PIRATES (continued): • Pirates pierced their ears, not to look suave, but because it was believed that piercing the ears with such precious metals as silver and gold improved one’s eyesight. Even relatively respectable seafaring men indulged in the practice. • “Davy Jones’ Locker” is a real nautical term that dates back to the 1700s and refers to the bottom of the ocean and a graveyard for drowned sailors. • As early as 1611, there are written accounts describing a person who brings bad luck to a ship as a “Jonah.” If a man was marked as a Jonah, he was doomed to be thrown overboard. If the trouble persisted, the pirates might suspect they’d thrown the wrong man overboard and would sometimes toss the original accuser into the sea to appease the ghost of the innocent man. • Every pirate ship had its Code of Conduct specified by the pirate captain. While stealing was the pirate’s job, stealing amongst shipmates was severely punished. Some boats had a “zero tolerance” policy for internal theft that left you dead or marooned if caught. • No one has actually ever found a real pirate’s buried treasure map. Never too far from death, most pirates tried to enjoy their money quickly. At any rate, there aren’t any maps around today, unless some are still cleverly hidden. • Throughout history some women have preferred knives to knitting needles. Two of history’s most famous female pirates are Anne Bonny, born in Ireland, and Mary Read, born in England. Not wanting to live the subservient life expected of women during her day, Bonny won over the respect of her pirate crew members with her murderous and capable ways. She eventually became best friends with her fellow fierce, female pirate, Read. • As members of Captain “Calico” Jack Rackham’s crew, Bonny and Read disguised themselves as men and earned reputations as tough, fearless fighters. When Rackham and his crew were captured and sentenced to hang, Bonny, the captain’s girlfriend, reportedly told him: “Had you fought like a man, you need not have been hanged like a dog.”

Writing a Solid Resume If you’ve revamped your resume for job hunting, chances are you’ve tinkered with it so much that you can no longer see it clearly. Here are some thoughts and ideas to consider before you send it out. In many cases, you’ll have only about eight seconds to grab someone’s attention. There are two formats to consider in writing a resume: chronological versus functional. In one, you describe your past jobs starting with the most recent and then work backward. In the other, you organize your skills. Which one you use is up to you and can depend on the type of position you’re seeking. In some cases a combination will work best. Depending on the jobs you’re applying for, you might need multiple resumes. In some, you might want to leave off that you have a Ph.D. and speak multiple languages. In others those qualifications could be important. Many resume services advise starting with a statement of your objective: What kind of job are you looking for? If there are certain keywords for your industry, use those. It might be a machine that scans your resume. If you’re just beginning to do your resume and you’re at a loss about where to start, look at samples online. Even if you’re able to hire someone to do the work, having an idea in advance about the finished product might well reduce your cost of having the resume prepared. If you’ve been out of work and don’t know how to account for that period of time, don’t fudge the truth. Ideally you’ll have some volunteer experiences to list. If you’re currently working and feel that your job is secure, great! But take the time to write down the things you’ve accomplished in your current job, as well as the ones you’ve had before. If the worst should happen and you’re handed a pink slip, having that information already written down will be a big help when you’ll likely be worrying about multiple issues. For in-depth information on writing your resume, go to www.resume-help.org. Also see www.jobsearch.about.com. Above all, edit, check and reread, even if a professional does the work for you. Don’t let a resume go out with a single misspelled word or wrong date. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

PIRATES (continued): • The exact origin of Jolly Roger, the generic term for a pirate flag, is unknown. It may come from “Old Roger,” an English term for the devil, or from a corrupted version of the French “Jolie Rouge,” meaning “pretty red.” Pirate ships didn’t fly Jolly Rogers at all times; instead, they’d often fly fake flags until their victims or enemies came into view. • Pirate ships flew Jolly Roger flags featuring motifs intended to intimidate, including skulls, crossbones, swords, skeletons, bleeding hearts and hourglasses, meant to symbolize that time was running out. • Port Royal, Jamaica, once known as the “wickedest city on earth” and as a wealthy haven for pirates, was devastated by an earthquake on June 7, 1692. Much of the thriving, densely populated community was destroyed. Port Royal was rebuilt and served as a British naval station in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, it is a small fishing town and tourist destination. • “Treasure Island” by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson was first published serially in a children’s magazine between 1881 and 1882, under the title “The Sea-Cook.” It was published as a book in 1883. One of the main characters, the pirate Long John Silver, is nicknamed the Sea Cook. Silver, who is missing one leg, was reportedly inspired by a writer-editor friend of Stevenson’s who had lost a leg to disease. • The “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride opened at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, in 1967. It was reportedly the last attraction that Walt Disney (1901-1966) had a hand in planning before he died. • In pirate language, “shiver me timbers” was used to express strong feelings or surprise.

Did you hear about the TV weatherman who, despite his training and sparkling credentials, ran into a terrible unlucky streak? He became something of a local joke. The town’s newspaper began keeping a record of his predictions. A year later, the paper reported that he’d been wrong almost three hundred times in a single year. Unable to handle the pressure, the station manager fired him. So the meteorologist moved far away and applied for another job as a TV weathermen. When he got to the question on the application about why he had left his last job, he wrote, “The climate didn’t agree with me.”.

Flu Shot Update In previous years certain groups were advised to get a flu shot: those who are age 50 and above, have a chronic condition, are a caretaker for someone who’s ill and so on. Now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advising that everyone age 6 months and older get a shot. Not only that, but the vaccine against the big-name flu from last year, H1N1 (also called “swine flu”), is now included in the regular flu shots. Does your doctor think you should have a flu shot this year? Now is the time to ask. Chances are the doctor’s office will even have you come in for your shot. Be sure to ask about the increased strength “Fluzone High-Dose” vaccine for seniors above age 65 year and whether you should have that one instead of a regular shot. There are also a number of other places to get a flu shot. ● CVS Pharmacy is offering flu shots through its Minute Clinics, or you can make an appointment for the pharmacist to give you a shot. www.cvs.com/flu ● Walgreens is offering flu shots through its Take Care Clinics. Put in your ZIP code to find a location near you. www.walgreens.com ● Take a look online at Find a Flu Shot www.findaflushot.com for clinics usually found in grocery stores. ● Also check Walmart and your local senior center and walk-in clinics. Be sure to call in advance, because not all locations will have vaccine at all times. Whether or not you get a flu shot, this is the time to stock up on hand sanitizer and sanitizer wipes. Take a small package of sanitizer wipes with you to the grocery store to wipe down the handle of your cart. Here’s to a healthy winter!

The Smith’s were proud of their family tradition. Their ancestors had come to America on the Mayflower. They had included Senators and Wall Street wizards. They decided to compile a family history, a legacy for their children and grandchildren. They hired a fine author. Only one problem arose - how to handle that great-uncle George, who was executed in the electric chair. The author assured the family he could handle the story as tactfully as possible and was given the go-ahead to write the book. The book appeared. It said “Great-uncle George occupied a chair of applied electronics at an important government institution and was attached to his position by the strongest of ties. His death came as a great shock.”.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver ● It was American author and philosopher Eric Hoffer who made the following sage observation: “Rudeness is the weak man’s imitation of strength.” ● If you were to have a perfectly dry mouth, you wouldn’t be able to taste a single thing. Researchers conducted an experiment in which they placed salt on a subject’s dry tongue, and the subject reported absolutely no taste at all. Once a drop of saliva was added, though, the taste came through clearly. ● According to the makers of the Stetson, a 10-gallon hat actually holds only about three quarts of liquid. ● During the third century, Saint Lawrence of Rome, a deacon to Pope Sixtus II, was burned to death during a series of persecutions of priests and deacons. Legend has it that while he was on the fire, he turned to his executioners and said, “This side’s done; turn me over and have a bite.” It was for this reason that he was named the patron saint of butchers, roasters and comedians. ● The average robin reportedly has nearly 3,000 feathers. Makes you wonder who did the counting. ● Most people probably are aware of the fact that Franklin Delano Roosevelt is the only American president who was elected to more than two terms in office -- he served three full terms and died during his fourth term in office. Despite the fact that he was an incredibly popular president, however, in none of his four elections did he carry his home county of Dutchess, New York. ● If you have a severe food allergy, peanuts are the most common culprit, followed, in order, by shellfish, fish, tree nuts and eggs.

American singer and songwriter Johnny Cash was born in rural, south-central Arkansas on February 26, 1932. Thanks to his signature deep bass voice and his songs full of dark themes, Cash is often called one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. • The family moved to Dyess, Arkansas, when he was three. His father Ray Cash, was a farmer, hobo and odd job laborer. • Johnny Cash’s real name was John R. Cash but they called him J.R. while he was growing up. Tommy was his younger brother. Roy was his older brother’s name. • Cash’s birthplace is almost directly across the Mississippi River from Lake County where Carl Perkins was born six weeks later. • Cash’s father Ray was the lead for the country band Dixie Rhythm Ramblers. • Cash’s mother had him take vocal lessons at the age of 13. But after only three lessons, the teacher told him to never take another lesson and never change his natural singing voice. What a wise teacher! • Before turning to music as a full-time profession, Cash sold home appliances door to door. • When he was older, Cash left home to work in Pontiac, Michigan. The job lasted only two weeks before he returned home to Arkansas. On July 7, 1950, he enlisted in the Air Force. While he was stationed in Germany, Cash bought his first guitar. • The scar on the right side of Cash’s jaw was the result of a botched attempt to remove a cyst while he was in Germany, not from a fight. • Trying to break into the music business, Cash auditioned for a job as a radio announcer at a station in Corinth, Mississippi, but was turned down because lack of experience. Using his G.I. benefits, Cash then enrolled at the Keegan School of Broadcasting in Memphis. • During his early shows with his band The Tennessee Two, Cash would frequently make jokes when introducing his band mates. He would introduce guitarist Luther Perkins, who was secretly terrified of performing in public, and add either that he was in “rigor mortis” or that his pulse had been checked beforehand to make sure he was still alive. Then he would introduce bassist Marshall Grant, who would usually hop around and dance with great energy as he chewed gum, as “playing the chewing gum.” • Signed to Sun Records as Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two, the group’s first released single, “Cry, Cry, Cry,” became a moderate country hit. After the two-sided smash “So Doggone Lonesome” backed with “Folsom Prison Blues,” the group had their first major pop/country hit with Cash’s own “I Walk the Line” in 1956. • If you saw the movie based on Cash’s life, you know it’s true: Cash proposed to his wife June Carter over 30 times before she accepted. • Cash recorded entire “live” albums at both Folsom and San Quentin Prisons in front of a receptive audience full of very rowdy and loud inmates. • Cash was the youngest person ever chosen for the Country Music Hall of Fame and the first person ever selected for both the Country and Rock Music Hall of Fame. The Great Hank Williams shares this unique honor, as does Elvis Presley. In 1998, Presley was finally inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was already in the Rock Music Hall of Fame.

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

Johnny B Friday Jan. 23rd 8 pm A man and his music!

Smoke Rising HAMPTON, Ga. -- Is Tony Stewart making the kind of late emergence that could win him a third Sprint Cup championship? Stewart, 39, won the Emory Healthcare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. His average finish in the past 11 races is 9.18. He finally broke into the winner’s column. After winning for the first time this year, Stewart actually said he felt better about this season -- fourth in points, one win, two poles -- than last season, where at this point he had 3,694 points (109 more than Kevin Harvick’s total now) and three wins. Stewart led the points by 237 then. He trails Harvick by 283 now. Yet Stewart said after winning the Emory Healthcare 500 that a year ago, he was leading the points and headed downhill, while, this year, he’s trailing but reeling in other contenders by leaps and bounds. “I don’t know if we have peaked,” said Stewart. “How do you know when you’ve peaked? I guess if you’re winning every week, you feel like you’re peaking to a certain degree. ... It’s been a lot of little steps in the last 10 to 12 races. “At this stage (in 2009), we were pointing downhill, and this year, I feel like we are pointing uphill.” Statistics do show that the first two finishers in Sunday night’s race are the most consistent in the Sprint Cup Series ... recently. Carl Edwards’ average finish over the past eight races is 5.0, but Edwards hasn’t yet won. Now Stewart has won. And he is hot. “Nobody’s really noticed it, but we have noticed it internally,” he said. “It’s a much better feeling right now this time of year than it was a year ago.” Really? “We were on such a high, leading the points, and had won races already,” Stewart insisted. Both Stewart and his team are flushed with success at the moment, and with the Chase for the Sprint Cup about to commence, it’s not a bad place to be.

Painting Changing Lights Interior Restoration Wall or Ceiling Repair

Lighten Up By Tresa Erickson

Take a look around your home. How would you rate your lighting overall? Excellent? Good? Fair? Poor? If you see a lot of dark corners and dimly lit rooms, you might benefit from a lighting overhaul. When it comes to lighting, few people put enough thought in it. They change out the bulbs in their overhead lights, throw in a few lamps here and there, and are done with it. Unfortunately, a few overhead lights and lamps do not always cover homeowners' needs. Lighting in general falls into three basic categories: ambient, task and accent. Ambient light illuminates the entire room. In many rooms, it comes from the overhead fixture. Task lighting illuminates areas where certain tasks are done, like cooking or reading. It may consist of a variety of fixtures from underthe-counter fluorescent lights in the kitchen to bedside reading lamps in the bedroom. Accent lighting illuminates décor. It runs the gamut from track lighting for art to spotlights behind plants. Well-lit rooms contain a variety of ambient, task and accent lighting. There are no dark corners, but plenty of light sources for whatever tasks take place. Some rooms, of course, require more light than others. A study would have far more task lighting than a home theater. The lighting must fit the function of the room. There are a variety of fixtures available from recessed lights to wall sconces to pendant lights. Whatever you choose, make sure it meets the requirements and function of the room. Don't put a big bright overhead light in a home theater. Chances are you won't need it, whereas you would need it in a kitchen. As you are revamping the lighting in your home, don't forget about the light bulb. There are a variety of light bulbs available that serve a variety of needs. Fluorescent bulbs, for example, emit colder light than incandescent bulbs and might not work so well for a cozy reading nook. For additional help with the lighting in your home, don't hesitate to seek the help of a professional at a design center. They can provide you with a number of valuable tips and options.

Safety First

By Tresa Erickson School is back in session, and your kids will no doubt be spending some time on the playground. While you won't have to worry about the condition of the equipment-school officials should have already inspected it and made any necessary repairs, you might want to address how your kids use it. Misuse of playground equipment can happen even with adult supervision and lead to injury. It is important you teach your kids about playground safety to reduce their risk of injury. Here is a quick quiz to see how much your kids know and what issues you should address with them. 1) It is okay to swing sitting down or standing up. True or False? Answer: False. You should always sit down when swinging. Standing up is never a good idea because you could easily fall. 2) If you and your friend want to swing, but the swings are full, you should share a swing. True or False? Answer: False. You should never share a swing with someone unless it is made for more than one person. 3) The best way to exit a swing is to jump out of it. True or False? Answer: False. You should never jump out of a swing. Instead, you should slow down almost to a complete stop and get off carefully, making sure you don't bump into anyone who may be waiting for the swing. 4) You should never climb on wet equipment. True or False? Answer: True. You could easily slip off equipment that is wet. 5) If a friend dares you to race them up the ropes, you should go for it and climb as fast as you can. True or False? Answer: False. You should never race on any piece of playground equipment. You could easily lose your grip and fall. 6) The best way to climb equipment is with both hands. True or False? Answer: True. 7) It is okay to climb up the slide. True or False? Answer: False. You should never climb up the slide. Someone could be sliding down and hit you. 8) If you and a friend want to go down the slide, you should do so one at a time. True or False? Answer: True. Sliding down in groups raises the risk of injury. 9) The best way to go down the slide is headfirst. True or False? Answer: False. You should never slide down headfirst. The risk is too great for head injury. You should always slide down feet first. 10) It is okay to play on broken equipment. True or False? Answer: False. Playing on broken equipment is dangerous. If something breaks on the playground, you should tell your teacher. There are many other questions you could ask your kids regarding playground safety. The more you teach them about playground safety and remind them to be cautious, the more likely they will do so and the less chance they will have of injuring themselves.

The owner was angry and called the florist to complain. After he had told the florist of the obvious mistake and how angry he was, the florist said. "Sir, I'm really sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry you should imagine this: somewhere there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying, "Congratulations on your new home".
