Toddlers can splash safely in a calm and shallow cove; teenagers can take surfing or body-boarding lessons near a reef; and while dad is out hitting drives on one of two championship golf courses, mom and the kids can snorkel in the crystalclear Pacific, swim with green sea turtles, and snap photos of dolphins and endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals. • Large numbers of seashells are yours for the picking on Sanibel Island, known as one of the country’s top destinations for this family-friendly activity. This spot on Florida’s Gulf of Mexico has all the ingredients for a kid’s dream vacation – soft white sand, gentle surf and shallow water – plus the educational possibilities that parents love. • There is no doubt that Australia has some of the best beaches and best waves, which of course are the perfect ingredients for a surfer. Gold Coast City is in the southeast corner of Queensland and is well known for its sunny subtropical climate and surfing beaches. It has been called a surfer’s paradise. • In the Eastern Cape province of South Africa is one of the most famous surfing destinations in the world. It is especially great during the winter months, when surfers come in droves for a great ride on beaches like Super Tubes, Boneyards, Kitchen Windows, Magna Tubes, Point and Albatross. • The City of Myrtle Beach is in the center of what is called the Grand Strand, a 60-mile (97 km) strip of beach on the South Carolina coast. In the last 25 years, Myrtle Beach has developed into one of the premier resort destinations on the east coast.

Do not be confused about "Buy Local". Buy Local means to purchase material or services from those businesses owned by people who live in the Cedar Rapids area. These owners are your family, friends and neighbours that could use your help. Some of them have been through the 2008 flood and others are battling the economy. Let us support these businesses by shopping at their establishments and in turn revitalize the great city of Cedar Rapids. We encourage customers to UTILIZE this free website for supporting local business owners and for the betterment of the Cedar Rapids community.

WHY BUY LOCAL?

Studies have shown that $45 of every $100 spent at locally owned stores stays in the community, whereas only about $13 of every $100 spent in chain (big box) stores remains in the local economy.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

● On Aug. 24, 1814, during the War of 1812 between the United States and England, British troops enter Washington, D.C., and burn the White House in retaliation for an American attack two years earlier on the city of York in Ontario, Canada. ● On Aug. 27, 1883, the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history occurs on Krakatau, an uninhabited volcanic island located west of Sumatra in Indonesia. Heard 3,000 miles away, the explosions threw 5 cubic miles of earth 50 miles into the air, created 120-foot tsunamis and killed 36,000 people. ● On Aug. 23, 1902, pioneering cookbook author Fannie Farmer, who changed the way Americans prepare food by advocating the use of standardized measurements in recipes, opens Miss Farmer’s School of Cookery in Boston. Farmer later educated medical professionals about the importance of proper nutrition for the sick. ● On Aug. 25, 1939, “The Wizard of Oz,” which will become one of the best-loved movies in history, opens in theaters. Though the scenes in Kansas were shot in traditional black and white, Oz appears in vivid Technicolor, a relatively new film process at the time. ● On Aug. 29, 1945, President Harry Truman authorizes the Navy to seize control of and operate petroleum refineries to counteract strikes by oil workers. Oil, gas and chemical workers had worked hard during the war to meet production demands and now wanted to return to a 40-hour workweek. They resented the amount of money oil-industry CEOs were making off of their labor while they simultaneously threatened to lower workers’ wages after the war. ● On Aug. 26, 1959, the British Motor Corporation launches its newest car, the small, affordable -- at a price tag of less than $800 -- Mark I Mini. Although only 10 feet long, the Mini could sit four adults and had a trunk big enough for luggage. ● On Aug. 28, 1988, an air show involving military jets at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany turns tragic when three jets collide in mid-air and fall into the crowd of 100,000 spectators. Sixty-nine people died and hundreds more were injured. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Pre-Diagnosing Alzheimer’s Disease

Would you want to know years in advance that you have Alzheimer’s disease in your future? It’s a huge question, and getting an answer could soon become a real possibility. Scientists are now developing ways to pre-diagnose Alzheimer’s, as much as 10 years in advance, and they’re setting out guidelines on just how it can be done. Following these guidelines, they say, doctors will be able not only to diagnose, but also estimate what stage the patient currently is in. Scientists predict that the minute these guidelines go into effect, the number of diagnoses of Alzheimer’s could increase two to three times. One of the tests in the guidelines is a PET scan of the brain, where amyloid plaques, if they are there, will show up. The other is a test of spinal-fluid proteins. These two tests, along with the standard cognitive tests, are a big step from the current method of diagnosing Alzheimer’s: autopsy after death. The drug manufacturers, of course, are all for it. The instant there’s a preAlzheimer’s diagnosis, they stand to make money -- there are a number of drugs in production they’d like to try. The Food and Drug Administration is being cautious about those drugs, however. It wants proof that the drugs work, which will be difficult to determine quickly, as Alzheimer’s moves slowly over years. There’s still hope, of course, of stopping any pre-Alzheimer’s in its tracks. Research extracted from the long-term Framingham Heart Study (since 1948) indicates that exercise can go a long way to cutting the risk of Alzheimer’s. Another recent study revealed that a diet with adequate vitamin D can cut the risk of Alzheimer’s. (Researchers aren’t sure, however, if vitamin D supplements will work.) For Alzheimer’s information, go online to the Alzheimer’s Association at www. alz.org or call its help line at 1-800-2723900. • Most often thought of as a solo artist, Bowie has been in 10 bands: The Konrads, The Hooker Brothers, The King Bees, The Manish Boys, The Lower Third, The Buzz, The Riot Squad, The Hype, Tin Machine and Tao Jones Index. (Some of these have performed under other names). • Bowie has collaborated often in his career. Bing Crosby recorded his last single with David Bowie. Their duet version of “The Little Drummer Boy” was recorded for Christmas 1977. It was a hit five years later. • Toni Basil of “Oh, Mickey” fame worked as Bowie’s choreographer on his Diamond Dogs tour in 1974. She later worked on his Glass Spider tour of 1987. • He’s also branched into acting. Bowie appeared as Pontius Pilate in Martin Scorsese’s movie “The Last Temptation of Christ.” • Bowie now owns a company called UltraStar, which designs websites and is also an ISP. The company has done the websites for two American baseball teams, The New York Yankees and The Baltimore Orioles. • Bowie draws, paints, sculpts and writes in his spare time. His favorite artists are Tintoretto, John Bellany, Erich Heckel, Picasso and Michael Ray Charles. • His “legend” status has earned him mentions in other bands’ songs, like Kraftwerk’s “Trans Europe Express” (“Meet Iggy Pop and David Bowie, Trans Europe Express”), and “Backside” by the Strawbs.

Glam rock icon David Bowie was born David Robert Jones in Brixton, London, on January 8, 1947. He shares the same birthday as Elvis Presley. He changed his last name from Jones to Bowie because he didn’t want to be confused with Davey Jones of the Monkees. No one would confuse the two today! • Rock guitarist Peter Frampton was Bowie’s friend at school; Frampton’s dad was head of the art department. He’s gone on to play guitar with Bowie many times in his career. • David Bowie was a man ahead of his time. He was always extremely theatrical, and he studied mime to portray his music in a different way from many of the 1960s bands. He believed the future of music would be a combination of acting and video. This would appeal to a greater audience. • At the age of 17, Bowie was interviewed on a BBC program as the founder of The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-haired Men. He complained: “It’s not nice when people call you darling and that.” • Around the time of Bowie’s 1975 “Young Americans” album, Chic founder Nile Rodgers auditioned to play guitar in Bowie’s band. He didn’t get the part. • The original cover of “The Man Who Sold the World,” showing Bowie in a dress, was banned in the United States. The cover that replaced it was of a man with a shotgun in front of a building. The building is a drawing of the Cane Hill Mental Hospital where Bowie’s brother Terry was a patient. • The fictional character of Major Tom has appeared in three Bowie hit albums: “Space Oddity” (1969), “Ashes to Ashes” (1980) and “Hallo Spaceboy” (1996). • His hit “Ziggy Stardust” is about Vince Taylor, who wrote “Brand New Cadillac,” later covered by The Clash.

Greg Biffle’s year to date has been disappointing because he hasn’t yet won a race, but in the Ford camp, there’s plenty of disappointment to go around. Twenty races into a 36-race season, no Ford driver has won. Biffle’s third-place finish at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the Brickyard 400 left him and others with a bit of optimism for the future. It was his best finish of the season, surpassing a fourth at Bristol in the season’s fifth race. Ford’s new engine, the FR9, is now fully implemented, and that, in Biffle’s eyes, is another encouraging sign. “I’m really proud of the guys and this engine program,” he said. “This engine ran really good today, but I want to win one of these things. We had the fastest car, but the fastest car doesn’t always win. We’ve just got to take some chances to win some of these races, I guess.” Noting that stock-car racing has rewarded aggressiveness more than in past years, Biffle cited the impact of the current chassis design. “These cars inherently take a little more abuse than the old car did,” he said. “This thing is built, I don’t want to say like a battleship, but it’s built a little tougher than the old car. The old car, if you got in the fence a little bit and scraped it up, you had problems. ... This car can take a little bit more and keep going.” Biffle, 40, is a native of Vancouver, Wash. He debuted at NASCAR’s highest level in 2002 with a 13th-place finish at what is now Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. The first of 14 victories occurred on July 5, 2003, at Daytona. Only Biffle and Johnny Benson have won championships in what are now known as the Camping World Truck and Nationwide series. Biffle was the Truck titlist in 2000 and the Nationwide champ in 2002. Biffle also is a former Raybestos Rookie of the Year in both support series. In 2003, he finished second in the (now) Sprint Cup rookie standings to the driver who won the Brickyard 400, Jamie McMurray. In 2005, Biffle finished second to Tony Stewart in the Cup standings, and in 2008, he finished third. At present, Biffle stands 11th in the Cup point standings. Entering the final six regular-season races, he is 78 points ahead of 13th place. Only the top 12 make the series’ championship-determining Chase for the Sprint Cup.

With new engines, Ford drivers such as Greg Biffle have been unable to get through to victory lane this season. But Biffle remains optimistic despite the drought. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo)

● It was American drama critic and author John Mason Brown who made the following sage observation: “Reasoning with a child is fine if you can reach the child’s reason without destroying your own.” ● The first Wal-Mart was located in the town of Rogers, Ark. When it opened in 1962, it had a total of 16,000 square feet of space. Today, there are Wal-Mart Supercenters all over the United States, and they measure at least 100,000 square feet and can range up to 220,000 square feet. ● The original Maytag company was known for making horse-drawn buggies rather than appliances. ● The word “pretzel” comes from the Latin word for “little reward.” ● Researchers at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania conducted a joint study on Americans’ weight. They concluded that if current trends continue, 86 percent of adults in this country will be obese by 2030. ● Before H. Ross Perot became a successful businessman -- and had a brief, somewhat less successful career as a politician -- he broke horses for a living. ● Fireflies start to glow in order to attract a mate, and they die soon after finding one. ● Experienced boot makers reportedly can get three pairs of the footwear out of a single ostrich hide. ● When you sneeze, the air leaves your mouth at approximately 100 mph. You've been bitten by the decorating bug, and you're ready to redecorate the major living areas in your home. You don't have a lot of money to spare, so you're going to have to cut costs where you can. Not to worry. With some thought and careful shopping, you can create beautiful rooms on a small budget.

Janet Spratte

341 8th Ave. Marion, IA 52302 (319) 373-1323 Business (319) 573-7498 Cell j.spratte@att.net

When shopping, you want to put the bulk of your budget toward any large furniture pieces you need. Don't cut corners when it comes to these. Sure, you may save some money now, but you will have to shell out more later when the furniture breaks and you have to replace it. When possible, buy multifunctional furniture. Instead of a sectional, buy a sofa bed that you can use for extra guests. Should you need some smaller furniture pieces, consider buying them used and redoing them. Once you have the furniture all set, study your living areas carefully and look for inexpensive fixes. Instead of replacing your carpet, consider redoing the hardwood floors underneath. If you need to hire a professional for the job but can't afford it, consider painting the floors until you can save enough money to have them refinished. Instead of papering your walls, paint them to look like linen using a faux finish. Instead of replacing your cabinets, have them refaced or paint them yourself. Add some new hardware, and they will be good as new. One of the easiest fixes involves the use of paint and trim. Both are relatively inexpensive, and you can use them to transform almost anything from drab white walls to plain side tables. Add drama to your living room walls by wrapping a chair rail around the middle and painting the upper half beige and the bottom half chocolate brown. Dress up your plain side tables with some molding and light blue paint, and set them against the freshly painted brown walls for a pop of color. Along with paint and trim, fabric is another inexpensive fix. Don't have any art? Stretch a piece of interesting fabric across a canvas, staple it into place and hang it up for instant artwork. Need new pillows? Make some out of some fabric and batting, or sew slipcovers for the ones you already have. Drapes ragged at the bottom? Cut off the damaged ends and sew on new bands of fabric. When shopping for fabric for your rooms, start at the remnant table. Chances are you will find exactly what you need for all of your sewing projects at a fraction of the cost. Combine various patterns, styles and textures for a unique look. When it comes to accessories, think outside of the box and look for bargains. Don't be afraid to use the unexpected. Go ahead and bring in that old garden gate and hang it on the wall. Take advantage of sales, clearance aisles and bargain bins. Shop at flea markets and thrift stores, and remember, you can redo almost anything you find. See a chandelier you like that's tarnished? Go over it with some tarnish remover or give it a quick dash of spray paint. Add some new shades, and voila, you've got a new light at a low cost. Decorating on a shoestring budget is not hard. It just takes some clever thinking and some fine-tuned shopping. Good luck and have fun.

CATFISH

LOCATION,

These tasty fish get their name thanks to their catlike whiskers, called barbels. They’ve always been a culinary delight (most often fried) in America’s deep South, but today the catfish is finding its way onto menus and plates across the country and the world.

• Catfish have become such a symbol of American summertime fun and fishermen’s tall tales that President Reagan declared June 25th as National Catfish Day in 1987. There is not a lake or fishing hole in the United States that does not boast some sort of legend about, “the oldest, biggest catfish that has ever lived swimming in these waters.” • During the 19th century, giant blue catfish weighing from 125 to 200 pounds (57 to 91 kg) were reportedly caught on a regular basis. In his book “Steamboating: 65 Years on Missouri’s Rivers,” Capt. William Heckman described a 315-pound (143 kg) blue cat caught just after the Civil War. • On May 1, 2005, the largest freshwater fish ever recorded was captured in the Chiang Khong district of Northern Thailand in the Mekong River. The Mekong giant catfish weighed in at 646 pounds (293 kg) and measured to be almost nine feet (2.7 meters) long. • There are many catfish species. Clarias batrachus, otherwise known as the walking catfish, is capable of breathing air, allowing it to move over land to find a new body of water. Their gills are stiffened to prevent their collapse when out of water, and in part of the gill chamber are spongy arborecent organs. These and the skin are well supplied with blood vessels, which keeps the fish comfortable for a good length of time out of the water. • Channel catfish prefer cool, deep, clean water, with slow to moderate currents and a sandy or rocky bottom. They live in a wide variety of waters—rivers and streams, swamps and backwaters, lakes and reservoirs. They are found throughout much of the eastern two-thirds of the United States.

A broker was dismayed when a brand new real estate office much like his own opened up next door and erected a huge sign which read 'BEST AGENTS.' He was horrified when another competitor opened up on his right, and announced its arrival with an even larger sign, reading 'LOWEST COMMISSIONS.' The broker panicked, until he got an idea.
