INDEPENDENCE DAY (continued): • Although Americans celebrate Independence Day on July 4, John Adams originally thought it would be celebrated on the second. Here is what he wrote to his wife on July 3, 1776: “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God.” • The signing of the Declaration was not completed until August 1776, but the Fourth of July holiday has been accepted as the official anniversary of U.S. independence. It was not declared a federal holiday until 1941. Today, it is celebrated in all states and territories of the United States. • The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence did not sign at the same time. The official event occurred on August 2, 1776, when 50 men signed it. • The first Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776, four days after the Declaration of Independence was adopted. Some accounts claim that it was The Liberty Bell sounding from the tower of Independence Hall on that day that summoned citizens to gather for the first public reading of the Declaration, which was given by Colonel John Nixon. • Within a few years of that first commemoration, the Fourth of July was observed throughout most of the new nation. • The first two versions of the famous Liberty Bell were defective and had to be recast. The third version rang every Fourth of July from 1778 to 1846, when, according to legend, it cracked as it was being tolled for the celebration of George Washington’s birthday.

he H.D. Youth Center would like to thank everyone involved with our programs.
With the help of many volunteers, our Annual ADVENTURELAND Trip was another success for many kids from ages 4 - 15. We had 347 people go with us this year. We went on June 19th and the weather was excellent. We used seven busses to transport everyone. We provided a lunch which was prepared by Emils Deli. A big thanks to Spielman’s Event Services for providing us coolers to transport the lunch and drinks. Also the following businesses have contributed greatly; Nexteraenergy DAEC, Electronic Engineering, Paddy O’Roarks, Port-O-John, Metro High School, HACAP, Hy-Vee and Quaker Oats supported us. Our next event will be on August 21st. This will be our annual Back to School Back Pack and school supplies giveway. Please consider donating to this event if you can as last year we help over 1,050 students. This years event was organized by Dan and Twyla Bowers. Our entire Board of Directors greatly appreciates all the hard work they have done.
Thank You
We have many programs throughout the year that we need volunteers to help organize and participate to make these events great. If you would like to learn more about how you can help, please contact Henry at: (319) 329-8841

• In 1778, General George Washington marked the Fourth with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. Across the sea, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France.
• The first public Fourth of July event at the White House occurred in 1801. • The first Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi occurred at Independence Creek, Kansas, and was celebrated by the explorers Lewis and Clark in 1804. • Several important U.S. projects were started on Independence Day. Work on the Erie Canal in New York State began on July 4, 1817. Construction of the first railroad in the United States, the Baltimore and Ohio, was started on July 4, 1828. July 4 was the date selected in 1848 for laying the cornerstone of the Washington Monument. • Two American icons who were instrumental in ensuring the country’s independence passed away on July 4. Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day in 1826.
• The July 4 Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest was first held in 1916, the year Nathan’s opened its flagship restaurant on Surf Avenue in Coney Island, New York. • Now, every July 4, a group of 20 steely-stomached individuals line up behind a 30-foot table at Nathan’s on Coney Island for the world hot dog eating championship. INDEPENDENCE DAY (continued): • Several places in the United States have
“independence” in their name. The most populous of these is Independence, Missouri, with 113,288 residents. Other places adopted the name “freedom.” Freedom, California, with 6,000 residents, has the largest population among these. There is one place named “patriot,” Patriot, Indiana, with a population of 202.
USAir recently introduced a special half fare for wives who accompanied their husbands on business trips. Expecting valuable testimonials, the PR department sent out letters to all the wives of businessmen who had used the special rates, asking how they enjoyed their trip. Letters are still pouring in asking, "What trip?"
• What could be more fitting than spending July 4 in a place called “America”? There are several such places in the country, with the most populous being American Fork, Utah, with 21,941 residents. • On July 1, 1867, under the terms of the British North America Act, Canada East (Quebec), Canada West (Ontario), Nova Scotia and New Brunswick united to become the Dominion of Canada.

• Canada Day became a statute in 1879 but was initially called Dominion Day. There are not any records of early celebrations of Canada (Dominion) Day, except for two years. In 1917, it was used to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Confederation. It was also a backdrop for the dedication of the Parliament Building’s Centre Block, which was being constructed. • The government extended celebrations beyond the Ottawa region in 1980 by sponsoring the development of festivities on a local level. In 1981, 15 major cities offered fireworks to commemorate the day. • It wasn’t until 1982 that Dominion Day was officially changed to Canada Day.

February 19– March 20 Listen to your inner voice, and it will lead you to a new endeavor. A mix-up in communication causes quite the commotion at work. Laugh it off, Pisces.
March 21– April 19 Many changes are in store, and for the best results, you should let everyone in on the matter, Aries. The more prepared they are, the better they will receive what’s coming.
April 20– May 20 What a pity, Taurus. Your loss is someone else’s gain. Chalk it up to inexperience and learn from your mistake. A special occasion requires thinking outside of the box.
May 21– June 21 Looking to shine? This is your week. Gemini. You can do no wrong. A new face comes into the fold. Enjoy the start of what will be a beautiful friendship.

September 23– October 22 Get ready to party, Libra. Your social life is about to take off. A computer issue makes the completion of a report difficult. Grin and bear it.
October 23– November 21 Some things are better left unsaid. Divulge only what is necessary, Scorpio, and leave your audience to read between the lines. An e-mail raises an important question.
November 22– December 21 You’ve been burning the candles at both ends, and it is starting to show. Give up one or the other, or pare down your schedule considerably, Sagittarius.

TOM JONES
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
● On July 15, 1606, the great Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn is born in Leiden. Rembrandt completed more than 600 paintings, many of them portraits or self-portraits. By the age of 22, he was accomplished enough to take on his own students. ● On July 12, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signs into law a measure calling for the awarding of a U.S. Army Medal of Honor. The first U.S. Army soldiers to receive the honor were six members of a Union raiding party who in penetrated deep into Tennessee and Georgia to destroy bridges and railroad tracks. ● On July 14, 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett kills Henry McCarty, known as Billy the Kid. Garrett had been tracking the Kid for three months after the gunslinger had escaped from prison only days before his scheduled execution. At the trial, the judge had sentenced Billy the Kid to hang until “you are dead, dead, dead.” Billy reportedly responded, “And you can go to hell, hell, hell.”
● On July 18, 1940, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who first took office in 1933 as America’s 32nd president, is nominated for an unprecedented third term. Roosevelt would eventually be elected to a record four terms, the only U.S. president to serve more than two terms. ● On July 16, 1967, actor and comedian Will Ferrell is born in Irvine, Calif. After rising to fame on TV’s “Saturday Night Live,” Ferrell starred in a string of big-screen comedies, including “Anchorman,” “Old School” and “Talladega Nights.” ● On July 13, 1990, the romantic-thriller “Ghost,” starring Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg, opens in theaters across the United States. The film, about a woman who communicates with her murdered husband through a psychic, received multiple Academy Award nominations. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
Sir Tom Jones has sold over 100 million records. I wonder how many times his songs have been downloaded illegally?

● On July 17, 1938, glory-seeking flier Douglas Corrigan takes off from New York headed for California. Twenty-eight hours later, Corrigan landed his plane in Dublin, Ireland and exclaimed, “Just got in from New York. Where am I?” By the time “Wrong Way” Corrigan and his crated plane returned to New York by ship, he was a national celebrity.
Intersta te
When you are young, you want to be the master of your fate and the captain of your soul. When you are older, you will settle for being the master of your weight and the captain of your bowling team.
• Life wasn’t easy for young Tom Jones. His father worked the coalmines of the Rhondda Valley, while his mother tended the house and the two children. • Jones began singing at an early age. He sang in the church and with the choir at school. He would ask his mother to “pull the drapes and announce me,” as he sang on his “stage” in the sitting room. He wasn’t a very good student. After graduation, at age 17, he married and had a son. • Tom Jones began singing professionally in 1963, performing as Tommy Scott with the Senators, a Welsh group. In 1964, he recorded a handful of solo tracks with record producer Joe Meek and shopped them to various record companies with little success. • But persistence pays off. Record companies at first found Tom’s sound raucous and too powerful, the performance style too forward and sexual. Then in late 1964, he landed a recording contract with Decca Records. • Tom Jones’ first single was not a great success, but the next choice, a new song called “It’s Not Unusual,” was a huge international hit. Considered “too hot” by the established BBC Radio at the time, it was played by the pirate offshore station “Radio Caroline.” By the next year, Jones found himself opening for the Rolling Stones and playing alongside the Spencer Davis Group. • Jones` popularity began to slip somewhat by the middle of 1966. So he decided to change his image to a more respectable, mature tuxedoed crooner. Jones also began to sing material that appealed to a broad audience, like the country songs “Green, Green Grass of Home” and “Detroit City.” The strategy worked, as he returned to the top of the charts in the U.K. and began hitting the Top 40 again in the United States. • Jones was offered his own television show in the summer of 1969. A contract was drawn with ABC TV that was the largest ever between network and artist. The show’s location was split between London and Los Angeles, and it included an impressive guest list of virtually every major star of the day. • In the late 60s, Jones began to play in Las Vegas. Soon after, he began recording less, choosing to concentrate on his lucrative club performances. After his longtime manager died in the late 1970s, Jones’ son, Mark Woodward, became his manager. • In 1974, Jones moved to the United States, buying the mansion formerly belonging to Dean Martin in Bel-Air, Los Angeles. There he lived with his wife of 50 years, Melinda. • On March 29, 2006, 65-year-old Tom Jones was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. In a statement to the press, he said, “When you first come into show business and you get a hit record, it is the start of something. As time goes on, it just gets better. This is the best thing that I have had. It is a wonderful feeling, a heady feeling.”

FIREWORKS
Compared to the big bangs of today, the first fireworks had humble beginnings. They were actually nothing more than green bamboo thrown into fires to scare spirits away in ancient China. • Believe it or not, in the 1400s, Florence, Italy, was the center of the fireworks industry. At the time, fireworks were just one effect in a celebration rather than its focus. At religious festivals, Italians made plaster figures that spewed fireworks from their eyes and mouths. • Fireworks were originally applied to warfare by attaching them to arrows. The first such use, in 1,200 A.D., involved placing powder into paper Call 362-8133 for tickets or info tubes attached to the arrows with a fuse or a trail w w w. p e n g u i n s c o m e d y c l u b . c o m of gunpowder wrapped in tissue paper. • The 1533 coronation parade for Anne Boleyn included a papier-mâché dragon that belched Looking for quality entertainment? fire. “The right entertainment for the right audience” • Fireworks became very popular in Great Britain USA Entertainment Agency books corporate, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Smith, of course, gained fame in the story of CORPORATE ENTERTAINMENT Pocahontas. • The first Independence Day fireworks celebration was in 1776 and was memorialized by then future President John Adams as follows: “The day (Independence Day) will be the most memorable in the history of America. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, bonfires and illuminations (fireworks) from one end of 319-846-9336 this continent to the other, from this day forward forevermore.” Sponges grow in the ocean. That just kills me. I wonder how • During World War II, the first bomb dropped on much deeper the ocean would be if that didn't happen. Tokyo, Japan, was made by a fireworks company in the United States. was opened with the idea that there are crafters looking for an outlet to display their talents and to sell their creations. After years of sewing themselves Elayne and Valerie found the opportunity to offer such a place; they have taken a house at 115 Main St in Shellsburg and transformed it into a collage of sewing and beautiful craft creations. Each room is decorated to display the talents of over 31 consigners. The rooms are constantly changing as crafters bring in new creations. The “baby” room has over 30 quilts in it alone, and the kitchen is so full the appliances were removed and the cupboard fronts were taken off just to give everything display space. Every person that comes into the store is exposed to a wide variety of items; quilts, needlework, greeting cards, jewelry, floral arrangements, and so much more. If you see something that you like but perhaps would like it in a different color or size, all of the crafters can be reached and would be happy to customize your order-at no extra cost! MyTyme Creations now has a room that contains “Crafter’s Surplus”. This room gives crafters a chance to sell their overflow of supplies. Many of us buy with intent, but reality is that it ends up taking up space. Customers as well as other crafters can benefit from our “intents”. MyTyme Creations has been open for two years now, and is becoming a popular place for group outings. The store is open Wednesday thru Friday 12:00 to 6:00pm and on Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. They would be glad to open the store for any group by appointment. Several Red Hat groups have already enjoyed that opportunity! Shellsburg is just a short drive from Cedar Rapids, Marion, or Hiawatha. Be sure to stop into this gift shop to make your outing complete. MyTyme Creations and its crafters will be thankful for your visit and you will wonder why you didn’t come sooner. Remember, the store is ever changing as crafters create, so don’t miss out.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver
● It was U.S. President Dwight David Eisenhower who made the following comment: “I can think of nothing more boring for the American people than to have to sit in their living rooms for a whole half hour looking at my face on their television screens.” ● What we call coffee beans are actually the pits of the coffee beans. ● The dew that accumulates on May Day was once thought to have near-miraculous qualities. The mother of a sick child might rub a blanket across the wet grass on May Day morning to coat it with dew, then wrap the child in the blanket. May Day dew gathered from a fennel plant was thought to cure maladies of the eye, and itchy skin was sometimes treated by rubbing it with the dew. Dew from under an oak tree supposedly made a woman beautiful for a year, and dew gathered before sunrise on May Day morning reputedly brought good luck. ● Despite numerous arrests and trials, famed 19th-century outlaw Frank James was never convicted of anything and never went to prison. He died in 1915, at the age of 72, of natural causes. ● If you’re like the average American, you laugh 15 times every day. ● In Germany, Rice Krispies don’t say “Snap, Crackle, Pop”; they say “Knisper, Knasper, Knusper.” ● You may be surprised to learn that fastfood giant McDonald’s has trademarked the following phrases: “Made for You,” “Immunize for Healthy Lives,” “Changing the Face of the World,” “Gospelfest,” “Lifting Kids to a Better Tomorrow” and, perhaps most bizarrely, “Hey, It Could Happen!” ● At one time in England, there was a unit of length called a nail. It measured 2.5 inches long. *** Thought for the Day: “Hope is the feeling you have that the feeling you have isn’t permanent.” -- Jean Kerr (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Senior News Line by Matilda Charles
Paying for Pet Food Too many seniors are considering giving away their pets or taking them to the shelter. Often the senior is on a limited budget, and it’s getting too difficult to pay for pet food. If you’re in this group, help is available. While there doesn’t seem to be a national network of pet assistance for seniors, small efforts have sprung up across the country. In some places, animal shelters have been taking donations of food and money to help people keep their pets. Call and ask for help. (Many have funds available for veterinary care, too.) Call the Humane Society’s national number (202-452-1100) or go online to www.humanesociety.org. (You can use the computers at the library if you don’t have Internet.) Do a Google search for: pets food assistance. Put in your state to find help in your area. Try this search: pet food pantry. Or this: pets food “need help.” Google also has an online article called “Having trouble affording your pet?” It includes a list of help organizations for every state. Call your veterinarian’s office and ask if they know of a local help organization. Many big chain pet stores are donating food to organizations on the local level. Call the pet stores in your area and ask if they know of local help organizations or if they donate to any. Call your local food bank. Many are starting to take donations of pet food. Researchers say that having a pet to care for can do wonders for our health. We get more exercise as we throw toys for a cat and get to socialize with others when we take the dog on a walk. Having a pet is good for us. There’s also the little matter of love we share with out pets. Before you give up your pet because of the cost of its food, ask for help.

Robby Gordon Builds Momentum SONOMA, Calif. -- Jimmie Johnson got a long-awaited road-course victory, but winning couldn’t have meant as much to Johnson as second place did to Robby Gordon. As owner of his team, Gordon has struggled. His No. 7 Monster Energy Toyota failed to make the field at Pocono. Prior to the runnerup finish, Gordon’s best showing of the season had been a 14th at Phoenix. He has only three finishes in the top 20. “My team needs a little bit of morale here and there,” said Gordon. “This will boost morale back at the workshop. I will say that we will come to Watkins Glen guns blazing. We’ll get a lot of confidence going into the Glen and spend a bunch of time getting more rear grip. At the end of the day, that’s what we struggled on with Jimmie (Johnson).” What a runner-up finish at Infineon Raceway did for Gordon is solidify his position in the Sprint Cup point standings, meaning that he will have a guaranteed spot in the next race and, quite probably, several more after that. “On a weekly basis, let’s face it right now, we’re (32nd) in points,” he observed. “It’s hard to build morale. ... I think this will build us some momentum. I’m not going to say it’s going to push our guys, because the guys have to get on board. “I believe they’ll have confidence going to Watkins Glen (the other road course, on Aug. 8) that we can actually win that race, so we can build some momentum throughout the summer, and hopefully have some good runs. Gordon, from Orange, Calif., has been a winner in NASCAR, off-road racing and Indy cars. At age 41, he continues to compete in major off-road races. He has three Sprint Cup victories to his credit, the most recent occurring on Aug. 10, 2003, at Watkins Glen. “This is a tough sport,” he said. “I don’t know how to say it. Cup racing, when you’re racing against these teams out here, you’re racing against the best teams in America. “Obviously, Cup racing is where it’s at. We’re fortunate enough to be in it. How do you say it? Sometimes we dog-paddle; sometimes we take a few gulps of water. Other times, you have days like this that you can build momentum on for a little while.”

Two men got out of their cars after they collided at an intersection. One took a flask from his pocket and said to the other, "Here, maybe you'd like a nip to calm your nerves." "Thanks," he said, and took a long pull from the container. "Here, you have one, too," he added, handing back the whiskey. "Well, I'd rather not," said the first. "At least not until after the police have been here."
