While the modern game was developed in Canada, ice hockey made it to the USA and was first played here in 1893. By the beginning of the 20th century, the sport had spread to England and other parts of Europe and now is very popular in North America and Eastern Europe. • The National Hockey League is considered the most important Ice Hockey league in the world and is made up of teams from the United States and Canada. For many years almost all NHL players were Canadians. • In 1917, the NHL began with the following “Original Six” teams: Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadians and Toronto Maple Leafs. Through a sequence of team expansions, reductions and relocations, the league currently consists of 30 teams, 24 based in the United States and six in Canada. • The team that wins the NHL championship wins the Stanley Cup trophy. • The first Olympic Games to include ice hockey for men took place in Antwerp, Belgium in 1920; it was the Summer Games. However, the first Olympic Winter Games took place in 1924 in Chamonix, France, and also included hockey. Women’s hockey was added to the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, in 1998. • Pucks weren’t always the same. Now, a puck must meet guidelines set forth by the NHL for weight and dimensions. In 1940, Hockey Hall of Famer Art Ross came up with the idea of having all pucks meet certain standards. Pucks have remained the same since then, with each being 3 inches (8 centimeters) in diameter and an inch (3 centimeters) high. The puck must weigh no less than 5.5 ounces (156 grams) and no more than 6 ounces (170 grams). Grooved, diamondshaped edges, a feature that gives a puck some traction with the hockey stick, are necessary. • The NHL puck, with the exception of the colored logos on it, is always black. Hockey pucks are frozen before being used in play, because the rubber with which they are made is too bouncy otherwise. • NHL overtime was eliminated during WWII, because there were restrictions on train travel. Officials couldn’t risk a game going too long and players missing the one and only train that night. It was reinstated in 1983-84.

A man named Joe had tickets to game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals, right at center ice. As Joe sat down, a man came and asked him if anyone was going to occupy the seat next to him. "No," said Fred, "sit right down. The seat will be empty." "That's incredible!" said the man. "Who in their right mind would reserve a seat like this for the Stanley Cup and then not use it?" Joe said, "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Stanley Cup we haven't been to together since we got married nearly 50 years ago." "Oh... I'm sorry to hear that. That's terrible. But couldn't you find someone else - a friend or relative, or even a neighbor - to take her seat?" Joe shook his head sadly. "No. They're all at the funeral."

Road Accidents: We’re Not at Fault Don’t you love it when seniors myths are proven wrong? Turns out we’re not the reason for so many road accidents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just finished a study to determine the financial costs of accidents: loss of productivity, medical costs and so on. As a by-product of the study, it determined which age group has the most accidents. Answer: It’s not us. Totals for loss of productivity and medical costs for accidents for one year of the study: $99 billion, which includes auto accidents, pedestrians and motorcycle and bicycle riders. Here are a few highlights: ● Teenagers are 14 percent of the population, but they account for 28 percent of the accidents and 31 percent of the cost ($31 billion). ● Motorcycle riders had 12 percent of the cost ($12 billion), pedestrians 10 percent of the cost ($10 billion) and bike riders 5 percent ($5 billion). So, just how many accidents are we seniors responsible for? A mere 3 percent. And we account for 13 percent of the population. Still, to keep up our good record, it might be smart to take a driving course designed especially for seniors. These courses offer information on how to keep an eye out for other traffic, dealing with distractions and how to adjust to the physical changes caused by aging. There’s an inexpensive online course by the AARP www.aarp.org or call 1-888227-7669 to find a class near you. Check SeniorDrivers.org for online driving courses and short tests that assess your driving skills. There are online videos and information about driver rehabilitation specialists. An important point often forgotten is to get your eyes checked and update any prescriptions. To be considered: A study in 2006 determined that those of us who keep driving stay out of assisted living centers and nursing homes. The Police burned up the airways in the eighties and are now considered rock n’ roll royalty, having sold more than 50 million records worldwide to date. • The Police were founded by American-born drummer Stewart Copeland in early 1977. After the demise of his progressive rock band Curved Air, Copeland was anxious to form a new threepiece group and join the London punk scene. • Singer-bassist Sting and guitarist Henry Padovani began rehearsing with Copeland in January 1977 as the Police, and they recorded their first single, “Fall Out”/”Nothing Achieving,” the following month. • In July 1977, Copeland, Sting, Padovani and Andy Summers began performing as a four-piece version of the Police. Padovani’s relatively limited ability as a guitarist curtailed his time with the band. Soon after an aborted recording session with producer John Cale in August of 1977, Padovani left the band, and Summers took over guitar duties. The lineup of Copeland, Sting and Summers would endure for the rest of Police history. • The music for “Walking on the Moon” came into Sting’s head when he was alone in a hotel room. He originally wanted to call it “Walking Round the Room.” After he thought of the riff, he began to walk around the room to the beat. • For the Police, recording their first album, “Outlandos d’Amour” was a hardship. They worked with a small budget and had neither a manager nor a record deal.
A TV can insult your intelligence, but nothing rubs it in like a computer.
• Copeland’s older brother Miles Copeland III heard “Roxanne” for the first time and immediately got them a record deal with A&M Records. Originally released in 1978, the single was re-released in 1979, and it was then that the Police gained widespread recognition in the United Kingdom, as well as scoring a minor hit with the song in several other countries, notably Australia. • The group’s success led to a gig at the famous New York club CBGB and a grueling United States tour for which the band drove themselves and all their equipment around the country in a Ford van.

• In October 1979, the group released their second album “Reggatta de Blanc,” which was a major seller throughout Europe. The album topped the British charts for four weeks and spawned the UK number-one singles “Message in a Bottle” and “Walking on the Moon.” The instrumental title track won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. • By this time, Sting was becoming a major star, and he established a career beyond the Police by branching out into acting. He made a well-received debut as the Ace Face in “Quadrophenia,” the film version of The Who’s rock opera. He also played the character Feyd Rautha in the movie “Dune.” As Sting’s fame rose, his relationship with band founder Stewart Copeland began to deteriorate. • After the “Synchronicity” tour ended in March 1984, the group disbanded, and each band member went on to pursue his own solo career. In June 1986, the trio reconvened to play three concerts for the Amnesty International tour. In July of that same year, a tense, short-lived reunion in the studio produced only subdued re-recordings of “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” and “De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da.” • The Police were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2003.

For Carry Out Orders Call (319) 364-1959 A housewife, an accountant and a lawyer were asked "How much is 2+2?" The housewife replies: "Four!". The accountant says: "I think it's either 3 or 4. Let me run those figures through my spreadsheet one more time." The lawyer pulls the drapes, dims the lights and asks in a hushed voice, "How much do you want it to be?"
RICHMOND, Va. -- Contrary to popular belief, the Chase for the Sprint Cup did, in fact, change during the Air Guard 400. Not the composition. The order. Denny Hamlin, by winning at Richmond International Raceway, nailed down the top seed. By virtue of 60 bonus points, 10 for each of his victories to date, Hamlin will begin the Chase with 5,060 points, 10 more than the winner of the past four championships, Jimmie Johnson. Ten points are insignificant over the span of the 10-race Chase. For that matter, Hamlin’s 60-point edge over the five winless Chase drivers is relatively small. But, noted Hamlin, it’s something. He said winning six races, more than anyone else this season, was proof his team’s quality and evidence that it would contend for the championship. But, he added, “Your momentum ends as soon as you go to the next race track, as far as I’m concerned.” Hamlin, 29, has made the Chase in each of his five full seasons. His latest victory was the 14th of his career. His previous Chase finishes, beginning in 2006, were third, 12th, eighth and fifth. “I’ve made a lot of these Chases and made a lot of mistakes through these Chases,” he said. “Every year I feel like we learn something. I feel like this year I’m as clear as I’ve ever been and we’re winning at race tracks where we don’t usually win.” Kevin Harvick won the regular-season point race by a wide (228-point) margin, but that means little once the Chase begins on Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Harvick has won three races to date, meaning that he opens the Chase trailing Hamlin by 30. The Chase qualifiers, with points as reconfigured, are Hamlin (5,060), Johnson (5,050), Harvick (5,030), Kyle Busch (5,030), Kurt Busch (5,020), Tony Stewart (5,010), Greg Biffle (5,010), Jeff Gordon (5,000), Carl Edwards (5,000), Jeff Burton (5,000), Matt Kenseth (5,000) and Clint Bowyer (5,000). Four drivers who won races -- Jamie McMurray (2), Ryan Newman, Juan Pablo Montoya and David Reutimann -- failed to qualify for the Chase.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver
• It was 20th-century French air force brigadier general and geopolitician -- and bearer of the nickname “father of the French atom bomb” -- Pierre Marie Gallois who made the following sage observation: “If you put tomfoolery into a computer, nothing comes out of it but tomfoolery. But this tomfoolery, having passed through a very expensive machine, is somehow ennobled and no one dares criticize it.” • Gravity makes you shorter. It’s true; gravity compresses your spine -- in a weightless environment, you would be 2 to 3 inches taller than you are here on Earth. • You might be surprised to learn that the first ceiling fan was introduced way back in the 1860s. The lack of electricity was no deterrent; the device was powered by a stream of running water. • When the bubonic plague, more commonly known as the Black Death, was at its peak in Europe in the 14th century, a wide variety of remedies was prescribed, including smoking tobacco, bringing spiders into the household, inhaling the stench from a latrine, sitting between two large fires, drinking red wine in which new steel had been cooled, and bathing in goat urine. • Those who study such things say that women are better at identifying smells than men are. • In 1994, Singapore banned the importation and sale of chewing gum. ALLlooking HANDfor MADE!!! are crafters an outlet to OPEN:their Noon-6 Wednesday thru Friday display talents and to sell their and 10-4 Saturday creations. After years of sewing themCall 319-540-6243 for more info. selvesorElayne and Valerie found the check mytymecreations.com opportunity to offer such a place; they have taken a house at 115 Main St in Shellsburg and transformed it into a collage of sewing and beautiful craft creations. Each room is decorated to display the talents of over 31 consigners. The rooms are constantly changing as crafters bring in new creations. The “baby” room has over 30 quilts in it alone, and the kitchen is so full the appliances were removed and the cupboard fronts were taken off just to give everything display space. Every person that comes into the store is exposed to a wide variety of items; quilts, needlework, greeting cards, jewelry, floral arrangements, and so much more. If you see something that you like but perhaps would like it in a different color or size, all of the crafters can be reached and would be happy to customize your order-at no extra cost! MyTyme Creations now has a room that contains “Crafter’s Surplus”. This room gives crafters a chance to sell their overflow of supplies. Many of us buy with intent, but reality is that it ends up taking up space. Customers as well as other crafters can benefit from our “intents”. MyTyme Creations has been open for two years now, and is becoming a popular place for group outings. The store is open Wednesday thru Friday 12:00 to 6:00pm and on Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. They would be glad to open the store for any group by appointment. Several Red Hat groups have already enjoyed that opportunity! Shellsburg is just a short drive from Cedar Rapids, Marion, or Hiawatha. Be sure to stop into this gift shop to make your outing complete. MyTyme Creations and its crafters will be thankful for your visit and you will wonder why you didn’t come sooner. Remember, the store is ever changing as crafters create, so don’t miss out.

Wood decks are exposed to the elements year-round with very little protection, and eventually those elements start taking their toll. That’s why the fall is the best time to prepare your deck for the ravages of winter and to slow down those signs of aging. Here’s what happens during the life of a deck: A wooden deck properly built can last for 10–15 years. But a decade of enduring rain, snow, scorching heat, sun and wind tortures even the hardest of woods. When exposed to moisture, wood swells, and when it dries, it shrinks. This repetitive cycle year after year causes deck boards to bow or bounce, railings to wobble, screws to loosen or the whole deck to sway. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be replaced. In most cases, if the footings are in good condition and there is no wood rot, the deck can be repaired. Some of the most common deck ailments and remedies are as follows: • The natural process of swelling and shrinking will eventually cause screws and nails to lose their grip. The most vulnerable areas are the handrails and railings, followed closely by deck boards. For loose deck plank problems, you don’t have to remove the old hardware. Just add new nails and screws, doubling the support. Apply as much pressure to the area as you can to get a tight connection with the supporting wood, then use a nail punch to drive the new nails alongside the old ones. While you’re there, punch the old nail, too, driving it deeper into the supporting wood. For screws, experts say galvanized, coarse-threaded deck screws work best. • As with wood exposed on the upper side of the deck, the joists which support the deck planking swell and shrink, too. As they shrink, they lose contact with the rim joists, affecting the seal. When this happens, you might notice the deck becoming wiggly or bouncy as it loses stability. To reinforce bouncy joists, install blocking. Blocking is the use of boards, the same size as the joist, in a perpendicular manner to the joists. This blocking shifts weight distribution from being completely on one joist to partially on adjoining joists. Another advantage to blocking is that when joists become stressed, they can tilt ever so slightly but enough to weaken the structure. Blocking helps to keep the joists vertical, which is when they are at their strongest. Joist hangers can add additional support if your desk was built without them. And if your deck has joist hangers that are no longer effective, try wedging a slender piece of wood shim between the joist and hanger for a tighter fit. This will usually do the trick.

Welcome to the San Francisco International Airport. Sorry about the bumpy landing. It’s not the captain’s fault. It’s not the copilot’s fault. It’s the Asphalt. Please remain seated until the plane is parked at the gate. At no time in history has a passenger • For decks that sway, install cross braces between support beaten a plane to the gate. So please don’t even posts. This not only provides additional post support but try. also reinforces the horizontal beam by giving support midway. Use 4x4’s or better yet 6x6’s with 45-degree angle cuts Please be careful opening the overhead bins because "shift happens." to brace the posts. Attach the cross braces with at least a 6" lag bolt. The longer, the better.
• As with other areas of the deck, the stairs can bow or become bouncy. This again is due to wood’s natural reaction to the elements but can be especially hazardous where stairs are concerned. To repair unstable stairs, reinforce the end stringers with a second solid layer, using a 2x10 or 2x12 between the original stringer and railing. Additionally, applying a 2x4 to each side of the middle stringer support will give further stability.

Of course, it goes without saying that a good finish will go a long way to prolonging the life of a deck. Finishes should be water repellent or waterproof, provide UV (ultraviolet) protection and contain a mildewcide. Most wood preservatives contain a mildewcide, but read the label before purchasing any finish to make sure you’re getting what you need. Most decks will need to have the finish reapplied every two to three years. A beautiful deck can add to the value of a home. With regular maintenance and repair, it will last for years to come.
