from Orange, Calif., has been a winner in NASCAR, off-road racing and Indy cars. At age 41, he continues to compete in major off-road races. He has three Sprint Cup victories to his credit, the most recent occurring on Aug. 10, 2003, at Watkins Glen. “This is a tough sport,” he said. “I don’t know how to say it. Cup racing, when you’re racing against these teams out here, you’re racing against the best teams in America. “Obviously, Cup racing is where it’s at. We’re fortunate enough to be in it. How do you say it? Sometimes we dog-paddle; sometimes we take a few gulps of water. Other times, you have days like this that you can build momentum on for a little while.”
